Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere. My search-fu is weak. Even relatively common words like "black" and "marines" were coming up with no results.

But anyway, I'm curious as to what the rules are for 500pts battles. I'm not sure what has to and can't be in it. 0-2 HQs? 0-1? 1+ troops? I don't know.

There's different types of 500pts aren't there? I guess there's just normal rules, so you need 1 HQ and 2 troops, despite the fact that's most of your 500pts army. There's also the slightly expanded 40k in 40mins rules, where they keep the same rules like no 2+ saves etc.

Then Combat patrol. What is that? Is that 500pts? Or another name for the 400pts 40k in 40mins lunchhammer type thing?

If any of the above, what are the rules that are going to be used at GW tournaments like Conflict? I've heard they're turning into doubles, and me and my friend are interested. As far as I know it's 2 x 500pts armies against another 2. Which rules?

(Main question being. Do I need an HQ in 500pts?)

Thanks a lot.

typically 500pts is 1HQ and 2 basic troop types, untooled or at least the HQ is tooled. some armies need a little more but standard rules apply, 2 troop and 1 HQ, always, of course you could attach the HQ to a squad

It is another name for 3rd editions 40k in 40 min.

In a normal game you use the standard force organisation chart, so yes, you do need an HQ.
This is of course different if you play with modified 40k in 40min rules.

Yeap your better off playing Combat Patrol (the new edition of 40k and 40 minutes), these games have restriction in place so players dont field a uber tough character and two minimum troop choices like they can in a game 500pts or more.

Its a good general rule of thumb for making a fair list between 500+ to 999 points is to keep your HQ choices at 1 and avoid taking a HQ over 150pts (as this will put a cap on the uberness of the HQ). Of course their is nothing stopping you from fielding a uber HQ in a small game, but its often frowned open by other players.

Not to mention that your victory suddenly only depends on the survival of your HQ... and that's usually not a good thing.

What's really cool is when someone fields three devastator squads and minimum strength troop squad in a "scouting mission/patrol". It's really fun when you place a couple more house restrictions to actually mimic to patrols running into each other. More Troops, less heavies and elites.

I would be quite impressed if you manage to have 3 devastator squads with the maximal amount of heavy weapons and a tactical squad in 400 pts.
