Quick question....

Are giant eagles on a 40mm square or 50mm square base?

Someone gave me an eagle with no base

Old models are on 40mm, new are on 50mm. I put mine on 50mm, and I think it looks a lot better.

According to the new base size chart, giant eagles are 40x40. At least, french giant eagles are, anyway.

I've always seen and played vs. Giant Eagles on 40mmX40mm bases, including recently. They're flyers and not Large Targets, so irrespective of the rules, I'd say they're on standard flyer bases (like Terradons and Fellbats etc.)

They're not on flyer bases anymore, none are. They should never have been anyway, since there's quite simply no rule covering these stupid bases.

I meant 'flyer base' as in 40mm. That's what virtually all over Flyers are on isn't it? With the exception of Harpies and Furies, but they're considerably smaller obviously.

Well it's a monster so either would be fine by the rules (whatever its sold with). I've only seen it sold and played on 40mm bases

You're in quite the predicament,

GWs stance is: Whatever it is sold with.

<.< you better track down who bought it from who, and which base it was sold with.

alternatively: have your friend give you a dollar. You give your friend the great eagle and either 40mm or 50mm. Buy the Great Eagle off your friend for the dollar and use the base it is sold with. ;)

(or cheat, and pick one)

I'd go with 40mm. Thats what most fliers w/ 2 wounds are on: Pegasus, Fell Bats, Carrion, Warhawks, Etc.

I'd say 40mm too.

Oups, sorry, I thought you meant the silly round flying bases, you know, the transparent 40K ones, my bad xD

Anyway, the new base chart says 40mm. So 40mm it is.

Giant Eagle's are 3 wound monsters, not a unit of fliers, just to be clear.

Is there a new chart that I don't know about? If you're referring to the one I think you are, it's 6th edition and long out of date ;)

Anyway, the answer is, it's a monster so "Any base/ no base" size is appropriate. So 40mm or 50mm is fine- just don't take the **** and it should all be good.

There is a new one indeed:

Too bad for most people here, it's in french, but it dates from last month.

in reality the current ones are sold with 50mm bases. however this is dumb because the one i bought about 4 years ago came on a 40mm base, and the giant eagle isnt a large target so the 50mm base makes no sense.

The French one that was new in march put them on 40s. they have since updated it for april and they now use 50s

I'll be damned, you're right, it's been updated again:

And indeed the great eagle has been changed to 50mm
edit: that being said, that new one got a note that it's been written for GT and should not be imposed on every warhammer players.
Bleeding idiots, can't even take a stand. You know what, you do what you want, in fact. Geez, spineless retards. is it so hard to decide on a base size for a unit and stick to it? Seems so.

Many apologies for the necro, but I'm struggling with this exact problem at the moment wrt Great Eagles and the new edition.

When I've seen them in the past they've been on 50mm bases, but with the new edition it would make more sense for them to be on 40mm. Anyone now for certain what its supposed to be?

I'm kinda torn, 40mm is better, but I'm using leftover Griffons from IoB as proxy eagles and they will fall all over the place on 40mm >.<

My French is lacking but I believe I'm reading that Daemon Princes go on a 40mm?

They need to update it again, because the new kit comes with a 50mm!!!

I'm pretty sure the old metal ones they still sell on the GW website come on 40mm bases.

It is NOT amonster, it's a monstrous beast.

I'd say 50mm actually, since if someone is mounted on a mounstrous beast they are monstrous cavalry, and monstrous cav are on 50x50 bases, right?

Or 40mm, as that makes more sense. My argument still stands though! ;)

I don't really see the issue here, it comes with a 50mm base and the rules tell you to use the base that it came with. So if you have an unbased eagle you put it on a 50mm base, because that is what they come with if you buy them from GW.

I bought 2 of the 25th anniversary army boxes several years ago, this had the sculpt you now see as great eagles for high elves(awesome sculpt to I love it) anyhoo as I was saying I bought these over 2 years ago at ard boys finals and even then they were on 50mm, so I'd say 50mm

Thanks for the feedback, I'm using unmounted griffons as my eagles so I'll keep them on the 50mm bases :) glad this is the case as I'd really struggle to get them on 40mm!!
