The Wood Elves have a Rare choice called a Great Eagle. On the Games-Workshop website they have both "Great Eagle" and "War Eagle" listed as Rare choices. I can't find "War Eagle" anywhere in the Army Book. Does this mean that "War Eagle" is the model I use for a "Great Eagle" that is not carrying someone? I ask because the mounted characters on GEs use the GE model.

Basically I am asking what a War Eagle is.

Its the same thing, I think they might be called war eagles when used as a mount and great eagles when used as a monster

The war eagle is the old great eagle model.
Both are the same thing.
You could even use a warhawk as a great eagle if you wanted.

Oh ok, I think I'd go with either a Warhawk or a Great Eagle, both look good. But is it possible to remove the rider from the Warhawk? I have never bought any, so I don't know if it has some notches for the rider's feet, or if the rider is attatched... Maybe I could find a picture of the sprue somewhere, I'll check it out.

The hawk is not attached to the rider. Though you will have to fill a small hole used to help hold the rider in place. It isnt that noticeable if you didnt want to fill it. I have been very lazy and only painted/attached half of my warhawk riders.

Reminds me to actually get a Great Eagle or 2 for my High Elf force.

The "war Eagle" is indeed the older range of models, but even back then they were called "great Eagles", I suspect it's just a mix up with whoever typed it in for the store, perhaps because of the hawks being named similarly. I like the older figures more, particularly the one just gliding along, which I have two of somewhere. Seems they are cheaper too :)

By the way, I have never had anyone complain about me using the old warhawk model as a great eagle (I couldn't afford a unit of three warhawks anyway!)

GW has a war eagle with a rider and a special edition without the rider (Warhawks are too small). GW also sells a different war eagle for LOTR. And the Gamezone eagles are fine as well (with or without rider).

Yeah, except they are mounted on different bases, so no.

The war eagle is the old great eagle that is not mounted. The great eagle is mounted by an elf. Hope that helps. You can order the old one still, I believe.

Have checked the pics: The old eagle is very small, too small IMHO.
The new one (for Wood Elves) is offered in the "mounted" version with mask (but can also be used without the rider) or the mail order only non-masked version.

Here is the link to the LOTR mail order only model:

Mounting something on a different base usually isn't the biggest issue. You just need some spare bases.

Anyway, you could even use a stuffer sparrow as a great eagle, as long as it is recognizable as what it is supposed to be. Your imagination is the limit.
