With TacComms on the fritz lately and Malakai bugging me to post, I've decided to expand my logs to Warseer as well. That being the case, there is quite a bit to catch up on these days.

In the beginning was the Guard.
To begin with, I've always been curious about Epic given the tiny scale so one day I broke down and snagged some old OOP guardsmen from ebay to have a look at how much detail they actually had and being unable to bring myself to paint up masses of infantry for 40k. Eventually they got painted and thus was born my epic rabbit chase from 40k.

That gave me this:
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/igcommand2.jpg

To which many moons later was added a second, and then came support:
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/firesupport.jpg
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/Firesupport02.jpg

And seeing that Epic was good, and that it was fitting vehicles should follow, the Guard gained more support:
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/hellhouds2.jpg

Not satisfied with all that was done, the guard was found wanting once more and soon the forges replied with steel:
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/bassie01.jpg
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/bassie02.jpg

And thus the cries fell silent for a time.

And while it as that the Guard lay resting, The angels cried out and thus was born the imperial fists. But all was not well for in fire was lost much knowledge.

Hearing the cries of their brothers, soon appeared both land raiders and terminators:
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/land%20raiders.jpg
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/terminators01.jpg
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/terminators02.jpg
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/terminators03.jpg

And thus their forces were deemed whole:

For a while the cries of Guard and Marine were drowned by thunder of the machine god and at his call arose great engines of war:
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/knights.jpg

and their cries rose for their greater brothers to awake and add their thunder to the chorus:
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/oopwarhounds.jpg
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/warhound05.jpg
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/warhound06.jpg

But even these were not enough and there arose greater cries for their ancient kin and they were heard:
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/reaver01.jpg
http://www.digitalequinox.com/wip/epic/reaver02.jpg

And with these their cries fell silent too and all was finished for a time.

14-04-2009, 18:11
Then it was that the Guard became restless and the call of machines was heard again. Tales were formed to present this new forces adorned in great tanks and titans and in the following months they were finished too. Sentinels, Thunderbolts, Warhounds, shadowswords, and Baneblades alike were forged until all was done.

And that gets everything up to date. Otherthings I've done in there are a few objectives and I'm working on some more Imperial Fists as well as trying to complete the AMTL force. 2 warlords and 6 knights to go.

You should give it a try Ravenheart! Epic Armageddon is a miles better game than W40k or any of the other core games. You can still get some awesomely painted armies and you paint them lots quicker.

Great models Vaaish, particularly like the FW superheavies :) How do you do your rust / weathering? Are the numbers from transfers and if so which ones?

Ravenheart: yes, definately try epic. The last two pics of the IG stuff together is 2000 points and cost about $120 USD which is plenty reasonable in the average 40k budget. Even painting, if I compressed it, was about 5 weeks total although the event was stretched over 4 months spending about $30USD a month.

Glyn: I've used two general methods of doing the rust, both use dark flesh as the basic rust color and firey orange as the more oxidized rust color. The first method is paint on drips and rust around bolts and hatches with dark flesh and then hit some areas with firey orange, the second is to make a heavy wash of dark flesh and let it flow into the corners and do the same with firey orange before picking out areas if bits of orange. The decals are mainly from the cadian IG for 40k.

Magos: I'm currently working up 6 knight titans and then another two warlords to round out the models I have to AMTL. Guard still needs another 3 baneblades, 18 chimeras, and 6 hydras. Then I have some comissioned Imperial Fists and after that point I have some things I'd like to add to my own IF army and I've got plans toying around with Eldar.

Well I should probably add in a few up close shots of the later stuff for TOTW09 so here are a few more:

Shadowswords:

Baneblades:

Thanks! I am changing up the scheme for the knights somewhat. I'm trying a deep brown to reddish brown for this batch and less rusting. Kind of like they have more funds available to upkeep their titans keeping them to mostly the same standard as the titan legions.

Not sure you need to do that mate, after reading Mechanicum, there would appear to be fluff wise a big line in the sand dividing Titan Legions and Knight Households. I think what you have going is awesome and sets a great standard for others.

Vaaish
19-04-2009, 20:37
SSG: Thanks, they aren't cartouches but they do contain hieroglyphs. I was in a bit of a rush when I did them so they don't say anything in particular. The closest is the on the the right that says Netjer but the rest are just whatever random glyph came to mind as I was going. I was aiming to make these fit better with the theme for my 40k marine chapter than the first 6 came out.

Thanks, though it seems that outside of commission work, I'm running out of epic models to paint. Just 2 warlords to finish up arms, objetives of various sorts, and a hellbore before I'm into terrain, my last BFG vengeance, and 40k vehicles.

This was a busy week, I finished up another tactical detachment for a commission and the second objective for my own Imperial Fists.

Enjoy.

Tonight I finished up building and painting my final objective for the Imperial Fists, the blitz. Since this sits on your own table edge, I felt a nice command bunker was in order and this is what came out. Next up a BFG grand cruiser.

29-05-2009, 14:15
Fantastic! The missile tubes are right above the front door, though... seems like an odd choice if you over-analyze it, but my first thought when I saw the pictures was that the whole thing is just *too* cool.

I recognize a few BFG bits... are the sides made from Leman Russ sponsons?

Vaaish
29-05-2009, 14:49
Thanks! I realize that it's the missile plate from the objective and it does look kind of weird if you think of them as missiles (they have to be really short or kind of awkward to get through the door) but the more I played with putting it elsewhere, the more I came to the conclusion the plate made an excellent ventilation fan system and just fit perfectly up front.

The sides are scratch built with the turrets coming from the old BFG space marine dropship.

Godly!

Your painting and modelling are matched only by your photography. The backdrop, colour balance, and the fact that they're in montage reminded me a little bit of Hortwerth's stuff, but I guess that's just coincidence.

Are there any more Guard infantry, or is that the lot? it's interesting that they're on square bases by the way; are those useful in the EpicA rules? i only ever dabbled in Epic40k so I wouldn't really know.

I've got my eye on everything epic Guard on ebay, really keen to have another go and you've just encouraged me further.

Vaaish
30-05-2009, 17:27
Thanks, but I don't think there will be any guard infantry coming any time soon. I have enough models left for about 2/3 of a company but they really need chimeras, hydras, and banebades before I get to that not to mention I'm running out of square bases. On bases, the EpicA rules only specify dimensions the bases need to be within so there is not problem using square vs rectangular or even round. I personally prefer the square bases because they are easier to balance on things than the rectangular ones and with a bit of GS you can make some nice adjustments to the model arrangement.

In the near future I'm finishing up my BFG backlog and more commission marines. I may even finish up a 40k rhino or two.

01-06-2009, 23:10

02-06-2009, 14:24
Thanks, Yeah, these BFG ships have tons of little greebles all over them that just overwhelms the eye most of the time and given the scale of the model vs the scale of the ships it's difficult to decide how much detail to put into it for stuff like widnows and other glowy bits.

Excellent painting log Vaaish, very inspiring. I rather like your Epic IF's they look very nice.

I like the conversion work on your two VGC's, nice fleet by the way as well. It looks very impressive.

Vaaish
03-06-2009, 13:49
Thanks, I do like the IF's myself. It's a very fun army to paint although it too a bit of fiddling to get a scheme that works well for the scouts I'm painting right now.

I'm glad you like the Vengeance, but there wasn't any conversion done to them really. The only real conversions are on the dauntless light cruisers, emperor, and retribution models.

SSG Snuffy
03-06-2009, 14:10
Quite the fleet! Very nice detailing, very consistent scheme for the fleet. I really like the Falchions! I think the Voss-pattern bows look better than the stock cruisers' bows, and I really like the freehand detailing that you did on the Akhet Djet.

I shouldn't be that impressed, considering the teeny-tiny heiroglyphs you did on your Knights... but it's still very cool.

Time for another update, this time with some old dropships for epic. These were quite fun to paint and I might end up trying to acquire another at some point to give it a much more thorough paint and modeling job. Next up is another tactical detachment though I'll probably also finish up the arms for my two warlords as well in preparation of a 5.5k game next weekend.

In other news, I'm seriously running out of models to paint up. For epic, outside of eldar which I'm not sure where I'm going to go, I have four e40k basilisks, and two old style land speeder detachments, plus a hellbore that's kind of my reward when I run out of everything else.

For 40k I have three rhino chassis, 10 sternguard to convert, two dreads to convert, and a smattering of objectives.

And BFG just has a blackstone fortress and 6 infidel raiders. Not a whole lot left.

I guess old epic dropships aren't too exciting :) Today's update seems a little quick since the last, but the warlord has been painted and waiting arms for a few weeks. I gave a friend the laser blaster arm and a couple of volcano cannons to construct arms for while I was off on my honeymoon but wasn't able to complete them and was heading out so I finished up with this one. Only one beetleback left to finish up for the game saturday... if I can find the volcano cannons for it.

Well my week of craziness continues as I prep for a 5.5k Epic game this weekend. First up, the marine speeders are finally done and awaiting a coat of varnish tomorrow night. I'm fairly pleased with how they turned out give the time frame, but I might revisit them a bit to pick out some more details and add some kind of writing to the sides of some of them in the future.

Also nearing completion is another IF tactical detachment for my commission. It just needs the base painted and flocked before it's done. Hopefully that will happen tomorrow night.

The last project is the volcano cannon arms for my last beetleback warlord titan. It's progressing well but we had a setback when the volcano cannons couldn't be found requiring us to build a set from scratch. If all goes well, construction will be finished tomorrow night and I'll get a basecoat on them so I can get them painted and attached saturday morning before the game in the evening. THe good news is they will look cooler than the originals and it rounds out my Titan Legions force.

Try: not a problem.

Project two for the week is now done and awaiting approval. Finished up the tactical detachment's basing tonight before moving on to complete the final project of the week with help from my friend.

So far we have the volcano cannons built and the arm attachments built so now we just need to attach the cannons to the arms and the make sure it attaches to the the titan correctly before bascoating the bits for painting tomorrow.

A small update now that my order of HF chimeras have arrived from forge world. I went ahead and did a test conversion to see how workable my idea was to convert them to multilasers. I'm fairly happy with the results, but I won't have an opportunity to paint them up until after I finish the terminators I'm working on right now.

Could you place a 40k mini next to one of the tanks or terminators ... just for reference?

I don't play Epic, so I don't really know how large those Rhinos are. Epic is in the 6mm range, right?

Well it's the end of another week and the Imperial Fist motor pool continues to grow. The rhinos are finally complete as are the first bit of AA support to keep them from being pounded by enemy aircraft. Despite having quite a few more vehicles to go, I think that it's time to take a break from them and hit up more of the specialty troops seeing I have 28 stands of infantry to go and this should drop them to at least 20 :)

After that I'll be moving back to IG to finish up my last three baneblades before the advent of yet another detachment of Whirlwinds and a pack of razorbacks.

Thanks, I have quite a few things to go before I do any epic scratch building I fear. At least five 40k vehicles, the last 12 for my epic guard, and a fair chunk of epic ruined buildings or other terrain before I clean out my personal painting log.

But I am intrigued, what is this monster tank? I can think of a couple possibilities but I'm not positive which you are referring to.

SSG Snuffy
13-08-2009, 16:56
Perhaps he meant the Leviathan in his signature block? That already exists as an Epic model, if I remember correctly.

Dannage
13-08-2009, 20:26
I did indeed. And yes, The Leviathan is based very (very) loosely on the original epic, but where some people have 'true-scaled' marines, I have effectively true-scaled the regimental command, so you must think of the Volpone Pattern Leviathan as being modelled on typical GW cover-art, and not gaming models.

Vaaish
15-08-2009, 05:11
Interesting, but I think there is someone already scratch building an epic one on the taccom forums. :)

Update time though, for all you that like little tiny symbols, how about little tiny banners? These are the completed IF Scouts and Terminators marking the end of these critters and leaving one full battle company of infantry to go. All plastic too which is a welcome relief from epic metal infantry that can be a pain to get mold lines off of.

Slight change in plans, I'll still do the baneblades next week because they need finishing and my IG is laughing at me being this close to done. However the Drop pods were calling me (Ok, it clears out 4 blisters which gives me space for the rest of the stuff) so they will be next up for the fists.

I also decided to go a bit nutty with the banner this time to see if I could pull it off at this scale. I'm pretty pleased with the result and I have a better idea how to go about this next time. Enjoy.

Thanks! It really is encouraging to read when you guys like how they turn out! I've been busily painting up the drop pods and they are finished, a day or two earlier than expected despite the rather large distraction a package arriving and its Marine landing craft beckoning me to paint. Tough call to paint that or finish out guard this coming week. Either one has some conversion work to be done. For the LC it's putting a cover over the hole on the bottom rear and bulking up the spine so it looks like it can carry as many marines as it's supposed to and for guard it's the last of the chimera conversions.

Well I digress from the subject at hand, so without further blathering, here are the drop pods. Enjoy!

That's very nice, fine work. I see a wide band running horizontally with thin strips coming off of it vertically. I look forward to seeing it in yellow!

That piece is made of strips of plastic, not a single piece. Tonight's update though is the last of the commissioned IF assault detachments. If all goes well I should see about getting the dev detachment underway this weekend before hitting a couple of the forgeworld thunderhawks. While I'm working on that I'm also slowly painting up the landing craft, but I'm working to push that to a higher paint level than I've tried in epic scale.

This log is great. I really like the yellow on your marines, and the detail is phenomenal.

I've just started painting Epic and I'm still getting a sense of how to paint the models. What I need to know though is what basing materials you use. Is it just super-fine sand and some flock?

Miniature Michael

I have to give you credit Vaaish those miniatures look amazing. I once tried to paint the Battle of Five Armies minis (10mm), and I almost went cross eyed!

Vaaish
03-09-2009, 16:45
Thanks guys! For some reason I just like painting epic. Perhaps it's because I have a somewhat short attention span and limited time in the evenings to paint that it just makes me feel like I'm making headway on an army rather than taking much longer to field a force like with 40k. Of course now that my copy of SH arrived I'm partly wanting to get those underway too but I keep telling myself to finish the epic guard and the 40k marine vehicles before thinking about that.

@qwerty: I use a variety of things for basing. The square bases earlier in the thread are sculpted greenstuff while the strip bases are just fine grain sand and rock I found in the yard. The grass is a combination of fine flock and clump foliage since it matches the scale better than static grass.

I've not been dead, just trying very hard to get a couple of forgeworld thawks painted up for Cal and not kill myself over my grad class the last couple of weeks. I've also start working with a couple of new techniques for weathering these since they are larger than most models and I don't think my previous weathering method scales well. I've also working out a few different color patterns with them since they are so detailed. I just changed a light in my studio so I think the color balance is a bit bright on the yellow with these.

I'm not positive I'm totally finished with this one, since I might tweak a bit of black and boltgun on the top and bottom. However, despite that I'm pretty happy with this over all. I think my hew technique for chipping paint works much better overall than the previous brush method although there is still a place for that. This model was just to push my overall painting skill so a lot of work was put into highlights and the like. The last two images can be expanded to show a bit more detail. Enjoy.

Very nice! As I mentioned before, your conversion is seamless... I can't tell the difference between the original parts and the pieces you fabricated (which is the way it's supposed to work!).

Would you mind sharing some of your weathering techniques?

Vaaish
05-10-2009, 18:38
Thanks! The unfortunate side effect of a seemless conversion though is that most people don't realize how much work has been put into the model. :( Looking at the pictures, I think the color balance is still off on the yellow. It's nowhere near that bright in life and it's blown out all of the highlights and shading too. I'll have to try some filters on the lights to diffuse them more.

Any particular aspect of weathering? Most obvious is the chipping of paint which I do by dipping some of the clump folliage I use on the base into boltgun paint and dab it on. This gives a more random and finer pattern than the older method I used of poking it with an old brush. Next time I plan on doing this after the model has been sealed since it dulled the gloss on the boltgun considerably and it's difficult to get all the tiny spots with gloss varnish.

I'll probably post more and better images after I adjust the bottom to break up that large chunk of yellow toward the front.

How big is that lander compared to the Thunderhawk?

Vaaish
07-10-2009, 03:24
Compared to a FW thawk it's about the same size, against a SG thawk, it';s about 2-3 times the length and much bulkier.

I made a few adjustments to add some script ot the sides and top and to adjust highlights/color balance; I think I'm going to shelve this one for the time being and if anything decides to pop out at me I'll make more changes. I think I've gotten the color balance issues worked out of the new setup now too so the highlights and shadows should be showing up now and the whole craft shouldn't look quite so radioactive.

Wow... just... wow.

The color looks much better, though I couldn't say whether it's the model or the photo (or both). I think the fist & laurel wreath symbol behind the cockpit is one of your best yet.

What's that painted on the sides under the 3 gun turrets along the spine?

Vaaish
08-10-2009, 16:48
Thanks, I'd say that it's a slight bit of the model since I touched up some shadows and highlights and a whole lot the photo. Got the light more diffused and lower intensity so the yellow wasn't radioactive this time which let me get the color range correct to show the shadows and highlights, unfortunately it also went a bit more blurry than the last round of photos but scaled down you can't tell that much.

I'm still not happy with my wreaths yet I need to work on putting fewer leaves in place so it's more clear what it is from a distance. The things on the sides by the turrets are bits of script and hammers or just illuminated letter blocks.

And I'm finally done with all 4100 points of my IG force. Future acquisitions will probably include another two epic40k bassies and 3 SG manticores to have a full artillery company in addition to the upgrades for the infantry companies. This now completes all three of my existing armies minus a couple of bits I'm still adding to the marines (Speeder detachment, dev detachment) Next on the plate are to finish up the six epic dreads for Cal before I move back to do some heavy conversions of their big 40k brothers.

Well, it's normal for a mech infantry battalion commander (or an armored cavalry squadron commander) to keep a company of armor as the reserve force for the battalion/squadron. It seems to me that Epic lends itself well to the sweeping, mobile style of maneuver warfare that came out of the Cold War. The fact that Epic IG armies can so closely resemble real-world forces is just a bonus... ;)

It's update time again, and here are the dreads I've been working on this week. I've got to say these are some of my least favorite of the current epic line. The proportions are really screwed up on them and the detail isn't the best nor are the poses (Everybody dance now comes to mind). All in all though, I think they turned out pretty well.

I'll be taking a break from epic for a few weeks to work on some heavy conversions of these guys larger brothers. After that I'll probably be hitting the last of the razorbacks if I don't work on them while mulling where to go on the conversions.

after much time lapse due to going out of town for a weekend and having to get my installation thrown together for my grad class, I'm back with the completed torso. It would probably look nicer with a bit of primer to help me find any remaining gaps but for now I think I'm ready to move on to the legs. I'll be redoing the shin armor, extending the leg length, adding groin armor, and adding armor to the tops of legs before moving on to finish up the modifications to the arms and finally getting ready to paint.

Continuing my long line of posts to myself, I've made more progress on the dread this weekend. I'm hoping to finish up the conversion work tonight or saturday on everything except the arms. I'm posting this because I'm not quite sure on the shin armor. Part of me thinks it makes him feel a little too thick around the ankles so I'm asking for opinions before I finish these up and put the cables back into place.

Its a crying shame a log of this quality gets so few replies especially with plasticard work like that.

I think the leg work is fine as it is, but any more and the temptations going to be there to take it too far. I'm not keen on the ankhs on the shoulders but itd depend on chapter etc.

28-11-2009, 02:32
Thanks, the dread is for my own custom 40k chapter that is egyptian themed, hence the ankhs :) I went ahead and did a combination style plating to give the impression of thicker armor in layers while hopefully keeping the foot size from becoming an issue and filed off some of the mounting point to let the shin plate sit closer to the thigh extension armor since most of the added thickness is in the front. I did an attempt with longer toes and it really came out looking more awkward than effective and I think the current look gives the impression of heavily armored but still mostly the same dread chassis underneath. This brings me to the question of the arms, should I round the edges so the curve matches the curve of the armor or round the shoulder so that from the front it curves to meet the top of the dread. Any thoughts?

The shape on the front of the shin is an adjusted stele shape that will end up with some kind of freehand picture on either side with hieroglyphics running down the center.

That thing is looking sweet dude!

I think the arms could use some rounding. I'm having a hard time visioning a dread with rounded shoulders. Now I would go with whatever you feel is best. So far though, its looking pretty neat.

Vaaish
28-11-2009, 04:49
yeah, they will be once I figure out which direction I want to round them. One way makes them more reminiscent of the heresy era dreads and the other matches the shapes I've already put into the torso.

30-11-2009, 01:38
Thanks. This has turned into something of a mix of pre-heresy and post heresy. And the final update for now, I've rounded out the shoulder to match the torso armor. I may go back and ad a riveted plate or trim to it but I kind of like the subdued look on the arms. I've also put in another AOBR dread to compare where it started to how it looks now. I'm going to put this aside for the time being to think about color scheme and work up some commissioned epic marine vehicles before looking it over again in a week or so and deciding if the arms are done and doing some final gap filling on the legs. However I have plenty of time to debate the arms since they will be the last bits I paint on the model.

I really like what you've done so far... I think that the shoulders need something to unify them with the rest of the model, though. I wouldn't make it too ornate or it will detract from the torso. Perhaps mirroring the strips that you added to the hip joint?

I'm a little skeptical about the head. It would match my Black Templars perfectly, but I'm not so sure about the mix of the crusader-style helm and the Egyptian imagery, but I'll reserve judgement until he's painted.

Vaaish
05-12-2009, 18:48
Thanks, I don't think it's necessarily that much of an issue for the helmet though since there really wasn't much in the way of helmets back then and I don't really want to use a death mask for the head since I believe it will humanize it too much and kill the impersonal war machine aspect. I'm holding off on any additions to the arms until the rest is painted up too. I've tossed around some ideas with the trim edging or added riveted plates but I'd like to see how it works without since whatever modifications I do to these I'll need to do to the final arms.

After a rather lengthy break from epic painting to convert up my first 40k dread, I'm back with a bit more of the commissioned epic marine force. This time it's the last of the razorbacks sporting a slightly different paint scheme and the first of the vindicators.

Dammit Vaaish, I'm not meant to be starting Epic till next year!

Gorgeous and tatty.

Am I right in thinking the best Epic Schemes use two main colours and two minor?

Vaaish
09-12-2009, 04:06
I wouldn't say there really is a set formula of number of colors to make the best scheme, but you probably shouldn't over do it unless it's nids or eldar :) I tend to use one primary color because the models are so small and it works good to have an easy to see color and then a secondary to break up the large chunks of color for interest. I don't count metals and weathering in that breakdown though.

And the next batch is done:
This finishes out the whirlwinds and hunters leaving me a measly 20 rhino chassis based vehicles to go :) I'll be taking a break through the holidays to work on painting up the 40k dreadnought I converted before hitting 4 preds and 4 more vindis.

Well it looks like I won't be making much in the way of progress on painting with temperatures sub freezing here and no place to prime the models indoors. However I had gotten the lower half of the dread and the base primed before the cold spell hit and I spent my vacation over Christmas painting up at least that much. As soon as it gets warm enough, I'm planning on finishing this guy up, but for the moment here is the teaser for the lower half for your consideration. The hieroglyphics on the front say Sah Nesew khetef ankh djed, ie. the kings son of his flesh, living forever.

Well the weather held last week and I got a good chunk base coated and ready to go so I'm good for the next week or so. I still have the arms left of this guy and I'm probably going to just leave the multimelta arm as is, though I'm thinking of adjusting the powerfist arm. I also just might leave it off entirely in favor of some forgeworld arms I've ordered (The MM is going to take a leave of absence for the plasma cannon once arrives. Also I'm trying to think what, if anything needs to go on the shin guard sides since my original idea will look funny with them angled as they are.

A Friend and I have also been working up a set of dreadnoguht shoulder blanks to cast as the basis for custom build autocannon arms and what ever else we might want to build, I'm attaching a shot of the constructions.

Thanks, I was trying to make him feel a bit better proportionally. I'll be working up a second one in here eventually and using some of the lessons I've learned with this guy to make him better. On a different note. a slight break for the dread, but I really had to get this guy done for the bolter and chainsword DIY swap since it had to be finished by the first of february. It's a little rushed and the lettering isn't the best (happens when you paint from 1pm to 2am and only get to the lettering at 1:30am) but he is done before the deadline :)

Thanks! I know it may seem like I've been doing alot of 28mm recently, but honestly it's mostly been the culmination of several fairly lengthy conversion projects that have been going on in the background for some time.

I've actually done quite a bit of work since my last post, and the dreadnought is 99% complete. I have some final freehand work and scripting to add and finish varnishing the plasma cannon arm and CC arm once the weather warms up enough. I'm not, however, going to post pics of it in it's final state until after I get a chance to paint up this little project:

I've never been fond of the TLAC arm from forgeworld and having some extra IG autocannons laying around I decided to make my own. Unfortunately, the ammo drum on the bottom got slightly off true when I was gluing it and I wasn't able to pop it off. The other bits that might seem off are caused by the perspective distortion on the shoulder as it angles back. They are actually true.

I'm also about half way through painting up some epic marine bikes... and by some I mean 10 stands of three bikes and three attack bikes. I'm hoping for the end of the week with them and I'll post an update when they are done.

No love for the dread arm I see :(

And back to epic with some perfectly wretched photos. I attempted a new method of lighting and editing and I think it failed rather miserably. The bikes themselves I think turned out alright though one closer observation these seem to be the most detailed yet poorly cast models I've worked with especially where it counted on the exhausts and bolter barrels on the front. Next up, predators and the last gun arm for my 40k dread. Cal if you want me to take some better shots, I'll give it a go.

I will say this: The autocannon caught my attention. That is one of the best conversions Ive seen yet, as it looks like it is a FW one or whatever. The way you cut the pieces up and rearranged them is very good. Something I have to keep in mind for possible own uses.

Thanks! I'm glad you noticed the autocannon. I'm pretty proud of that bit. It was one of those later evening what if I stuck this with this and huh... whadadya know, the autocannon magazine fits in there perfectly. After that it was just a matter of refining it. It is similar to the FW one but it has a fairly major difference in that the magazines are more contained by the arm itself rather that sticking out to the side. I personally find the FW to be too wide and ungainly with how the magazine are attached and I wanted to move away from that.

And while I'm at it, here's a pic of the whole army so far. The marines DO have transport... it's just not painted yet. :)

Are those original speeders or conversions?
Can we get a better picture of the chaplain?
What is that interesting-looking drill vehicle off on the left side of the picture?

I live to serve... :)
They are original speeders. The one on the left is unaltered, the one on the right I've added a converted tail fin to make a bridge unit between the new style flying shoe and the old style speeders. I think the aesthetic on the old ones is so much nicer than what we have in the plastic speeders. I have one more of those old metal ones that will eventually replace the plastic typhoon conversion in the middle. I'm also planning to make some converted weapons to make the old style ones into typhoons if I need to.

Bigger shot of the chaplain before managed to crack him off the base and center him:

Which ones are you referring to? The hill bunker with the underground door at the base is a combination of rocks from outside, the epic objectives bunker from GW and the rest of the underside from the crashed ship objectives with a few bits of BFG antenna in for good measure.

The other one with the Imperial Fists symbol and turret platforms is entirely scratch built from plasticard with little detail bits added like the skull aquilla, turrets and door. The bases on both are sculpted greenstuff.

Thankfully I hadn't tried to do many techniques beyond what I was capable of so I don't have to repaint all of my infantry. What this did mean was that this last week was spent touching up all my older models. The first thing was to go back in with black and sharpen contrast, mainly on the wrists, bumplate, and feet. After doing that I went back and rehighlighted the helmets and weapons on all of my marines since the highlights never show up in any of my photos. The last bit was to hit a few areas of the helmets with black to clean up odd bits and touchup the white highlights on the feet, knees, and helmets where needed.

While I feel I could probably use a bit of touchup on the metals and definitely the eyes since some of the eyes hark back to the days when I didn't leave a black edge around the lenses, I didn't want to spend that much time right now and I'm still not happy with the effect I'm getting with the combination of blue I've been using for the eyes.

Anyway, now that I've written a book, here's the updated marines:

And the lone lascannon gunner that doesn't get used much these days:

I've just been flicking between these shots and the army pic from the last page and the helmets definitely looks better now, with more contrast. Maybe they just photograph better, but my eye is drawn to the head of the mini and now I can make out the features more clearly. Great scheme.

What a great plog. You Sir single handedly got me into wanting to play epic. I am going o build a eldar army though. Keep up the great work on the armies. If I had to pick one.....it would be the SM!!!!

Thanks! Epic is quite a fun game and oddly enough I'm in a toss up between painting necron or eldar next. I'm leaning toward necron though since there is less I need to do to hit 3k and I really like their rules.

Stealth edit: Tactical front view since the top doesn't really show much.

I really like the missile launcher marine w/bolt pistol in the second picture. The pose is very dynamic, something along the lines of "Oh yeah? Well, take this!" :D

That missle trooper is one of my favorites too. Came from the new codex because marines now have bolt pistols and I like to keep them moving so it made sense he'd have the pistol out.

Ok, time for a new round of pics. This time it's Land Raiders and with another eight of them to go. RL has taken a toll and these took about a week longer than expected. Ah well. I think I'll be moving on to some skitarii now that I have an idea of where to go with the color scheme and especially now that the Skitarii list is coming into review.

The LR's look really good, nice lot of weathering on them.

Those Marines probably have the craziest colour scheme I have ever seen, theres so many colours all mixed in!! But it seems to work, I think your painting skill definately helps! Nice work!!

Thanks for the comments! Despite how it may appear, the color scheme is actually based on the color palette available to the tomb painters of ancient egypt since my chapter is based on that period.

Interesting stuff Darktitan. I just got my first Skitarii Demi-century is finished though I think I'll adjust the color scheme a bit on the next one. However, I won't be doing them for a while yet since I want to use this coming week to get the two praetorian servator detachments worked up. I see them as being much quicker than the last century and I need to figure out how to distinguish the tech lord from the tech priest on this one.

Thanks! I think it's more land raiders but in the mean time I've finished up both the Praetorian Combat Servator detachments. They just need to be varnished to knock back the shine a bit on some of the washes but I found I was out of the gloss varnish I use as my protective layer and I don't want to jot hit them with dull coat since these are game pieces. I'm trying out a bit different color scheme for the tech priests in the command stand to see if it works alright for the Tech lord's skitarii demi-century. Unfortunately these models seemed to lack detail on the back side and some ares were a little rough plus they didn't really lend themselves to any nice freehand bits on them. As combat servators though I think they turned out quite fine. I'm going to be taking a bit of a break from painting this next week to finish out some projects that were on hold the last couple of days but then I'll be back with the last of the land raiders before tackling the last of the skitarii.

Detachment One:

These were part of the pack that was made by the same guy who did the skitarii models I used earlier. Since I thought these would make a good model for the praetorians, I had to augment the numbers in the two packs with a few other epic troops... it turned out alright I think.

Well I surprised myself yesterday and today and managed to finish up the last of the ground vehicles for the commission with these eight land raiders. This leaves me with two tactical detachments before hitting the air and space components. I'll probably finish up the skitarii before I start in on those though and clean one more set of models off my painting table. I'm pretty happy with how the weathering turned out on them and I started more work on lettering at epic scales with Dorn and the Argus raider.

hehe, well it turned out alright I think. I might get around to posting pics, but time is going to be a precious commoditity in the next week or so. Despite the time crunch I got the pics taken of the second skitarii detachment. It's been a slow couple of weeks on painting but this now clears the table of my skitarii force until certain other items appear. I'll be back next week with more IF infantry and probably some speeders. Not much else will happen this week as I'm going out of town for a friends wedding and some other deadlines are coming due. Enjoy!
