View Full Version : Getting some armies started/finished

This will be my first blog. I joined here to give me some drive to get some of my many minis painted. I have been in the hobby for a long time, but I seem to buy lots and paint nothing, and its beginning to build up.

I collect many difference armies which is probably part of the problem, as I lose focus and switch between armies and game systems.

Hope the pictures will be useable, first time I have tried this.

During the course of this blog I will be painting units from these armies:-
Dark Angels
Bllod Angels
Black Templars
Ultra Marines
Space Wolves
Sisters of BAttle
Tau
Black Legion
Word Bearers
Eldar
Dark Eldar
Imperial Guard
Looking forward to hearing C&C as one of the other reasons I joined this site was to help improve my painting.

On the model above I have not finished the bases as I will do them at the end, so that they all look uniform.

On the Calgar WIP Im wondering whether to put more gold into the scheme or not. The front will be red, probably darker red than the cloak, which just leaves the bolters. Would these look reasonable in gold as to signify that there a one off type of weapon.

Regarding the kaskin sword. I was hoping this would stand out slighty as I wanted to highlight the squad unit leader. Thought I see your point, and I dont think its really helped by the red on the cabling. Maybe the red should have been more of a muted shade.

Heres two more of the units that I have been working on presently.

Thought I would show some more of my Eldar WIP. I havent painted the canopy on the falcon yet as am considering whether to paint it all one colour- possibly a bright green say scorpion green. I know that the Stones on the falcon in red are quite roughly painted. Just not sure what colour would be best. Any ideas

Heres some more WIP of the space marine variety, and a phoenix lord. I really dont think the colour scheme on it is working very well. I was thinking maybe of putting some gold/brass to make it look more unique/special. Any ideas. Your help would be most appreciated! Sorry for all the red models, it just turned out that way!

nice work, i especially like your kasrkins and falcon, i would sugest a pale green for the canopy as it would fit nicely with the fluff.
i would suggest using highlights on your models as it adds more depth to them. Also i personally would shy away from the glossy vanishes, other than that good job on the painting front.

CamNZ
29-04-2009, 23:43
I like Feugan, are you going to pick out some of the details in another colour? Maybe the face to give something to draw the eye. I agree with sniper_killer about the gloss varnish, you've done quite a nice job highlighting but it gets a bit washed out by the shine from the varnish. Looking good though.

Hey guys have a quick painting question. I have got to the point where Im ready to paint some storm troopers, and Im differing over the colour scheme for them. Im not sure whether to go for the same scheme as the Karskins above, or go for a black scheme to highlight there not part of the main army.

Your help would be most appreciated!

Woh, you have a heck of a lot of armies on the go there :D I like the look of the tanks especially.

The only thing I could suggest may be to thin your paints slightly. THis is more noticable on the Chaos, but also on the Wolves.

You hae a nice neat painting style though. I hope the log helps you get something finished :D

Hammer49

Thanks Crube. I have been trying to thin the paints more recently. Hopefully this can be seen on the tanks.

This log is just for my 40K stuff. Ive got a similar log in the WH section with a similar amount needed to be painted.

I vote for a black scheme to make them stand out.

I'm enjoying this log it reminds me of all my wee armies, that I still haven't painted. Damn real world! Bringing me down.

Hi Guys. I have a quick question. I have got back some feedback on rough riders, and decided I want some in my army, probably 10. However looking at the models available not only do they look outdated, they would be very expensive.
I was wondering what models I could use instead. I was thinking along the lines of chaos maurauder Horsemen (About a 1/3 of the cost of the attilians). I know the horses have some details relating to chaos, but would this be possible to hide. Also Im not overly keen on the Empire models for this as I see the rough riders as being tribal/feral, while the empire models just dont give this feel. Any ideas?

Here's what I've been doing recently. I am continuing to paint the iron warriors, taking longer than I hoped.and have just been putting together some of the nice SW Termies (10 to be exact). Been basing them as I go for a change. Also have tried the GW basing kit this time, as thought it would look good for SW to be based on something other than snow. It was that or try lava bases, but one step at a time.

The first Terminator in this picture is leaning forward alot, as I was trying to give the impression of striding at pace towards the enemy. Not sure if it works or not.

Does anyway have any ideas how to glue terminators to resin bases other than epoxy resin or superglue, as one of the terminators leg arrangements makes it almost impossible to drill through the bottom of the foot as the feet are both angled. Any ideas?

Here are some pictures of what I need to paint re my space marine armies not including chaos space marines. The following pictures are missing 4 Assault squads, 2 units of 5 Terminators, and 4 units of Space Wolves, 3 10 Man Tac Squad 4 land raiders, 4 Vindicators, 1 Rhino, 1 Predator and 2 dreadnoughts.
This all came about because I was Looking for a particular model in my need to paint box, and though id get a picture while most of it was out.

As its that time of year for new years resolutions, I am going to make a much greater effort to get my models painted. The whole point of this thread was to achieve this, but other things got in the way last year!
Presently Im designing army lists for each of my 40k armies, which I will try to follow on the painting side.

Have been putting together some of my wordbearers. As I quite like the series of books by Anthony Reynolds I have made some models to represent my favourite characters. Still need to do the Icon bearer Burias who is probably my favourite character. Just need to think of a good way to go about it. These are my first real attempts at converting.

This is my attempt at marduk before terminator armour.

However I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on painting the crux and other deathwing symbols on the terminators, and the power weapons which Im stuck on what colour to go with. Any help most appreciated!

Yip. I believe you are suffering from WSAS (Wargamers Short Attention Span). We all go through it but you need to focus, maybe even just get 1 squad/unit done before taking a break and doing another squad from some other force.

For me I like to break up my painting by doing different scales - 40K, then maybe some Epic, a Necromunda ganger, some Warmaster etc.

Re: your deathwing, they are coming along quite nicely. Keep it up. It looks as though from the pics they are the nearest completion.

I have this too. To overcome it I wrote a list of things i needed to do and things I wanted to do then chose one from each category alternately. Unfortunately update my blog wasn't on that list. It really helps to have a list with things you can cross off, as it makes it look like you're making progress. Which is good for morale.

To help get my armies done I signed up to the 'Tale of...' painters logs. I have been progressing each month, knocking a squad out each month and also doing the same army in Epic scale.

6 months in and I am well on my way to 2 finished armies within the year.

I mentioned in an earlier post about finshing the Landraider. However I got somewhat sidetracked on finishing two imperial guard tanks. Regarding gold I have found a nice way of doing it:
1. Mix chainmail with matte medium (dulls down metallic sheen)
2. 2 (slightly heavy) washes with Gryhonne Sepia.
3. Pick out edges with mithril silver.

Love the cape on your termie captain.

Heres some of my iron warriors. I still need to go over with badab black as metallics still abit bright in a couple of places, and also to do the horns on the helmets and shoulder pads, and of course the chapter icons transfers. In the pictures the armour looks brighter than it actually is.

Also before anyone mentions hazard stripes- I will include some in the unit but not on every marine as Im trying to go for a overall look for the army of dark and grim, and therefore not many bright colours on the models.
