View Full Version : So, our gaming group is starting 40k...

Hello Warseer, it's been a while since I last posted here. But as our gaming group have decided on starting 40k I and a friend (Tadaotoko) decided to start a log on our progress as our armies grow and expand.

What we have decided on is to paint a minimum of 200 points worth of models each month so that we once a month can scale-up our battles. This first month will be a hectic one as we need to build gaming tables and terrain aswell but on the other hand it will be nice to get things started quickly!

As we all starts our armies at the same time this will be an opportunity for us to build our forces around a story, none of us knows a lot about 40k fluff but we worked out that the basic background is that our battles take place on a former agri-world somewhere on the eastern fringe of the imperium.
The Planet has a large garnison of several Imperial Guard regiments as it have been under Tyranid infestation for a long time and the war was about to be lost after the presumed safe bunker of the Imperial High-command was breached by infiltrating Lictors and Genestealers causing confusion and disarray in the command-structure of the planetary defence force.

The fall of the planet was though halted, when the Officer in command of the 139th Krashnkofv infantry regiment together with adepticus mecanicus agents acted on their own initiative, unleashing ancient weapons of mass-destruction that where secretly beeing stored in an old bunker-complex. The Weapons where though not as powerfull as expected even though if major parts of the Tyranid horde was destoryed together with many allied regiments and turning the once green and fertile world into a dead, desert-like landscape.

It is recently after this event that our gaming starts, with me playing the 139th Krashnkofv that without yet realising it are working for the forces of chaos. And Tadaotoko will play Witch Hunters dispatched to bring repentence upon the hertics.
Our gaming group also includes Tyranids, Kreig panzer regiment, Cadian infantry regiment, Ultramarines and Eldar. (still have figure out why the eldar are there)

Well hope the background was satisfactory and we appreciate help with developing it further.

The green uniforms reflect the fact that the regiment was not originally intended for desert-fighting. I have some more of those in the pipe and hopefully they will be done by tomorrow. I may get some WIP shoots of the modular gaming table we are working on aswell.

This stuff looks great. If you're new to 40k, did your group play Fantasy or something else? edit: yes you did, I can see from your sig! ;)

(still have figure out why the eldar are there)

Maybe the 'Imperial agri world' was actually an old Eldar maiden world (one that they terraformed back when their civilisation was riding high and never got around to settling yet). They came back to kick the humans/tyranids off and are displeased to find the Imperials have sterilised it  There may be ancient webway tech or other relics on the planet that require cleanup too.

Yes actually there are more of us though I ain't sure if the others have any interest in participating in this log. However I can promise I will get some pictures of their armies when we get together to play our first games.

Hello its bean a while since my last post butI haw not don any real progress on the painting, but I haw don some converting all in very early wip. http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu105/Tadaotoko/P53100012.jpg
Now I only have the squad whit (9)storm troopers left for my 200p list and half of them are 90% finished.

Tadaotoko
09-06-2009, 18:39
During this weekend we didnít play the first 200p game as planned. People had not painted the points intended and the table wasnít finished. But instead of playing we almost finished the table and the terrain but this is something Skulliz can tell you more about, he has also taken some pictures of the progress. Now to my own army I haw decided to paint a SoB unit fore the 200p game instead of the Stormtroopers. And to do this I made some converting to the models first of is a vet for my SoB unit she will maybe work as a Canoness in smaller games before I make something else. I have also made a heavy flamer out of the storm bolter but it is still a wip the weapon is a long way from finished. I have also made an objective marker, and some miner changes to my SoB whit out helmets. The theme for the planet is a nuclear desert and al need to have gasmasks to breath. I am not a fan of this them due to the majority of my army not having helmets or gasmasks to start whit.

I love the objective marker and the little guy with the heavy bolter.

The convent looks about right (about as powerful and costed as a big stompa variant, say) but I think the armour value is too high. Even huge titans don't have rear armour 14: instead of high quality armour like a land raider, superheavies rely on their shields and the structure point system to keep them moving. It's also more fun for your opponent if more of his force has at least some chance (however small) of affecting your super heavy.

I am very happy that you like the models. And about the Battle Convent do you think putting rear armor 12 will make it more balanced?

And for later this day I will upload some pics of my SoB so you can comment on haw to paint their helmets but they will come after work.

Green Shoes
10-06-2009, 12:29
If you keep everything else as-is and drop the armor to 14/13/12, then you could probably shave off a significant amount of points from that thing, say 100-150. If you don't want to drop the points, maybe add a heavy flamer or two near the front or sides where access points are, as since it is a transport it will probably be getting quite close and it will keep with the SoB idea of, "Kill! Maim! Burn!"

Oh yeah, that's Khorne's idea too... hmmm...:D

Have you thought of adding Fire Ports to that thing, too?

I am really loving your models, especially those Henchmen. I am in love with that helmet on the Stormtrooper; has a very sleek look to it.

I think 14 14 12 is reasonable, it's the same as a shadowsword with armour plates instead of lascannons or targeters. The BS3 Shadowsword costs 450 pts and has fewer weapons and no void shields or transport capacity, and I think 14 14 12 is about the maximum for the baneblade type chasis you're going to build on.

To be honest I'm mostly just looking forward to seeing the conversionl!

Feale free to give more advices of how to field the model, I want to be able to make a balanced model for gaming. But now to my other Sob units. I need help deciding how to paint my Sisters of Battle. I have not yet decided the colors for the helmets and am in need of your opinion. Hi Tadaotoko!
Nice to see your army growing, fellow inquisitors are always a good thing. I think the Apoc Datasheet you have found is a little bit off balance. I would try to modify a existing datasheet to a more sister style vehicle. Take a look att the Doomhammer (http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m2440068_Imperial_Guard_Datasheet_Doomhammer.pdf) for some inspiration, i think it fits better in size too. Just switch some of the bolters for flamers and meltas and add some WH-specific traits.

Ohhh, and by the way. You should arm it with a inferno gun. Super size flamers fits the sisters perfectly :)

So the last weekend the Krashnkofv saw some action on the battlefield, and I got more motivated than ever before to get them all painted.
I've decided that for the next expansion of the force I will include my sentinel and some Rough Riders aswell plus whatever I need to round it off at 400.

So because of that I finally got done converting these guys:

The weapons on the thing so far is two twinlinkt flamers on sponsons two melta canons on top of it and a twinlinkt haevy bolter on the hull. It is for times as high as a baneblade and probably higher. So the first rules I was thinking of using to it donít fit any more so if you have any ides feel free to comments.

According to GW you canít mount a model on ether a bigger or a smaller base but when itís being played with we ignore the machine and for los only uses the little guy besides it.

I'm really digging that superheavy! Hope to see a lot more progress on that as it has so much potential right now.

Also, I may be mistaken, but I thought that you could mount things on larger bases, just not small ones? I hope that is the case because my Master of the Forge is set up much like your PCannon Servitor, just not nearly as cool as a giant metal emu, lol.:D

EDIT: OOOOOoookaaaay, I guess larger bases are allowed with opponent permission, so I don't think either of us are in too bad a shape, as neither a Servitor or a Master of the Forge benefit from having a larger base.

Yeah, about that. I guess I owe an explanation...

Things are that I got accepted at a school far from my home town and therefore will be moving to a small apartment which won't fit my airbrush and compressor among other things.

Therefore I decided to get all my airbrushing done before I move, as my infantry (and cavalry :P ) won't take up as much space to work on.

Actually I'm getting very close to finishing a vehicle and pics will be up this weekend, a hint is that it stars with an "V" and ends with "alkyrie".

Hello guys I have a question about what to put on the windows of the super heavy. There are eight windows on the thing so far and I been thinking of painting them whit motives from the history of the adeptus soritas. First of I was thinking to have one pic of the emperor god who they worship, and one pic of Sebastian Thor and of the Storm of the Emperor's Wrath. Maybe a pic of Goge Vandire but I have no idťe of hiss looks.

I am also considering putting a large window on the back of the battle convent. So what do you guys think I am in big need of inspiration I got 5 windows left.

how did you do the weathering on the valkyrie?

Well first of I airbrushed the entire model as it would look when it was new. Then I used A sponge to achieve neat down effects using a mix of chaos black and scorched brown. After that I sponged on bolt gunmetal.
Then I coated the entire model with purity seal and then painted on a thinned down black oil paint around rivets and in recesses. this was followed up with a thinned down wash of old rust MIG pigment around the very same areas. finally I airbrushed brown ink over random areas of the model to achieve a look of rust.

this though is just the general weathering effects I used. The key to achieving a good weathered effect is several layers of actually simply applied effects on top over each other.

So today I decided on what to putt on the windows. The main idťe is to putt one of the six sisters whom stood before the emperor and later formed the orders of the adeptus soritas. And for the two windows at the top of the battle convent I will put Sebastian Thor and ether the emperor ore Goge Vandire. Not 100% about Gorge hi did find the sisters and is a part of their founding but he was a traitor to the emperor.
And for the idťe of a big window in the back it will be a picture of the emperor. Ether on his throne, standing strong, or whit the six sisters knelling before him.

http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu105/Tadaotoko/Fonster_004.jpg

This is haw the windows will basically look like whit a person on the left and some text on the right side.

http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu105/Tadaotoko/Fonster_002.jpg

This is the core body for the six saints. It will be in different colors depending on their order. And whit different poses whit their arms depending on home they are.

http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu105/Tadaotoko/Fonster_003.jpg

This is my concept of the six different saints. The only one that rely stand out from the others is saint Kathrine who will haw wings and a big shield. She was the shield bearer and later a living saint.

http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu105/Tadaotoko/Fonster_001.jpg

And for the last one it is Sebastian Thor the new founder of the battle sisters. (Itís still only a concept)

I really like the window designs; very gothic in their chunkiness.

Were you planning on painting them freehand, or maybe cutting them out of plasticard, or something else? Because can see how painting them, if done right, could really be sweet.

If you do it painted-style, just remember the thick, black lines around each color pane to represent the silver (or lead or w/e it is) they use to hold the pieces together. Also, if you use duller colors, but with extreme highlights of that color in the center, leaving a darker outline (next to the black) I think it could make for pretty convincing stained-glass. The only problem with that is it may not fir every painting style, so be careful following my advice (that should just be a rule of thumb for anyone :p:angel:).

I'm eager to see what you come up with! :D

Tadaotoko

Thank you Green Shoes for the good advice.

I and Skulliz have talk about it and think that the best solution would be to make them on the computer. After scanning the best of the sketches I come up wit and then shrink them to the right scale. And hopefully white some purity seal it will hopefully look like the rest of the convent instead of like printed paper. But I will keep your advises at mind as I continue sketching.

More great stuff in this thread.

Skulliz: it might be that the surface of the varnish on the windows has dried rough; if you put water on the windows do they get easier to see through? If this is the case a second smooth coat of varnish might improve things permanently.

Tadaotoko: I love the Eversor. I don't think you should put Goge Vandire on the Sister's banner, I'm pretty sure they are trying to forget him!

It's just the surface then I guess.
I just did a quick google (don't use it myself) and purity seal is listed as a semi-matt or satin varnish. I think gloss might be more suited to this application.

Hello guys I has not been doing anything whit my WH lately:(. No progress at all due to a fantasy tournament that forced me to pay some attention to my WoC army. But now whit the tournament all over I will get time to focus on my SoB.

I been thinking of the frame for my standard sob army and I think I got it somewhat fixed. Itís a lot more competitive. I been going more and more to an pure SoB army and will probably putt the other stuff on hold to get myself a tournament army to play whit. The other tuff will be for fun games only and apocalypse.
