View Full Version : Chunks 40k Log

As I have no branched off into 'other' models (thats right, not GW!) I decided to keep my old log open for my more historical orientated painted. This log will now be pure 40k!

On with the show. Heres a WIP for a new marine army. I'd like to say he is a White Scar, but I'm thinking the white is not pure enough. Maybe a sucessor chapter.

heres hoping you enjoy it as much as my old log

I'm painting these boys with a completely different pallet, I've not used straight Vallejo model colour with no other range to mix in. It presents wonderful new challenges and problems to overcome :) Hence the Aquila turning out nicely.

Brilliant stuff mate, I've looked in at you other log from time to time and am really impressed with your painting style. the WS are gritty and realistic, great stuff.

What are the problems using the paints straight from the pot?

Lovely White Scar Chunk! Absolutely stunningly realistic paint scheme. Very natural.

No problems with the paint itself, they are alot more liquid then GW which is a good start point. I just ordered the big set and I'm only being sent about a dozen at a time. And me being an impatient sort couldnt wait to get stuck in with just the greys and browns... so the problem is improvising some of the more basic colours. But theres alot to learn from not having a wide selection.

So heres the next marine, the pose isnt as natural as I'd like. the painting is a little smoother I think, and more is done to make the transfers realistic. Hopefully I've caught an element of interaction with the envirement by making it look like hes crushed the grass in his path.

Nice painting, love the weathered look. Your bases are nice to, do you have any special theme for your bases?

chunk
17-05-2009, 17:32
The whole theme for the squad is that they have ventured into a run-down abandoned settlement, and are sifting through to find what may be wrong...

A bit like the start of Aliens when the marines land and find everything deserted with signs of a fight everywhere. Hopefully it will get a bit more pronounced as I make more of the squad

The poses, the subtle detail on the bases (such as the crushed grass) all tie in and make each mini look more exceptional than just the wonderful paint job you gave it. Great job chunk!

I dont really like playing with marines, so I may just finish these and see what I can get for them on Ebay. Was disapointed that it only got a 6 on coolminiornot, its far better than other stuff I put on their site. Ah well. I think my next proper army will be Cadians, as soon as they get here anyway.

I'm happy with the more subtle effects I've created, especially the way marines dont have to be performing elaborate acts of death dealing to look good

Don't worry about CMON, usually just a bunch of haters giving you low marks. It is easier to criticise than to actually produce what you have done.

Keep your chin up and get the rest of the squad finished.

I got the impression that cmon is just a big fan club, shame that you cant get the kind of feedback thats useful.

Tried something I've not done before, liquid effect. I'm showing off a few angles here, I was trying to suggest that we'd scooped a little of the goo of the floor and its dripping through his fingers.

With the eyes OSL I wanted something alot more understated, but still with a good visual. Any technique over used can destroy how the model looks to me, as its all about how the OSL (or whatever) rather than the mini. I hope I've achieved what I wanted, what do you guys think?

Very nice looking army you have here and I digg the goo dude.

Flying Toaster
27-05-2009, 19:57
Well nothing really more to add from my first post! Still awesome! Shame my exams are stiill in the way of painting any real amount of models. If you want some small advice then you may want to fill the gap between the hand and the arm joint of the Beakie marine with a small amount of green stuff since its a little bit obvious. Also if you want the marine who is standing in the puddle to look like hes on the edge of a lake you may want to rebase him then increase the base height slightly at one end to create some elevation to bottom of the model, filling in the water deeper as it goes from about half way but keeping the surface of the water level at the point you started.

Hope that helps!

Good luck to you Flying Toaster

Hmmm... is that you complementing yourself? :p

chunk
28-05-2009, 13:58
Unfortunatley I dont have access to all the modelling materials I know and love, including green stuff :( And 'puddle' marine is indeed on a offset elevated base, but I had trouble applying varnish consistantly and deep enough without any support to keep it in place as it dried. This is, of course, were clear resin comes handy...

And good luck means, uh, good luck?

Flying Toaster
28-05-2009, 20:12
Ah okay I didnt think you were using varnish, it may help to use some clear resin or even the water effect from GW.

And good luck means, uh, good luck?

Got these through yesterday, finished them this evening. I need to work on my pacing skills. No fancy techniques here, just solid old fashioned high lighting with a little weathering.

Fantastic weathering and armour chipping on the Space wolves, it really adds a whole new layer of realism to the models. I must ask though - are you intending to do the same with the Grey Knights or will you keep their armour 'clean'? :)

chunk
12-11-2011, 22:49
I always thought that the Grey Knights armour was bare metal, an essential part of their aegis suits. That and it would be much higher grade of material so it wouldnt corrode. It was with that in mind I decided not to weather any of the infantry. The vehicles painted heraldry has been worn down and covered in muck, as there is no way (or excuse) that a tank cant attract dirt.

In my mind if the two are together it reinforce the idea that the knights are a rapid strike force and never committed to any form of attrition warfare. Wheras the wolves would be bounced around with little admin time between battles, always racing to the next battle.

Morden279

Makes perfect sense - you clearly have the advantage of me in the fluff and common sense in terms of tactical deployment. Shows how much I know about the Grey Knights! Keep at it, matey - you're doing a fantastic job. :)

I had the shoulder pads sculpted by a friend on his computer, and had them cast for the army. Much better than trying to painting cheques on shoulder pads!

I have done more painting since my last update, the Lamenters are finished and a Necron force well its way. The Lamenters did much better at two tournaments recently, so I can put them to bed now.

The throne is a stunning model, and now it has been made in finecast it can survive in one piece for longer. It was badly miscast, both feet, banners, heads and mold slip between the legs. Had some fun using him in games alongside a Callidus assassin, but I think he will mostly sit in the glass cabinet.

Funny story about the Lamenters. I sold them months ago, as I do with most of my armies. It disapeared into the void (Royal Mail), never to be be seen again but hopeful that it would conquer a galaxy far, far away.

Then it turned up in my local GW, with a proud owner declaring how much time he'd spent painting them...

Personally I dont think I have done a good job on the Night Scythe. Not on a technical level, just it doesnt seem to look right for some reason. But if you guys like them, it cant be that bad! The immortal on the previous page has nothing to do with this army, although there is a hint if you look at the pilot more carefully.

spikyjames
10-07-2012, 20:27
Always funny when that happens mate, was it the same guy you actually sold them to?

As far as the Night Scythe goes, I would personally say it needs more done to the cockpit canopy area, at the minute I don't think it looks finished, maybe the same sort of source lighting thingy as you're done in the recess's on the wings?
