Good evening

I have decides to start this thread to post the advances in my vampire counts army. The background is clear, in life they were a chaos army, but the chaos lord was seducted by a vamp. After that, all his people was atracted to the un-living. The base idea is:

- Skeletons would be converted skeletons soy they look like the skeletons of chaos marauders
- Grave guards and black knights would be undead chaos warriors and knights

Thas is the starting point.
I have already advanced and posted the army in my group forum, so at the begining I would be posting a lot (I hope :D)

First lets start with some skeletons:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00368.jpg

At the begining some of them didn´t have horned helms but I decided to put it on all of them so I changed the heads after taking pictures...

Hi again

After the skeletons let´s go to the dire wolves. Originally I was going to use the new GW ones, I even painted one as color test, here you have my first idea:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00487-1.jpg

But I thought that I wanted something more converted (I’m a conversion guy, so I wanted some extra work, I hate only painting) so I started to think about some huge werewolves (it looked awesome in my mind) after some thinking I definitely decided to use the bodies, arms and legs of the plastic rat ogre blister and the heads from the goblin wolf riders blister. I decided to have them in 50x50mm bases (counts as two wolves) and 25x50mm base count as 1 wolf)

Let´s see the process:

First wolf (base of 50x50 mm)
- First a resin clone (just in case it gets wrong) and an imperial guy that would be used too (let’s call him “Poor Otto” :D)
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00651.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00655.jpg
- Now the complete scene unpainted but after all the green stuff

Second wolf (base of 25x50 mm)
- First the resin clone and the imperial friend (let´s call him “Unlucky Fritz”)
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00676.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00684.jpg
- Now the complete scene with all the green stuff
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00708.jpg

Third wolf (base of 50x50 mm)
- First the resin clone and the imperial friend (let´s call him “Brave Hans”)
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00686.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00685.jpg
- Now the complete scene with all the green stuff

Next I will post them totally finished.

Hard to explain it in english (I got all the information from Spanish websites) but I found a Spanish guy that is also maintaining and English blog, you can find it in:

http://ultrawerke.blogspot.com/2007/02/resin-castig-tutorial-part-i.html

The company that sells the products in Spain is called "Feroca" you can search their website in google, but I think that you would probably have a local company with similar products.

I hope it helps you...

Nice idea and great conversions. I really like the werewolves, although I have to complain about the way you treat upright Empire citizens for this vulgar display of strength, don't you know that's what Bretonnians are for? ;)

Hi again

Let´s continue with the werewolves, here we have the pictures of the final look after painting and dipping (conversion guy, not painter so dipping it’s my way…)

- First “Poor Otto”:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00775.jpg

- Second “Unlucky Fritz”
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00730.jpg

- Third and last “Brave Hans”
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00771.jpg

I also made a 25x50 mm base just in case I wanted to have 6 dire wolves instead of 5:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00793-1.jpg

- Formation of 5

CRAGUM: I do not work fast, this is stuff I had painted and completed sometime ago, it's just that I decided to post it in Warseer now (It has been posted in my Spanish forum during the whole process since I started this army one year ago). I'm in the middle of a "painting crises" (********* Vhargulf) and I thought that this could improve my morale and give me painting strength :_D

Thanks a lot for all your comments, it is refreshing me and giving me morale to keep on painting!!!

Good evening

Today some pictures of different heroes:

- First a vampire standard bearer, the miniature is a chaos hero with a small modification from the flagellant blister:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00493.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00495.jpg

It has the chaos simbol from the vampire (TH from Thalem of Chaos, background...)

- Second another vampire, in this case it is for the vampire with the movement talisman and the crimson armor (armor save 2+) the conversion is the cape to make it more dynamic

Good evening

More stuff, today the grave Wight king that I use as standard bearer. For this I use as base a Gamezone miniature, in this case the Khemri King on horse (very nice miniature):

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/GMZ-19-02.jpg

First I file a symbol in the head of the horse and I put some horns in the horse’s head, the horns are from the new bloodletters:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00757.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00758.jpg

Then I started the work with the Wight king:
- I put the horns from the Chaos warriors infantry blister
- I change the sword for a Chaos axe
- I put those skulls as cape brooch

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00760.jpg

And all together:

More about the Wight King:

- First I use the putty to convert the Egyptian cape into a barbarian cape. I also make the standard from the marauders blister, then I changed the horse’s tail for some chains form the Rat Ogres blister:

Boo: right now I'm working with the Varghulf and the ghouls, but I have tons of pictures form other finished units (zombies, more skeletons, corpse chariot, spectres, grave guard, black knights...) That's the reason why I'm posting so fast, as soon I post all the stuff already finished I will have to update slower.

And also I'm having "wet" dreams about my future Zombie dragon, just a note, I want to make it a Targaryen dragon (from GRR Martin books) and I'm thinking about a 3 head zombie dragon :chrome:

Hi everyone

Today some zombies…

First I have to say that although I painted the zombies quite late (I’m more or less posting in chronologic order) they were the first minis to be transformed. That’s the reason why they do not look as cool as the rest of the army. I have decided to make new zombies, better zombies, as massacred imperials, something that looks like “The dawn of the dead” something really gore. In the meantime I’m using these ones.

The background is clear; they were an ogre army that has been massacred by the undead army. The zombies are ogre (4 minis base), gnoblars (1 mini base) and also ogres in 1 mini base. Pictures:

really liking the orge zombie unit idea, i have wanted to do some myself using orges or something like skaven. it annoys me how gw have this feeling like everyone who is a zombie is going to be human. Technically there is more chance of it being something what isnt human as there is so many different races!

i think youve just made me think of an idea for my skaven swarm!

Good Morning

I’m going to post a brief tutorial about how to convert skeletons into barbarian skeletons:

1.- Tools:
- Cutter
- It’s indispensable an electric drill. With the first ones I used to use tons of different bits but now I’m only using three: a big one with blunt head, a medium one with circular head and a thin one with a sharp head:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00627.jpg

2.- Emptying the helm:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/cabeza.jpg

- First we use the cutter to cut the excess under the helm (the neck of the head) as showed in the cut line “1”:
- With the medium bit we empty inside the helm (direction “2”) more or less up to the eye line
- With the thin bit we make the eye holes (it should be big) direction “3”
- With the thin bit we e large the eye hole to make a face gap so we open the helm (marked as “4”) this need to be enlarged also with the medium bit.
- As final step we use the big bit to empty the helm as we made before in the direction “2”
RESIN VS PLASTIC CONSIDERATIONS
- Plastic: be careful, with the heat of the drill it’s going to melt and the bit is going to get bigger, so it could get uncontrolled. You should be cleaning the bit to avoid getting so big.
- Resin: it makes a lot of resin dust, do it inside a plastic bag and use security mask and glasses, your eyes and lungs will appreciate it.

After these steps the Helms would be empty, pictures before and after:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00628.jpg

3.- The skulls. The skulls must be cut so they can get inside the helm, the red lines shows the foreground cuts:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/craneocorte.jpg

You also have to cut in the back of the head, it should look like a prism and it should fit inside the helm (sometimes you would need to work again the helm to make the hole bigger) Pictures before and after the process:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00629.jpg

4.- Getting the skull inside the helm: glue and get it inside, if you are using plastic the same glue would fix the holes, if you are using resin ones you would have to do it during painting or dipping. Pictures:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00630.jpg

CONTINUE IN NEXT POST (6 IMAGES LIMIT)

IrraSevilla
12-06-2009, 10:24
5.- The problem of this process is that you could not use the neck in the body anymore, you would have to cut, pin and use glue for it. Pictures:
In this picture the pin was really small, I changed it after the picture.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00631.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00632.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00633.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00634.jpg

That’s all for the helms, you repeat this for EVERY skeleton, you change the weapons for barbarian axes, you use capes and other stuff and you would get a really nice group of barbarian skeletons.

It could look like a really long process, but after a while (At the end I convert more that 100 skeletons) you would do it quickly (at the beginning it was 20 minutes for a single head, but now I do batches of 5 heads in only 20 minutes, 4 minutes/head)
I hope someone finds it interesting. Any doubts just tell me!!!

Good evening again

As promised, some pics form the Hotel. Today I’m going to post my vampire knight. This was the base of the army; I bought the Archaon mini because I loved it although I played no Chaos at all. For 5 months the mini was in the box on my shelf. I couldn’t stop thinking how to use it, finally the light turned on and I started the idea of the Chaotic vampire counts army.

At the beginning I uses a chaos marauder head, but it didn’t looked undead enough:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00900.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00901.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00910.jpg

Then I repainted it, but it looked more like powder than like a vampire:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00949.jpg

So I removed the chaos marauder head and I used the Zacarias head, now it looked like a vampire:

Hi everyone

Today just some other skeletons (you always need a lot to raise them from the dead)

I make some more (including a musician just in case I use 3 units):

That vampireknight is pretty wicked. He looks really crazy and evil with the necrarch head. Good work on him!

And the skellies are just as great as the first ones. My varghulf got me held up for quite some time too. Could not for the world decide what to convert it from! I'm anxious to see yours now! The Graveguard will be interesting as well.

Hi

Something for the weekend: GRAVEGUARDS!!!!! (lot of trumpets and drums).

At the very beginning of the army I make a grave guard test, I used the caped chaos warriors (background is undead chaos, so..) and I used a skull for one of them, this was the result:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00417.jpg

But they didn't look as good as the skeletons. All my WHF group told me that they sucked if you compared them to the skeletons, and I agreed with them. I started to think how the h… was I going to do them. After a lot of thinking I started an “alpha” one and I change my mind three times during the conversion process, this is the result and the final look of the grave guards:

Good luck ranking them up, man. I tried putting the chaos warriors on 20mm bases to convert some barbarian greatswords, but they just didn't want to cooperate. I hope you have more luck.

Some answers to the feedback:

About the helmets: I had already finished this 15 unit, but I will try it in the second unit.

About ranking them: it's a pain in the neck they only fit in one form, so I had to number them under the base :)

I had to put them on those 4-man 80x20mm bases. Even then I had to make them stand at strange angles. Your GG look fantastic, though.

To make their faces pop a little more, you might consider some kind of "evil" eye color. Perhaps a bright green or white?

You are missing nothing ;). It's me, I started this army one year ago,I was posting in "real time" in my Spanish forum, one month ago I decided to post it here so I started from the begining and I'm keeping the posting order.

Good things: I will be posting regularly every pair of days for a while

Bad things: most of the tips (some of them are being really interesting) can not be used as all this stuff is already finished (and played of course :chrome:)

About the vargulf, just a word: BIG. It's big, really big. If you compare the official one with it, it's like comparing humans and trolls :D

The chaos dwarves idea is TERRIFIC!!! I will do it for sure!!! I will start looking for some chaos dwarf, if I can not find some cool miniatures I will convert it from the new plastic dwarf. Indeed I have not started them because I had no cool ideas for them.

Good evening

As I’m going to be out of town due to work I’m posting tonight the grave guard tutorial. It does not cover the whole process but covers the main point:

First we cut all the pieces from the chaos warrior body, you should use the electric drill (those of you familiar with the chaos warrior body would understand how hard this task is):
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00505.jpg

Then you have a pair of legs and a converted head (it’s not necessary a body, a piece of plastic or pin between head and legs would work, in this pictures I was testing):

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00503.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00504.jpg

Then you put the guy inside the armor:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00506.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00509.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00507.jpg

The last steps would be the cape and the arms, but that is not very hard.

Sorry about not having all the pictures 

Cheers

24-06-2009, 17:30
Good evening

I promise a unit shot as soon we have the 15, I also promise an army shot as soon I have already posted everything that is in the picture. Today let´s go for the 4 graveguard filler. As I talked I wanted them to be real Grave-guards, so what is better for filler than an actual grave???

I just knew that it was going to have this on the top:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00580.jpg

The old tomb from MB Heroquest (how many of us did start all the gaming/roleplaying/hobby with this all-around the world???)

I started with the structure using some plasticard for the walls and some plastic sticks to make it stronger (it’s not a skyscraper so with this would be ok):

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01040-1.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01041-1.jpg

I make a door with plasticard and I changed the HQ tomb so it looked more like a Chaos champion grave:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01042-1.jpg

I put altogether and used some green putty to make the interior of the grave, ideally it goes downstairs:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01072.jpg

I put those lances to make it cooler (bad idea, it’s a pain in the heck to transport it, right now I’m planning to change the lances per torches):

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01073.jpg

(CONTINUE IN NEXT POST DUE TO IMAGE LIMIT)

24-06-2009, 17:31

As I wanted to have skulls covered walls, I make tons of skull with the resin casts (I make around 200 skulls):

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01074.jpg

With some white glue I covered the walls:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01075.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01107.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01109.jpg

Finally I wanted to have a chaos grave guard appearing in the dark so I make this:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01111.jpg

That´s the way it looks:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01113.jpg

Next day the painting...

Yeah the lances are a little ... over the top lol. If it was part of a scenery, then yeah it would look awesome, but if its part of a unit...

I think it'd be cool if you kept the hands, but like you said, use torches or swords or maces, or even axes.

I think it'd be extra awesome, if you model one hand, to be grabbing a severed head; or two or three hands grappling a tomb robber (or foreign soldier) while they're screaming for dear life. Ho ho ho.

Good morning

As promised today let´s go with the corpse cart. From the very beginning I was sure that I wanted to do it from scratch, so that´s what I did. First I make a cart base using some soft wood:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00750.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00751.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00753.jpg

Then I cut some plastic spears in slices like they were pepperoni and I used the glue so they look like nails:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00816.jpg

After this I started to decorate it with the bells, the spears with imperial heads and those strange hooks (we will see why they are there…)

As wheels I used two copies of the imperial tank wheels, but I changed it so they look grimmer now:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00749.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00828.jpg

A brief advance of the draight ogre (he is already a Zombie after being defeated and he's a slave now):

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00829-1.jpg

I'm not very pleased with the green putty.

i have to agree though sadly that those sears are a hint epicly long but the ideo looks ace on it just maybe shorten them.

the corpse cart is reminding me of what im doing at moment, lots and lots of wood makes a model look right to me instead of ever using plasticard for fantasy

i have to ask whats going on the cart? any dead?

Hi again

A short break in the corpse cart to post the mandatory pictures of my work area. In this case is my tiny hobby room.

A shelf with all the boxes and various stuff:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01266.jpg

The work table (quite messy), you can see some stuff I’m working with at the up left corner:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01265.jpg

The main shelves with some comics, the two trophies are WHF fantasy ones (Best general with Skavens, and best converted army with the vampire counts)

Details of the shelves:

First all the stuff I use for the resin castings:

Let’s continue with the corpse cart after that brief break. Another detail of the cart with just base colors:

And at this point we jump and we have totally completed (I had to play a tournament and forgot to take pictures) the final result is too dark for me, I make some errors with the mix I use for dipping and it get darker. Also due to the tournament I had to go quicker, I should had converted more the ogre so it looks more undead and also the base could be more decorated. As I need another corpse cart, I will take more time for the next, pictures:

that cart is pure evilness, i love the fact your army has like scenes going on in every unit! the tomb looks great the question is how do they move :D i joke its great really.

that cart i love how the empire troops are just purely getting screwed over as the orge casually in my eyes is shouting out... 'Bring out your dead!' and in the distant background theres a chaos undead warrior hitting a cat against a wall... [python fans back me up here! }

keep up the great work though :D

Good morning

Today let’s go for my Wight King on foot. I wanted to make it look like the grave guards but cooler, I wanted to use it as Wight King with Krell’s black axe. So this is what I made:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00957.jpg

In the picture you can see the different part:

- The main body, I transformed the helm with those huge horns
- The axe is transformed from the new chaos knight sprue
- The cape is transformed to differentiate it from others grave guard
- The standard would be use or not so I can use it as BSB also

Details of the main body (I put that platform so it can fill in the unit):

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00968.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00970.jpg

Details of the cape:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00961.jpg

Details of the axe:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00959.jpg

Details of the standard (sorry for the picture), you can see the pin that would be used to put and remove the standard in the platform of the base.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00967.jpg

I will keep updating…

This is the way it looked when I firstly finished it, I realized that it didn´t fit in the grave guards unit, mainly due to the huge axe. So I decided to change it and this is the final result:

This is seriously such a cool army. Its a theme I've toyed about with before - since the early days of the Krell miniature. Since Krell was supposed to be a Chaos lord raised from the dead, a Chaos army raised from the dead always appealed, but time and effort got the better of me. I tip my hat to you, sir.

Black_omega: thanks a lot, that motivates me to keep working in this army (altough at the moment I'm in a break due to my future lizard army :D)

Baphomael: thanks also, the chaos-undead is a combination that always looked great in my mind. In deed I do not understand why all the official undead minis (grave guard specially) have such a vampiric look, if they were normal arriors (empire, bretonnia, chaos, elves, etc) in live...

First of all thanks a lot for all the feedbacks and especially for the awesome ideas I’m getting from all of you!!!

After that, let’s continue with some wraiths…

For them I use the same look than the grave guard but I wanted them to look like ghosts, I used the new Khorne demons sword. I used a vamp from Gamezone as Banshee.

Some of the WIP, I added later some GS to the wraiths:

I do not know the company of the miniature, my brother gave it to me. I think it has that "Chaos" look for the army. I really like the belt with those snakes, they remind me the movie "Conan the Barabarian" with the standard "two snakes, black moon, black sun..." what a good movie, not like the second part (piece of rubbish)

I hope you like the necromancer. After this we are closer to the Varghulf, I can heard it behind me, it want to be known...

Hi everyone

Again thanks a lot for all the feedback and support, also for the critics (that’s something very important to improve!!!)

Today we will cover the black knights. Here it’s a brief tutorial about how to do Chaotic undead knights; it is also applicable to any other type of undead knight. In this case we used:

Sprues:
- New plastic chaos knight (awesome one of the best for any kind of conversions)
- Skeletons heads (khemri or classics)
- Legs from khemry cavalry

Tools:
- Cutter
- Driller with the same bits that were used in the barbarian skeleton tutorial (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3668602&postcount=48)- Another bit for the drill that should look like a milling tool

-First we have a transformed head with the chaos helm and the skull inside, this was covered in the barbarian skeleton tutorial. In this case you have to add a brief neck, you can do it with a part of a skeleton arm:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00803.jpg

-Second we go for the body, in this case we have to empty the chaos knight body for this I use the medium and big drill-bit.

Before:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00804.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00805.jpg

After:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00806.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00807.jpg

-Third we go for the legs, we would have to cut the khemry cavalry piece as it is body and legs in one piece, the body is reusable for some evil skeletons!!! You will have to pin it and also you will need to cut the hips so they can get inside the armor:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00808.jpg

(CONTINUE IN NEXT POST DUE TO IMAGES LIMIT)

IrraSevilla
09-07-2009, 11:04
(CONTINUATION OF PREVIOUS POST)

-Fourth: we put some green putty inside the body, some glue in the plastic and we mount the body, the pin and the neck will get caught by the green putty inside the body and the plastic glue in the borders will maintain it together:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00809.jpg

At this point we will have to let it dry so it doesn’t split into pieces.

-Fifth: in the meantime of the body’s drying we go to the arms. Using the drill in the right and left arms of the chaos knight we can get: 2 shoulders, 2 elbows armor and 1 forearm armor:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00810.jpg

-Sixth: once the body has dried we can put the shoulders, this is really cool, because this piece let us to put the warrior in any position (not like the grave guards with the cape), in the picture we see it on the horse:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00811.jpg

- Seventh Now let’s go to the chainmail over the legs, with the milling drill pin we remove the stuff we don’t need, in the same picture before and after:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00812.jpg

And after sticking it (it starts to looks really well):

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00813.jpg

-Eight, after putting the right weapon in the skeleton arm, we put the forehand armor and we put the arms in the miniature

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00814.jpg

(CONTINUE IN NEXT POST DUE TO IMAGES LIMIT)

IrraSevilla
09-07-2009, 11:06
(CONTINUATION OF PREVIOUS POST)

-Ninth: we put the real shoulder armors:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00815.jpg

And we have it (without shield) this one does not have a really cool legs armor but as you have seen you can have really nice armors:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00796.jpg

Quick tips:
-Paint the main body without arms and put it later.
-Be careful with the shields and weapons, they are really hard to fit later

I hope you like it, tomorrow or during the weekend I will upload the painting ones:

Liam, that really makes me happy. Indeed you can have a really nice Imperial army if you apply some of the techniques I have used, I mean, real imperial undead heads by using skulls and imperial helms; and nice undead knights (not just the body of the imperial knight and the skull...)

Hi again

Here we have the knights painted. Originally I transformed 9 of them; I used for the tournament a huge unit of 9 knights and a King with Drakenhoff standard, very hard, but really expensive. Right now I’m transforming another two so I can have two units of 5 or one of 6 and another of 5 plus hero.

The pictures by pairs, first two normal knights:

Hey man. Good job on the Black Knights!
You're painting them up nice and crisp, the dipping is really working out for you and the whole effect is very impressive. You're also taking rather nice and clear photos but ... just a little tweaking and you can capture the real color!

Sorry if I'm out of line but I just felt the yellow tint on the photos was hiding what is a very nice paint job.

I use an old watered down version of Photoshop called Photoshop Elements. It came free with my digital camera. If you have any version of photoshop you can start by doing "Auto Levels" (It's under "Enhance" in the menu in my version). If you find some other free Photo Editing Program you'll probably find some kind of automatic color leveling that does the same thing.
After you resize a photo down to something like 800x600 it's very good to sharpen it. It's under "filters"-"sharpen". I use "Unsharp Mask" set to "1 pixel" and somewhere between 30% and 75% (30% on your photo, more if a photo is taken with a very sharp lens, make sure not to overdo it, then it looks fake).

This is what I do to all my photos: Auto Levels - Resize - Unsharp Mask

"Auto Levels" or any color Leveling is the most important part. Sharpening is cool but not necessary.

On your photo I then went into "Levels" and tweaked it just a little more to make the change even more impressive but that's just a very little change and nothing I'd do when editing many photos at once.

Features like "Auto levels" and "Sharpen" can be found in most Photo Editing software so you don't necessarily need Photoshop, but Photoshop can be trusted :D

Thanks a lot Solun, I will correct all the pictures and upload again ti photobucket so all the pictures would look better!!!

I have photoshop so I will do it, for the old one just autolevels (it's quicker) the new ones will have more tunning.

OK, cool. Good luck with that!

You can also make the photos better before using photoshop by learning to use "White Balance" on your camera and using Daylight rather than your Desk Lamp when taking the photos.

I think using Auto Levels after taking the photo is just as good as correcting the White Balance before taking it, so it's just a matter of preference.

Why have ALL the pictures from the log been deleted?

Only for half an hour. I have upgraded them with photoshop, now I'm uploading them to photobucket, but in order to do this without modifying the links, I need to delete the old versions before, all of them would be ready soon.

With better colours!!!

What dip do you use?

Secret spanish recipe mix :D

Just joking, it's not a commercial product it's a mix of matt varnish and something called "betun de judea" in english it's sold by Vallejo as "Asphaltum-weathering agent". Lord Azoth (check his Dark elves plog) told me how to produce it. It's awesome for lazy painters :D. I will post later a brief tutorial to produce a mix bottle.

Hi again
Some dipping lessons…
As promised I will talk about the dipping mix I use for my army. It is a handcrafted process and I couldn’t talk about it without being grateful with Lord Azoth about this, he was my master!!! You can check his dark elves plog here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=161116) (also using this dipping mix but not a mix as dark as mine). The mix is basically matt varnish and something that Vallejo calls “Asphaltum-weathering agent”. But let’s go step by step…
First, what do we need?

-Matt varnish: I always use the one from Marabu with the barcode 4007751004857, Marabu has another one that does not work. “Could I use another matt varnish?” maybe, I tried with Vallejo and another one (maybe Tamiya, not sure) and it didn’t worked.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00916.jpg

-Asphaltum-weathering agent: this is something used in fine arts, in Spain is called “Betun de Judea” it’s used to make things look older. Normally I use Vallejo one. You can buy it from different vendors, it would be more or less dark.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00921.jpg

Second: we need to let the varnish settle, for a day or two, it will look as follow:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00919.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00917.jpg

You can see that it has split in two layers, a white liquid at the bottom and a “kind of” transparent liquid at the top. We need to remove a part of the transparent liquid, in the picture you see the green line, you have to remove the excess.

Third: once removed the excess you need to stir the varnish a lot, until the white layer and transparent layer until it’s totally mixed:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00920.jpg

Fourth: Once it is really mixed it’s time to add the asphaltum. You need to add only 1 to 3 ml of asphaltum. I recommend to do it with a syringe. It’s better to start with less than 1 and then adding if you test it and it’s not dark enough. You can use different quantities in different jars so you can use them for different armies.
After this you need to stir it, and after stir it again, and again, and again, and then again. And then you will have this:

This mix is really dark, I lighted it with more varnish…
You could use at this point the mix for you miniatures. Remember that you do not need to varnish because you are varnishing them with this!!!
TIPS:

If you are going to dip this way, it better to use white as base layer
You should mix your colors with water 70-30 for Vallejo , 60-40 for GW
The result it’s better with two layers of base colors.
I normally do not dip the miniatures inside the jar, I use a fine brush.
Some seconds after brushing the mix it’s good to remove the excess, you will have some drops in the model. IT’S NOT AN INK, if you do not remove the drops they will become solid.
Colors that look great with this dip: reds, oranges, greens, metallic, browns, flesh, grays..
Colors that look strange with the dip: blue primarily
Dry brush after brush-dipping looks really good
MOST IMPORTANT ONE: YOU MUST STIR THE MIX EVERY DAY, IT ALWAYS MAKE LAYERS, SO YOU MUST STIR EVEN IF YOU HAVE USED IT THE SAME DAY.

Up here it’s everything I do, but you should:

DO NOT paint lights or shadows before the dip. Dip after base colors, and once it dries you can paint the lights and shadows. The mini would improve a lot.
If you really want to learn how to paint, THIS IS NOT THE WAY, this is just an easy way (quicker but not more powerful…) for lazy painter (I am). If you want to become a really good jedi painter knight you would have to do it layer over layer…

VERY IMPORTANT: if you are sensitive to strong smells you should do it in an aired room, the mix is quite strong and some people get headache with this.

And finally an example with a model:
BEFORE: only base colors

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00723.jpg

AFTER: dip-brushing the mix:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00724.jpg

Any doubt just give me a shout.

Good luck mixing!!!

Hi

I have added a poll to the thread, I have stuff from my other armies (Skaven, Empire and lizards) and I do not know how to post them:

- Should I rename this thread and post all my stuff together?
- Should I start a different thread per army?

I would really appreciate to know what do you think guys...

Start up a different one for each army, especially if you have so many.

Solun Decius
16-07-2009, 02:41
Hmmm... Pros and cons! (I think separate threads are good if you expect frequent updates on all of them, otherwise one big one).

Separate threads:
Pros: Each log will be neater and simpler to browse. They will be a better/cleaner documentation of your work (and you can give each one a suitably funky name!).
Cons: If you don't update one log for a while (because you're busy with the other armies) no one will see those models, right?
Also, when you finish an army and stop updating it'll just get lost.

One big thread:
Pros: Each time you update one army, new people can browse and look at all the other models as well. Subscribed users will also be subscribed to any new army when you start it (don't underestimate how long it takes to get regular readers on a new thread).
Also, when you finish an army and stop updating it'll always be there and pop up with the other new updates.
Cons: The thread will get bigger and more complex and it will be harder for people to browse the whole thing and get up to date.

I do separate threads for easier browsing and cleaner documentation but some of them also get lost for a very long time between updates.
On the other side would be something like Harry's "this week I've been painting" log which is excellent and very popular (and very old, long and complicated too, but anyone can browse through all his old stuff, each time the thread pops up with a new update).

I'm not going to answer the poll since I'm now completely undecided, haha :D

Good morning

In the meantime of the poll decision (I really think like Solun Decius, both of them have pros and cons) let’s continue with the army.

Today more skeletons, in this case I wanted to do something different. A friend told me that it would be really cool if I could convert some skeletons and any kind of hound so they look like an undead hunting party. It was a brilliant idea, so I started to work:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00923.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00924.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00925.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC00926.jpg

As you can this count as 15 skeletons:

6 per every hound
3 the champion that is leading the hunting

The bodies of the hounds are from khemri horses, the heads are from the new dire wolves sprue, I made a cast and removed all the hair.

Tomorrow the painted pictures...

I hope you like it.

That's a really cool and clever conversion.
Maybe it could still use more regular skellies to fill up the 15 bases better. It'd also look more chaotic and unruly.
Very cool though, love the champion's pose and the chain!

Will be very neat to see them painted.

Oh and about the threads issue, I voted for seperate threads for your different armies. Because it would be easier to follow one army at the time. :)

In Spain it would be illegal if I would sale them or if I would be reproducing pieces that I do not own, but I have bought them and I'm just reproducing for personal use without any profit, it is totally legal under Spanish legislation.

Maybe it's different in the UK or US but in Spain that's the way it works.

Hi again

As promised, today is the V day, the Varghulf day. It was not easy to finish it, neither to start it. I had no idea of what to use. I just knew that it had to be bigger than the dire wolves/werewolves. After a lot of searching I thought that I could use the Doombull as a base:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/newimageasp.jpg

But the body was not big enough, but I liked the head (without horns). I put the project in the drawer until I bought the zombie dragon and I thought that the body was perfect as a base for the Varghulf. So I made a cast just in case I screw it. These are the pieces I was going to use:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01135.jpg

From the dragon zombie: arms, claws, legs and body
From the Doombull: head and I make two copies of the shoulder

This is how it looked after I pin it:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01136.jpg

I removed the horns, it looked like a rave bat head:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01137.jpg

As you can se in the back the casts are not perfect and the horns are not ok (it will be corrected…):

Before the pictures some feedback…

Txan: I thought about a tail, I even put a test with bluetak but I preferred it without it.

Boo: the best things are those that you have to wait for ;D, about the hydra idea it sounds good, maybe one day…

And after this, let’s continued with the Varghulf, in this case these pictures are part of the green putty process. First I added a lot of hair:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01140.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Irra1979/DSC01142.jpg

Brilliant conversions all round! I always thought that the new graveguard looked rather like chaos warriors but yours take the idea to a whole new level.

well israel, this is one insane job. you actually take the time to make your models one of the best around warseer. no comments except one.

the head of the vampire lord (archaon) looks a bit clumsy and beasty imo, not really royal. if you dont want to replace it,(you shouldnt:P) you can greenstuff a dreadlocked beard and a hair-mane on his back. all dreadlocked. thats pretty cool imo. i hope i gave you some nice ideas. if i didnt, i tried at least:P

good luck israel!!
