THE TALE OF FANTASY PAINTERS 2008-2009 MONTH 10

Hello chaps,

So an exciting month for some. If you have not used a Joker yet you have painted 2000 points. Well done.

Everyone should be between 1,600 - 2,000 points (depending on how many jokers you have used). Some of these armies should be looking nearly complete.

This is the thread on which you post your work for month TEN. (The work you have done in the month of MAY).
Please make only one post per army in the first week.

Your post should include:

1) The description and points of the unit AND YOUR TOTAL POINTS SO FAR.
2) Any additional information you care to share with us about your painting.
3) Up to four photographs of your months work and the army so far.

A WORD ON PHOTOGRAPHS

You can use up to four photographs (the maximum allowed in a post by warseer). To show us your months painting and the 'army' so far. The best size for showing your work is 640x480 (It can be smaller or you can use ‘thumbs’ which link to bigger pictures but they must not be bigger or it takes too long for the pages to load). The best thing to do is to resize them, wherever you are hosting your images, and then drag and drop the ‘img code’ directly into the text.

THIS MONTH (JUNE) WIP THREAD

AFTER THE FIRST WEEK ... This thread will become the 'normal' ... comment and crit’ of others work, Work In Progress (WIP) pictures of your work as it develops, how you are getting on, seeking advice and encouragement for your ideas and your painting and generally chatting about the project, life and the cosmos.

However, please continue to only post your work for the first week. This is to give everyone a chance to post up their finished work before it gets lost amongst a sea of chat and WIP shots.

The MONTH 9 Thread will remain open through-out this week so folks have somewhere to continue to chat about the Tale.

I hope everyone has had a great months painting.
I look forward to seeing everyone’s work.

All the best
Harry

WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of August 2008 and finishing with their last post on the last day of July 2009.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.

THE PAINTERS:

We have made a little change in how we keep track of how much each person has been painted so far. Braad has very helpfully taken over the record keeping for the Tale and will be the one responsible for outputting the tables showing how we are doing from month to month. If you spot any mistakes in the tables, get in touch with Braad.

Hey guys it's me. Glade to see all the armies are going so well. I have two things to say.

First I'm sorry I haven't been very respeonsive to everyones armies. I have had lots to do with drawing, schoolwork, job hunting, and commission work amoung other things.

Second I have to drop out of this tale. I've been working on lizardmen alot recently and haven't had time, miniatures, or GS to work on chaos dwarfs or enough time and miniatures for warriors of chaos.

Sorry guys.

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: a Dreadlord general and 10x Shades

BUILD/CONVERSION: Standard build straight from the box.

PAINTING: Blacks are highlighted up with Shadow Grey. Purples are Liche Purple highlighted up with Dwarf Flesh. Skin is a Bronzed Flesh basecoat, Ogre Flesh wash, highlighted up with a mix of Elf Flesh/Skull White and then colour added with a selective light wash of Baal Red. Wood on the Shades weapons is Dark Flesh highlighted up with Terracotta followed by a Devlan Mud wash.

HIGHS AND LOWS: A fully finished 2000 points, at last! But this isn’t the end. I’ll be back in the boys league next tale to get the army up to at least 3000 points. I may drop back in before the end of this tale with some additional goodies, if I can stop spending all my time painting up my new shiny Orc fleet for Uncharted Seas!

POINTS: 300 points (160 for the shades, 140 for the Dreadlord). Army total is now 2085 points.

PLAN FOR NEXT MONTH: Probably nothing, but I do have some things in the pipeline which may make an appearance before the tale is finished!

Dark Elves.

Unit: 12 Witch Elves with command, Death Hag with Cauldron of Blood, Dark rider and Sorceress.

Points: 467

Army Total Points: 3464 (somewhere along the lines I missed adding in a whole month’s points total and made some miscalcultions.)

Models: 109

Background: The brides of Khaine have landed, dragging their dread altar with them. A Dark rider brings word of their arrival, and another Sorceress tags along just to keep an eye on them.

Build/Conversion: Straight from blisters. Sorceress is from Guild of Harmony.

Painting:Nothing special, some very faint marble effect on the statue. The blood was finished with some Hard Coat to give it a glossy shine after using Dulcote as the main sealant.

Basing: Sand, GW Charadon Granite, Vallejo MC Stone Grey, flock/static grass.

Highs/Lows:Forgot how much I disliked painting large amounts of flesh on whole units.

Still to do: They're done.

Hey guys, I know I'm already tagging along really badly but I do intend to finish the Tale with 2000 points. However, I'm not going to get anything posted until the end of this month/ beginning of next. I'm off on holiday Saturday & don't get back until June 26th & haven't even got everything I need let alone started packing so don't have any spare time for painting before then.

TOTAL POINTS PAINTED (INC THIS MONTH):
3,115 points

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll37/SuavelyDunn/DSC_2482.jpg

BACKGROUND/THEME:
Sort of a lord being turned and his loyal retainers have risen from the grave to serve him in all eternity.
Either that or he just leads a load of dead people...

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Straight out of the box (or blister in this case).

PAINTING:
I use the Wargames Foundry Paint System so my colours will be a little different to the GW names.

BASING:
Using a mixture of bases from Back-2-Base-IX (dirt) and Foundations of War (battle debris). Undercoated black, drybrushed with all three drab colours, with the stones picked out with all three granite colours. Varnished (dullcote) and static grass added. Drilled, Pinned, Glued & Magnetised!
Have used cotton wool on the ethereal models to try for that "ghostly" effect.

STILL TO DO:
Banner on the skellies & grave guard. Give some attention to the "statueness" of the wraiths & spirit host. "Bloody" the army up a bit - it looks too clean at the moment.

HIGHS:
Spirit Host was quite easy to paint (drybrush city) and am pleased with the Wight King standard.

LOWS:
Hated the corpse cart model. Have to admit I am a bit impatient when painting & I don't like models which take longer than a day to finish. That said, it's a bit of a swine to fit the corpse models to it after painting.

Magos Explorator's High Elves
8 months painting, 2 jokers: 1,600 points total

This month I painted my 10 White Lion axemen (~200 points):

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/andy_sayer/white_lions_1.jpg

And some closer shots:

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/andy_sayer/white_lions_2.jpg

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/andy_sayer/white_lions_3.jpg

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/andy_sayer/white_lions_4.jpg

The figures are the classic Marauder range, except for the command group, which are the current range. I'd like to pick up a couple of regular Axemen from the current range to help the unit blend together a little more. I added a banner one of the plastic sets as I didn't feel up to sculpting my own.

Painting is as previous, except I've gone for a couple of different tones on the hides of the animals. Some of the hides really don't look like lions to me, so I figure there are some bears, too!

I'm happy with how these guys have turned out. Although I'm a little worried as over the next two months I have to move house, and I still have my two largest units to do... eep! We'll see what I can manage.

I just recently found the Project log threads and I am completely impressed with all of you that are in the Tale of ________. I can't wait until the next Fantasy Tale starts. I've been wanting to start a new VC army and this gives me prime opportunity.

It looks like we're losing steam here, which makes me kinda sad.

Some comments, which I have unforgivably neglected for some time now:

@Harry: Once more a great job of turning some old, kinda boring minis into a fantastic looking unit. All those Warriors make for a truly imposing army shot.

@Harry, again: I really like the base, because of the big plant on the right, and the Skink hanging on to Stegadon is a great touch, very dynamic. Looks like your forgot the eyes of the Stegadon, though.

@Jimjim: I like the goblin and the stuff you added to the base. The highlights on the blue are too extreme for my taste, but maybe thatís because of the picture.

@Ego Ninja: Congrats on finishing the army, and a fine looking army it is.

@derv: A truly superb army. The Dreadlord and Shades are top notch, as usual.

@Dino: Itís a shame you drop out at this point. I admire your Chaos Dwarfs especially.

@Bluesabre: So much stuff, so much quality. Lovely witches.

@Niibl: Itís amazing how every single one of the minis in your army has so much character.

@Death Korp: Solid job on those Warriors. Hope your exams were successful.

@SuavelyDunn: Great looking Corpse Cart. I partly assembled one and put it back in the box right away because I was afraid to paint it. The banner top on your BSB is awesome. I wish I had thought of that.

@Knighta: Congrats on hitting the 2000 points mark. The pictures seem to be a little too bright to really appreciate your Warboss.

@Braad: Your scorpion has the most stunning blue eyes Iíve ever seen. [/DonnaLewis]

@Magos Explorator: I like the colour of the lion pelts a lot, works extremely well with the purple.

Regrettably I'm not making any progress with my zombies at all. I shouldn't have started working on my Marauder Giant.

OT: Do any of you happen to be versed in the ways of the 40K Witchhunters? I could need some help with putting together an army list with the Tale of 40K Painters in mind.

Losing steam?

Haha! Let's go steampunk then!
Not "tale of painters"-related, but I was just working on this steam-powered Ironback boar (soon with warboss) which is currently in production (mainly greenstuff and the orc left) and soon will lead hordes of orcs in battle.

Concerning your comment on my work: yes, blue eyes. Just the same as in real life. You get lost in those blue eyes, and then feel the sting...

@ Malorian
Thanks!

I'll try to produce some comments of my own tomorrow...

Time for some comments.

@ Harry (WoK): Never thought that WoC could look like a horde army without taking nothing but Marauders.... Very nice Chaos Knights, did the original models now have command models?

@ Harry (Lizardmen): Very nice. The foliage on the base helps bulk the model out to a similar size to the one with the Hero.

@ EmperorNorton (WE): There is just no pleasing you is there. You've got a newly finished 2000pt WE army that looks fantastic, and you complain that it is only barely tabletop standard :p (which it is well above of). Are you sure this isn't just echos of how much some of the models (like the dragon) were troublesome to paint? Nevertheless, congratulations on finishing an army.

@ Jimjim: Squigzilla is very cool. Where is the smaller squig from? the shaman in the BFSP box?

@ Ego Ninja: Excellent work, really shows why I love the new Marauder models (especially the heads). Congrats on finishing and I'm looking forward to seeing what you add.

@ derv: I hope you know that this may very well be my favourite DE army out there in the standard black/purple/silver scheme, and right up there for all of them combined. And you have to tell me how you painted the black capes on the shades! Congrats on finishing the army too (and I'll be looking forward to seeing more!)

@ Dino: Sad to see you go, but you've got two very impressive armies as they stand, and I'll be sure to check you log for future updates.

@ Bluesabre: Wow, is that really 3464pts? That's a massive amount (even with the eight (?) characters I can count in the pictures) to get done in on Tale and you are still going. Do you think you would hit 4000pts before the TOFP is over?

@ Niibl: Excellent Zombies. The gobbo pirate, pig tails girl and the checkered shirt zombie are my favourites.

@ Death Korp: I feel you pain, exams are the bane of my existence at the moment :(. Still three to go then I can finish last months work and start on this month :p. And you haven't failled yet! Your exams are nearly over so you can catch up with 1200pts in the remaining month and a half :p.

@ SuavelyDunn: Up until this month I thought you were leading this TOFP in both model count and points, but it now seems Bluesabre has you beat in the points department! What's the chance we will see you having painted the nearly 5000pts of your army list by the end of the TOFP?

@ Knighta: I think congratulations are in order for our resident horde player having finished two horde armies to 2000+pts in two TOFPs! Great work once again. Lork looks great.

@ Braad: Fantastic wolfriders and scorpion hero. And I owe you a thanks for solving my dilemma on how to make my last gobbo for my second wolf rider unit. How did you get a base so big for Grom? I've got the parts coming in for one of my own but I haven't got a big enough base for it.

@ Magos Explorator: Very nice. The purple goes really well with the cloaks on these models. How did you paint the cloak on the first model in the second picture (banner bearer)? That's what I'm looking for for my lions.

@ Braad (Again): Loving the Ironback Boar. Is it Rackham or Privateer Press? I can never remember which is which...

Well after tomorrow I've only got one exam left so I'll be able to start making some progress on last months work. After Thursday next week I'll have no exams left and I can really get stuck into finishing this army off.

Barack's Daemocratic War-party

Army: Warriors of Chaos (Tzeentch & Slaanesh)

Painted this month:

Warriors of Unrestraint @ 269 pts
12 Chaos Warriors
- Mark of Slaanesh
- Halberds & shields
- Full command
- War Banner

Total so far: 2189 (189 pts ahead of schedule)

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q438/tarjeiaasen/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/P6080294.jpg

And a decent army shot. Quite unusual for me!
http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q438/tarjeiaasen/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/P6080299.jpg

Background: It has again been a busy month for Barack, going to war again and doing quite badly (two wins, a draw and three losses didn't even put me into the top half of the tournament result table).
After one of the newly recruited Warriors ran out to fight in his underwear during a spurprise attack, he got a commendation from Robert, Defender of the Gates, with a side note that in the future it would be appreciated if the underwear was not pink, something the Slaaneshi Warriors found rather unreasonable.

Modeling: Standard models with the metal halberd set and a few bitz for the command guys. The standard is from the Horsemen set. The champion has a head from the HE Mage set and a mace from the Knight set. The musician has a head (with some green stuff to make the braid hang down beside his face) and a horn from the Horsemen set.

Painting: Armour is Dark Prussia Blue highlighted up to almost Dark Blue. everything else is pretty standard, though I mixed in a bit of light flesh in the hair of the unhelmeted guys to make it stand out from the fur collars.

Basing: As normal.

Highs this month: Being nominated for best painted army at the tournament. Finally getting a decent army shot.

And lows: Getting the blue to come out moderately okay in the pics.

Yet to do: When taking the pics, I discovered a couple of minor details I had forgotten, such as the pupils on the guys without helmets.

Next month: My second unit of Horsemen and possibly the Sorcerer I had planned to paint in april.

As a side note, I'm a bit later this month than I would have liked, but I have been busy. At least the other activity has also involved some painting. ;)'

So, here is my army shot.
Doing this was a good opportunity to sum up what I have painted up already:

Characters
Admiral Luthor Harkon.....260
Captain Redd Herring........82
Army standarbearer........155
free Hero slot..................0
497

Core
Deckhands Mob (32+B+M)...............207
Handgunners Mob I (10)...................70
Handgunners Mob II (10)..................70
Handgunners Mob III (10).................70
Pistoliers Mob (19+M).....................157
Bloated Corpses (4).......................120
Scurvy Dogs I (10+C)....................110
Scurvy Dogs II (10+C)...................110
914

Special
Carronade I.......................70
Carronade II......................70
Carronade III.....................70
free Special slot..................0
210

Rare
Qeen Bess...........................250
free Rare slot .........................0
250

=1871 points/128 miniatures

So, now I have to decide on what to do next: maybe a syreen, the missing 9 deckhands, a Leviathan...?

@ Harry (WoK): Great looking army. A good example of how well uniform models can look if you use enough of them.
Those armoured blocks really look more massive and threatening that way.

@ Harry (Lizardmen): flash on the stegadon's head:D
Really poisonous colours-I like it.

@ EmperorNorton (WE): Very good bases.
If you intend to actually play with these miniatures, the paint job is good enough.
High class shading can never be repaired properly and you will get hopping mad about any battle damage.
Thanks for reminding me of varnishing.
I haven't done so yet and I would get hopping mad...(does anyone really use this term?)
The treefolk looks somewhat dull next to the elves though.
The coats are too green in comparison.

@Niibl: It’s amazing how every single one of the minis in your army has so much character.
"It is a gift and a curse." It can be a lot of fun to select or build the models (sometimes even painting them), but it ruins any form of deadlining.
In the beginning I intended to build a cheap, quick and dirty army
(using my old plastics, only rough conversions, simple paintjobs etc.).
I failed.Again (but at least I quite finished the job, thanks to this thread).

@ Jimjim: Blue? No killertomatoe? A refreshing variant.

@ Ego Ninja: Good work.
A really nice looking army and a good opportunity to see the new models up close.

Ive still got loads of models I want to add to the army...
Don't we all :D

@ derv: Kudos to the master of black capes.

@ Dino: I'll have an eye on your work. Those two armies gave me lot's of inspiration for conversions of my own.
(and the urge to get look for my own Chaos Dwarfs as well)

@ Bluesabre: Well, you make me look bad with my less than 2000 points.
Such a high quality army is allowed to do this though.
You don't need much sleep, do you?

@ Death Korp:
Highs/Lows: Damn timing....
It is always "damn timing". Once exams are over the next will come up, or a job or a wife or kids but most likely everythig at once:D
Next month i will count the models:evilgrin:

@ SuavelyDunn: a very nice army.
I recommend inking the cart's flamethingy somewhat greenish.
The yellow does not fit the over all colour of your army.
The yellow is drowned out by the light brown and a colour with more contrast would pick this detail a little bit more out.

4,670 points...........and rising
Well, not really a surprise. Undead are rising all the time.

@ Knighta: Good work. i still don't know if I like your green ogres and giant but your brownies (night goblins) are something I intend to copy (one time in the future).

@ Braad: Too many orcs in this army for my taste but it is nice to see an assortment of wolf riders and chariots to get a feel on the look of those units.
Be assured of my envy as I once wanted to start with goblins too but ended with this only (please ignore the dust):
http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=61877&stc=1&d=1244647338
Maybe your army will make me start again. We will see...

@ Magos Explorator: Brilliant coice of colours, espeially for the metal.
For me purple is still reserved for DE but the paintjob is very good.

@ Braad (WIP): Ha! I knew those small jacks were worth keeping.
I hope you don't mind me snatching this idea?
You will have a stunning model. Thats for sure.

@ Avian: Again your monocolour block looks great, especially in unision with the yellow lads.
I would try out thinned black ink (on a test model).
It might improve the looks and give the armour a shiny surface (or use gloss varnish?)

Great knights, and impressive armyshot! The Dinosaurs are coming along great as well. Good to see you completely back up and running again!

@ Dino
Shame to see you go. But all the best in your life outside the tale. Maybe ‘till next time…

@ EmperorNorton
Aah, the first one to say his army is complete. Good to see you’ve come this far. Looking forward to your VC next month!

@ JimJim
O&G FTW! And blue squigs rule! Great job on that one.

@ Ego Ninja
Great models, and you did them justice. Simple but very effective paint scheme you got going there.

@ derv
Shades… Scary… Makes me think about this tournament (2250 pts) I visited a couple of weeks ago. There was a guy who had a single unit of shades with 4 characters and an assassin totaling up to 1500 points… crazy… Good to see you got a more respectable size going, and well painted indeed!

@Bluesabre
More DE’s! And naked ones this time! Always good. Great paintjob on those.

@ Niibl
Sweet. Nice dark and grim paintscheme.
Also good that you posted a points value. Now I just changed you from 3 jokers to just 1…

@ Death Korp
Dark and evil! They look excellent again!

@ SuavelyDunn
Pfew, that army is growing by the day… great stuff!

@ Knighta
Go green! Nice to see that games day model painted up.

@ Magos Explorator
Looking great again! I’m still fan of the dark HE scheme. Good to see something different.

@ Avian
I knew it the moment I saw those... Congrats! And good luck surviving the rest of your life...
Nice warriors, BTW...

And some comments on comments…

@ Doi
Yes, indeed privateer press. They got great models, though most are a bit difficult to integrate in Warhammer armies, as the style is quite different. But for this one that actually works out great.
My Grom’s base is 2x 50x50mm and 2x 25x50mm attached together with greenstuff and superglue…

@ Niibl
Yes, a bit more orcs then I intended… but I just simply don’t have more to paint. Though no worries, there’s only goblins coming from now on! 4 more spiders and 20 (maybe up to 30) gobbo’s on foot.
And steal anything you like. That’s the true orcish spirit!

You know, "Groom the paunch" and all that...
Hehehehe...

Yeah, they are meant to be played with and I agree that a better paint job would be kinda wasted on them. As nearsighted as I am everything with paint on looks the same once it's on the table anyway. It's just so much effort for a result of questionable quality.
I see what you mean about the trees. I guess I should add some foliage after all.

@ EmperorNorton
Aah, the first one to say his army is complete. Good to see youíve come this far. Looking forward to your VC next month!
It's not completely complete, as there's still a lot of stuff left that needs to be painted. Even more now that Harry sent me a left arm for my second Forest Dragon, which was missinig. (I haven't decided yet if that is incredibly awesome or incredibly cruel...)
I have 3000 points of painted Wood Elves now, though (picture of the whole army in my log), so I can focus on something else.
That something else should be my VC, but that's not going so well.

Feedback

@ Harry: Impressive how you have gotten so many guys together that quickly. I'd also consider painting some icons on the shields.

@ Harry (again): Sorry, it's a neat idea, but I think you have overdone the foliage on that model.

@ EmperorNorton: Remember that it is unsatisfied people who improve. As long as you can identify what you are not happy with and get some idea of how you can make that better, and you aren't about to give up on painting, I don't see anything wrong with being unhappy. I'm almost never happy with my models.

@ Jimjim: Nice squiggy. I'm surprised thebigsquig is so popular in the Tale and I'm feeling a slight urge to get one myself. Was it fun to paint?

@ Ego Ninja: Love the Horsemen. Congrats on having the army done. :)

@ derv: Very impressive army. Great job!

@ Bluesabre: Another very impressive DE army!

@ Niibl: Your hilarious conversions are one of the highlights of the Tale. :D

@ Death Korp: Well done on tagging along. I'm sure you will get a good-looking army out of it.

@ SuavelyDunn: Impressive army and with a very nice colour scheme. And that Empire banner does look a lot better in an Undead army.

@ Knighta: Anyone doing a greenskin army for that long deserves a special medal!

@ Braad: ...and a medal for the other greenskin player too! Looking forward to the end result.
And very cool basis for an Ironboar conversion.

@ Magos Explorator: I actually have a unit of those old White Lions too. Good to see a HE army that isn't white. I'd consider adding a couple of extra runes to the banner, though. It looks a little bit empty at the moment.

I think that maybe altering the head somehow would better the model somehow (instead of being, as far as I can tell, a really long jaw protruding from a small head). I think I might go down the greenstuff and superglue route for my own base. I've got a soare chariot one form a Lion Chariot somewhere...

@Harry (Khorne) - Wow. I wouldnít have thought that those old models would have looked so good. My favourite is the Cannon.

@Dino - Sorry to see you drop out, great work on the armies (I like the Chaos Dwarfs) and thank you for the final shots.

@Harry (Lizards) - Like the use of the dinosaurs! Good bright colour scheme really works. I think that the triceratops could use a few more models on it though - he looks a bit lonely.

@EmperorNorton - Donít be too harsh on the painting - it is better than a lot that I have seen. Well done on the painted army - it took me nearly 20 years of gaming to have one - and that was only last year!

@Jimjim - Booiinngg! I do like this model - not seen the squig blue before.

@Ego Ninja - Like the horsemen, a gritty look for them.

@derv - good clean painting on the shades & dreadlord. Thatís a big dark elf army you have now!

@Bluesabre - Another great dark elf army here. I know you said about not liking painting the flesh over so many models, but they do look good so well done on perservering! Ikea cabinet?

@Niibl - I really do like this army. Each of your models has real character and it has been a pleasure to watch it grow over the last year. Whatís next?

@Death Korp - Good job on the warriors. I donít believe that you have failed, as you have done nearly 900 points which is a good achievement. That fact that you are still here and others are not speaks volumes to me.

@Knighta - Nice work on the orcs - isnít there a little guy that stands in front of the gamesday figure?

@Braad - Good use of classic scorpion. Blue eyes are a bit unnerving! Like the steam boar!

@Magos Explorator - Like these models & to be honest I didnít notice the difference between old & new miniatures till you pointed it out.

@Avian - This must be the fastest catch up in history! Good paintjob & steady hand on the banner. Characterful army youíve got there - and a well thought out development log too. Am missing this monthís disc rider though...

Do note that it's actually a skull, and not a true head... so certain bits of mass are missing.

I realise its just a skull. It might just be that it looks so long because it is coming out of a small aperture in the armour. I don't have a big problem with it as it is, but I think shortening it would give it more of a boar proportion.

I think the stubbier look brings it more in line with the current GW boars as well.

I recommend inking the cart's flamethingy somewhat greenish.
The yellow does not fit the over all colour of your army.
The yellow is drowned out by the light brown and a colour with more contrast would pick this detail a little bit more out.
Good point & thanks for mentioning it. Just a straight GW wash or watering it down?
Try watering, at least for the first go.
You can always use more layers afterwards.
Shake them before using them.
I didn't, eager to slap the stuff on the miniatures and had to dillute it quickly with a wet brush as I had reached into the swampy depth of the inkpot.:o
Even if it is just ink, it will set a little bit in the pot and if you don't mix it up regularly you will get different results every time you use it.
(I have some experience now as I have used 2 pots of each, badab black and tharka green for this army)

Well, not really a surprise. Undead are rising all the time.
He he, couldn't resist the joke!
I thought so much...:D

Whatís next?
Good question.
I have started with five more deckhands, four of them being old pirate squats again and an old citadel Aardvaark.
Most likely I will put together four more to komplete the unit.
As I missed out that the Bess cannon uses a rare and a special slot I have to stick to the one rare choice left (i.e. a leviathan) or more core slots (no more units! which leaves bloated corpses only).

I think the stubbier look brings it more in line with the current GW boars as well.

Hmmm...
Yes, I see. I'll have a good look at the model, and consider the options...

First of all, apologies for not interacting in these threads much. I seem to either have no time, or have something else to do... Thanks to everyone for the comments regarding the DOW, it's been a blast, and a challenge trying to make radically different units work together as a cohesive force, but it's been well worth it.

On the whole, everyone else has been putting in sterling work, and there are going to be a lot of great armies coming out of it! To everyone who didn't manage to finish, better luck next time!

Month 10's Painting

Late again! Egad! Stupid nice weather being distracting...

Unit(s): Mercenary Captain with Lance, Shield, Heavy Armour and Barded Warhorse
Points: 74
Total Points: 1951+74 = 2025
Models/Conversions: Standard plastic General from the old Warhammer box
High Points: Glad to get to over 2k!
Low Points: Taking so long to get this guy done...
Still to do: Need to go back to the Knights and finish their standards... also need to come up with a name for this guy
What's Next? Got passed the 2K mark now, but I feel I 'cheated' by spending 2 months on Gotrek and Felix. I still haven't done a Lord choice yet, and want to add crossbowmen, so may do some of them too.

Your take on the Leviathan would be most interesting in my opinion. I'm working on a second one for this month, and I think it adds something truly unique to the army, as it goes beyond the "zombies with guns and cannons" theme. Give it a try!

So, how about this then?
I still had this Carnifex in my dungeon and patched togeter as many parts with snorkels as possible.
Please ignore that a real crab would have more legs but the carnifex box didn't have more clawthingies.
Maybe you have some Tyranid leftovers (in regard of your PM)?

Nice. :)

I can't help you regarding those specific (awesome) Nid claws - I used mine on a Daemon herald. But maybe there is something more juicy: I've bought a Tide of Spawn box some weeks ago - basically I have five sets worth of Chaos Spawns (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?categoryId=&aId=1100026). I especially recomend the crab claws, I find them to be a bit more weedy, but at the same time to look more like from a beast rather than an alien. Just have a look through the parts, free choice it is for you.

The problem with the converted carnifex is that almost everyone will see a converted carnifex... Though the idea is very cool and you've done a great job on the conversion, this won't do the model justice, as it might not fit completely in your army, style-wise, as too many players are familiar with tyranids and will keep seeing this...

ARMY: Tomb Kings of Khemri
TOTAL POINTS SO FAR: 1633
MODEL COUNT: 62

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: Tomb Guard (SPECIAL unit), Chariot (SPECIAL unit)

BACKGROUND/THEME: Nothing special yet. This is simply an army like it is pictured in the army book

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight out of the blister.

PAINTING: Primed white. For the rest, it is mainly the same colours as the rest of the army. The Tomb Guards have a darker gold than usual to emphasize on their veteran status.

BASING: Same procedure as the rest of the army.

STILL TO DO: The models are complete.

HIGHS AND LOWS: After the move into the new house (and quitting Warhammer Online for the time being) I finally found the time to get some modelling and painting done. Helped a lot on the motivation side. I even managed to complete the missing bases on my first entry.

POINTS: 148 (enough to get an eight month total)

Right you are but this was my first shot and it still lacks any kind of GS, bitz 'n bobs.
I am not sure on keeping the head myself but the rest I will most likely stay......until I find something completely different:D

The main problem is keeping the model on a 50x50 base.
The man o'war leviathan had been a whale which would be easy to copy by turning the Schleich model (http://www.schleich-s.de/en/action_figure/collectables/product_range/sea_animals/sperm_whale/index.html) (sperm whale?!:wtf:) into a bloated, floating corpse but IIRC that thing is about 30 cm long and quite heavy.
It would have to be balanced head down to fit the base and would look quite silly.
I also thought about the giant octopus from the same manufacturer but the model is quite flat, more like a fried egg.

I also thought about the giant octopus from the same manufacturer but the model is quite flat, more like a fried egg.

I actually have that model, bought for that exact purpose years ago. I decided against it after a while, because anatomically correct models just don't fit my idea of how Warhammer should look like - it would look like a converted model from something like a museum, not like a WHF monster. And getting it right would mean to more or less model it from scratch...

Hi guys first apologies (and hands over a note from my mum for poor attendance), after sitting in the corner and sulking over my poor attempt at the green knight i hit a wall and lost a little motivation then a new job the 2 bank holidays 1/2 term and sunny weather stole my " anorak time" , but am still in just and offer this months effort

Army : Brettonian rules Chaos army

This months painting: 8 x grail guardians = 304 points
(fay enchantress to come next month)

Background theme : Kaldours Knights, a character from the liber chaotica, an all cavalry army of traitors from the Empire Tilea and Brettonia who have sought favour in the realm of chaos. Painted as templars as a homage my commander in chief and also to try and tie all the different styles together

Build/ Conversion : more stuff from game zone was really tempted to take the lute from the musician and convert it into bagpipes but chickened out

Still to do : just got to add some lances

Highs and Lows : just 3 more horses to do yah hoo glad to be back in the saddle ( groans at the poor pun) but now am almost done as all models for this army have some paint on them and after my breather am determined to finish this army

Army so far: 5 grail knights =190 points
10 knights of the realm = 192 points
Paladin bsb = 74 points
5 knights errant =100 points
Paladin = 76 points
10 questing knights =280 points
Lord =140 points
6 knights of the realm =144 points
10 mounted yeomen =150 points
12 bowmen =72 points
8 grail guardians =304 points

apologies for the double post but heres some comments on the month so far

Harry (Khorne); wow would have apprehensive about using so much of one colour ( as with your nurgle as well ) but youíve shattered that myth with great bases and excellent painting and as your lizard army demonstrates awesome bases go a long way to making a fantastic army into an outstanding army

Emperor Norton; congrats on reaching 2000 points with a similar model as mine I am stunned as to how youíve painted your wood elves and managed to tie your army together and again fantastic bases

Jimjams; great work on the boss luv the way the helmet appears to falling off his head, just the way imagine anything to be riding a squig

Ego ninja; very menacing horsemen they look great as does the army as a whole and nicely tied together with blue and congrats on reaching 2000 points

Derv; hat off to you sir , another painter to reach the 2k milestone loads to admire in your army but for me itís the army shot that has shown how accomplished your painting is

Dino; shame two excellent armies are being ďstood down ď but good luck and hope they get finished some time

blue sabre; awesome witch elves, great work on the armour thatís an incredible points tally to have so well

Niibl; donít really have much to say just very jealous as to how character your army is the converting, bases and painting is , one of those armies I would love to see in the flesh ( another daft joke) and if I was the kind to buy a painted army that is one I would pay thru the nose for

Death korp; keep plugging away old boy it would be a shame to have your well painted army at half strength

Suavely dunn; another awesome army with an incredible points tally and loads of detail to admire each time I look at the pictures

Knighta; bags of character in skullsmasha as orcs should be, and great army

Braad; wow an army each time I look I find something else to admire , the extra work in the positioning of the wolves has really paid off seriously love to play against an army like that

Magos exploratory; probably one of my favourite entries for this month the y look great

Avian; always impressed with how crisp and neat your painting is and one of my favourite armies in the tale

Zark the damned; didnít think Leeds had nice weather! Great work on the yellow armour, really like how that came out and a really great character army painted very well

Rkunisch; your army has great feel to it really neat and crisply painted and the bone looks great

@Niibl - thank's for the detail on the painting, I will give it a try when I get round to tidying the bits up in the army.

I have looked at your conversion for a leviathan, and agree with Braad & Darnok - it looks like a Tyranid. The thoughts I had was something appearing out of the water (like The Lurker in Fellowship of The Ring) but that may seem a bit strange on your table (carrying its own personal pool with it...).

Did a search and what do you think to this giant isopod:

Yep, it is a deep sea creature. I just did a search for strange underwater creatures and that one looked the most like it could walk on land.

I have to admit I didn't pay much attention to Zombie Pirates when they were released, so don't know what a Leviathan is supposed to be. The Kraken miniature is a good find and would fit in with the army theme.

Is it a dead "thing" that has risen out of the sea with the pirates?

A reanimated/zombified creature of the sea, that's what a Leviathan is supposed to be. And there was never a model or even artwork on it, so you have maximal freedom - and not a single thing to start with in the entire GW range.

Well, the latter is not entirely true, I suppose a DE hydra might work as a starting point, as does a Chaos spawn (at least for my second one). But creativity is needed.

Time for some comments and replies I do believe.

Comments first:

Harry (WoK): That’s an impressive amount of red, great to see all this old stuff being painted. You must have quite a stash.

Harry (Lizards): Nice use of dinosaurs and plastic plants, all comes together nicely in a rather vibrant scheme.

EmperorNorton: Great looking army, I dont see anything to be disappointed with, and I'd certainly consider this army more than just barely table top standard.

Jimjim: Still loving that blue, guess this squig kinda glows in the dark. Would make them easier to catch.

Ego Ninja: Army looks good, well done on what you've achieved. Good luck with the rest of the stuff you want to add.

derv: Congrats on finishing your army, a great looking Dark Elf force. Look forward to seeing what more you have to add.

Dino: Great looking stuff Dino. Well done with all the converting.

Bluesabre: YAY ME AGAIN.

Niibl: Very cool undead pirates. Well done.

DeathKorp: Good work, could do with a coat of Dulcote or matt type varnish, bit too shiny for me.

SuavelyDunn: Love the ethereal effect on the spirit host’s, As a model the Corpse Cart just doesn’t do anything for me, maybe I’m not in tune with the undead enough. Great imposing army as well.

Knighta: Lork looks rather serious for an orc. Army’s looking good, though the multi coloured squigs seem a little odd amongst the rest of the horde.

Braad: That’s a nasty looking bug on the screen there, the Big Boss has gotta be careful not to annoy his ride too much with that stinger just behind his head. The army looks great as well.

Magos Explorator: Nice looking unit with the old sculpts, they seem to fit in well with the new stuff.

Avian: Nicely finished unit, blue looks like something I’d want to use on my historical mini’s considering the colour you used on it.

Zark the Dammed: Captain looks good, needs a name on his shield when you come up with it.

Rkunisch: Units look good, the highlighting on the red just doesn’t seem quite right to me though.

Nagged: Good looking unit, although personally I think the raw basing leaves a kind of unfinished feel.

Well that didn’t take as long as I thought.

Time now for some replies.

@ EmperorNorton: Thankfully there’s not much to go, though I don’t think I’ll get it all done before the end.

@Doi: Apparently it is, I had to calculate it several times just to be sure. 4000 points will easily be achieved with the piece I do for the last month of the challenge.

@Niibl: Not trying to make anyone look bad, my aim was to try and do my whole DE collection by the end of the challenge. Oh yes I need sleep, finishing work at 1am on a regular basis and having a 1yr old daughter make sure of this.

@Braad: Not quite naked, but close enough. So long as we don’t see naked goblins by Braad all will be well.

@Avian: Thanks muchly, I try.

@SuavelyDunn: Painting a large Catachan Army previously probably didn’t help. Yup Ikea cabinet, just not enough shelves, found a better one now, just have to save up for it.

@nagged: The armour was kind of rushed in the end, I thought I’d done better on some of the previous stuff. High points are easy when your characters aren’t cheap.

Thanks for all your comments, and well done to every one who's made it so far.

Keep up the great work.

And now you've got me waiting anxiously to see the AoW Chaos Lord on a Disc!

Hey people! Iíve finally come to my senses and painted the ass of these lizzies! Presented in this post is the pinnacle of four months work, and thatís just bad. I donít know how I managed to keep it up but here they are. The reason for me not posting in such a long time is because Iíve been abroad as an exchange student. I brought the stuff with me, but you know, when thereís so many new people to meet and places to see itís hard getting time or interest to sit by yourself painting minis. Well anywayÖ

Unit: 24 Spear Saurus with command, 3 Kroxigors

Points: (300/2=) 150 + 185

Painted: Standard Asurmen wash, the occasional green, red and gold and some dippiní.

Converted: The saurus unit is heavily converted, I dug out the bases and filled them up with water effects, cut the saurus in halves and made a real mess. The unit looks ok, but IMO it has been looking ***** until now. Iím pleased with the result though, but now I wish I hadnít done them that extreme, I think that made me lack motivation. I started on this project before the armybook was out, and rumors said there was going to be core tzunki saurus in there, I guess they were wrongÖ

Highs: Kroxigors, I painted them in less than ten hours, I absolutely love the models, great minis and fun to use some easy drybrushing and washes.

Lows: Not being motivated to paint the spearsaurus.

http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg6/leongreenekelin/lata.jpg

http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg6/leongreenekelin/lara.jpg

Whatís up next?
Ok, Iím finally going to try and give some kind of estimate on points here, mainly to figure out how much I get to play with in the end, but also since it is important for the tale of painters project.

30 Skinks with command (164)
18 Saurus with hand weapons and command (210)
24 Saurus with spears and command (300)
24 Saurus with spears and command
10 Skink skirmishers (70)
10 Skink skirmishers (70)
6 Swarms (270)
20 Temple Guard with command
3 Kroxigors (185)
1 Stegadon
3 Salamanders

Tehenhauin (250)
Chakax
Skink Priest (≈100)
Skink Priest (≈100)
Skink Priest
Skink Chief (≈100)
Skink Chief (≈100)
Skink Chief (≈100)
Skink Chief
Temple Guard Battle Standard
Oldblood on Carnosaur
Slann Mage Priest

That adds up to a total of 2030 BUT! Iím probably never going to use the Swarms, Tehenhauin and Skink Chiefs. Really Iíd like to exclude the Swarms and the characters from the list, and finally that goes down to something like 999! Not a bad number, the number of the beast inverted, great stuff. But thatís a bit short I understand. So what I need to do is to paint. No worries, with the characters I intend to use, I will actually present a final armylist of about 2250 pts with my final post here. How about that!
Ok, so whatís on the table?
24 Spearsaurus, they are assembled and blue at this point, Iím going to try to get them done by July. Then thereís either the Stegadon or the Salamanders, most likely the Sallies, since the Steg will be a centerpiece and I sort of want to pick on pieces of it at times. Then thereís the temple guard unit. Great models! Together with Chakax and maybe that awesome new standard bearer (Iím going to cut off his head, donít worry). On top of that is the Slann and an Oldblood on Carno so I can choose which way to go, test a few different styles.

Itís going to be one infantry unit then a monster, then infantry again. Itís hard getting all those single miniatures painted, so motivation is needed in between (I reward my painting with more painting, seems kind of sick).

Alright guys! Great painting this month, Iím going to try to get more into the conversation as time goes on, back on home turf itís a lot easier keeping track. Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy the models!

Very nice lizards there, Leonation. That's going to be one impressive army. Keep it up. :)

If I were to make one suggestion, it would be to paint the eyes of the lizzies in some contrasting colour, possibly yellow, to give a bit more definition to the head.

@ wiggles: There will probably be a Tale for next year as well. Whether it will work in the exact same way I don't know. I guess we'll come to some concesus in july (unless Harry vetoes us and sets the terms the way he likes them, that is ;)).

No painting from me this month, it's a 400 point effort for next time instead to keep my 'no jokers' run going.

Two things though:

1 - There are some amazing armies coming out of this log, congratulations to everyone who has made it this far, I feel like I'm fighting a war of attrition painting my elves at the minute, but seeing all you guys churning out the goods is giving me reason to continue!

2 - A huge thanks to the stars who take the (quite considerable) time out of their days to write comments for literally everyone who posts on these pages. Awesome effort guys, means a lot to me when I read your efforts.

Until next time, I have a dragonmage to complete . . .

Right, update for Month 10!

Pics for now, more info to follow when I get around to editing it. Overall takes me to 1600 (it's an expensive BSB!). Do we start putting WIP pics into this thread?

OK folks, I'm back from my holiday & find myself in the position of having to buy back into the Tale again (big time in fact!). But first, here's some comments:

@ Harry - excellent knights, that army is looking very good, especially after your dramatic recovery! cool looking stagadon too, i love the skinks clambering over it

@ Dino - nnnooooo, just bash some models together, even if it's just characters don't drop out at this late stage. thanks for the army shots but PLEASE don't let it be the end!

@ EmporerNorton - that's a decent amount of elves painted & done to a very nice standard too

@ jimjim - very nice 'squigzilla'!

@ ego ninja - very good marauders, can't believe that army is so many points for so few models!

@ derv - awesome stuff again & that army now looks hugely impressive, it's really putting my army to shame & i need to pull my finger out! congratulations on reaching the 2000 point target

@ bluesabre - awesome stuff & a very impressive points total

@ Niibl - beautiful stuff again, looking forward to seeing the army shot with the trays, how are you painting these guys again? yep, that army shot is awesome! I also love that Carnifex/Crab/Monster thing! Looking forward to seeing it painted

@ death korp - well done on keeping up with stuff & nice stuff again

@ suavellydunn - that army is so big & all of it is painted so nicely, congratulations

@ knight - 6 models, SIX?!?! Once again I'm disappointed!! Congratulations on making the points total though & in particular well done on painting two horde armies in consecutive tales

@ Braad - cool looking stuff again & looking forward to seeing what you come up with in the end

@ Magos Explorator - cool mini's, very nicely painted with a very good scheme too

@ Fechik - looking forward to having you next time round

@ Avian - excellent warriors & yes indeed that is decent army shot!

@ Zark - well done on getting to the points total & nice stuff again

@ rkunisch - excellent stuff, army shot it looking very nice

@ nagged - sorry to hear about the loss of motivation but well done on getting that stuff painted, especially as they're so nice!

@ Leonathian - beautiful stuff once again & that army looks awesome, can we have some more detailed info on how you paint/dip them please?

As for my own stuff, I'm currently only on 1253 & when we post in July we should be posting a minimum of 1800 points so I got some serious cathcing up to do! However, I do plan to catch up & then leave myself with just 200 points in the last month (probably 2 units of Dark Riders so I'll need to be buying a WE batallion!). My plans are to paint 10 Corsairs (150 points as it includes the command group), 10 more crossbowmen (105 points), 5 Cold One Knights (already started, 175 points) and finally the AoW sorceress who will have the Tomb of Furion (150 points). That's a grand total of 280 points which will bring my total just over 1800. I might post it two lots but definately want to have a good amount of it done by 7th July.

Not sure what I'm doing for the next Tale yet either, I'm now thinking that rather than the D&D inspired OK & might go for some more DE's so I can paint some of the cooler stuff like Witch Elves/ Executioners. Still plan on doing a boys army of only 1000 points though!

@Jonahmaul
Thanks for the reply.
Seems like you hit post 30 (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3662646&postcount=30) after typing the first sentence.:D
The bases are just plaster+woodglue, flocked with Lin- and sesam seeds, primed black with a rough drybrush of shadow grey and a second one of wolf grey (the light, slightly blueish grey).
Badab black and Tharka green on top...finished.
The zombies are also based on shadow grey, so it fits quite well.
(shadow grey and rotting flesh: The perfect combination for unnatural skin. I painted all my chaos dwarfs this way.
The zombie have Badab black added though.)

I think I will not finishg the fex atm.
I also had one of those new DE hydras which is in the works now.
I put it more upright on a 50x50 base and had to balance the model properly as it became too top heavy.
To stay in character: I used a lot of fishing lead.;)
It still lacks some GS work and the Captain Ahobbit entangled with some harpoons on it's back.

Well, good news and bad news. The good news is I asked my girlfriend to marry me and she said yes, the bad news is with all the wedding planning I won't be able to finish the tale this year. I'll see you all in the next tale with my Tomb Kings!

Congratulations Zujara :). I'm sure we can let you leave with that excuse ;).

@ Leonathion: Very nice. The Kroxigors are fantastic. How did you paint the gold? Definitely need to steal that recipe.

@ Prince Sairion: Hurry up with that Dragonmage! I want pictures :p

@ sparks: Nice job. I think it would benefit from a slightly lighter colour on the banner trim though. At present it seems to all blend together, but making it too light wouldn't fit with the subdued colour scheme you've got going though.

@ Jonahmaul: About time you got back from your holiday you lucky bugger :p. Though I'm a bit confused as to how you only get 280pts from those units which cost nearly 600pts

Been making some headway on my warboss conversion. Why oh why did I decide to convert metal models :(. Plastic is so much easier...

@Zujara- congrats! Thats an excellent excuse! And as you said there is always the next Tale.
@Doi- just think of the end result to help get you through the pain fo metal model conversion.
@Sparks- those dwarfs look excellent- I'm sure they'll look splendid when they are finished.

I'm having a bit of a 'mare painting wise- the vamp lord is resisting my attempts to get her painted. I have built up a corpse cart rather badly and some ghouls are assembled. Not a good month modeling wise [although I may have painted some nids..]. Hopefully I will rectify things soon and get the vamp finished- may have to double post next month to stay in..

@ Zujara - bloody women, they always eat into your hobby time!!! Just joking dude, congratulations big time. Although with only 1/2 months left wouldn't it be easy to finish this years one as I would've thought you'd still be doing a lot of wedding planning well into the next Tale (not that I've ever planned a wedding but from other people I know it's a fairly lengthy process!).

@ Doi - that's a type, should say 580! Unfortunately I meant to get a lot of miniatures made in work last night which didn't happen but I'll hopefully get them done today.

@ Everyone - I have another Plea. Has anybody got 5 of the hooded WE archer heads please? I've decided not to do another hero in the army as there was too many points in characters so want to do another unit of Dark Riders but really need these heads for them. If anybody has them spare or can sell/trade them with me I'd be extremely grateful.

@Doi- just think of the end result to help get you through the pain fo metal model conversion.

I'm trying :p. The mount is now entirely assembled, just got gaps to fill and to attack the rider now. Got to the point that I couldn't do any more because I was waiting for greenstuff to dry, so I greenstuffed the remaining two lions and converted 8 legs to fit on the 5 that are currently riderless. This is for you Jonah and Nephilim of Sin :D.

Sounds like you're having as many problems as I am lately, and I'm definitely double posting next month to stay in :p.

My July entry for my Ogres. Introducing "BloodToof GrumbleBelly" Tyrant of the
"Bloody Teef" tribe. Once a Maneater of much renown across the Empire he
returned home to both take control of his tribe and eat his father, its a family
tradition that makes many Bulls set off to be Maneaters or face being eaten by their sons. I use the Thundermace weapon a lot and love it.

Next month (in a couple of days) you should get a finished family photo of
the whole army, just have to knock out some Maneaters to finish it off.

Hi everybody, good and bad news from me too - even if it doesn't include marriage or a baby. I had a bit too much real live these days, and I'm sorry to say that I have to officially quit this Tale. I won't make it this month - again - and have no interest whatsoever in having taken four jokers. Therefor I'll cut it at this point.

Now for the inofficial part... ;)

I'll keep on painting. I feel like I'm almost done, and I will have time again at the end of July. Plus the army needs to be done before the 14. of August. So I'm looking forward to a finished army nonetheless - but on my own terms. I really think deadlines aren't made for me... :o

Unfortunately, my part in this Tale must come to and end as well. With my impending nuptials scant weeks away, the time not spent at work has become dedicated to organising flowers and such :cries:

But it is not all bad news. They may not be painted, but I have accrued and assembled the final parts of my Empire army. Thanks to the Tale, for the first time since starting the hobby I have a complete 2,000 points and an armylist to go with it! :D In fact, I already have additional troops over the original 2,000pts, and designs to continue the army further with more provinces being represented.

Thanks to everyone for their support and comments during the year. I will still be looking in on this Tale to see those who reach the finish line.

Hmm, well, in Dutch we have a saying "the last leads are heaviest" (literal translation), so I guess this proves it right, with these last month's weighing in heavy on some (me too), even though others are already finished.

Well, I'm not competely out. As I said, I will keep on painting. Some explaining might help...

I've got some uni business to do at the moment, which is really more important than doing model stuff, and this plus work and a girl (not in order of importance ;)) makes it virtually impossible to get my remaining entries done to the level I want them to be, in the time frame I have.

What is left for my army? The vampire commander, the second Leviathan, ane Big Bess with crew and some zombies with guns - that's only a few models, but some of them are big, and they come in at a hefty 800 points!

Apart from maybe those gunners, they all need time and effort, and definetely more love than just three colours on them. I think it would be unfair towards people dropping out earlier through the Tale to just slap some colours on those models and call it done.

I want to do them justice, and I can't do that before the end of July. Plus I don't want to promise anything I can't hold afterwards - maybe I won't have the time even then! So it is dropping out now, with the prospect of getting it done without deadlines towards the end. A group shot will come, just not now.

I would just like to say, without any coercion or beatings, or insertion of BFSP goblins into painful areas, that I would fully endorse anyone to stay in the tail of painters as it is a great and wonderful experience where at no point does anyone get coerced, beat or have BFSP goblins inserted into painful areas, and that Doi and Stu are in no way standing behind me as I read this ready to beat me around the head with a Chaos Marine dreadnought.

Doh, that sucks!! Well done Reik for staying, I hope some of you other guys can manage to get some stuff done to stay in (says me who is still very much out of it at the moment!). I have decided that I'm not going to do a TOFP army next time round so I can concentrate on my marines. I want to do a really good job of them with each miniature being done to a high standard & I've found it quite stressful painting armies for both tales this time round (especially when I was painting 3).

@ Doi - on that note I think I've changed my mind on bases again after our very long conversation about them! Don't worry I'm still going for the snow bases but don't think I'm going to use Dark Art bases now, just going to use the normal GW ones as it seems a shame to buy those resin ones then cover most of the detail in snow.

There isn't going to be a gap month in between Tales this time around?

As for me, if I join the next TOFP it will be Ogre Kingdoms in the 'boys league'. I've built up a multitude of side projects and sidelined two major ones over the past two years in the TOFP (and I don't regret it one bit) as this has taken up the majority of my time and I wouldn't mind switching off of a one project mindset for a while to be able to do bits of everything. Regardless, I'll still be hanging around the TOFP threads as I like it too much here :p.

So it seems its a rather pathetic update from me this month considering I had originally boasted painting a mighty 600 points. Alas, I have not done so and I will have to be satisfied with this measly 225 points. I still plan to buy back my two jokers this month or the next so that I can with a 'perfect' record.

On the other hand, if we are talking sign ups for the next tale, I will be doing so with my Bretonnians. Looking forward to painting them up, especially after reading Anthony Reynolds Knight Errant and Knight of the Realm both of which I highly reccommend, even if you arent particularly fond of Bretonnia.

Anyway...

High Elves

This Months Painting

Models: 10 White Lions with a Full Command and 5 Phoenix Guard - Valour's Heart and The Wardens of Fire.

Background:Valour's Heart are a unit of veterans drawn almost entirely from Chrace. They were sworn to the house of Oaksong, one of Yvresse's oldest lines, during the Great War Against Chaos. After the last of that family fell in battle against the Dark Elves the unit was left lordless. They looked to their veteran captain, Arhalien, and he led them through the great darkness of that time, teaching much to his loyal second Baralei. After the war and the terrible death of Arhalien at the hands of Urian Poisonblade, the unit swore themselves to Baralei who was now a Prince of Ulthuan after inheriting the house of Oaksong's ancestral spear.

They still serve the Prince today with unerring loyalty and have many a time fought to the last against a myriad of fearsome foes so that their charge may survive. Baralei feels a great sense of kinship with these warriors - elves he has fought with, drank and bled with for over 200 years. As such, he is often found leading them himself where the fighting is fiercest.

---

The monks of Asuryan some of the most mysterious groups in all of Ulthuan. Sworn to a silence they may never break, given the knowledge of their ultimate demise and enlightened as to the future of the Phoenix Throne, these individuals are even rumored to be able to return from the dead.

Prince Silverspear has never been a devout follower of the gods and goddesses of Ulthuan, placing his faith in the strength of his spear and the courage of his soldiers rather than dieties. However, it seems that the Phoenix Guard take an interest in the life of this commoner-turned-prince. Arriving to aid him in battles seemingly at random and occassionally even led by the Captain Caradryan himself. Since witnessing the mystic power these monks have on the battlefield, the Prince has become intruiged by what they percieve in the Prince - what is it that they deem worthy of this solitary elf?

Now, it is common for Baralei to approach the shrines of Asuryan, requesting the aid of the Phoenix Guard. Since direct communication is impossible, the aid of these warriors must be made through highly ritualized ceremonies. It is through this process that Baralei finds himself questioning his role in the eyes of the gods. Could he truly be a hope for the Asur?

On this, the Phoenix Guard remain silent...

Points: 225

Building/Conversion:Nothing special here, though I do have plans to convert the white lion banner into something more interesting.

Painting:The Phoenix Guard were done in the same manner I did the last 15 with. The White Lions took a little bit more time although I surprisingly enjoyed painting these guys. The cloaks were done with Dheneb Stone foundation, then a layer of Devlan Mud wash and finally a drybrush of Skull White. Very simple but I think it gets the job done fine.

Basing:Standard method I've used for the whole army.

Highs and Lows: I had fun painting the White Lions but I had hoped to get the whole unit done. I was agonizing over the choice of painting the White Lion's plumes red or white but I finally went with white. I think it worked out very well in the end, they stand out alot more plus they look very cool when the silver haired Baralei is in the unit.

Still to do: Just gotta convert the banner and these guys are finished.

Total Points Thus Far:1735

Next Month: The last 10 White Lions and either 10 archers or 2 Tiranoc Chariots.

Note: I couldnt get a good photo of the Phoenix Guard for the life of me so I didnt bother posting it.

@ Doi - nope, don't think so, just doing to for 'plain' old snow bases. I do like those rocky bases but seems a bit of a waste to buy them & then obscure most of the details with snow (I was going to go for quite a heavy covering). I don't think there's going to be any gap between TOFP to TO40KP otherwise it's going to keep getting later in the year!

@ Alathir - i second Doi, with all the drop-outs & people having to post massive totals this month to get themselves on track you've done well to get anything posted. And white plumes was the right choice

I don't think I'm going to be in TOFP at all next year. As I said before I want to concentrate on my marines & I also go back to uni to start a post-graduate course on September which is going to be quite intensive. However, I will still be hanging around to look at people's stuff (especially after the first couple of months of drop-out's when the threads become far more manageable!)

Haha thanks for the comments guys, glad to see I went with the right decision.

Now, just gotta get my stuff finished for next month!

And also, a big badge of awesomeness who posted this month. I havent been able to comment sadly but to everyone who has stuck around I can really say it has been worth it. All the armies are looking amazing.

@ Doi - nope, don't think so, just doing to for 'plain' old snow bases. I do like those rocky bases but seems a bit of a waste to buy them & then obscure most of the details with snow (I was going to go for quite a heavy covering).

Have you considered making the rocky bases yourself? Breaking up some slate or cork?

If your going to go with just plain snow (similar to mine) you might want to do those sprue spacers I mentioned. If that's the case drop me another PM and I can go through it.

Apologies again for not commenting much, I never seem to have the time to pop onto the forums and have a proper read through of these threads...

Sorry to hear so many are dropping out. In order to compensate, I intend to continue and get another 500 points by the end of the tale proper! (i.e. 2500 in 12 months instead of 2000 in 10).

Already have a good wodge of this done with my new Lord (pics to come) but need to get on with my Xbows

I'm not part of the tale but I painted 20 grave guard and a vampire during June and I will post pictures up in the next thread (month 11).

Just clearing some stuff out so I'll be ready to do my dwarfs in a couple of months :D

New thread is up chaps.

On dropping out :

If you reach for the stars and fall short you might still make it to the moon.
It is better to tried and failed than never tried at all.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Ask yourself one question.

Have you got more painted now than you had ten months ago.

Ask yourself another.

Have you got more painted than you would have if you had never signed up to this.

Ask yourself one more.

Have you met a great bunch and enjoyed being part of this?

There are no losers here. Just a bunch of guys with a load of beautifully painted minis.

The new thread to sign up for next year is up.
I'll see you there.

As always,
All the best,
Harry

I prefer 'I will touch the sun or I will die trying' but I still agree with Harry's comments. The people who've dropped out in the last couple of days you've been excellent throughout the Tale, posting great models & being a part of the 'wheat' that made it through the first couple of months. I hope you can all make it back for next years TOFP where I will be hanging around even though I won't be joining in.

Master mass painter and a poet? Is there anything you can't do Harry? :p

I think I'll be posting twice in the new thread, once for my catch-up entry (though still not based ) and my on-time entry (still not even undercoated ).

I really need to pull my finger out! I thought I'd get loads of painting done as I was on nights over the weekend & have had a few days but I've got precisely nothing done (although I have made 10 crossbowmen & 10 corsairs).

I shall have at the very least half of the 400pts I need to post up on Sunday (wont get decent daylight tomorrow or Saturday). Maybe all 400pts if I can get my general finished by then.

And I've made a start on my lion riders too, not going to be still assembling in the last week of the month this time!

Anyway, I'll have the new stats up and running soon.

Alright, finally made it.

TOMB KINGS

POINTS THIS MONTH: 280

POINTS TOTAL: 2110

THIS MONTH'S PAINTING;

2 tomb scorpions and a screaming skull catapult

BACKGROUND; In death the power of Thumu-Ra eclipses any he could have hoped for in life. Though withered in form, his body writhes with resplendant energy gifted by his patron. Wounds that would fell a lesser creatures are but nothing to this god amongst mortals. Pleased with his patronage and continuing rituals to appease the gods, Ptra has gifted the king with hulking constructs which he wrested from the god of the underworld.
It was no small feat for Ptra to claim these guardians though and it is only during times of great strife that he will grant the king control of the insectoid monsters, some of his most prized trophies.

Now as the Sun King stakes his claim over the sands of the north he brings with him the animated Screaming Skull Catapults. Dread war engines crafted under intruction of the gods themselves, the king rains down fiery death upon his rivals. None can escape his fury, for not even the strongest fortifications offer any protection from the supernatural screaming of lost allies. It is said that any who gain the ire of the king enough for him to use this most infernal device will suffer the most unbareable death, with their souls becoming forfeit to his casket, their hands a prize for his generals, and their skulls ammunition for the next mortal fool.

BUILDING/CONVERSION; No conversions this month, i just jazzed up the bases a bit by using the citadel ruins kit (i have plans to make some unit fillers with the remaining columns seeing as you get so many extras).

PAINTING/BASING; This month i changed my gold painting technique slightly to give it more of a shine. Seeing as the tomb scorpions are underground i don't think they'd suffer the affects of ageing so much as their contemporaries, so i used this method;

tin bitz base coat, dwarf bronze heavy drybrush, shining gold drybrush, shining gold/mithril silver light drybrush, and finally a wash of gryphonne sepia mixed with a small portion of red ink (the closest substitute for chestnut ink I've found so far).

HIGHS; With these models finished i can now field my standard 2250 army with all fully painted models. AWESOME
LOWS; The screaming skull catapult is the flimsiest model in the universe. As i mentioned earlier i just finished painting it when it got a bit loose in one of the joints. I gently pried it oped to dab in some super glue but within the blink of an eye it broke into no less than 7 pieces. I nearly cried.

STILL TO DO; Nothing for these guys, finito.

Very nice. But did you run out of square bases? :p

I can see the catapult being a rather fiddly model, and I had enough problems with the previous edition hydra model and that looked like a stable model.

Now you just need to Desertify those movement trays and the army is complete.

I did run out of square bases! It's true :p

Funny you mention it, my mates just got me the new hydra for my birthday so here's hoping it isn't as bad.

And yeah those movement trays stick out like sore thumbs, i'll tinker with them for the next update.

See y'all in month 11...oh no it's here already!?!?! Time to get cracking

Yeah, the Catapult is supposedly one of the more 'orrible things to put together of all the things GW makes. Applause for getting it done and for going with metal for the beasts holding the thing up. I don't think I've seen that done before, but it's really effective and I think it suits the model much more than bone, which is the common colour for them. :)

I'd probably put it on a base, though, to make it more robust.

And the army is luvverly.

I've assembled the new Hydra model too, and compared to the old model it was a dream to assemble.
