After a few years in this hobby my slapdash painting methods and my ability to accrue more figures then i can pain has inevitably caught up with me.

I originally started playing CSM and went with a khorne themed army. Well as my play style has evolved and my borderline O.C.D. dictates i decided to overhaul my army and give it a new paintjob.

Also included are my father's Necrons that he doesn't want to paint so i got saddled with it, and a very similar Tyranid army my fiance may someday.hopefully, maybe, perhaps actually play. Finally as the urges takes my included are a few random scratch builds and side projects.

Your models look good. Necrons look very good. Painting is clean on the iron warriors, but have you considered painting a wash of badab black over the metal areas. I think that might help as at the moment they almost look to bright metallic wise.

ill give it a try, will see how it turns out, generally speaking i prefer clean models but that amount of boltgun/mithril is quite alot on a model and does need to be toned down

apart from the pics hurting my eyes due to brightness, I really like them, I love the metal look, but as suggested a wash would add some nice shade.

i find the whiteboard does a good job of absorbing the flash-if you have any suggestions to make the pics look just as good with less white im all ears, i just point and click when it comes to cameras

that defiler thing is a kitbash brass scorpion, its currently under the knife for some remodeling and posing but i think i may have a few pictures around somewhere of the painting ive done on it...

i have recently accrued more armor plates so i can do up 6 of the 8 legs covered in plating i think, im working on this on the side as i work on actually making a table-worthy army, among all the other projects i have going on.

no updates today, been really busy with work lately and a marriage to plan. am also lacking in ideas, i want to make these marines look a lot like the fluff but i need ideas in how to give them a bit of flavor and variety. i think in the meantime ill work on the brass scorpion a bit, while i think of how to make the marines look a bit more unique. as always C&C welcome

tht is the best brass scorpion i've ever seen!!!!!!

thank you very much it was my first kit bash and I'm happy with he way it turned out. with the new color scheme i have its hybrid tone is turning out nicely, I'm also fiddling around with bulking the tail up a bit more so it doesn't look so fragile.

Finally i can't decide buzz saw blades or claws? or one of each if it looks good?

adorian
28-06-2009, 04:58
due to some demand in private circles i present a VERY WIP brass scorpion, currently I'm up in the air about my old tail and if i want to bulk it up or not. as for the crossbar that is currently there for support and posing atm. I have quite a few moere armor plates that will go over the majority of the legs to give it an armored scorpion look but not nearly as segmented as the FW one. also i think I'm going to go with one blade and one claw, i think it gives it a very chaos-y and unbalanced daemon engine feel ( my wife doesn't like it though she thinks either claws or blades but not one of each) C&C welcome

Great work with the brass scorpion. I like to look of the claw and the blade and I don't feel like throwing my guardsmen against it when I head down. Also, on the bulkier tail I agree it looks a little thin and weak right now almost like a few stray shots from a flashlight might break it. Also, thanks for the pictures.

well seeing as how i slipped with my knife today and cut a gash in my hand (5 stiches) i've been banned from a knife for a while. I suppose this is a good excuse to continue the painting.

adorian
06-07-2009, 03:19
well im still plugging away in the little free time i have, this is still a PIP but it's changed a lot since i originally started it. i have magnetized the tail and finished a majority of the armor plating on the beast. Sadly my hand still has stitches in it making it a pain to move my left hand in certain directions, so I'm very much still restricted to painting.

its really coming along now, the tail looks much stronger and realistic then it did originally, I'm plugging away at the painting, a lot of surface area and defilers models have a lot of detail to work on. i still like the look of the one blade and claw, i cant decide to give it a dioramic base or not.

The story behind this is that its one of the first brass scorpions that was produced/spawned and being the ingenious savvy warriors that they are, the iron warriors quickly chained this monstrosity and are trying to get more to support their super heavy's company and their titan legion. Thus the combination of Khorne/IW paint scheme

as always C&C welcome and appreciated

I really like the armor on the tail section and the conversion itself is excellent.

but I'm really not sold on the striped saw.

You're stuff if nice bro. Very clean...maybe a little too clean. The only suggestion I would make is to dirty them up a bit. I like to give it a 70:30 black ink/brown ink wash or several thinned down. It is still very silvery, but gives it the dirt and grim of 10,000 years kinda look.
Otherwise awesome stuff. Love the brass scorpion.

are you referring to the infantry or the scorpion? the scorpion's painting is not even closed to finished painting yet and will be getting a nice bath when it is.

but I'm really not sold on the striped saw.

the saw is going to get liberal applications of red gore, mud and ichor in general ,in the near future to break up the hazard stripes. i always found the IW use of hazard strips to be purposefully redundant. guns hurt, pointy bitz poke, and the like. so i overdid it in hopes that the gore will stick with the grim irony

Just in general, though I like my marines to be nice and dirty as if they been stuck in for a while

they aren't nearly as bright as the picture makes them out to be, and the scorpion will get a liberal application of badab black before it gets a sealed.
I havent decided yet if they will get battle damage or weathering, but i appreciate the criticism it gives me something to think on. i know the chaos doesnt have to look ancient and old the books are a good reference for that, but they do need to FEEL ancient so i need to maybe give them another wash at least and take some daylight photos.

ok after washing it again with both red and black applying some bullet scars and messing with photo settings i think the quality and relevant age of the miniature has increased.

i picked up some static grass, only thing i need now is a pin vise so i can drill barrels. Also do to popular demand i did some more washes/weathering to the army in general tell me what you think.

did a bit of battle damage and gore effects as well. though the gore is hard to see due to it being on only a couple figures.

You're certainly put in a lot of effort! One thing I would say - your metal looks a bit flat, maybe wash and highlight it?

i could do some highlighting (first army so i'm still messing with how to paint well) though everything has been washed many times, the marines have 2 washes of badab black and one wash of baal red.

i don't think the camera is picking it up to well
ill try and get better pictures in future shots.

thanx for the comment.
