A big Hello to everyone. After 10 years absence from painting/gaming, my fiancee told me to go find a hobby I could do in front of the TV to stop fiddling. So here I am... sucked back again :)

The first figure I picked up was the Chaos Terminator Lord as he appealed to my love of converting, with all his options. As you can see, I'm still trying to remember how to paint smoothly... Click on any of the images to see larger versions

One of the armies that always interested me in the 40K universe was the Imperial Guard. Unfortunately I donít really like either of the plastic kits, so I decided to have a go at butchering a few different sets together to provide some basic troops and some Storm Troopers for a bit of fun.

The chosen kits were the basic Cadian troops to get the essential Imperial Guard bits, some Space Marine Scouts to add a bit of bulk to the Cadian structure and some different heads from Pig Iron to stop anything looking too much like the original kits.

The Pig Iron order went nice and smoothly, arriving in good order, very quickly. On arrival though it was clear that the heads I'd chosen were rather smaller than the GW equivalent; especially the Kolony Inner Guard heads. Still. They are nice, so I decided to go ahead and try anyway.

The visored helmet (used in the first unit below) works on the Cadian body without too much work, all that needs doing are some high, padded collars adding onto the body to level off the heads. They are still very narrow compared to the standard GW heads, but itís not too noticeable once they are painted up. The Inner Guard (domed) heads are far too small for the Cadian body, it just looks silly. We'll come back to these later.

I see these two coming form some sort of mining planet where sealed clothing and close range firepower are a necessity. This first one is a pretty simple combination of Marine scout legs, Cadian body and arms with the Pig Iron heads. I've added knee and elbow pads onto them in addition to the previously mentioned collars. Youíll also notice that they have cut down/modified lasguns. It seemed to fit the aesthetics of their new, bulkier appearance. If I ever get around to doing a full Guard force, this is certainly going to look nice on the battlefield. Paint wise, these are done in tabletop quality schemes rather than display. Something I've never done before... probably why I always hated doing large units as I always wanted them to be display quality ;)

For the Storm Troopers I had to do a little bit more work to get it looking right. As I mentioned, the domed heads that I ordered were far too small for the Cadian bodies. Thankfully, with a little bit of work, the scout bodies make nice carapace armour for these new Guard and look quite nice with the domed heads. First I carefully removed the eagle, giving it a smooth front to the armour. Next up I had to raise the front of the Scout bodies and build a new respirator block on the front. This leveled off the top of the armour so that it looks like the Inner Guard head only comes down to nose(ish) level. Iím not quite finished with these yet, but hereís a WIP shot of the comms officer.

Apart from having to finish off the Storm Troopers, I've got a number of other Guard experiments on the painting table; I'll go into these over the weekend. There's also a SECRET project for a friend's birthday, so that will be added here at the start of July.

Thanks! That was my first attempt at NMM, so I'm quite pleased with it. Still a long way to go before it looks right though :)

Well. I mentioned that I had a secret project on the go for a friend's birthday. I gave it to him yesterday, so I can finally post it up for your viewing/commenting pleasure.

He runs an Ork force called "Da' Ork Angels"; comprised of a deranged group of Orks that think they are Dark Angels.

So what better than kit-bashing a bunch of Nobz with bits from the Dark Angel Veterans kit? The bases were left so he could match the rest of his force.

These two are the best closeups
