Hello!

Edit:18/8-2012: I have started a new Skaven army, it's progress starts on page 4 of this blog. I also have a Mordheim Witch Hunters Warband that is practically finished on page 9 as well.

----
I thought i would share my Skaven army with you guys so im starting a new thread dedicated only to skaven instead of hijacking my own old threads.

I will start with a little little army background.
The clan is comprised of members from all the major clans, including Moulder, Skryre, Eshin and Pestilence. The clan has found a big warpstone vein that they mine and guard furiously to pay for the major clans services. The black Skaven Bruck is the clan warlord and official leader.

Heres my Banner of Burning Hatred. this is my first serious attempt at freehand! im pretty pleased. ^^ i think the eyes look like they explode with hatred as well as the expression of the rat on the banner. im also really happy about the warpstone on the top of the banner. its done with Dark angels green as basecoat, hightlighted with Dark Angels green Mixed with Scorpion Green about 3:1 first time then i just added more Scorpion Green to the mix until it was only Scorpion Green, i mixed it quite drastically, like 3:1, 2:1, 1:1, parts Dark angels Green and scorpion Green. then i did scorpion green Skull White 2:1, 1:1 at the very edges. then i gave it all a wash of thinned down Dark Green Ink to tie in the contrast in the highlights and to give it some shine. ^^

hope you like it. =)

Nordic
01-07-2009, 21:26
@Mrtn: thanx mate!

@Feefait: ive not played with it yet. But i might use it as a, i dunno, Giant? or a Burrowing behemoth from the Hell Pit Army List featured in white dwarf. Ive read rumours of a big big rat for the new Skaven book so if those rumors are true, well then i will use it as one of those big things.

@Txan:yeah, true, though ive heard that the new Armybooks dont allow DoW, guess i will have to take it to a game soon then, where i can use it as a giant, but ive heard about a really big rat Rare choise for the new army book. so i hope to use it as one of those things, whatever they are. =)

@MF3000: thanx alot. i think that little guy is one of my absolute fav minis ive converted. =D

Aaaaand a new character! i couldnt help myself. Soon i can make a small regiment with all my characters alone. =P
its made from an old khorne champion that i snipped the tail off and filed and sawed away his head. i replaced the head with a plauge monk head and sculpted some chainmail.

PIP!!! i have a few Plauge Monks left to do before im done with them.

Been a while since i posted anything but i have not been slacking, oh no! but ive gotten off track from my skaven. i'll start a 40k army soon, it will be Witch hunters FYI. im also working on a conversion commision for a friend. i will get some vintage skaven and gutter runners for the trouble. wich is very nice! i think the conversion turns out great! i have some stuff to do on it before i show any pics of it but its nearly finished after four hours of work.

ok, back on the skaven topic! i played a border patrol game against Orcs and Goblins(my bitter Enemy) yesterday! i made alot of errors, even when writing the army list. lol. i used:

1 warlock engineer, full kit -pistol. storm daemon.

25 clanrats with standard bearer and musician plus ratling gun

5 night runners with add. handweapons

9 Plauge Cencer bearers (heres the error, i can field PCBs without Plauge monks due to PCBs Special rule, Disciple lol. but we noticed that halfway through the game. :P

Turn 1
Orcs start by advancing his force
my Warlock engineer fryed four out of five Orc Boar boys (the last one made his LD roll) with and irresistible force Warp lightning, my ratling gun couldnt reach anything so it didnit shoot.

turn 2
fried 8 night goblins with Warplightning but they didnt flee! i killed the last orc boarboy that charged my Night runners.

turn 3
My clanrats got charged by his Orc Boys with Black Orc Big Boss (his general).he breaks them and they flee, the night runners and my general sees the horror of fleeing clanrats so they start to run too. the orcs prusue the clanrats and manages to over run my ratling gun in the process so it doesnt enven manage to fire in the entire game!!!

Turn 4
My PCBs Charges his Night Goblin Unit, breaks them and runs them down. now i only have my Warlock (who is fleeing) and a unit of Plauge cencer bearers cuz my Night Runners runs off the table before they can rally.

Turn 5
My PCBs charges his Orc Unit that just killed my clanrats. my Warlock miraculusly rallies and cast Warplightning at the Orcs (Rule fail, you cant rally and throw magic in the same turn. plus i cast magic in the middle of the combat phase cuz i thought i had forgotten the magic phase but it was in this turn that he rallied wich i realized after the game.) he managed to get himself killed cuz i rolled two 1s when i threw WL. but he managed to take five or six orcs with him. my PCBs killed the whole first rank of Orcs so only the boss and the black orc could hit back.

Turn 6
The orcs manages to kill my PCBs with only four models remaining, his Black orc Big boss, and three orcs, one is boss. so it was a narrow victory for the Orc Player!

bigger pic (http://fc06.deviantart.com/fs49/f/2009/224/b/5/Slaanesh_Demon_Prince_by_Nordic_Dragon.jpg)
heres a Commision im i just finished for a friend. He will use it in his emperors children army for warhammer 40 000. i get some skaven models as payment wich is really nice. =) im very happy about this one, the basic model isnt that beautiful but i hope ive managed to make him look really cool.

I took the horns from the other head since you got both in the box, sawed them off the old head and put them on the new one cuz my friend wanted it that way, i think it looks terrific. also the wings awas pretty badass too . though the pinning and green stuffing wasnt too fun but the result was great. i made the base rubble from an old wine cork that i broke into pieces and glued to the base. the spikes are made in a regular pencil sharpener. theyre made from balsa wood.
i had to put him on these rocks or his wings would've been sceraping the ground so i posed him on this to make him higher above the table. =) plus it looks really cool standing on stones. :P
i think he'll like it.
i might get to paint this fella too. we will see! =)

converting it took about six hours all in all.

hope you like it.

I got some old school skavens from a friends friend for FREE!

its an old paintjob that is pretty good actually, i will probably redo the nails, make them bonecoloured instead of red, and the Screaming bell will probably get an overhaul, the doomwheel driver is pretty nicely painted so i will only paint his nose skincoloured and give all of them my skavenwash to tie them in with the rest of my army.

I love Ikit Claws paperbanner!

So now i have two deathmasters and two Thanqouls lol! parts of ikit claw will be repainted like the scabbard and holster will be brown instead of red and the skavensymbol on his forehead as well.

I will hopefully get some more old skavens when ive painted the Daemonprince of slaanesh i showed earlier as well.

Bought some bits today from a friend for a cheap price and got this, amongst other stuff. i have no clue of how much it is but most of it is just unused bits but some of it is converted stuff and a very small percent is nearly unusable bits. but bits none the less! i think theres enough bits to make like 10 to 15 plauge monks, and around 20+ night runners and a few packmasters cuz i got a Rat Ogre as well. for 250 Sek wich is about 21£, a true bargain!

i think this diorama can become really cool and will work more on it once i have the time.

I'm liking the WLC. I'd never have thought of using the plastic ghouls as the basis of slaves - it works really well. I can imagine the regular exposure to large lumps of warpstone would change them into hunched over monstrosities - nice.

Excellent work on that palanquin Nordic. Your modeling skills are far superior to mine, but I would like to make one suggestion.

The bells on the seat back are a great touch, but I think that they would look more realistic if they were moving in the same direction. I've read somewhere (WD ork boss master class I think) that its important for things like chains and cloaks to be pointing in the same direction, i.e. wind, or movement would likely cause everything to move in just one direction. Of course this may result in problems with positioning your seated mini, but I thought I'd just put that idea to you.

Keep up the good work. Your blog is great inspiration - I can't wait to get hold of the new Skaven plastics and try some conversions myself.

Heres yet more wip! it will probably be some sort of Moulder special character or something. im not sure about keeping the scales or not. i think i will though, cuz i think it looks cool, i feel that most of you are gonna be against the idea of beast riding beast. i am a bit hesitant but i think it can be really cool. any rules suggestion for a master moulder special character on a wolf-rat?
I'm thinking a Master moulder vermintide spellcaster, perhaps with fear and mount save. What would that be, a 4 or 3+ save or something? And perhaps a wardsave of 5+ (from a warpstone amulet) because he cant join any units and being a single target he needs some protection.

The wolf rat is made from a 5th (or 4th?) edition flesh hound of khorne and some plastic Rat Ogre pieces. The rider's legs are Kroq'gar's legs, the upper body and arms are from the crypt ghoul ghast body. the thingscatcher is from a plastic pack master. i will have some smaller rats running around on the base as well for decoration.

I like your Moulder wolf rat rider - you've captured a great sense of movement with that model. The 'back banner' from the ghoul body fits really well with a moulder character - its like a scaled down queek (the new one).

I see no reason why a heavily mutated skaven couldn't develop scales - how well they fit is going to depend on how you paint the model I think.

The new character mounts in the new skaven army book are opening up some nice conversion opportunities for skaven generals and you've started to take full advantage of those possibilities - just a rat ogre mount left for you to do ;)

@n810: thank you very much. =)

@Nemesis: thank you, and im curious since i dont have the book yet, what mounts are there? Rat Ogre mounts, that sounds crazy! i think i will paint the scales like bone so that it doesnt contrast too much with the rest of the mini.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/Nordic_Dragon/MountedMasterMoulder_001.jpg
More work has been done on this fella, well, more fur at least. I also gave the rat ogre's head bigger eyes to make it more ratlike. and it also made it alot more scary in my opinion! Oh, and its brown stuff, not green stuff btw. i ordered some and got it yesterday and tried it out today. its really good if you mix in some of the yellow part from the green stuff otherwise it was too hard or just not warm enough.

@Nordic, I've not seen the book yet either, but there is an awful lot of chatter in this thread

http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=224403

The first post gives a nice summary - in a nutshell, the mounts are litter (i.e. palanquin), rat ogre and giant rat (or any quadruped would work, just like yours). The exact mounts available depend upon the character type/clan.

Another thing to note is that it seems Skaven generals will have more access to magic banners that before, so thats another excuse to lavish extra conversion attention on some models.

I'm just getting back into the hobby after ~15 years, can I ask you about brown stuff - I've never used it. Will you use it to sculpt any particular materials e.g. fur, or will you use it as an overall replacement for green stuff? Am I right in thinking it gives a sharper edge?

Nordic
30-11-2009, 00:13
@spetswalshe: Thanx alot. =)

@Nemesis_the_warlock: Brown stuff is easier to make sharp edges with than it is with green stuff. Sculpting fur is just a taste thing, if you like green or brown stuff better imo.

Heres an old Warlock Engineer from 1995. i Thought i'd use it as one now that the warlocks have become more wizardish than in the last edition. plus he doesnt have any items that look very magical or engineery so he is more warlock than engineer perhaps? dunno but i love the model! i painted the checkers to break up the cloth from the skin areas because they blended into each other too much. there was bareley any difference even though i didnt even use the same colours!

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/Nordic_Dragon/Warpfirethrower001_001.jpg
And a Warpfire thrower if i would use ine, wich is likely since ive heard that the ratling gun is useless nowdays (?) wich seems strange, from what i can understand its just needs to roll to hit with its bullets, its not bad, but what the heck! sorry for the dark photos.

Nice work on both models. :) I like those old warlocks as well.

It's not just that the ratling gun has been nerfed, it's also that the WFT is much better now, since all models under the template are hit automatically. So instead of maybe 2 sure hits and 8 partials you may now get 10 sure hits.

Nordic

Nordic, firstly thanks for the compliments in regards to my Skaven plog! Secondly, you've got one amazing looking Skaven army yourself, my friend! This stuff is just incredible, and very, very characterful! I particularly love your banner work, and I think it really captures the essence of what Skaven heraldry is all about....ragged, subdued colours, with scrawled symbols of verminous doom and superiority painted on them. Very, very nice work! I look forward to seeing more!

Nordic
20-12-2009, 13:29
@N810: thanx alot. =)

@Caligula: Thank you, well, the way i see skaven banners is that they would just scrabble a big symbol of their regiment onto their banner just so they can keep some sort of order and the clanrats paint their shields with the emblem of their standard with chalk or some white paint. Plus its easier for me to keep track of what rat belongs to what regiment.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/Nordic_Dragon/PaintedArmy_002.jpg
So i took some pics of my force this far and just counted all the points i have just by looking at the models, so no upgrades for any of the heros or anything like that. The warlock engineers are the only exception. they cost 100 pts each after ive upgraded them to lvl 2 wizards. The grey seer on screaming bell costs 440pts. My force is worth 3149 pts un-upgraded! that means no magic weapons or anything for the heroes! although ive included one special character (DM Snikch). i will repaint the Screaming bell since its a bit too bright for my taste personaly (its not painted by me), and give it a base as well.

All of this has been assembled, converted and painted in less then a year!
I started this army for real in february! and i have lots more to paint as well!

For example:
7 Jezzail Teams
10-11 Poison Wind Globadiers
7-ish Gutter Runners
1 Warpfire thrower
1 Grey seer Thanqoul
1 Ikit Claw
20 ish Clanrats
a couple of metal Plauge monks as well.

So the horde is growing!

I will base all five of them at the same time. they we're one of the first buy's i did for my first 500 pts list, along with 9 poison wind globadiers and some clanrats as well as a warlock engineer. the horde has grown to over 3000 points now. :P

*Hienous Threadomancy!*

Hello again, ive been gone for a few months. Your assassins didnt get me this time either! :P And i have some new stuff to show you guys, my next conversion!

http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2010/153/c/6/Skryre_Warlord_001_by_Nordic_Dragon.jpg
its a Skryre Warlord on Warlitter conversion, i have used two Epic Ork vehicles, some lego, plasticard, chaos space marine torso, a poison wind globadier backpack, rat ogre armor, a packmaster head, some imperial guard weapon team Tripod and probably some other bits and pieces i cant remember.
He will be geared with; Warlitter, Tailweapon, Warpstone Armour, Foul Pendant, probably a Weeping Blade and a Shield.
The armor and tailweapon is in place on the warlord, so what i have left to do is a foul pendant, shield, and a weeping blade. The arms are the biggest problem right now, because i want arms similiar to the epic model(i think its a epic model) in the top picture. so they need to be pretty big so i have to scratchbuild it with plasticard, wich im not that good with but what the heck, its skaven. it doesnt need to be outstanding craftsmanship. :P

Hope you like it. =)

Another ingenious, creative (and diabolical! - in the evil sense of the word) conversion. :)

For the arms, isn't there any way you can use normal skaven arms and build stuff up around them. If you wanted them bigger you could always cut them into two or three sections (hands, forearms, upper arms) and join them up with wire, almost as though he had gone to the lengths of chopping his arms into bits just so that he could install some experimental weaponry.

Whatever you decide to do, I can wait to see the next step!

Hey Nordic, great use of the old epic ork traktor cannons I completely forgot about them until I saw your conversion........memories. The model you're using as inspiration is an old rogue trader era 40k chaos blood slaughterer. GW scaled it up and released it in epic as the Lord of Battle, basically a Khornate mini titan. Arm-wise, do you have access to any old skool necrons? Failing that maybe try out the cadian cmd squad for a bionic arm or scratch build one out of platicard pipes.

Nordic

@Warh: thanks alot mate. =)

@Elfboy: A good suggestion. we will see what i do. i have lengthened arms with plasticard before and that worked quite well.

@Kiwichild: Nice! i knew it was khorne and probably epic but thanks for the rest of the info. =)
And sadly nope, i dont have any of those things you describe. not even plasticard pipes. =( i have already used my bionic arm from the cadian command sprue.

Right.. So I have moved from home and left my old skaven there. I have been hesitant to buy the new skaven since the new models came out because they wouldn't fit in with the old monkey-skaven that I have. So Instead of adding to that old army I'll start a new one from scratch!
So what better way than to buy a IoB pack? Man it's a great box! Luv it!

I want some help with ideas, a theme for the army, if anyone has any suggestions or armies that are inspiring I would gladly like to see them!
I have been thinking about a town theme with cobblestones or something as if they were invading a imperial city or maybe a underground theme. It's only loose ideas and I'm open for suggestions! I want to avoid the brown theme I had going on with my old army.
Painting tips are welcome as well! I don't want to make a big mass of brown like my old army was.

Back in action, eh Nordic?
The cobblestone bases sounds like a cool idea to go on and will definitely help make them stand out. If you don't want a mass of brown try varying the shades of their fur. I know black and white fur has meanings to Skaven and are unusual but maybe sandy coloured fur?
If you really want you could try painting their clothes in really bright colours, I know it's not very skaven-like but they'll definitely stand out and if you do end up painting lots of brown again then the gaudy clothes will break it up a bit!

I made a Cobblestone test effect I saw this technique somewhere either here on warseer or on the underempire, creds to whoever came up with the idea! But I'm not quite sure if I like the effect. Maybe I should paint it first before I dismiss it completely.

Yesterday I painted the rusty metal on one of the regiments while I wait for the Army Quick Shade to arrive. Hopefully it will come in two weeks time, My LGS has a reputation of not being too quick when it comes to orders.
It's basecoated with vermin brown then drybrushed/stippled with chainmail.

This is the first painted clanrat ready for dipping. These new skaven are really fun to paint! The dip will hopefully arrive in two weeks, in the meantime I'll just base paint the army. If I finish this bunch before the dip arrives I'll probably get another IoB box and paint that up as well.

Edit: I just came up with a theme! how about an Empire themed skaven army, like the one in the first grey seer novel? Feathers and puffed arms and looted empire bits and the like. That way I can use the theme as an excuse to buy some of the new Empire stuff. :P Imagine the new empire griffon converted into a Hell Pit Abomination!

An Empire themed army sounds great! As you say, it will offer plenty of options for great conversions! Furthermore, as most of the Empire and Skaven range is available in plastic, converting models and swapping bits should be really easy (I can imagine a combination of a War Altar and Screaming Bell, with the Grey Seer in the ornate pullpit or even Stormvermin armed with greatswords)... Go for it!

As you're still looking for cobbled bases, check out my plog. I made custom cobbled bases for my Empire army and now offer the same bases for trade/sale. I have 12 different sizes available and they can be supplied in any number desired (and thus save you the trouble of making your own :))... The plaster bases are very durable, extremely detailed and easy to paint. Shipping to Sweden shouldn't be a problem as I've already sent some to Australia... Hit me with a PM if you're interested or if you would like more information (available sizes and prices)...

I don't know if I finished the Lustria one. It wasn't as good as the first one imo. It got a bit tedious when they were running back and forth in the jungle assaulting the tempel somewhere in the middle of the book.

That screaming bell combined with war altar would look pretty cool, I was thinking of maybe getting the Luminarch and convert it into a warp lightning cannon perharps. just a loose idea.
Heh, Stormvermin armed with greatswords would look good but that would be a really expensive unit to convert plus stormvermin can't use great weapons unfortunately.

I don't buy stuff off eBay, dunno why really. probably because I don't trust it, and I don't trust it because I don't know anything about it and I don't know anything about because I'm lazy. so I guess I don't really have any excuses not to use it other than I'm lazy.

So, I bought the Blood on the Reik book (really cool, if you like crazy artwork) and a Empire General Box, which I've been hacking away at today. And here's the fruit of todays labour. I made a warlord on bonebreaker. The bonebreaker is dressed up as a griffon. I'll add reins to it as well once all the green stuff has cured. It was too dark in my kitchen to take any decent closeups (my camera wouldn't focus). Hopefully you can see I have green stuffed a beak-on-a-string to it and the wings are also on leather strips. I had to make a new chestplate from green stuff because I didnt want to hack at the original chestplate.

In the blood on the Reik book there is talk of human skaven cultists. Humans who worship the Skaven! I think I will make some of those to use as slaves.

I hope you enjoy and C&C appreciated!

Here is all the painted ones. I have one weapon team, two rat ogres and the warlord left to paint, peace of cake! Feels good!
The wash will take awhile to arrive so I think I will buy another box IOB box to flesh out my army some more but first I will do the bases. I have been thinking of doing two skaven armies at the same time because I really like clan Mordkin also. would be awesome to convert some of those crypt horrors into rat ogres! and adding some of the pierced bones from the ghoul pack to the clanrats would look really cool I think. bah! I should finish this army first damnit!

I bought another quick dip, tried it. Looked horrible (I didn't take any pictures), now I know why you should DIP the minis and not brush it on- the dip dissolves the paint! I have de-ordered my quickshade and will go ahead and paint them in a normal fashion. Here's the result.

Good to see you sticking to your theme... I like the small Empire bits added to the models!

As for Empire cultists, have you considered using Flagellants as Slaves? Before I started my Empire army I thought about starting Skaven and one of my ideas was to use them (minus the flails but with added chains) as Slaves. Maybe add a Skaven Slavemaster with a whip to drive them on...

I probably won't put them in chains though considering the are not slaves per se.

Looks good, they do remind me of the descriptions of the foppish tendencies exhibited by the Under-Altdorfers in "Grey Seer".Exactly what I was going for! I was unsure whether it was Under-Altdorf or Under-somethingelse that was featured in the Grey seer novel. I read it when it was new so my mind is a little bit hazy about the details.

Cultists! I got a hold of my Flagellants and Free company box. I also bought a Ghoul box. this combined with a state troops box is what i've done today. I have been looking at Blanche artwork for inspiration. I for one love his stuff! its very inspiring and it jogs my creativity and inspiration, the artwork I looked at for these skaven cultists came from the Blood on the Reik book, some of these conversions are attempts to make models of some of those illustrations.

From top left corner we have: The Butcher's son, it was the first one I did today. He's made from a plague monk body, a flagellant head and ghoul arms. the rat cage with giant rats is a old skeleton shield with some added iron wire, then we have Crooked cutlass, I simply swapped his torso for a Night Runner torso and bent his cutlass and dagger some. the bone that hangs from his belt is from the flagellants sprue. third one top right is a flagellant with an arm from the free company box. the bone on his forehead is from the ghoul box.

Middle row from the left is Bellman 1 (swedish pun intended) made from ghoul, flagellant and free company bits with a skaven bell for a hand. second one is Bellman 2, made from ghoul and flagellant bits with a added skaven bell for arm. then we have the second one i started with, hunchback, he has a night runner torso and free company arms and legs with some plasticard added that will be painted as wood once it comes to that. Head is from flagellants.

Bottom row from the left we have the brawler, head and bottle from state troopers, legs and torso from free company, arms from flagellants. Then comes the soldier with state trooper body, head and sword arm. his left arm is from the free company box. Then we have scarecrowguy, flagellant body, free company arms and zombie banner for arms, I really like this guy. And the last one is made from ghoul legs and arms, and more zombie banner bits and some flagellant bits and a old skelelton spear. This last fellow creeps me out a little.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/Nordic_Dragon/P5239994.jpg
Here they are all ranked up.

I will fill some gaps with green stuff and add fur cloaks to some of these. the last guy will get a belly but I intend to have some ribs showing.

Thanks alot! I think they will be painted in some more browns with some hints of red and blue to symbolize that the skaven have taken all the red and blue fabric from them. Tackar! I was afraid they'd steal the show. The clanrats are almost impossible to convert due to their monopose nature. on the other hand they are alot easier to rank up. Don't know really what to do about that.

Right, so after the little cultist detour I finished the remaining Clanrats from the Island of blood box. Just a side note, I took all the more heavily armored clannies and put spears on them since its an upgrade I figured they should have better armour in addition to their spears. In the top pics is the converted unit champion. It's a state trooper arm added as well as a state trooper hat. I also green stuffed a puff arm on his shieldarm to match the puff on his sword arm. The shoulder and loincloth are aspecially very clean and crisp.

How did you paint that warpstoned skin? I need to do something simular for my abomination soon :D

Also you did a great job on the "Gas Bombs" of the Mortar but don't you think they should be glossy? I always figured they were made of glass and the swirley clouds was gas you could see through the glass :)

EDIT: Also agree with you on the warpstone from the packmaster, especially the bottompicture makes it look like it is powering up and starting to glow!

Thanks alot mate! Yes, I agree the gas bombs should be glossy, I'll fix that later with some gloss varnish.

I stole Slivers recipe for the warpstone so all kudos to him. "The warpstone was painted after the skin, starting with scorpion green (thinned down more and more the further from the source, for a light effect). Then highlighted with scorpion green + white, the stone itself then washed with snot green, then re highlight with scorpion green + white and then pure white."

The Bonebreaker almost finished. I'll paint the Warlord tomorrow. I used the Deathclaw paintsheme on GWs website for reference on the skin and beak. I In the middle of painting I got inspiration to do the front piece barding thingy and paint red and blue on the armor. came out quite nice imo. The tailfeather will get some more work done to it. I'll make it so that it looks like its been tied in place. I think it made a huge difference to turn the face forwards instead of having it sideways. Really loving the cape, the beak and the reins. The skin of the rat ogre could use some more shading I think, that would probably make it look better. If you look at your Clanrats their skin seems a bit darker with more shading. So an extra wash might do the trick.

So, I have started a Witch Hunters warband for mordheim and this is one of the witch hunters. I put him together before my first game. I played as defender in the Breakthrough scenario against a Night goblin warband with two trolls, a Hero troll and a Henchman troll, my Ws2 Zealot killed the Henchman troll with a Dagger! I Won but at great costs. All my heroes but this fellow here and two zealots and a Warhound were taken out of action and for that he got and advancement, +1S and +1I for a total of 4 in each stat.
I dunno if the lists are taken from the internet or if the gaming group wrote the lists themselves, they have done some modifications themselves, added warbands from each race in warhammer essentially.

Love the assassin and warlord on bonebreaker, some really great stuff here :)Thanks alot Logan!

Amazing witch hunters, and that priest blows any of GW's efforts off the table.ha! Thank you very much!

I really like these models :). I'm confused though (probably just missed it...), do you field them with the skaven rules or with the empire rules? Does either army have a unit called cultists? o.O I field them as Skaven. the so called cultists really are just normal Skavenslaves. They're cultists just for the fluff.

I know it's Nordic's log but I can answer this. It's a Skaven army that's playing Empire cosplay! The cultists represent Skavenslaves I think. You are absolutley correct Astraeos. =)

So, more work has been done on the mordheim warband. I said I would make some modifications to this fellow and I did. I change his left arm and head as I thought it didn't look zealous enough and I wanted the scabbard closer to the body so I changed the arm too. Looks better imo. the red is a little washed out in this photo though it should be a little bit more nuanced highlights.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/Nordic_Dragon/P6060412.jpg
The redeemed cultist is now named Reinhard. I love painting red armor so I think I'll give all my witch hunters red armor. I had two games of mordheim today and in the first of the two Reinhard failed his fear test maybe two or three times against a skeleton and a vampire. But he survived the battle and got a skill advancement. I was fed up with him failing his fear tests so I gave him the Fearless warrior skill that makes him immune to fear and treats double fear as regular fear or something like that. its a skill that the local gaming group came up with when they modded mordheim I think.

So, some more Witch hunters! This is a witch hunter armed with a crossbow, sword, shield and clad in a helmet and heavy armor.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/Nordic_Dragon/P6090464.jpg
Next up is a sword toting Zealot with light armor and helmet who doubles as a Skaven Cultist.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/Nordic_Dragon/P6090455.jpg
Then we have the Warrior Priest of Sigmar who had two sigmarinte warhammers, heavy armor, helmet and holy tome. He died in my last battle but fortunatley I could by a new one but the new one don't have the same gear but I won't do anything about it WYSIWYG-wise as I aim to get the same gear for him as he had before.
I thought i'd switch the colour sheme around and make the armor red instead of the robes. the robes got white because I thought that would look good together. I tried to make some sort of magical effect on the hammers since they are magical, holy and all but It really did'nt look good so I settled for metallic colours on them.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/Nordic_Dragon/P6100468.jpg
Heinrich Kramer, the captain of the warband. Named after one of the authors of the Malleus Maleficarum. or the Witch Hammer as it is also called. it was the Witch hunter's handbook in the middle ages, written 1486.
Now that I see the pictures I notice that I should highlight the armor a little bit more and fix some stuff around the area where the flames and the metal meet.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/Nordic_Dragon/P6100477.jpg
And Last but not least a group shot of all the painted Warband members. I have two warhounds on my charter but I don't have any suitable models for those. I've only won 1 game (my first) out of 5 total but its been really fun anyways! I also played a game of regular Warhammer fantasy with my skaven. I lost one game and won one game there. (Though the match where I won was the special scenario Heroic last stand which is kinda hard to loose.)

I have checked out Boreas bases, they look nice but they are not really what i'm looking for. They look too neat and tidy plus they are at an angle. I want my bases to be something like these city rubble bases but square ofcourse. and more medieval or mordheimy.

I paint about 1½ minis a day during this summer. I get up early (for me) in the morning so I can paint for about 40-60 minutes before I go to the summer course where I learn how to sculpt a anatomically correct human body called Ecorché.

Here is some more Mordheim stuff. A female Witch hunter. It's converted from the plastic Dark Elf Sorceress and two guns from the Empire handgunner kit. The sword and the bullets come from that kit too. The rest is green stuff. the sword, bullets and ponytail are only blu-tacked in place. the pony tail comes from the goblin wolf rider kit. I'm thinking about adding a belt across her left shoulder with some pouches and stakes or whatnot.

Ok, so I followed your suggestion to take Empire Flags instead of the normal standard bearer and I really like it. I think I will paint it in some kind of empire heraldry like thing but with rats and runes instead of griffons and texts about Karl Franz and sigmar. The new Abelhelm! Looks alot more witch huntery imo. Now you can see that he has a sword, shield, crossbow and heavy armor which was my main concern and the big reason I made a new model for him. He got to keep his mustache though. I used two skaven cloaks and green stuff to make the coat.

My birthday is coming up and my girlfriend will get me the plastic Nurgle Chaos Lord for present hopefully. But I wonder what should I do with it? Should I make it into a fat Barbarian or give it some form of clothing and make it something more Mordheimy? He is pretty big so I doub't I could do anything with him for the Undead warband but I was thinking about a magistrate for the Cult, perhaps a darksoul? It would be cool to give him some clothing or at least more armor. I have been thinking on what warband to do next and I'm leaning towards Cult of the possessed or the Undead.
If you have seen any cool conversions on this guy I would be very happy to see them posted here for inspirational purposes!

Ok, so I have begun hacking away at the nurgle lord! I'm not sure about what to play him as yet but the concept is that he is a gourmand who have become a cannibal. He will get some nice clothing and a mozart style wig (http://www.ofletters.com/composers/mozart.gif). And a serrated smile that goes from ear to ear. He holds in his right hand a heart and in his left hand he has a mace I made sevral years ago that has been lying around in my bitsbox for far too long. notice his syphilis pinky finger. I sawed off his shoulderpad to get some more options when posing him.

hmm, now that I look at the pictures I realize that maybe he should have a giant meat axe instead of a mace?

Hope you like and C&C is welcome!

You do yourself down mate, the dogs are excellent! I'm anticipating that the nurgle lord is going to end up looking 3000% more disgusting than the dogs, but I'll be interested in seeing what you do with him. You could add some flowers to go with his powdered wig (a futile attempt to disguise the smell of rotting flesh and gore?). Maybe put a cleaver on his belt instead of a giant axe? Presumably he likes to tenderise his dinner before chopping it up, so no reason you couldn't give him both an axe/cleaver and a mace/hammer :skull:

I stripped his skirt/robe thingy. It didn't quite cut it for me, too much nice detail disappeared, I think I'll make it look like he has tight trousers or maybe some fluffy pants instead and go for more of a (fat mutant) noble gourmand look.

Here's the start of what I hope will be a Undead warband! A necromancer with the body from the corpse cart driver, the metal hand is from the Mordheim necromancer and the head is the bright wizard head from the empire wizard kit that I have shaved.
I have ordered the Fenris wolfs to use as Dire wolves and some Empire archers to convert into some zombies and zealots.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/Nordic_Dragon/P9052173.jpg
Here is the four zombies from the corpse cart kit that I have converted and cut away the poles from their chests. I will greenstuff the torsos properly. Really what I wanted from this kit was one of the cart drivers heads to use as a face for my vampire a lá Asp (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y61/gideontheghoul/Mordheim/Vampire_Posh.jpg).

Here's a wraith for my mordheim warband. In my local gaming group they have changed the undead entry quite a bit from the original mordheim setting so with their rules I can use a wraith and grave guard heroes. the dregs have become henchmen. They have also added all the bloodlines so there isn't just the Von Carsteins to choose from.
I've had her torso laying around in my bits box for years and finally I've found a use for it. I gave her some Sigarmite props to suggest she was once a sister of sigmar but now she has been ressurrected by the very forces she was fighting in life!
It's ofcurse heavily inspired by Julian Bayliss' Vampire counts army which is amazing!

A lot of nice conversions in here! The necro is simple and classic. I actually like the zombies. I mean they are better than a lot of the doofy old ones. Granted their pose was meant for pulling the corpse cart, however they are fantasy shambling zombies. Let'em seizure across the battle field, its not like their rotting musculature and rigor mortis could affect the way they walk..

Heres the latest progress on the Nurgle Lord conversion. I've added a sleeve for his jacket. the buttons and stuff you see on his stomach is actually for the underlying shirt and the sleeves are for the jacket.

I wanted to see if I could make a demonette head look more human looking by adding some eyebrows and a proper nose. It makes a pretty good vampire imo. =)

Here we have a Bloodletter turned Strigoi vampire in the first stages of green stuff. I was inspired by the artwork in the latest vampire counts army book for this one.

Do you ever question at what point it'd be easier to just sculpt a miniature from scratch? That Nurgle conversion is more greenstuff than miniature at this point! And all the better for it. Absolutely gorgeous stuff.
I'm not too keen on the Bloodletter head for the Strigoi. The body works absolutely perfectly, but how about the head from the zombie dragon kit?

Seeing that Daemonette head with human features added reminds me of that Escher gang you started! Whatever happened to them? You are right about it making a good Vampire though, a Lahmian (or effeminate Von Carstein) would be the best choice here I reckon.

I have rearranged some of the trinkets and details, also obviously I have reposed it so that she does the sign of the twin tailed comet. A cultist for my Possessed warband. It's converted from the Chaos Cultist from 40k with a old Chaos warrior shield added. I have removed all the 40k bits like the bionic eye, dogtags and the autopistol ofcourse!

http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/068/9/7/untitled_by_nordic_dragon-d5xhmjd.jpg
This Cultist is probably my favourite of the three with his beaked mask and two-handed-weapon-to-be. He looks like a slasher villian. I cut away the cable from the phial-shaped thing and made it into an actual phial and removed his bionic eye.

http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/068/f/1/untitled_by_nordic_dragon-d5xhmmk.jpg
I dremeled away the very fan-backpack from this fellow and added a blasphemous book to his back instead. I also gave him a great weapon. I tilted his head back to make it look like he was howling at the moon.

Nobody expects the Inquisition!
ok, so I bought Witch hunter Tyrus for Inquisitor because I had this idea of reposing him so that he will look more like the cover version on the Inquisitor Rulebook.
So tonight I separated his leg from his groin and the foot from the leg and filed down the groin as well so that he can have a more natural walk. I'll remove his bolt pistol and resculpt his gauntlet. I'm also thinking about remaking his pauldrons from plasticard so that they look more like the artwork pauldrons.
The biggest pain was to blu-tac him enough to take the pictures!
I have ordered two more Inquisitor boxes that should arrive sometime next week.

I'm thinking about renaming and/or moving this plog to the general section, since I do alot more than just Skaven and it just rerailed from Fantasy as well! =P

I already have 2 boxes worth :P, I like my warbands to be a bit "uniformed" though so I would probably use one model pose for one warband (both of them, obviously convered) and another for the other, or something, those warbands aren't really well concepted in my head yet too much other stuff infront of them in the que.Ah, I see. well, looking forward to see someone else convert them for fantasy.

I have begun painting Tyrus. So far it's been really fun actually. I have noticed that you need to start quite close the finished color and just highlight from there rather than shade stuff because the model is so big that it will shade naturally. Ofcourse I'll try to shade it properly as well, I'm just saying.

http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/078/7/2/tyruswip_003_by_nordic_dragon-d5ylo43.jpg
The red Aquila is really washed out as well as the skulls in these pictures. The skin in this picture and the one above is also really washed out and horrible.

http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/078/3/b/tyruswip_003_by_nordic_dragon-d5ylo4h.jpg
Here you can see a rather faithful picture of the skin. I'm very happy with the eye and the blacklining around it. I'm also thinking about giving it a light red wash to give it more life and make it less dead and brownish.

Hope you like and C&C is welcome!

I think the skin is looking quite good right now. But I do see what you mean by wanting to make it look more alive.

I've added some more colour to the face with a couple thin washes of baal red and some leviathan purple around the eye (does it look like a black eye? it looks pretty good irl but enlarged like this it looks a little weird). I have also finished the rest of the head. great fun!
His cheekbone got messed up, thats why its all uneven and stuff.

http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/088/0/c/untitled_by_nordic_dragon-d5zq6rx.jpg
I haven't got very much done other than highlight the gold and started with the silver areas. the metal on the powerfist and the blade is pretty much done.

http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/088/7/f/untitled_by_nordic_dragon-d5zq6bp.jpg
I have started to sculpt a female inquisitor of my own while I wait for the order of my next inquisitor models. she came out pretty bulky but I don't mind. Some variation in bodytypes are only a good thing imo. not all are built like supermodels, besides you need some muscle if you're gonna swing a powerfist. which is what this lady will do, in addition to holding an inferno pistol. gotta add some more mass to her left leg before I start on the next layer of clothing and armor.

http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/088/e/0/untitled_by_nordic_dragon-d5zq7vu.jpg
I have also started on a female desperado. I got inspired to do her when I listened to a song called Lanky Rae by Witch mountain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXS-lkJBOGE). The lyrics describe her as being "...7 feet tall and not graceful at all" and "...she could hit a mark 3 miles away...". pretty fitting for a desperado, don't you think?
I chose to point her toes inward like this and make her have extremely long legs. I also tried to make her 7 feet to scale. she is a little bit shorter than that though. the model would have been huge otherwise. taller than the inquisitor space marine! she stands at about 60mm.

http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/088/4/5/untitled_by_nordic_dragon-d5zq64i.jpg
I also got my order from Bits box filled with empire bits for my skaven, I bought every feathered head I could get my hands on and enough greatswords to kit out all my stormvermin. I'm also waiting for an order from bits and kits as well filled with more feathered hats and other fun stuff.

The head's looking great, and I know what you were trying to achieve with the leviathan purple. Your sculpts are looking interesting but please stay away from the "chain mail bikini" look! By this I mean dress them like they are actually going into battle and not with their midriff, legs and boobs out! Do you know how many vital organs are exposed that way?
Sorry for the rant!

The great sword storm vermin is looking funny, but in a good way. Funny as in "LOL that rat is in a hat", not funny as in you did something wrong to the model.

Tyrus is coming along very nicely, very close to the illustration. And still love the idea of Skaven appropriating Imperial garb.

here is some progress from today. started on the powerfist and the armor. been looking at as much warhammer artwork with sisters of battle and female inquisitors as I could get my hands on for inspiration for the armor. I took off her head to be able to sculpt it easier and add it later.

Here is a rough "sketch" of where I want to go with this. I'm not sure about the topknot. I might go for a more medieval look and give her a chain coif instead.

You probably know this but the Witch Hunters codex and Inquistor rulebook are the best place to look. You can sometimes find Codex Sisters of Battle off eBay for not too much sometimes.

Why don't you go for some flowing hair? I know I went on about boobs and other skin showing but I don't mind exposed heads (despite it being quite a vulnerable area) as it allows you to see the character a bit better.

yeah, i've been flipping through the inquisitor sketchbook and horus heresy collected visions as well. Ideas are forming slowly.

Maybe, but I like the idea of a chainmail hood to give her a more "knight"-y and medieval feel.

http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/096/4/3/untitled_by_nordic_dragon-d60opoc.jpg
Here's a start on the desperado Lanky Rae. I changed her pose completley to something a bit more dynamic. In a way the pose is very graceful but in another its not imo. I think it has something to do with her thrusting her hips forward and almost looking like she's falling over.

http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/096/a/e/untitled_by_nordic_dragon-d60ops2.jpg
I have given all 20 stormvermin greatswords and hats now. next step is to greenstuff some of them and paint them all.
I'm extra satisfied with the champion. he has a good pose imo.

I'd either mount the skulls on mounds or sculpt mounds around them, right now they're not very boob shaped! I think Lanky Rae is a bit too early to tell how the pose will work out.

Another good book to check out is the Emperor's Will. The Emperor's Might is more Space Marine centric though so I don't think it's the bets for Inquisitor projects. There are so many art books I've missed from the Black Library, I'd love to get Xenology and the 'Gothic and the Eldritch', but I was lucky enough to get 'The Skaven and all their vile kin' or whatever it was called! Speaking of, nice going on the Stromvermin!

Here's yet another new sculpt I'm working on. It will be a fat rogue trader and I've taken alot of inspiration from the pictures on page 66 & 67 in the inquisitor rulebook.
I wanted emphasis on Rogue in rogue trader on this character. I will probably sculpt a holster on the gun so that it looks like he is unholstering it while offering his hand in a friendly gesture to convey his rogue nature.

Three faces two of which I probably will use. I finally got my new inquisitor models. I bought Eisenhorn, Severina & sevora, and the demon huntress. I made stamps from their faces cuz I suck at sculpting facesso its easier to just copy a face and rework it. I am planning on using the demonhuntress head for the female inquisitor I'm sculpting. Imight try to make her snarling so that it will really look like she's putting all her energy into the powerpunch.
Also there's the Rogue trader's face made from an Eisenhorn stamp. probably have to rework the mouth again cuz it doesnt look right the way it is now. you can see my reference in the top of the picture.
I also tried to put togethere the bionic parts from both severina and sevoras heads. I'll have to rework the nose and mouth a bit but otherwise im quite pleased with the result.
