Hi,
I have been a long time lurker and finally decided to use the project logs to help me finish my halfling inspired army. This is my first try at this, so I'll try to attach some pictures. First up a unit of archers. If this works out Ill put more pictures up over the next few days.:)

Very nice.
How many of these do you have? A complete army of Halflings?

Good colors for halflings. I demand to see a halfling lord riding on a giant rooster (could be used as griffon riding knight). :)

"So cute" says the Night Goblin player...

As far as I can tell, this is one of the few warhammer armies ever made that could possibly outdo kittens in the adorability factor.

Until the bowline looses its arrows...

Well I have got a few minutes before I leave for my niece's birthday. Here are a few pictures of all my painted archers. EmperorNorton I have around 500 of the little stunties. All of them are GW and about 150 of them are the old halfling militia models. I originally intended to use them as an Empire army, but as my collection grew I now have plans to build empire, high elf, wood elf, orc and goblin, and bretonnian list. I use the archers as detachments in my current list. doc_cthulhu when I get back Ill post some pics that should make you happy.:)

500 HALFLINGS!?!?!?!?!?! you lucky beggar. I've been scouring ebay for halflings for a long time but they rarely show up, and I dont really feel like paying GW 60 bucks for 10 of em. Not that desperate yet. Anyway nice army, I cant wait to see the whole thing.

Thanks for the comments. Heres a few pics of my mounted wizard lord. I use the rules for pegasus for him. And here are some more of my infantry blocks, two units of 20 spearmen and 1 unit of 25 swordsmen. Also can anyone give me a few tips on lighting. It doesnt seem to matter what I do all my pictures seem so dark. Thanks! When I get a chance I post some pictures of my halfling artillery train (complete with hot pots and keg chuckers:p) and Knights of the Empty Pantry.

As to photos, try to take them outside on a cloudy day, that usually give you enough ambient light. You could also push the pics through Photoshop in postproduction; Image/Adjustments/Auto Levels usually do the trick.

Holy cow, Batman! That's a big number to paint. And the rooster-wizard saved my day. It's excellent.

As for the pics the easiest way to lighten them up is to download some free software like Picasa (for pc) that has easy ways to modify your pics. I'm not sure but there might even be a web site that can "clean up" your pics.

You can also try to change the settings on you camera (ISO-number might be easiest to find - higher number basicly means more light but might add some noise/grain to your pics). There are also numerous articles about photographing your minis in the web.

it's coming this way!

Incredibly cool army project. How did acquire these masses of Halfling minis and how long did it take you?

The conversion of the big barrel lobber is very cool and so is indeed the rest of the army. You have to keep this project going; it will be a memorable army.

How did acquire these masses of Halfling minis and how long did it take you?

Its taken me about two and a half years to collect them. As to getting my hands on them I did every trick I could think of. Right before GW stopped selling bitz I convinced my lovely wife to let me make a large purchase of them from the GW site. That got me about a third of them. The rest I bought from Ebay, my local store, and bartertown. I also found a good use for White Dwarf. I used the retailer list and called every retailer in 5 states to see if they had any left. Maybe tonight while Im waiting for the greenstuff to dry Ill take a group shot of all the halflings.:)

Great project bloke! Just one question: What on earth is a keg chucker? How does it work and what does it do?

A keg chucker is the name I gave my counts as rocket battery.

Heres some pictures of my first version of knights. I'll probably use them as Inner Circle Knights now that I have come up with a second version knights that dont require me to build mini chariots. The last picture is my current test model for them.

Quick update, heres a few work in progress shots of my new knights. I want to eventually build 30 of them for a crusade style army for adepticon next year. Hopefully I can get them all built.:) For the mounts I use hounds of orion and lots of greenstuff. The riders are blood bowl miniatures. Im thinking about making two different orders of knights, one with the bretonnian and empire helmets and the other with pots and pans helmets like my mini chariots. Let me know what you like.

Would you maybe like to join the Tale of Fantasy Painters (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=207730)?
It's something of a community event that was set up to help people stay motivated to get their armies painted.
The people painting Empire armies have set up their own support group (see link in signature) and we're hoping to have every province of the Empire represented.

Did you ever calculate how many points you have of the halflings, painted and unpainted?

Not including characters its about 6000 points.

Its been awhile but I finally managed to finish converting my knights. Im going to call this order of knights the mootguard. Ill eventually build 10 more like this and 10 other knights with pots and pans helmets to go with my 6 IC knights(mini chariots). I call the other order, the knights of the empty pantry. Any ways I need to paint 200pts of stuff by the end of August so I primered a steam tank.

This is really wonderful stuff - there's so much to admire about your work on this army - just a bit different but well thought out and using old gw figs to great effect. The unified colour scheme works really well and there's just the right amount of comedy in the figs without being silly. Can tell this is a labour of love.

So you did find some of the old Ogres, nice.
Great painting, as always.

Yup I found a whole bunch of them on Ebay and my lovely wife agreed to get them for me for Christmas.:) Anyways I have come up with another hair brain idea. I'm thinking about making a skaven clan moulder themed army using my halfings. I want to make it a huge hoard army, like 200 plus models in a 2000pt army. I could use the marauder ogres as rat ogres, the old citadel halfing militia as skaven slaves, the even older marauder halflings as pack masters. I could use the most current halfings with spears and shields or swords and shields as clanrats. I even have a bunch of farm animals from mega miniatures that I could make rat swarms and giant rats from. Also I could make a giant harvester and use it as a doom wheel. Or I could put a bunch of cows and bulls on a chariot base and say they are a stampeeding herd and use it as a hell pit abomination. Also I could make hot chili thowers for weapon teams. I have got a bunch of ideas running threw my head.:D If anyone has any other ideas feel free to give them a shout out.

Awesome!!! I'm planning on making a halfling war altar to go along with my spearmen and archers. I don't know what will be on it(maybe the skrag the slaughterer butcher pot), but it will be pulled by the halfling chefs from the hot pot model. A bunch of em!:D

Great work, keep it up!

Damn, I do miss seeing this army on a regular basis. I'm glad you went back to work on the chuck wagon though, now all you need is the giant cow rider, that's the model I can't wait to see.

Here are some work in progress pics of my battle standard bearer. Also has anyone ever bought the wargames foundry halberd bits. I was thinking about using them on a unit of halfling spearmen, swapping out the spear tip with the halberd top. My only concern is the halberds size.

I think on balance this is one of the best efforts i've seen with classic GW figures - a pretty simple scheme really well executed.

The ogres give a really good balance of scale with the other mini's too. And your painting is top notch.

Overall top marks!

Wow, I cant believe its been over a year since I have done anything with my halflings. Any ways, I hope to get started on a mixed race empire army, with tons of dwarfs, ogres, humans and halflings. Im going for a 5th ed feel, and I dont even care that I wont be able to play it. Anyway heres a few pics of my current work in progress, an halfling arch lector.

Given the retro feel of a lot of GW's recent work, I would venture that it won't be too long until your mixed-race army (or one very much like it) will be usable again, probably sans dwarfs.

And excellent work! I really love the feel of this army, especially the halfling arch lector.

I really like your halflings. I have always liked the multicolor look, but for some reason whenever I try to paint with lots of colors it just doesnt turn out.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I finally finished converting a few things for the army. Heres a few pics of my arch lector, a unit of 30 halberdiers with captain, and a few characters on foot for my next project.

I need to finish a few more conversions then I will finally get to painting. Heres what left to convert,
20 knights
1 mounted bsb
1 mounted general
2 captains on cockatrice (pegasus)
15 handgunners

As for the giant base, I re-based my old giant with the new base size just to be on the safe side. I tried to look for an official answer on what base size it SHOULD be on, with no success. The new base size has its advantages, more room to build a cool base ;)

I would love to see the whole army all lined up.

Cant wait to see the chunk wagon, You have got to make some rules up for lobbing fruit and veg at people! maybe a randomiser table If you roll a 1 you get a grape thrown at you and suffer stupidity for turn whilst your troops **** themselves laughing. Get a six and its a pumkin mortar shot for you boys.

The party wagon looks top notch too.

Engineer on mechanical steed with grenade-launching blunderbuss? Closest thing to a Steam Tank I could think of (but pretty worthless rules-wise).

Is that plasticard you're using? Wow, you sure cut them really accurately. How do you do it?

I have been a tool and die maker for about 15 years, so I have bought and built a lot of tools, fixtures and templates to make my stuff out of plasticard.
Plus having access to a mill is handy. I just cant get myself to build anything out of foam or cardboard, for fear of it being to flimsy. The easiest way that I make a certain shape is to make a template first out paper. Once the paper template is right I tranfer that shape to plasticard or aluminum/steel (for heavier wear). Once I get the template made, I clamp it to the desired plasticard and trace around it with a razor until its completely free. Leaving the plastic clamped to the template, I then paint the sides of the template. Then I file the sides of the plastic until all the paint comes off the template. This gives you the part you want and allows you to make multiple copies. Other that, I use a 6 in' scale, a set of calipers and file. Hope that helps.

Oh I almost forgot, heres some pictures of the mini stank. The barrel is removable so that I can arm it with other weapons, (hochland long rifle, repeater handgun, etc). I put it beside a normal cavalry model so you could get a good size comparison. The last picture shows how the barrel is removable.
