Well, now that Odin is finally back in the shop and more importantly off my ******* work bench I have room to move once again so I decided to make a start on this Stormbird idea. I'll be honest I have been asked to make this for Games day so my heart isnt really in it but it's sort of growing on me a little.

Most important factor was trying to build a presentable model with minimum effort, always my main objective!

Sooooo, finally found a use for that old mech dropship I am always tripping up over, together with another gi joe dragnhawk? toy I picked up for peanuts from ebay.

Two main reason I went for this union is a) The hawk is pretty damn close to one of the only pics I have found of the Stormbird (see below) and b) I thought it would be nice fluff-wise to base both the Stormbird and the Storm Eagle Heavy Lifter (http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/40KStorm%20Eagle.htm) I built a while ago (also based on the same toy) on the same pre-heresy templates. Simples!

Anyhow, here is the only pic I could find, this in essence is what I am using for inspiration
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/dropship-1.jpg

While I ain't aiming for an exact copy (don't want to devote too much time to this project, I got Prototype and Overlord II to play)! I am hoping to keep the spirit and feel of the design
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/StormbirdWIP5060911.jpg

Here are the basics which everything else will be built upon
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/StormbirdWIP506092.jpg

After simply snapping off the front and back of the dropship I was left with the cargo compartment which I unceremoniously just tacked onto the bottom of the hawk with a little hot glue and we're away!

Few hours Saturday morning snipping and slicing the old cardboard and we are at the point of having a basic shape!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/StormbirdWIP506096.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/StormbirdWIP506098.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/StormbirdWIP506099.jpg

Never been one for having just the one ramp for assaulting boarding, might as well just paint a big sign on the door saying 'aim here. please be patient' as a result my SB will have front/rear and 4 side entry/exit points
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/StormbirdWIP5060915.jpg

Apparently the original was meant to carry 100 marines into battle, I upped the anti a little and decided that it would be nice to be able to drop two Rhino sized support vehicles into combat too, hence the rear doors
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/StormbirdWIP5060917.jpg

Larger than a standard Thunderhawk gunbrick of course, the flat bottom and rear ramjets are representative of its ability to drop from orbit and of course have the power to return with a full load to some sort of mother-ship
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/StormbirdWIP5060918.jpg

OK, next on the to do list is to black the whole model up and begin to add panels/details etc. A large flying base will be constructed and I have plans to model it in-flight disgorging its troops from the exits, maybe even a rhino drogue chuting out the back!

Oh, nearly forgot to mention there will be a pred turret going on the top right hand mounting area to represent the defensive turret which you can just see on the ref pic. still not sure whether to lose that cannon on the front and replace it with maybe a twin-linked assault cannon of a more scaled nature, might also thicken that tail section up a little...what ya think?

Nice stormbird, but this thread was far more useful to me by providing a scale comparison between the dragonhawk and the thunderhawk. Converted thunderhawks, here I come.

very cool, although from the HH novels i always got the impression that the stormbirds were massively scaled up aquila-esque craft. especially from the descriptions of them taking off from launch rails like the vipers on battlestar galactica :D

this bad boy is awesome though. kinda like the bastard child of a hunter-killer and the bugstomper from aliens

kinda like the bastard child of a hunter-killer and the bugstomper from aliens

Exactly what I thought jams! hunter killer ate all the pies!

Regading colour, I aint got a clue to be honest I suppose I better check before I get to that stage! Although if GW aint willing to cough up the marines for it and I have to dip into my own pocket its gonna be any colour I damn well like!

If I can wangle it probably go for a nuetral colour as this way I can use it with my own troops and it probably has more re-sale value if/when ever the road to ebay beckons ;)

Might still despense with that cannon on the front, round off the nose a little and use the two predator sponson turrets for the nose weapon yet, wont know 'till I get my hands on a kit. Something about that nose just doesn't sit right with me yet and I can't quite put my finger on it

I think i might have to.... ermm... steal this idea if you dont mind :D some great work here and ive always wondered what a Stormbird would like as a model as ive only ever seen that one image and wasnt much to work from or give an impression.

This is insane I love it. It almost needs to have the assault troops that jump out have matching turbine jets like the old packs had. This really is cool and good find on the art work.

Arsenal
07-07-2009, 12:30
Please paint it Ultrawings bulldog. Brilliant stuff as usual, I'd say yes, please add some 40k scale weaponry - some hunter killers, some space marine style searchlights, even some brass eagles. The whole build is brilliant, but my only concern is that you include some more Marine elements and use a marine colour scheme. Your last dropship was awesome but just didn't look 40k in the end.

BulldogUK
08-07-2009, 08:32
hmmm, comments taken on board. I may well try and hunt down some old style jump packs and Arsenal ignore the parts of the post below feck it I think I may go for Blue and assign it solely to the Crimson Ultrawings HUZZA!

Burnt a little midnight oil yesterday and got the detailing done, all ready for the colour now!
Those among you will be pleased to know that's its officially aerodynamic now as it has a pointy front bit :D

I’m actually quite happy with the front end (unusual for me) as it does look quite ‘beaky’ and I may well incorporate that into the paint scheme
The turret and nose gun are interchangeable and upgradeable to las cannons using those indispensable magnets.
Thankfully Rob takes my relaxed approach to 40k and doesn’t really care what colour it is so I may well go with a nice neutral grey as with the Storm eagle, this way I can use it with my troops and it probably has better re-sale value if the time ever comes.

I have an idea bouncing around my noggin to display it mid-low altitude approach with troops pouring from the doors while a rhino is dropping out the back deploying a drogue chute and retro thrusters. The troops will of course be a contingent of my Crimson Ultrawings! The blue will probably sit nicely with the colour of the Stormbird. Well, at least that how it all looks in my world, whether it ends up like that is a totally different matter…stay tuned!

Anyhow made up a webpage for the Stormbird, will add some fluff when I get the time Stormbird Troop Transport (http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/40k%20Stormbird%20Troop%20Transport.htm)

All the major detail work done, will add the pilots and cockpit detail ASAP
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/StormbirdWIP770910.jpg

The turret and nose mounts are interchangable thanks to trusty old magnets!

The last pic made me laugh slightly. that HUGE stormbird being held aloft by the weeny little flying base!!

Its looking reall really good, i think it will look immense when painted up! a major showpiece. could be made into a really good diorama, with assault guys leapin from the back or something.

I think its a big indicator as to the quality of your build that the part that seems to fit the least isnt a part that you made, but infact the GW predator turret.

No one told me about it!

Might throw a spanner in the works however as the Crimson Ultrawings will be popping out of its every hole screaming obscenities and gesticulating wildly. Not sure if they were 'officially' present at the original siege but its quite possible there was a news blackout. They can be quite crude :D

A great piece of work. As always one must say. At first I was not totally convinced of the stormbird. I thought it to be too big. But in the end, painted and all it is just amazing.
And nice to see the Tape-o-nought again. That idea might be stolen soon ;)

Awesome Stormbird. Looks even better then the Thunderhawk. Liked the memorial flight too.

The only thing I am not sure about is the assault marines. The air intakes on the jumppacks always suggested to me that they were some sort of jetpacks, not the rocket packs you have portrayed them as. And if you decides to stick with the rocket pack then give them to all the assault marines as it looks a bit odd as it is.

Hortwerth
24-07-2009, 18:39
I like the version with the jets better, the whole model with the marines jumping off it is pretty cartoon-like idea and the jets help to add to the heroic movement in it. It sort of begs to hum a suitably heroic nute just looking at this!

BulldogUK
24-07-2009, 22:31
The giant carrots were just not doing it for me. Blue/white I think is much more asthetically pleasing and keeps with the blue tones, watcha think? Think I will also just add them to the lower marines on the stack on the finished display to represent that split second freefall as they go overboard!

Bulldog, very original and impressive looking.
You have a good point about the fly carrots.
I didn't see it at first, but the grayish blue looks better.
The fiery colors took too much attention away from the model.

24-07-2009, 23:18
I do enjoy the jets, and I think the blue whitey look is a huge improvement. But are they made of anything flexible? I assume they're Resin, but if they're plastic, maybe consider bending them a slight bit to give the impression of directionality?

Incredibly cool otherwise though, awesome, awesome work per usual. There's really nothing else to say. Always exciting to see you update

Weaver, I did consider than but had to abandon the idea due to technical difficulties - Technically I just couldn't be bothered!

Anyhow, incremented the jets to a full burn on the lower models and added a few more cine effects. Just waiting on some more packs from ebay now which I will use as retro's on the Rhino being slung out the back!

Just found something wrong with the peice....

The stormbird seems to be firing its thrusters to either hover (although the angle is wrong for that) or its just slowing down by using downward trust. THe marines are jumping out directly under that huge engine and would actually be pushed downwards extremely fast by the engine exhaust, and would probably send the marine tumbling out of control or would see him smashed against the floor (from the height of the peice). :P

The hover fans are adjustable. Jonik, I fail to spot any 'constructive' content in that sentence? there has been constructive criticism on this thread which I have absorbed and acted on and I thank the many people who help to make things look more 'funkier'

It just always makes me chuckle to the bottom of my belly how some people in this hobby can point at you with one hand screaming UNREALISTIC while pushing along little plastic figures of futuristic make believe races with the other. Using tape measures and dice to represent a fictional battle which, in most part, takes place in your own head!

I mean, it's like saying manned flight is an impossibility that's why I tend to just remain a passenger rather than a pilot?!? :wtf:

It just really bains me that some people don't seem to realise that criticism raises on a scale in regards to quality of work.......if a mins got bad blends and mould lines then call it............if a scratch built model with mass intricate detail added to it,but has its movable fan engines (lovely touch btw!!!) pointing in a downward direction and comment that the marines would be blow away!!!!....don't call it....will make you look stupid.

I'll end with the point that the u.s marines must have a hell of a time when they deploy out of a blackhawk........downwash and all that lol!!!!!!

I mean, it's like saying manned flight is an impossibility that's why I tend to just remain a passenger rather than a pilot?!? :wtf:

Wastegate and the others among you who engage in the spirit of what this genre of wargaming should be, game on fellas, my hat comes off to you and may you forever tip those 6's on the bones :D

You are 100% right!

I love your Stormbird.

That is an awesome project, but I wonder if the original is inspired on hunter killers or on the aliens dropship.

Regardless, your work is amazing and it looks great.

The hover fans are adjustable. Sorry if I didn't quite put them at the right angle for the pics mate, I realise some people may struggle with the concept of these things not actually being REAL and find it hard to fill in the spaces with their ******* IMAGINATION, maybe if these things make you lose sleep you should go play something else <large rolling of eyes>

Alright sarcasam pipe down, just stating a ******** comment. The comment wasn't intended to put you on defensive or as a slur to your modelling. I love your work and i absolutely love the stormbird, great to see it come to life.

Plus with your comments on loosing sleep, i have far more pressing things to worry other than a mans models, being in the British Army i actually do have 'real' things to worry about.

Ya know, at first when you posted this up, I just wasn't feeling it at all. I more or less imagined the Stormbird as a larger Thunderhawk... I think. Seeing as GW hasn't really released any official pictures it's difficult to say.

However, after seeing it all done, I have to say I'm quite impressed. I've always been a fan of your pieces (eventhough I still haven't forgiven you for that Khorne Warhound fiasco with Odin!), and this is yet another extraordinary piece. At least someone took the initiative to put out a concept for this flying craft, so you've got one up on the creators ;-)

Been around the block a few times myself. Sarcasm comes as second nature, so use to analyzing all aspects of a situation before acting or re-acting that off the cuff comments generally rub me up the wrong way. Guess I just overdosed on the chocohoops that morning BP. ;)

Now let's stop pecking at each other, chill out and enjoy the hobby

Rustled up a a cheap rhino I bagged on ebay. Decided to keep this one a lot cleaner than the rest of the Crimson Ultra stuff as it's just about to be dropped and hasnt been involved in any combat as yet. Besides the Stormbird crew kept complaining about mud in their sandwiches, luckily a bunch of Eldar had just opened a 'hand tank wash' down the road and sergeant Samuel was able to nip down there before loading up :D

I was originally going to stick a drogue chute on this but I think 4 dispensible boosters (made from jet packs) might look more the part, probably put the rhino at an angle in the air with the boosters on different burn to compensate for the wobble. oops there I go again, imagination skipping....

No worries on the sarcasam matey, i am sure you get your fair share of people putting a downer on your work due to all sorts of things, jealously probably being the main one.

If that was aimed at me, your sorely mistaken. I enjoy the modelling side of things and the fluff. I do not actually play the game, although i have dabbled with it a few times.

Indeed brother, lets enjoy your outstanding work. (being yout thread i have to say that!) ;)

The Rhino looks ace matey, love the darker blue than normal Ultras you tend to favour. The detailing you seem to have achived on the Rhino, although simple gives the model a fantastic look!

The flying Rhinos dispaly team is here!

All done, Stormbird in the shop an finally out of my way. Looks quite cool in the context of a pitched battle

Lots of pictures over at Stormbird and the flying rhinos (that's not some sort of motown group) (http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/40k%20Stormbird%20Troop%20Transport.htm)

Few tasters below, thanks for all the input on this one. Another project removed the 'tick when done list' what next?!

You sah, are both a brilliant sculpter, and a man with far too much money - I meen seriously, taking a hacksaw to something that goes for around £200 these days? That takes balls, you sir, have balls,

Also, minor question, why no Marine Pilots?

Very good :d the finished thing looks brilliant.
The only thing I can nit pick with it, although it's a bit late now (damn the internet for not working!) is the direction of the disembarking assault marines. I would assume the ship to be flying forwards towards the enemy meaning as the assault marines disembark they would fall behind the stormbird.

Looks cool as hell anyway :D

Was my original plan but in my minds eye the retro's are movable and machine spirit controlled to compensate for any unwanted movement so I figured the chutes would be pointless!

It only cost me about 80 quid when I bought it so it ain't so bad. besides I stubbed my toes on that thing so many times it was more a stress relief exercise than anything else :D

Pilots are on a jobshare, never liked the whole marine pilots in full armour thing. They just look like they have been wedged in there with a shoe horn!

Or it's simply slowed to a speed where deploying the marines doesn't mean they end up careering down to Terra in two parts after being bisected by the tail fins!

Hi there, I am looking at making a stormbird and have always liked this thread. Are there any decent data sheets for running one of these fella's?

Marcus Septim
21-06-2012, 11:57
Yes,i was thinking the same

It would be just like flying under a giant kitchen stove!

And i looked around the model for possible descent points, well it would it either have to be where the back thrusters are (they move a bit higher)

Or put the descent hatches at the front

Looks fantastic, especially in your pitched battle scene. Might be a bit of a bumpy landing in that rhino though:D
