Hi there!

I'm red/winter, have been at this hobby off and on for quite a while. This is my second attempt at a painting log after I realised my first one (here) (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197404) was far too narrow a scope. I will be painting more than just daemonhunters and I'd like to see comments and criticism on everything. Look to see more Daemonhunters here, along with DIY Space Marines, Tyranids and LOTS of Chaos Space Marines. I may also post the occasional model I do as a one off for display etc. Might be Necron, Eldar, Ork, or even something fantasy (Ogre or vampire wink wink.)

So this will be my new place to post all my pictures. Anyone who has read my Daemonhunters thread has seen some of my Grey Knights, I have recently finished the base for my GK HQ choice and will be uploading pics once I get out my camera again.

Even more recently I have been painting a DIY chapter of space marines for an ongoing project a friend and I are working on. They are based on viking mythology (cliche I know, but hey vikings are metal!) We are undecided whether they will be a pure marines chapter or count as-space wolves. My buddy picked up the AOBR battle box (he plays orks so this works out for him) and gave me all the marines to paint up.

To get to the point. I snapped pics of the first shot I took at freehanding the chapter symbol on the shoulderpad and I'm looking for C&C. The symbol is supposed to be a Gold Valknut (http://c2.api.ning.com/files/2rCtUq5caCW6YXbmzZWSPKHNe9jCOf9ez7IQw51xlUJoTKk*Xs AX9RrmGkODCIZ0pVjR8hKkBPo0j6aCRkRZ2bjWYM9qCWwo/675pxValknutSymboltriquetra.svg.png) with a black outline. I think it turned out ok but might need a little something to pop. Without further adieu, here's the pic:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2609/3692667100_5f9aebf2bc.jpg

The marine is clearly still a WIP. He'll end up looking more or less like this dude (my first prototype for the paint scheme):

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3190/2574396052_67ae37f5d6_o.jpg

The changes that we have decided on are:
-right shoulderpad the regular armor green rather than the squad badge color.
-helmet of RAF troops will be silver.
-helmet of special/heavy weapons is silver with a gold/bronze mohawk.
-helmet of seargent and higher rank is gold.
-right shoulderpad trim is black (for the 5th company)
-(undecided) the squad badge will remain on the right kneepad

Let me know what you think about the chapter icon. Next to come will be WIP pics of the first squad of these guys and my finished GK HQ base.

Good color scheme.
I like the Valknut symbol. Maybe it needs a lighter back ground color?

Thanks Tommygun. I took your advice and tried a lighter color, straight codex grey this time. The contrast is far more apparent in this pic than in real life, I dont think this is going to be it. I'm going to try the red foundation pait next and see how that goes. I'm doing these icons relatively quickly, once I decide on a set of colors I'll be doing them neater.

For this update pics of:
-Valknut icon v2.0 (with first attempt for comparison.)
-Finished Grey Knight HQ base (just needs to be touched up around the edges with chaos black.

I think I might wash/drybrush the sand a bit to make it pop more. Otherwise I'm fairly happy with the result (and it only took one repaint!) The first time I tried it the spiderlines in the marble were waaaaay to pronounced.

C&C welcome as always. Once I finish this squad of marines I'm going to start work on a Ghazghkull (sp) conversion for a friend for his birthday. Should be interesting as this will be the first non power armoured model I've painted in quite some time.

Doublepost here with 2 more attempts at finding nice contrast for the Icon.

First I tried the gold on a red outline. works ok against the green but the gold doesnt really stand out at all.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3088/3699226958_5afec18050_o.jpg

Turns out it's the gold that is having a hard time showing. I think I'm going to go with this alternative:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3491/3698416453_6cb1d9e798_o.jpg

I like the way the red and black look on the models so I'm going to go ahead and do the squad this way.

I think your right. The middle one is the best choice.

Well, squad's basically done to tabletop quality (which is all they're getting :p.)

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2552/3711575995_728b6e25ae_o.jpg

I'll finish the captain's head, eye lenses and basing tomorrow (or the next chance i get.) But I also started the Ghazghkull conversion today as I didn't have the color I wanted to base with. My friend picked up this model second hand, so the current paint is neither of ours. I'll probably take simplegreen to it before I start greenstuffing depending on how thick the current layer is.

Here's all the bits layed out in their glory (I hacked his legs off at the knees and the arms off at the elbows.)

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2606/3711576185_f7c96e33c9_o.jpg

I started by drilling pin holes in all the joints and supergluing pins in one side to be positioned later. I got the legs back together:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2657/3711576297_f07fe747d3_o.jpg

And then realised as I was uploading the picture that I got the legs switched up, I'm going to have to rip em off and swap em again. I cut them off with the intention of repositioning/extending them slightly and I've managed to only extend here.

One more shot of those marines on the way when they are done and more Ghazghkull to follow!

Looking good so far. Will be especially interested to see more GK and nids.
I think the best way to make those shoulderpads "pop" would be to actually use a different base colour than green for the shoulder pads. I'm thinking something like white or bone, with the black and gold symbol, could work.
Anyone, just an idea.
Good luck

looks good so far, can we see more of the GK?

red/winter
13-07-2009, 17:58
@ReclecteR: That's a good idea for the shoulderpads. I will try it with my next squad of guys and see how that turns out.

More of my Grey Knights can be seen in my other project log (here) (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197404). And of course, that is one of my main armies so there will be more to come soon enough! Working on the bases and Ghazghkull today, will post and update later.

Nice start on Ghaz, nice legs!!!
I like that Chapter symbol, looks pretty cool. Have you named the chapter yet?

ElTanko

red/winter
14-07-2009, 06:14
Well eltanko, we haven't decided on a name yet. Some ideas came up to name it after something from norse mythology. Nothing has been decided on yet but the strongest names we've had so far are simply "The Aesir" or something based around the word ragnarok. This being derrived from two words (the etymology is far more involved than this) basically ragna essentially meaning the gods and rok meaning fate or destiny, so literally: the fate of the gods or "godfate.") Things like "Sons of the ragna" have been suggested but we haven't settled on anything yet.

I woke up today with the intention of painting and flocking all the marine bases and finishing pinning Ghaz together. I figured I would start with Ghaz since I'm quite eager to see where this project takes me. I set about drilling and gluing in pins and then this happened:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2584/3719678374_de73f36a23_o.jpg

Needless to say I was FAR from amused. Not having any replacement drill bits on hand I finished what I could of the modelling for the day, decided I was just not destined to do anything today and went over to a friend's place. I ended up going to the theatre to see Drag Me To Hell, which was awesome by the way, came back here and figured I'd at least keep my promise of showing my progress.

So nothing to say for the marines but:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3441/3718863963_db2462efe6_o.jpg

The legs are back together the way I intended.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2534/3719678208_e4a342a7e0_o.jpg

Both upper arms have been pinned to the torso and the pins for the forearms are glued in and ready to go.

Also his victim has been selected:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2550/3719678600_d10806a914_o.jpg

An extra assault marine body I had lying around from the old days (and some bits from various SM kits.) Feel free to suggest your least favorite chapters for this guy to be painted up. So far im thinking Salamanders or Black Templar because that's who Ghaz a: fought in the third armageddon war and b: who is chasing him around the galaxy now (but I'm not attached to either of these ideas.)

Anywho, I'll be doing groundskeeping all day tomorrow but I should be home for some painting during the evening. Hope to pick up a replacement bit or drill tomorrow on the way home.

You have mould lines on the helmets which are really distracting from the beauty of your free-hand work. I'd say get yourself a nail file and get rid of those mould lines before you go any further!

Also, love the color scheme. Red and green isn't only for Christmas! =)

Colonel Marbi Chora

So far so good! The only things that bring them down are the mold lines. But other than that, pretty good!

red/winter
15-07-2009, 00:04
Well I'm home and I've got me a new pin vice with 6 replacement drillbits just in case. Should be good to go to town on Ghaz now.

Re: Mould lines.
Yes, I'm aware this squad is still full of them, I wasn't planning on cleaning these guys too heavy to begin with as they are just the AOBR dudes and my "filler" army. That said, now that you have mentioned it I'm sure my professional side will kick in and convince me to clean em. Like a mosquito you just can't ignore it'll probably bug me now :p.

Thanks for the C&C keep it coming!

red/winter
15-07-2009, 04:55
Alright, I succumbed to the cleaning... Also got the dudes based:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3441/3722792812_80fe7f781b_o.jpg

Close-up (some of the bases were still wet when I took this.)

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2425/3722792964_d181b67234_o.jpg

Decided that there is little enough paint already on Ghaz so I won't be simplegreening him before the green stuff.

Finished pinning and started the greenstuffing. Finished the arms/legs:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3464/3722792468_790eb2a67b_o.jpghttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2458/3721980513_ebe863a36d_o.jpg

Now I have to resculpt the mechanics of the mega armor (pistons wires etc.) But that's for tomorrow along with the rest of the touchups on the marines.

red/winter
20-07-2009, 17:47
Figured it's time for another update on my progress!

Ghazghkull: Finished rebuilding the legs, got the new pistons and wires on the arms. Next step is to smooth out the piston joins with some greenstuff, attach his head to the torso and the torso to the legs then it should be ready for some paint.

Painting: Finished the squad of marines (no pic, just painted the eyelenses red and finished the seargeant's head.) However I think my buddy and I have decided to go with Imperial Fists so my next marines will likely be yellow. I've finished the clean job on a test Khorne Berzerker and I'll be painting up a squad of them to a similar state before I apply battle damage, weathering and chipped paint. Pic of the test model and the first four WIP.

Once I finish the berzerkers I will paint another 5man squad of Grey Knights, I spend alot of time on my grey Knights so I'm looking forward to it.

Ghazghkull:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2659/3739707058_279b9fae3a_o.jpg

Berzerkers:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2642/3739707568_bfecf9bb76_o.jpg

The one on the far right in the last pic is going to be the squad's Skull Champion. I think I will do a brown or black robe with a freehanded Khorne Symbol in red and gold stitching.

red/winter
24-07-2009, 09:42
Small update, no pics today though. I will have some tomorrow i promise!

Painting: First Imperial Fist test model: Finished the armor color and I'm pretty happy with it, I haven't decided if I will paint the eye lenses purple or blue yet. I am leaning towards blue.
Khorne Berzerkers: Continuing work on the next 4 models of the squad including the skull champion. I think the SC's robe is going to end up being red with a black khorne symbol.
Ghazghkull: Head attached. Progress here is slow as I've been distracted by dreams of yellow!

I played my first 500 point game with my Grey Knights today, it was an annihilation/spearhead match. I ended up with 3 KP v 1 KP so a victory. My stormtrooper's rhino was a huge dick to my opponent's (space marine firing line with scout snipers and a lasdread for support) LOS the entire match. Stormtroopers did their job as tank hunters killing the dread on the third turn (i only lost one GK to it!) but then proceeded to get mowed down by the bolter shells. I'm going to have to trust in the dice more, my Brother Captain didn't do much except look awesome for most of the match. I don't like 1 wound HQ's.

Pics tomorrow.

Thanks,
RW

Nice work, on both the painting and the game. I'll be interested to see that IG, as well as your GK if you have any updates from the last thread.

Sorry for the long gap between updates. I've been busy converting the masses. Pulled two friends (back) into the game gaining my gaming group one Tau player and one Necron.

This will be a double post one for my Chaos progress and one for my Space Marines. I've finished up a 5man squad of berzerkers which I will be expanding soon enough. As well I've finished a couple test models for my Imperial Fists. I'll be using the DIY Chapter above as count as Legion of the Damned if they ever get fielded and they will simply be known as The Lost.

On to the pics!

Update Pt 2 Imperial Fists

I'm having alot of fun with these guys. Admittedly I have shyed away from painting yellow until now though I have always loved the imperial fists fluff.

First test model.

The middle one is the only one basically finished. I just need to bronze up a couple skulls on him. I'm really happy how the eye lenses turned out and I'm loving the color scheme. 3rd Company Imperial Fists here we go!

As always Comments and Criticism more than welcome.

Two more for the first squad. I think with the next one I will darken the shadows further. A little more blacklined i think would be better.
