Aloha,
Hi. I am making an Imperial guard called the 452nd Fire Dragoons, based off of the Austrian army and Dragoon soldiers. I need suggestions for leader names and a homeworld name, preferably nothing really similar to Austria, unless it's very good.

Well, there seem to be a few general types; Two major categories are:

1) Those that sound like hellish quasibiblical references or undesirable apocalyptic events, often vaguely Latin-ish in tone:

Purgatus Excretus
Doom
Apocalypticogeddon
Rectum Diabolus
Penetro Infortunatus

2) And those more in the vein of traditional sci-fi that sound eerily like pharmaceuticals advertised on TV:

Actin VII
Peritussol
Perineum XII
Viagra III
Mycoxafloppin IV

Mycoxafloppin IV

oh you

If making up a location I use the following method:

1) spin globe
2) put down finger
3) pull up google map of country
4) select random town name

ta dah!

or I flip through the bible until I find an interesting place name and use that.

If you want to roll a D10 and slap the number on the end.

Interesting, do you have a project log? You could use some Austrian military leader's name. Radetzky, for instance, would give your army a theme song too. ;) Schwejk is also a possibility and if you don't choose it for your regiment's name, make sure you have a guardsman called Schwejk in your army.

I tried your method on Google Earth and ended up Bahr Al Gazal VI in Darfur. :/ Maybe I need to try again?

I went with just changing the spelling of a town. Kettering became Quetterin.

Well you have to do some smoothing

why not Gazal VI ? that sounds like a reasonable planet

I shamelessly steal names from both fiction and real world history. My Guard homeworld is a planet called Ferros, with a mix of British and Prussian cultural influences.

As for your names, if you were using it in an English-speaking environment I would go for the native version of 'Austria' and call the world 'Österreich'. However if you're actually Austrian that naturally wouldn't be appropriate. Other than that I'd take names from the Battle of Vienna. Perhaps 'Sobieski' in honour of the King of Poland riding at the tip of the largest cavalry charge in history to rout the Turkish army, or 'Starrenburg', a slight modification of 'Starhemburg', the commander of the Viennese garrison who refused the initial demand for surrender.

For Leader/Officer names, go to google, and type in German names, or German Boy names. I only know three names, one of which is a nickname. The names I know are:

1) Dietrich
2) Franz
3) (This is the nickname) Dieter (Short for the first name on the list)

For a homeworld you could choose Noricum (the Roman province where Austria is today) or Vindobona (the Roman name for Vienna)

For a leader make sure you use Graf (Count) as a name or rank/title

Aloha,
Thanks for all the replies guys! Great suggestions, even the viagra one hehe. But I've decided on naming my planet Noricanum Prime, home to the fierce 252nd Fire Dragoons. For a commander i'll name him Graf Wolfgang Sosbeski.

So what will your Guard uniform be?
Are you using the classic white uniform of the Austrian empire or the later feld-grau?

Aloha,
The color scheme is actually red armor and khaki clothes. I didn't want to do Austria theme too much.
