View Full Version : I miss WOTR.....

Hello all,
Sadly for the last 3-4 weeks all of our WOTR players have vanished! I'm missing the game more than I thought - as I'm an out & out fantasy player. Granted theres a wicked Mighty Empries campaign running for the next 4 weeks but poor Gimli and his dwarvish chums!!!!
Why is this? It's a great system, excellent ebb and flow of actual battlelines clashing against each other - but were have the WOTR players gone!
Even these threads - we had an excellent period were every other day there was a hot debate raging on about some rules, army selections, etc, but recently it's like everyones gone underground!!
Come back - all is forgiven, but I needs me WOTR associates back!
Has anyone else felt this in their respective gaming groups?

Its summer. Its a new game so the new smell has worn off for some people.

But I feel your pain. About the same time that WotR hit the streets, warmachine has released their MII beta rules so everyone has been playing the hell out of that lately. I cant say I blame them as its brought back the people who already own models for that game so its just a renewed interest that is easier for them to get into.

Just keep at it. People will come back, new players will start. Its a great game people just have to see it being played so do your best to keep interest alive.

The honeymoon period is over. And people are starting to see it in a less faboral light. Primarally how buggy it still is. I think if WOTR does continue to decline then it may go under into the specialist games but i doupt it. It should stay around but people havce lost there appel for it resntly. I never really got into it. I play every now and then but I prefure SBG as it's not like any other game i have played wheres wOTR is very simular to Warhammer and when push comes to shove Warhammmer has been around for so long for a reason.

I've had a good few games, which gave me a use for the LotR figures that I had lying around the house from the SBG. But now I've worked out how it all goes and found a crap ton of bugs (:(... hey, what did I expect - Mat W wrote the book...!), the buzz has worn off our group have put it back on the shelf. It'll no doubt reappear at some point, but for now we've moved on to other games. We've been playing BFG and Uncharted Seas mainly recently. We're also planning for some WWII action later in the summer.

Yeah, totally feeling this too. Lots of guys at my LGS have armies, but WotR "night" is on Tuesdays along with 40K and they're mostly 40Ker's, and they end up playing 40K instead of WotR on Tuesdays. Force of habit, comfort zone, etc. For my part, it's been easier to go home after work, I don't know the 40K crowd very well and I dislike playing with unpainted models. But I'm steadily painting my Gondorians and have a guy lined up to paint my Rohirrim.

Like any new endeavor, overcoming inertia to achieve "lift off" requires a bit of extra energy. The guy on point at the LGS has had other store-related responsibilities to manage.

I've decided to be that spark and provide that extra energy by setting up some games, writing up the battle reports, proposing scenarios etc.

Everyone is still positive on the game itself, they've just been busy with other things (e.g. preparing for 40K/WFB/historical tourneys and cons, vacations, etc.)

I think it takes time and a bit of enthusiastic persistance.

yah i looked over my dwarven throng today and they brought a tear to my eye!
im going to do the same, get them painted up properly and start ranting about how great WOTR is - hopefully we can bring some people back in the fold!

I am hoping that the summer events at my local GW will get new opponents for me, as I haven't played in over a month, and if I counted all of the WOTR players on one hand, I would end up with a spare finger or two.

I just need to get the staff to build up their armies, learn the rules and actually play some games. Otherwise, I have no hope of getting an opponent.

Exactly what's keeping me from expanding my LOTR collection to the point that I could field an army. Sad really, but I saw this coming.

WOTR? I miss SBG!

Since GW released WOTR I've not seen a single person playing SBG anymore, which is a shame as, personally, I find SBG to be infinitely more fun than WFB with new rules and LOTR miniatures.

I'm glad atleast 1 other person feels the same as me. I played SBG becuse it wasn't like any other game as each modal acted like an individual rahter than a squad or unit that once so many started to die the rest would run and which in reality that would not often happen. They would fight until there was no hope and then flee. Not to mention WOTR is still very buggy whilst SBG has been proven to work and work well.

I'm starting to feel the same way a bit, I like war of the ring, its fun and brutal, but so many unclear bits in the rules, I'm always looking stuff up, I always good at remebering stats for any of the 4 games I play but can't seem to do the same for wotr

while I have enjoyed every game of wotr I have had, I think I find LOTR more pure fun

It really is funner...if that even a word. I have had to rarley had to look up rules and I can remmebrt the wound table of the top of my head purley by my formula.

Strength = Defence = 4+
+1 when defence goes up by 1 and then plus 1 for each 2 there after. -1 if strength is 2 higher than defence.Once upper 6 is reached each 1 it goes up add a 4+ ontop (6/4, 6/5, 6/6)
An now i look like a complete nerd.:eyebrows:
