Just to clarify: Empire archers not upgraded to huntsmen are skirmishers, just without the "scouts" rule? It rather blatantly says so on pg. 37, it just came as a surprise as I've seen literally about 10 people playing them the wrong way...

I would have to agree. In all 3 sections of the Empire book they have the skirmisher and militia special rules. How are people missing this?

Skirmishing is one of the best reasons to take Archers in an Empire army. Why would one bother with them over handguns or crossbows if you played them as non-skirmishers? Move and Fire just isn't worth the firepower loss if you don't have the movement rules of skirmishers.

Agreed. 5-man detachments of archers are incredible for skirmishy deflection.

I'd never take them as 10-man units though, S3 shooting at 8pts/model isn't worth the skirmish rules when crossbows and handguns are the same price and can take detachments to boot.

Apparently because they skirmish. ...honestly this still doesn't really justify their points to me, but it's an obvious improvement.

Bretonnians Archers are 6 points with long bows and skirmish; though less leadership and weapon skill.

Skirmishing Bretonnian archers are actually 7 pts per model, and you can only take one unit of them.

Yes it is, they can be a real pain to get at with all those knights in the way.

Actually they can't have stakes if they skirmish. I find them to be very good "Mobile Surrogate Missile Absorbers."

It depends on the day. Sometimes peasants, sometimes grail knights, sometimes lords riding around on their pegasus. I find basing their sacrifice on my mood gives them incentive to perform better in game and, consequently, not die.
