View Full Version : OJ, Bob and Rubicon's tale of 3 painters....

only joking...
26-07-2009, 19:01
Hey there, bob_the_small, Rubicon and myself have finally begun our project log which will feature numerous 40k armies, from Salamanders to Eldar and Space Wolves to Cadians. Hopefully this log will show our progress as painters, modellers and gamers over the coming months.

The armies I will try to stay focussed on are:

Salamanders
Blood Axe orks
And a hell of a lot of Guard regiments (just couldn't stick to one could I :D)

Anywho, enough talking here are the pics. Enjoy!

This is my Salamander dreadnought, still WIP.

Here are the Praetorians, made using Wargames Factory British zulu firing line bodies. They are by no means perfect, but I simply don't have the money to spend 4 per Praetorian on ebay :(

I like your style, its really effective. If there is anything I can suggest it would be to clean up the freehand a bit, especially the checkers. Just thin the black a little and clean it up nice :)

Flames are very, very hard to freehand at first. Try to not make them taper to a point as much as they should flare out and then come back together

the praetorians are perfect :)

Thanks for the advice on the flames, I am struggling to get them to a TT standard at the moment, but I guess I will have to keep practising. Your log is seriously inspiring FearFrost. :)

That is about the ratio, alas. Really impressive painting. I was particularly impressed at the Praetorians, but it must be a massive amount of work into each mini...worth it for an entire army?

The new dreadnoughts look amazing, and your paintjob brings out the best of them.

Yeah would love CC...

On the Praetorian front, it does take me about 2+ hours to make a simple sqquad of five. However my GS skills are definately improving with every attempt. I am not sure if I will do a full army though, as it looks as if Nick (for anyone reading this is our local GW manager) won't let me use them in store :cries:

Could you PM me the pics of the new dreads, thanks shavvy

Edit- 3 comments, come on guys really want some feedback...

You have a good eye for detail OJ. Perhaps you could thin your paints a little more when highlighting. Your weathering is nice and harsh.

By the way, the link in your sig is broken. There seems to be some extra junk inside angled brackets after the word "forums".

Lovely painting. My suggestion is to drill out the gun barrels ;)

Keep up the good work.

only joking...
27-07-2009, 11:22
Hey again everyone.

@Maharajah, I hope for my sakes (:D) you are referring to the paint job on the Dread, it is really thick (Bob has nagged me to death about it :p) as it used to be an Ultramarine.

@TheDarkDuke I am really bad at drilling holes, I'll see if I can get Bob to do it for me...

Blood Axe Orks

I am only 15, and I still paint with a sort of cartoon style, with these guys I wanted to keep that but with some toning down. Big thanks to El Diablo (not sure if he is still on Warseer) whose orks are the inspiration to mine. Everything here has been done quickly in order to achieve a TT standard. Anyway enough yacking here are the pics:

Very, very, nice Praetorian's, easily the best looking ones I've seen using the Wargames Factory plastics upto now, possibly the arms could be filed down a little more to they don't end up being quite so wide but excellent stuff none the less!

only joking...
27-07-2009, 13:18
Thanks very much col.Gravis, they were the first batch and as such suffer from a bit of experimentation :p

I am busy working on a second squad, command section and mortar squad.

Re- only joking

Looking good so far, a few of bits of advice I could give is to drill the barrels of weapons as it gives a more realistic look and you could use a fine artist pen to outline the checkers. Feel free to ask about anything else you like the look of on my log.:)

QFT. Like the gold on the chappy.

Just went through the log, some lovely stuff in here.

@OJ: Love the abbreviation, but don't go and start killing people; that's only wise if you have the money for killer lawyers. :p
If you'd drill some holes (:D) or let bob drill for you (), that would be a nice addition to your lovely painting.
Love the orks, I'm a fan of cartoony paintjobs.
The praetorians look better than the GW minis, at least what I can remember of them. I didn't check if my memory fails me though, didn't want to (possibly) ruin the compliment.
And the glass effects on the Baneblade are damn sweet. Really, really love them. They are great, awesome and beautiful. :) (Tank doesn't look bad either so far)

@bob: Eldar tanks look nice, no shame if you let OJ help you. When I started I had a mentoring friend too. The blue looks smooth.
Are you starting lizzies sometime soon? I think I saw a Stegadon.

@Rubicon: Like your darker painting style.

So, I hope I didn't jumble anything up. It's 5 o'clock in the morning here, and I was to lazy to check everything. Basically all that I wrote is undistilled pure honesty.
Keep it up guys!

Sorry for deleting all the recent posts, I am not sure I am cut out for all this project log stuff so I am gunna call it a day for now I guess there is just not that much interest in it... :(

MAJOR EDIT: I am really sorry about this above post its mainly a big cry baby mood swing because I was unhappy with the way my Sallies were going. Well they have been put on the shelf indefinately now so I can faocus on my guard and orks. Big apologies to Rubicon and Bob I am truly sorry for being a selfish little git.

Everything here looks awesome. Only, Bob and Rubicon, I would genuinely give you a cookie if you lived nearby or we had a decent postal service.

edit; I posted before reading the above post. Once again I am make to look the fool. Curses!

Remember, though, not everyone posts to say well done. Some merely gorge themselves upon the visuals then leave without paying the bill, as it were.

Praettorians look fantastic. I don't remember the last time I saw painted fingernails. Love the weathering on the lasguns and Russ, too.

What's going on with the Praet arms? Are they just hand swaps, or have you cut down the Cadian shoulderpads?

Thanks very much, the arms are the usual cadian arms with the shoulder pads clipped off and filed down smoothly. I then usually add a few folds in the cloth with GS and add the epaulettes soon after...

The fingernails were done just to annoy bob :D

Just a quick update from me, i'm in the middle of building a game board so there won't be many Guard/40k specific things from me in the next few days. Might post the board when it's done though (if there is any interest in such things!)

Wow Dave a board! Sounds great, had it got any particular theme and does it use GW products.

Nah thats not a board (:() just one of the old citadel battle mats, the cottages are great I got them from a company called battlescape (IIRC) and its good too be back...

An incomplete summary of commendable features in OJ, Bob and Rubicon's Log
Compiled by Raka.

-Weathering and freehand on the salamander's dread.
-The little purple light above the purity seal on salamander dread.
-Use of checkers on the salamander kneepads.
-Heavily worn bolters, minimal blood splatter
-Blood splatter OVER checkers... oh HELL YES!
-Consistant use of bright colours + understated bases on praetorians.
-Blending on the demon herald.

-Metal on the orks (turquoisey colour rusting)
-Eldar Vehicles are very smoothly painted.

-The cookie the size of a pizza.
-Round shield on a spacewolf
-Wear and tear on the SW sergeant with powerfist.

-Face details + fingernails on the grim looking praetorian closeup

^.^ THERE WE GO, and a pleasure to read your log once again. I like what is happening here: ) Get thee to practising!

only joking...

Wow thanks Raka, thats a good summary so far :p

And checkers + blood is easily the most fun I have painting ever! I should have another Russ done before the end of the day and I think Bob has painted some striking scorpions so those should be up soon as well :)

I do like that green. It looks nicely beetle-shell-like. And I must commend OJ on his shoulder-pad removal; I've found trying to remove those is a fair comparison to trying to get my cat to let me take her temperature. Hint; the thermometer does not go in her mouth.

OJ, I really like the way you paint your viechles, They have a really good "Just finished a fight" look to them which I think looks really good.

Also, the Preatorians look really good, I as well dont remember the last time I saw a good set of them.

Also have to say, the SW Sergent with Power Fist.. Wow.. that is a crazy amount of battle damage.. That is why you dont stand infront of a squad of Loota's!!

Eldar are comming along really nicely and look forward to seeing more from that side of things as well. I have been a secret eldar lover for a long time, so its always cool to see project logs with them.

Lastly, I hope you bring the Salamanders back.. they were looking really good. Your painting style is very solid and the skin and the way you paint gore is very well done.

Thanks very much, I'm glad you like the tanks, the fresh battle look is exactly what I wanted to achieve. I am to have a full armoured company and the baneblade done by this time next year at the latest...

I still have my doubts about the Sallies although it is a bit late now seeing as I have painted about 30+ mini's :D They may return at some point but I really need to focus if I ever want to finish an army. So guard from now onwards (well maybe some orks ).

The armour as of yeterday (have done a lot more on the baneblade since then):

Thats quite an interesting analogy, now that i look at it, it does actually! thanks for the comment!

I too really love the green on those eldar... what is the recipe for it?
I kinda wanna steal it for my Dark Angels, which i'm in the process of stripping and repainting right now...

Well, it's :

Basecoat Orkhide shade
Drybrush Snot green
wash thraka Green
Drybrush goblin green
Wash thraka green
drybrush/highlight 60/40 mix of snot green and scorpion green and thats it!

Seems my green is a hit!

I also like the green on the scorpions - it's very vivid.

thankyou Dezmord, I must say that means a lot from you, considering your necrons are the rule of cool!

So, enough chit chat and thanking! Its time for an update! I cannot stick to one thing when painting, I will paint a part of it, then move on to a completely new set of models. So, in true me fashion here are my very WIP fire dragons... the bone and red are both tests so C&C is greatly welcomed (especially criticisms)

The red is actually excellent bob, the highlighting needs a little clean up but that is a minor thingy. The white helms are good as well.

I see you two have been busy.
@OJ: Tanks look sweet! Love the battle-worn look.
@Bob: Striking Scorpions look good so far, you have a nice green tone there.
Fire dragons look promising too. Nice red, but with the bone color, I think the phase before you go white on them looks even better. Just keep 'em like this.
I could of course be wrong, as I didn't see a white bone head (:p) with the finished red. So for now keep it up! :) You too, OJ!

I really enjoy looking at Pblogs and seeing how people finish off their models. [not being a very good painter myself]. The praetorians are simply superb! The weathering on that SW just made me gag. It is awesome! I really need to try and spend some time practicing that kind of 'hammered' finish on my marines, they look as if they have just walked of the forgeworld after picking up brand new kit. Nothing says hard days night like a little metal showing through!

I like the heavy weathering on the armour as well. Just one comment, perhaps concentrate the weathering on the edges more and the battle damage on the flatter inner areas a little more. Also as mentioned previously drilling out the gun barrels and spending a little more time on getting rid of mould lines and joints [ork biker wheels for eg] will really bring the models up to the level of the painting.

Excellent! I will be following this Pblog with interest.

only joking...
03-08-2009, 12:26
Thanks Gargobot & Thoughtfox for the excellent suggestions.

I know what you mean about the armour fox, and with my latest tanks I have been aiming to do just that(e.g getting the weathering on the edges). As for mold lines its just a case of me missing them as I try hard to catch 'em all (pokemon :D). Oh and with gun barrels, I am really awful at drilling them so I'll have to paint something for bob if I want them done :p
