...not literally, duh.

Hello and welcome to what might be a project log, but more likely is just a showcase thread, as the army is now well on its way to being finished - and I mean "showcase" in terms of "showing what I have done", not nearly "look at the quality!".

Anyhow, here it is. Enjoy!

Cool stuff! I like the tiles on the base. I know you're already done but maybe it would look good with some old dried blood on them? Also cool use of the wood elf dragon, great sculpt. (That is the wood elf dragon right?)

Sully

Right. And it is a great sculpt, that's why I chose it I guess.;)

Thanks for the comment, more (much more) photos are coming, they've been awaiting moderator approval for some hours now.

woah that dragon is great...
i think its one of the most mythical apearances GW gave to a dragon so far....and the painting scheme you did on there is awesome..really good job...

Sully

I know they don't. Whilst making these I suddenly found myself with four female cuirasses being the only ones I'd got. I'm not happy with them at all; marked for redoing sometime in the future.:(

I'm glad somebody pointed that out. What do you folks think of these (http://www.bitspudlo.com/images/products/HF/HFL/104.jpg)?

In making some Dark Elf Repeater Crossbowmen a while back I simply shaved the necessary parts off with a hobby knife to make the chest sections of the models appear male.

Sully
31-07-2009, 10:31
New stuff!

Well, the crossbowmen are not new, I painted them a while ago, just somehow forgot to actually take pictures. As you can see the three crossbow units in this army have a common theme. The last bit is of course a filler.

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Crossbowmen/th_CrossbowmenB01.jpg (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Crossbowmen/CrossbowmenB01.jpg)
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Crossbowmen/th_CrossbowmenB02.jpg (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Crossbowmen/CrossbowmenB02.jpg) http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Crossbowmen/th_CrossbowmenB03.jpg (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Crossbowmen/CrossbowmenB03.jpg) http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Crossbowmen/th_CrossbowmenB04.jpg (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Crossbowmen/CrossbowmenB04.jpg)

And the really new stuff - chariots:

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/th_Chariots01.jpg (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/Chariots01.jpg) http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/th_Chariots04.jpg (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/Chariots04.jpg)

Sully
31-07-2009, 10:42
Now, I put more thought into these that could be ascertained form the pictures. I've always imagined chariots to be mark of prestige for the druchii, something not possessed by your average naggarothi next door. No, these are a luxury. Cold ones are too in fact. The army book fluff reinforced my view.

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/th_Chariots06.jpg (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/Chariots06.jpg) http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/th_Chariots07.jpg (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/Chariots07.jpg) http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/th_Chariots08.jpg (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/Chariots08.jpg)

Hence, I imagined the crew to be composed of a minor noble, not yet powerful enough to command his own troops, but definitely on his way to greatness (or maybe a son or daughter of one of the noble houses, not yet experienced enough to be trusted with command?) plus the chariot driver - definitely not anybody ennobled. A servant, maybe even a slave? Well, you get the point I hope.

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/th_Chariots02.jpg (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/Chariots02.jpg) http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/th_Chariots03.jpg (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/Chariots03.jpg) http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/th_Chariots05.jpg (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o195/LukaszCyranski/Dark%20Elves/Chariots/Chariots05.jpg)

So, if the driver is somebody who does physical work on a daily basis (someone has to tend to the cold ones and the machine, right?) he will surely be spending lots of time outdoors and that means a tan (I'm basing this army somewhere on the Copper Desert in Lustria - hence the reddish dirt on the bases). And that is wht I was trying to accomplish on the skins of the drivers. As you see I failed utterly, but I'll lave the comments to you folks and your tender mercies.

I like the lighter color to the Dark Elves, its something most modelers do not manage to do as successfully as you did.

Subbed!

With mine, I painted them far darker than normal, using a loaded brush for the black washes.

Thanks for all replies and kind words. Myself, I'm not satisfied with my level of work.

Tensions - it's not true yellow, it's more beige. The basecoat is bubonic brown mixed halfway with bleached bone. But I know it doesn't show on the photos.

Hereticlee - that's what I was after. Aren't you folks sick of purple druchii? I sure as hell am. And what does "subbed" mean (sorry, old fart here)?

Harry - thanks. Dark riders are actually my least favorite, but I'm glad someone likes them.

Nephilim of Sin - thank you. I'm already doing some work on my Tale entries, we'll see where it goes. But I have some new ideas...

Hammer49 - thank you. You'll have to wait a bit though, right now it's just my greenskins for the Tale I work on.

Thurizdan - read through your log, why in the world don't you like the original manticore's head? I think it's perfect!;)

Durloth - it's just a brass rod from GF9 pinning set. I got some brass rods from my own country (in metric system) which I planned to use, but once I somehow came into possession of the GF9 drill-and-rods set (which is in imperial measurement system, therefore not compatible with what I'd got previously) I went for it. Along with the rods it also ships with drill bits, so there's really no difficulty in usage.

Nice work dude. Love your colour scheme and your basing. How did you realised the basing especially the stones?

Sully

Simple vacuform stones, undercoated white, painted light grey, washed black. That's all there is to it.

Finished the Cauldron of Blood. I have no idea why the skin on the slaves looks so terrible in the pictures, in reality it is much better.

You've done a great job on the stones, the wooden carriage and the black hair on the elves which is really hard to do. Only thing that I think could be improved is the brass parts of the cauldron/carriage, they look a bit flat. Could just be the lighting. Great job though, I wish I'd thought to put my cauldron on wheels.

You'll find that you won't be casting the KB or extra Attack blessings very often when you field Hellebron, she needs the 5+ Ward to survive a turn of shooting before getting into the fray. It is, however, hilarious when the Manticore gets shot dead but Hellebron goes on to massacre two units of knights on her own.

So what's next?

The colour scheme is a bit different, but I like it. The painting itself is great, I like the crossbowmen conversions. The dragon is really good as well.

Very inspiring dark elf army. I love your conversions - very simple but really effective. You've got a knack for choosing the right parts to combine to make a cool new model. The high elf parts work perfectly and the harpies are just inspired. Great colour scheme too.

what are the harpies made from?

Sully

They're quite simple really, ghoul bodies and legs, daemonette heads and CSM possessed wings. That's all.

Oh do you? You'll be pleased to know I'm almost done with them then. I've had enough of them for a long time.

Here is a WIP of... a hydra?

I was impressed by the harpies. Good idea and well executd. I would have thought gargoyles wings would be cheaper.

That hydra has a very massive look already. Not only the scales make it look dinosaury. I am looking forward to how that turns out!

The beast is halfway painted!

I'm having trouble getting a decent shade of blue on her, but it's a matter of practice methinks. The two other back parts are assembled and primed, expect an update in a week or so.

You'll be the first to know. In the meantime, I've finished the body, with all the bony spikes and such. Here it is. Next bit - the neck "base" bit and the necks themselves. Getting close!

Ladies and gents, the beast is almost finished. Just a teensy bit o' greenstuff to the necks bit and the beastmasters.

Interesting take on the Hydra. The BSB is good - the banner is understated.

That's one of the best converted Hydra's I've seen in a very long time! The massive bulk of the body and the slender necks really complement eachother. Your BSB looks good, I like the black banner with the single rune...

I'll be back.

I'm not as much in love with the hydra as with the Coudren of Blood and that BSB, Good work on all of them regardless. :)

vorthain - yes it is, for a reason. I did not want it to detract the eyes from the miniature itself. Glad someone noticed.:)

Boreas_NL - thank you. I think it goes without saying I didn't like the "proper" hydra as well.

Dante blackfur - thanks. The hydra seems to be gathering pretty zero-one opinions, people who see it either love it or hate it. Good, good... :>

On the subject, I went with the vox populi and added two necks to make it correct fluff-wise. Please excuse the lousy photos and tell me what you think.

I wasn't a fan of the Hydra with 3 heads. I'm more inclined towards the 5, however I think with 7-8 heads... it would be balanced between the large body and the small heads. Just an idea! Keep up the good work.

I think you should have kept the dinosaur head, but some music instruments in its hands, and called it barny.

lol, as soon as I saw the purple torso I immediatly thought of Barny. Place your Hydra at the local games store and start singing 'two plus two is four, two plus two is four!'.
