View Full Version : Wash that Greenskin! - The Lazyman's Painting.

Well, it occured to me that I would never paint my Orc & Goblins army on which I had spent multiple hundreds of dollars.

And then came along Games Workshop Washes.
And then a brilliant lazy idea....

Why not prime my whole army White and use Washes for just about everything in this army? And so I did...

The "technique" is simple.

- Prime White
- Apply Wash of desired colour over a surface
- Apply white paint to areas where the Wash overflowed to
- Apply another Wash to next area (or same area to mix colors)

some 7-8 months ago I started this because of the holidays and I never got around to finish it.
Monday I wake up and decide, meh.. lets do this. And I have since painted a Giant, 20 Squig Hoppers, 2 Characters, 9 War machine crew, 2 warmachines and am in the process of painting 49 Boyz, 20 goblins on different mounts (spiders & wolves), 2 pump wagons, 3 snotling bases and the last scratch-built ballista.

And I already have done, months ago, an Orc Boar Chariot, Goblin Wolf Chariot, 15 strong Squig Herd, Doom Diver, 30 Night Goblins, and a Fanatic in but a few days.

I don't spend many hours on my painting, I just paint part of it, let it dry, do something else, then decide to apply another wash. Very lazy, if I really applied myself I could do multiple large units in a day!

I use very few paints other than washes, Dheneb Stone - to apply Gryphonne Sepia afterwards, Mithril Silver and chaos black. Bases are unwashed, just normal paints.

And the following is the result of this painting:

Black Orc Warboss on Boar, Black Orc Bigboss BSB (I finally tried some freehand, I'm happy with the result)

The Night Gobs 2 days before the models above were painted.

The Old ugly Albion Giant, with a greenstuffed patchwork night goblin Hat.

Hoppers! 20 of 'em

These units were painted months ago:

Just want to show the orc boar chariot here, the night gobs are complete in the first post of this thread.

And I will continue on - until it is all washed O:
Tournament in October (yeah, going to an unrestricted cheesy tournament with greenskins.. but im going for fun, not for a win).

That's looking nice, interesting to see the result. I agree that the washes are great, I've painted 2000 points skaven in a year, that would have been much harder without them.

Looks good. Yeah I use a ton of badab black in my chaos army, makes everything go by so fast.

Very cool stuff!

It does work rather well :) I think some details could use a bit of highlight, still (the squig teeth, things like that), but still it's surprisingtly good looking. Those washes are nice, heh? :)

Great job on the use of washes. On some of the larger areas of the giant, a base coat would have deepened the color up some, but beyond that everything looks pretty good.

I really like the blue armour pieces and weapon glyph on your warboss ... mind if I nick that idea (chainmail + blue wash I guess ?) ?

I use Mithril Silver, but Chainmail would probably given similar result.

Finished 10 Wolf Riders and 2 Spear Chukkas + 9 Crew. Finished Bases for what I had previously painted above.
So far this is my WAAAAAAAAAGH!

To do, from left to right.

The 3 Snotling bases, 24 Big'uns, 24 shields, 5 Spider Riders, 1 Scratch-built Spear Chukka, 25 Boyz, 25 Shields, 2 scratch-built Pump Wagons, 5 Spider Riders

And to add snow on all bases O:

I'm getting closer and closer to being done~

Lovely, quite nice.

I think the wash looks the best on the boar, but everything els ehas a sort of pastel look that kind of turns me off. Nice idea though, and if I hadn't already painted my mounted warboss' boar I'd do it that way

Looks good, and easy to do indeed.

So when I posted this, my vacation had just ended and it has been a busy August in school x_x (yeah no summer break, just 2 weeks vacation at the end of July).

But finally got some money available for hobby supplies and painted up some more units. Only 2 to go! (the big orc units!). And so monday, tuesday and today I have painted up stuff:

Whew. Also decided to add broken glass pieces to my snow bases, they make them less snow-white-empty~

So the whole army updated:

And image limit reached~ well whatever, the last pic was the white-primed 25 boyz unit and the 2 pump wagons you can already see above.

Some bases are more white than others, I'll probably add more layers of snow flock on some, though its alright also that they aren't all the same white~

I have tonight after school and tomorrow after school to finish these:

Only the skin (white -> green wash) and details (white -> devlan, gryphonne, ogryn washes) remain, the bases won't take much time to get done either.

I'm thinking one unit of 23 today and one unit of 24 tomorrow will do it

And this is, so far, my Wash'd Winter WAAAGH! - yes a large image so click it and observe it, I'm not resizing it ;D
