View Full Version : My 40K Plog of things big and small...

06-08-2009, 14:00
Hi all.

Until now i have only been playing and painting fantasy. I still prefer to play fantasy, but for a long time i have wanted to paint some 40K. SO, instead of buying some 40K models i started scratchbuilding a Warhound Titan... Just for the fun of it. Pictures will follow. This is the first 40K tank-like model i have ever painted as well as the my first ever scratchbuild, so please consider that before being too harsh in your critique.

Then i stumbled across a big lot of Space Marines, and will now be doing an Eagle Warriors army. Its a great colour scheme, but my lack of patience does shine through. Later i will scratchbuild a Thunderhawk for them.

Later there will be some guard as well (DKoK, as i sell some old stuff to afford buying them).

First the Titan:

It has been built from some plans i found somewhere, but too late i found some better plans with nicer feet... these feet makes it quite static.
Many thansk SKFDZ for his help in providing pictures in his warhound thread! Now thats great scratchbuilding!!!

Here is my Dreadnought for my Eagle Warriors:

And lastly my almost finished first squad of tactical marines... Just need the sergeant:

Thanks for looking... It might be a while between updates. But they will come

I must say that if that is your first scratchbuild I would love to see what you can produce once you've had a bit more practice, it looks pretty good to me! The marines are looking good too. As I'm sure you've noticed the white/blue divide down the back of the dreadnought could use a little tidying up, I'd also suggest going with the dark blue border to the chapter symbol the guy in the middle of the second picture in your last post has, the black border is bit too solid and cartoon-style for me. Still they do look good, looking forward to more.

These guys are ace, I love that colour scheme, and the shots from either side looks like 2 different armies!!

The Titan is fantastic, very well painted aswell. I never noticed before how much the top of a Warhound looks like the front of a dreadnought! strange!!

Thanks for the feedback guys!
I know i really need to clean up my painting, but i am sloppy and dont have the patience to let stuff dry...

Well, the DKoK arrived and here are a couple of pictures of my test mini:

Please comment on him. I am fairly happy with the result, i wanted him pretty dark but i am concerned that all the beatiful details on the model disappears. I will try to get better pictures another time.
Thanks for looking!

Great looking titan.
Also nicely painted.

Its time for an update. I finished the DKoK grenadiers (almost... still need to finish the heavy flamer team).
I am pretty happy with them. For my standard they are quite succesfull. Please do comment on them, i would like to improve my painting, so any suggestions will be well recieved! I know the sergeant has an illegal setup, but he looks cool!

On to the pictures:

More in next post

Next is the first tank i have ever painted (not counting the Titan of course).
A chimera transport for the grenadiers. It has been converted quite a bit following the guidelines in Bungaloo's thread. Really awesome stuff there, recommended (to the few, that still havent seen it). Nice and easy conversion, but really effective i think, kudos to Bungaroo! As i said, it is the first one and i think i might have gone a bit overboard with the weathering... Also i need to practice quite a bit more with the oil colours (used around all the rivets). I have used a normal krieg guardsman as the commander, gave him the arms from the cadian commander that came in the box and greenstuffed the shoulder pads and sleeves.

Again! Any comments are welcome!

and all of them together:

No comment on titan... pictures seems to speak, or else i gotta stop smoking... :D

The DKoK is nice... perhaps the "skull" helmet is to clean... some heavy wash will do the trick.. else it seems they actually are wearing skull helmet insted og gasmasks. The coats are good, love the "dirty" look, they are more than ever trench ****'s..
looking forward to se them in reality.. as with the titan, and eagle warriors.
What is the long term plan apocalypse game with IG and SM?

how did you paint such strait lines on your marines? just a steady hand?

10-09-2009, 04:20
Thanks for the comments guys!
I will think about the masks, they might need a little weathering to look more grim.

Matt D, i am happy that you think the lines are straight :D But yeah, they are just done with a steady hand... I think i will try some masking tape when i continue with the marines, but for now i am painting DKoK (and alot of fantasy stuff)... Luckily i dont have so much DKoK, so when it is done i am straight back to do more marines... and i have quite a bit of them to do!

Gunners: The long term plan is just to have two playable IG and SM armies... Will take a while for the DKoK though, still a student man.

The DKOK look really good, I personally think the faces look good, they really stand out against the dark armour they are wearing, would be very creepy seeing floaking skulls coming towards you on a battlefield!!

Hey there ! I missed this !

Looking very good, Mate ! Nice to see that youve finished your Warhound.

And....THANKS, for using ME as a reference

Looks like you paint a lot better than me, so ill guess that ill be coming to you when it comes to painting ;)

Keep posting !!

Nice warhound! Yes, the feet are a bit static, but the achievement of the build and paintjob is something to be very, very proud of.

Great to see the Eagle Warriors. I was thinking of using that scheme on my SH terminators, but have now decided to stick with a Blood Angel-ish chapter and am doing Angels Sanguine.

The DKoK look awesome, though. The metal finish is really grimy, and the skull masks pop out beautifully. Not sure about the hazard markings on the chainsword, though. Perhaps tone them down with some weathering along the edges?

12-09-2009, 07:58
Thanks for the comments guys!

@eltanko: Yeah i think that the contrast between the dark uniform and armour and the light skullmasks work quite well. Actually i think the models would lose alot by weathering down the masks, as they would be one dark colour then.

@SDKFZ: Thanks for your help providing pictures for my warhound. I couldnt have done it half as good without being able to use yours as reference. You are the master of scratchbuilding! If i can help in any way with painting techniques i would be happy to... Although my painting isnt that great.

@precinctomega: Thanks alot for your flattering comments!
Eagle warriors are quite difficult to paint i think, especially with the white (always difficult) and the shoulderpad markings done by freehand, but i think it is a great colourscheme and when the army is finished it should be looking pretty good as a whole (i hope :)). The space hulk terminators are blood angels though, right? So i guess its best to keep it to those colours since they sculptet to be blood angels specifically. Not a bad colourscheme at all i might add!
I agree that i should probably do something to that chainsword, the lines are blurry and too bright compared to the rest of the model. I recently found out that the storm trooper sergeant in the IG codex can only be upgraded to have a powerweapon though... i might switch the powerfist arm to a veteran sergeant... a shame really

Thanks again for the comments!!

The titan is looking awesome, do you have any WIP pics? Those Death Korps Of Krieg are looking really great too.

Keep it up.

17-09-2009, 07:37
Thanks for the comments bane_sword. I am afraid i dont have any WIP pics of the Titan... Well i know i took some, but i have no idea where they are now. I will have a look, and see if i can find them.

In the meantime!
I finished a heavy bolter team for the DKoK, but i didnt take any pics yet.

I am trying to enter a painting competition here in China, where you can paint up one AoBR space marine and the best one (i think only one) gets a game of Space Hulk which would be pretty nice... Well here is my WIP pictures of him. I am of course chopping him up to find a better pose for him, please do comment and make suggestions!

Now, is the pose allright? The arm without a bolter will have the hand up as to signalling the squad to halt, and i am wondering if the other arm is too long? I measured it with a normal tac marine, and it seems to be the same length.

17-09-2009, 18:13
The arm seems to be about the right length. Man, that is gonna be an awesome model. Oh and by the way, that Titan is awesome. Great job mate! Can't wait to see what else you do!

06-10-2009, 05:19
a little late, but here is an update.
I finished my marine for the competition, after an unfortunate smelting accident:

I thought, "Hey greenstuff will cure faster if i put my lamp closer to make it hot...." I didnt realise that the plastic would melt as well.
So i had to start all over, and i also found out that i could use parts from other models as well, since it was purely a painting competition. But i wanted to spice up my model anyways so this is what he ended up like:

It was a pain to reposition the head, and my sculpting is really crap, so the chest eagle didnt turn out too well.
But, here is the painted version anyways:

Thanks for looking!

Oh no blob marine!!!
The non blob one looks great, love the hazard markings on the power fist. The red looks really good.

07-10-2009, 18:22
I can only second eltanko, the non blob looks good !
I dont think that the chesteagle looks that bad, its good enough for me, but hey , im no judge at the comps. ! :D

Keep on turning out new and great stuff, Mate !
