Right, first things first, my humble apologies if you've come across this post on any other forums, I'm a strong believer that the best way to improve is through criticism, so as a result I'm a bit of a feedback whore, I'll be copy and pasting a fair bit of this from my posts on other forums, as it'd take forever to do it from scratch due to the quantity of pictures, the first few posts (just read that there's a limit of 4 pictures per post, oh dear!) are going to be very picture heavy.

Basically I'm attending my first tournament (Cardiff Carnage) on the 28th of august, and I've got one hell of a lot to do before then, however I'd still like to to be of the highest standard possible, as I'm a very unexperienced gamer I'd at least like to turn up with a good looking army :D

I'll try and avoid repeating pictures, but given the quantity i've got to upload there may be a couple of slips, I'll try and upload everything fairly quickly to avoid my post spamming up the board once an hour all day :)

This is the list I'll be running at carnage (governed hugely by necessity-both in time available, having to use what I've got painted, what I own + what I can afford)

It's straight from armybuilder - hence the funny style

Total Roster Cost: 1999

Here's what I've got painted (at least to a standard I'd be happy to take show to other people, loads are missing lots of stuff)

10 warriors with hw + sh + full command
5dogs
5dogs
5horsemen w flails
5horsemen w flails
5knights
1 Nurgle sorc on foot

written down like that it doesn't look like much, someone's been slacking.. :S

To do list:
Tzeench sorc on deamonic mount (just an excuse to use the deamon lord model, which I love, and looks/what I had won out) - He's missing 1 arm, but apart from that nicely based + greenstuff tentacled, still needs painting

Tzeench BSB on disc
This is mr sigwald, disc done + painted(not happy with crappy freehand) and he's been started, restarted the base, it's going to be as posh as I can manage

10 Chosen with full command
eek... every one needs converting, 3 done so far, haven't even decided how I'm going to paint these badboys

1 Warshrine - Unstarted, decided my sculpted dude is going to play some part in this - I picked up a corpse cart cheap, may get used but not sure

5 Dogs, positioned, bases made +painted +snowed, seal lines removed, gaps greenstuffed, skin basecoated + washed, fur finished,

5 marauder Horsemen - based, undercoated, all put together (barring heads), horses v. nearly base-coated
****************** hate these guys.

O.k, let the picture-fest begin, starting from a couple of months back:

Thanks for the input guys, glad you like my pups :)

I didn't realise things had to be o.k'd on this forum before being posted hence the lack of updating splurging, here's some more, again I'll try and get all of these posted up as quick as possible to avoid spamming the board :)

Here we go:

While I waited for my mates to get back from uni, wanted to be in the cinema seeing the new transformers didn't seem to be a time for more core troops, so I tried out freehand on this dude, my god it's hard, even simple stuff like this :S - I usually paint to chill out but freehand on white is a right stress :)

http://i433.photobucket.com/albums/qq59/I-hatephotobucket/nurglechappy.jpg
(Yes, this guy is storming my shed..8-) )

Pending some good criticism about the visible seal lines on my dogs they all get this treatment now:

Despire being real throw away units seeing the gaps in their faces really irritated me :s just got to add horns and second check for seal lines.

I know many people aren't fans of the hounds tails - if you're one of them then check out the 2nd picture - they're the tusks from the chaos night sprue, I think they work really well - opinions on that welcome of course :D

Those are A-MAZING!

What's your recipe for the flesh on the hounds?

Byron
08-08-2009, 20:07
Thanks loads guys :)

Sure man,

I use pretty much the same technique for everything I paint if you take it down to a basic level

first basecoat (foundation paint usually or something+foundation paint)
then wash
repeat basecoat, leaving wash in shadows
add lighter colours

So it's something you can easily transfer if you wish hopefully

Right, I'll do this in stages, it may sound like a bit much for a rank and file model, but the way it works for me (especially using foundation paints, which are quick drying) is that I do a batch of 3/4/5 depending on size, and by the time I've done stage 1 on models 1,2,3,4 model 1 is dry and ready for stage to etc.

Stage 1 - black spray undercoat

Stage 2 -
Flesh : mix of calthan brown (foundation paint) + scorched brown + water, 1 part of each - 2 thin coats of this covers well - Do this neatly, as being neat in this stage means that you don't really need to do so in any others. Taking time here saves time later

Stage 3 -
Asurmian blue**** + any of the brown washes - you can change this on every model for slight variation - I used devlan mud 1 part of each. - Did this 2 times, with a fairly thick coat, making sure it didn't pool too much, but no need for being neat

Stage 4 -
Pick out the raised areas with the same mix as used in stage 2

Stage 5 - Add 1 part bleached bone to the mix, higlight a little more sparsely, using little lines. (Undercoat bones/teeth in this while you're at it to save some time)

Stage 6 - Add 1 more part bleached bone
(highlighting teeth/bone with same mix)

Stage 7 -
Mix red gore +blood red and thin them down lots with water, about 2 parts water to 1 paint (consistency of skimmed milk is a good way to judge this) - remove most of it from your brush and carefully do little lines.

Important : these lines come from recessed/shadowy areas finishing on the highlighted ones, makes sure the shadows look a bit red.

Stage 8 - Add 1 part skull white to the mix from stage 6, and 2 parts water, pick out the very topmost highlighted areas, and finish of the bones and teeth whilst you're at it.

Hope that helps, 8 stages may seem like a lot, but you're doing less and less each stage, so it speeds up every stage from the first.

(Stage 9 bit of spray varnish to stop these guys flaking :))

Writing this type of thing down is useful for me to think about my processes I use, so feel free to ask for any others :)

****This blue wash is on every single model in my army at some point, most of my stuff has a big thick wash somewhere in the painting process, and the use of this keeps things a little more cohesive, it's lathered on every single base generously as well :D - It's a very low effort way of tying your shiz together, especially between model and base, and you can choose a colour to fit your army, e.g. you could use thraka green for an all nurgle army, or baal red for an army you wanted to make slightly more fleshy and warm, works a charm!

I've had a box of spare warriors sitting under my desk for a while now, I figured I'd paint the up as a) If I don't get all the sculpting on my chosen done in time for carnage I can use them instead and b) The box was all mangled, and a couple of bits had been cut from their sprue's, so I figured they'd sell for more painted. (If anyone is in any need of any painted chaos stuff let me know)

Here they are so far: http://i433.photobucket.com/albums/qq59/I-hatephotobucket/2.jpg Bone + weps + a few more details to go.

Started work on a semi-scenic base for my tzeench exalted (sigvald) model, and also made him a disc (not very happy at all with the freehand on this, which I really do suck at unfortunately :S Obviously it's an area which I definitely need to work on :S

also have a base for my spawny thing (which will have the bottom half of a snake I've decided) - and also started working on the bodyfront, which is basically going to be one big mouth, no idea if it's going to look any good, it's still seriously lacking teeth - as ever suggestions and criticisms would be great :D

Spawny body + lower half start (quite hard to see the shape it's going to be) + tzeentch disk

Chuffed!
Right, so after a life(/point) saving phonecall from a friend I rushed out an army list for carnage - the deadline was in about 12 hours or something, and you get docked points/dirty dozened if it's late apparently.

Anyways this is the list, it's very heavily governed by what I have painted/purchased, I noticed a few annoying mistakes after it was sent of: ce la vie

It's straight from armybuilder - hence the funny style

The GW water effect is rubbish, trying to find some cheap stuff to go over with this now, not too much of a fiasco, as wells aren't meant to have bottoms anyway :P

If anyone knows a cheap uk online shop where I can get a good water effect please let me know, I've been recommended c1211 woodland effects or somehting like that, and given a link to Barrule.co.uk website, but they're out of stock, and being a bit lax about replying to my e-mails :S

Great looking army you have so far. Some lovely painting on display. I have to say I'm particularly intrigued to see what you do with Sigvald. It's a wonderful model for painters. I have a Sigvald conversion I'm working on to paint next month and I can't wait. Anyway, going off on a tangent. Looking forward to seeing more! :)

I'll try and dignify everyone with a proper response now it's late and i'm not rushing of out :

(good thing I'm not rushing, smilies count as pictures!? Editing out the happiness...)

Tangents are what this hobby is made more, makes everything more interesting, tell me more! I'm completely in agreement about it being a wonderful model :-)

http://demonwinner.free.fr/france/2009/golden_demon_winner.php?categorie=1

Check out the silver there, pretty huh?

Hey, I've seen this stuff before! ;-)

As to water effect, I just tried something (look for pictures at the end of my painting diary). It's just a layer of Plastic Padding Wood Glue. :-)

Thanks for the advice bud, posted you a question about it in your topic :-)

(you've seen it on chamber of the ever chosen I think, that's where I've seen your threads at least :-))

Some very inspirational stuff going on in this thread. I'm loving the painting, bases and Gs work. Keep up the good work:-)
Tah man, I'm trying on keeping up the work, but I've got holes in my fingers from climbing this evening, it hurts to hold stuff!

Some very nice stuff. I've seen it before somewhere as well, not sure where though. Thought it was here, but apparently not :-p

I'm a little unsure as to the list you're actually taking, as the last time you posted it is a bit of a mess

The painting is great though!
I do whore the feedback, I think I've got a similar thread up in 4 forums :S.
I got my c+ping confused, posted the appropriate one up above :-), any advice on tactics would be mint if you've got some spare!

Echo RaZeR's comment, some very nice looking mini's.... Looking forward to seeing the finished Sigwald!!

Tah man, I'm having a bit of an epic trying to find some appropriate water effect for his base, that's not a real excuse though, I'll man up and hopefully figure what's goign in his hands soon, I love the sword he comes with, what do you think of a somewhat 'girly' banner, and by girly I mean by chaos standards, as something massive, hulking, spiky and black would look out of place on such a delicate model.

I love the sculpted conversions. What are you gonna do with the half sinew torso!? Looks amazing. Lovely painting too

Ideally the torso will join its lower hald and becoem a snaky demon thing with a *huge* scythe, and will be sacraficing stuff on my war altar, however I can forsee this being massively ambitious and even more time consuming, fingers crossed!

wow this looks awesome...
you have quite some skill there my good sir...
keep it up...im very anxious to see more

With such a polite request it'd be rude to refuse, be anxious no longer!

I doodled a bit at work today and took my chaos bitsjar and a couple of chosen to work (forgetting glue was a major fault with my plan to do conversions sat in the gatehouse :S), so I sketched out a couple of ideas, 1 of which resulted in the spear wielding dude - who I'm quite happy with-**guy, the other ending up with the butcher guy with a head in 1 hand and a dock-of axe in the other, not so happy with this guy. 1 problem with the chosen models (asides from the majority being depressingly static) is that they're so huge than anything normal sized seems dwarfed on them - e.g. the head in this guys hand :s

I also held up a normal warrior shield next to them, looks widdy!

Anyways, some pictures of progress - in no particular order:

Chosen so far:

New guy #1
http://i433.photobucket.com/albums/qq59/I-hatephotobucket/DSCI1586.jpg

New guy #2** Serious amount of pinning and chopping went on here, also right hands are apparently extremely rare :S
http://i433.photobucket.com/albums/qq59/I-hatephotobucket/DSCI1587.jpg

Absolutely hating painting up these guys
http://i433.photobucket.com/albums/qq59/I-hatephotobucket/DSCI1588.jpg

Any opinions on this as a basic scheme? Obviously I'll be spending a fair bit more time on each model, really open to suggestions here. - Is it too plain/too shiny/not worn enough, anything?

http://i433.photobucket.com/albums/qq59/I-hatephotobucket/DSCI1591.jpg

In general I'd really like people to slate me with any criticisms/suggestions for improvement with the stuff I'm working on now, bring my chosen, tzeench disc rider, demonic mount sorc, and warshrine (unstarted) - I've kind of saved best till last and I'm really hoping for these guys to be something I'm really proud of, also I've got 2 weeks ish till Carnage so there's still time to do bits and bobs on the other stuff.

Criticisms of anything so far would be great, however picky it seems - national appraise my WoC army week starts now, be ruthless, even if it's something like - 'I think it'd be better if you did this to every single one of your bases' type thing, hit me with all you've got!

Footnote :-o Wow, post came out instantly, none of this validation, what happened? ^_^

Looking good :) I like both the new chosen, probably actually prefer the guy holding a head. Dont worry about the size of the head, it looks fine to me... I like the colour scheme as well, similar to mine, and I think a simple scheme works well for chosen...

As far as the list goes, it looks pretty good. My one query would be why did you give throwing axes to your khorne marked horsemen? If they're in range with the axes, they have to charge... :p Granted they might be able to use them occasionally with reforming or something, but I still think it's a bit of a waste of points... Could have used those to make the other unit MoS and give it a musician. But as you've submitted it, nvm :p
Tactics wise I dont think I really have any advice... Try to use the hounds to stop the khorne stuff from being bated, and try not to let your warrior blocks be double-charged :p

I think the start on the marauder horsemen looks good.

I think you only have to get your pictures validated for a number of posts, 10 or 20 or so.

Byron
11-08-2009, 16:06
I think that they can throw stuff over their shoulders because they're fast cav :D thought it'd be fun ^_^

I'd love to have the guts to run a monogod themed army or at least everything frenzied, although I guess if it was khorne I'd have to take an unmarked scroll caddy or something :S

Quick update :)

Time for some more shockingly taken on desk under a bad lap pictures!

(On the plus side these guys are getting closer to being finished to a degree where I can stop doing them and go back over them if I get some spare tie in the future, yay!)

So far I can see 3 metal bits I missed on the headless horsemen yesterday night already.

p.s. Ordered in some water effect from barrule a couple of days ago, can't wait for it to arrive, also ordered a little series 7 brush, sexxy!!

Still looking for all of the criticisms/suggestions I can get :)

Everything looking very nice; I especially like the hounds.

As for your warrior scheme you posted in #34, I think it is a little too "iron warriors-y". It doesn't do your painting skill justice. I think colored armor is worthwhile, because when the entire model is covered in metallics, it tends to look bad. In my opinion at least.

I don't think you need to worry about a worn/torn look. Being new and shiny is no sin!

I just had a similar suggestion from another guy, I can see where you're coming from with the iron-warriors thing totally, I actually prefer the look of the coloured chosen (see the awesome link below,!)

However there's 2 problems for me, 1 is that i'm not very competant with that style of painting, and the 2nd is choosing a colour (unless it was black) would have to be one to suit a particular mark, and I'm as yet undecided on what my favourite one is :S

I saw this yesterday and was shocked and stunned, how awesome would an entire nurgle army in this style look!?
:http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/viewthread.php?tid=34028 it's sooooo goood!

Thanks loads for the pointer, I'm just lacking the skills to do it :S

The best mark is Slaanesh, it's hard to beat immunity to fear, terror and panic for only 10 points. However, I see no reason to follow restrictions on colours. I have red armour on my warriors, and I wouldn't give a toss if someone complained they're not marked by Khorne.
Just choose the colour you like most, and run with it. :)

Nice link and a very nice colour scheme but I have to agree with mrtn. There's no rule saying a colour has to belong to a particular god and on top of that there are plenty of other colours that you could use (my Slaaneshi warriors have bone coloured armour) without having to commit yourself to one of the four. You could have green WoC like that link and not be Nurgle oriented.

Question though, how do you get your snow so deep and crisp? I've been having a problem so changed my basing theme to a spring melt instead.

Thanks man, I've gone with a rusty colour scheme, which I think is generic enough for me to be able to call whatever mark I like. I tend to make my warriors slaanesh, but I'm leaning towards tzeentch, and nurgle has always been a favourite looks/storywise, I'd appreciate your thoughts on my rustywarriors if you've got any :)

I got asked this question yesterday on another forum :D Hope you won't begrudge me for c+ping the response I gave

It's bi-carb - great stuff, costs nearly nothing, seriously, if you're in the uk I picked up my pot for 60p, and I can only just tell that it's gone down.

basically I mix it with pva, the thicker the mix the more you can position it, and the fluffier it'll look (never as much as the gw snow though, I didn't get on with this at all, and it's massively overpriced, although mixing it with a lot of pva doesn't work out too badly), if you're after stuff which looks like meltsnow a bit more pva will help.

Aim for a texture which is a bit grainy, best hting to do is just experiment, bear in mind the more pva the more it'll shrink when it's dry.

Let me know how you go on and if you have any problems

Hope that helps man :)

Do you use a particular technique to do the teeth on your sculpt? I have always had trouble with teeth. Do you sculpt the teeth first then put them in to the gums, or do you sculpt them both at once, or do you do the gums first? Do you use any wire under them?

Mr Gamesday looks really good. I can't make it this year and so haven't gotten one of these wonderful minis. Will have to do so at somepoint but will be at the mercy of the ebay price hike I guess! The weathered, rusty colour scheme looks really great on him and the unit of chosen you've pictured him with looks to be coming along very nicely too.
That sculpting is warped, bizarre and very unnerving. Brilliant! :D

Basically I roll small sausages, carefully cut into them then push 'away' with a knife, so they stay stuck to the blade, then push down on their tips with a finger to make them the right shape, leaving them to dry on the blade - I've used milliput + greenstuff because I found that greenstuff is to bendy for teeth used alone. When dried I cut of the base of the tooth, because they've been misshaped by the knifeblade. Once I'm back from my tournament and less rushed I'll make a quick 5 pic tutorial or something better than this explanation I promise :) - If I forget remind me!

Thanks man, it was pretty simple to do, only hard thing to do was pinning down the weapon shaft, and that was just a bit fiddly :)

Burning the midnight oil :S bed time for me, but some progress made :)

Bone on chosen, snakeybody on warhsrine pulling beastie, warhsrine is done (it's a pretty simple altar type thing but it'll do), sigwald has his weapon and shield has been attached - with a tentacle, surprise surprise :P.

Chosen also have had their bone bits done up a few stages, and metal done to a very basic level, still lacking details on all of them.

So close but so far!

I dont know exactly how a snake would pull anything, the way it moves, but the beast looks awesome so far. I really dig the end of the tail and the scale sculpting.

I am not so sure about the banner right now. I think it would benifit from being long and thin, what with having such a tall pole. Would give you more realestate for adding damage and rips, buffing the "worn" look of the unit.

You have impressive sculpting skills; have you considered sculpting a banner with a trapped daemon pressing out or something of that type? You could definitly pull it off.

Thanks for the honesty about the banner, it is indeed a real weakpoint, at some point in the future I may well try what you've suggested:) as i can't do freehand very well at all!

All it is is pva + baking soda, I mix it till it's at a consistency where if you prod it into 'peaks' they stay up usually, but because I wanted this a little more drippy I added some more pva :)

Baking soda sets me back 60p per pot, and I think it's probably enough to do 10 2000 point armies, i rate it muuuuuch higher than the stupid fluffy gw stuff !

He and tentacles are my major projects for today :D Thanks man, I've no idea how on earth I'm going to paint it though, thin paint whatever I do, so I can paint it again properly and not a rush in the future! I'm thinking prob starting dark flesh and then blending up to pinky fleshy stuff, but not too sure, watch this space, whatever I do it's got to be done by tonight ^_^

Edit: @ El aartos thanks man, if you'd like to try it out yourself i posted a link to the tutorial I based it on a little above halfway up the previous page.

I've only really been using GS a year and a bit, best way to learn with it is to play, and be willing to repeat the same thing again and again and again, one of the sections of muscle looks terrible on its own, really awful, but when you repeat it (not even than consistently I may add ^_^) they look much better, if you want to know how I did any part of it specifically let me know :)

(My gaming still leaves a lot to be desired :D)

Wait wait wait wait. How on earth did you paint the metallics on Sigvald's armor!?

Sigvald looks great, well done.

I don't know what you were talking about with all the picture hosting sites; all the pictures worked for me for lal of them!

The snake sculpt came out pretty cool. I think it is a little tall for its own good, but it doesn't distract from its awesomeness. I think that, to do it justice, it should be painted at a high contrast, with bright highlights and very dark shading in the crevices. Maybe it is the picture, but the way it is now does not show off all that detail you put into the model!

Great Blog work here, Byron! The sculpting is exceptionally nice, but that's coming from someone who can't even fill gaps ;)

Of note are the bases. When I was trying to figure out how I was going to do mine, the thought of doing them the same way occurred to me. I really like the way yours came out, it creates a nice contrast. I'm still glad I decided to go all glacier on mine though.

I'm looking forward to more!
