The gaming group i play with have started to get ready a campain set in the Badab Wars, we have 3 traiter players and 2/3 loyal players

we well be using the BoLS new Badab booklet, which has new stuff for the armys as well as rules for boarding actions.
So we will be posting our armys here for all you to enjoy, first we will be getting 350 points done for the boarding actions and then the army it self

aslo i'll be posting pics of the map and a few other things im doing for it

so with out going into a rambling rant about how great the new supplement is

here is my Astral Claws tester as well as Huron him self

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u317/rickie8437/002-5.jpg

i tryed a orange armour colour but to be honest they he looked to Tony the tiger for my taste, so i went with a more brown/yellow, using dessert yellow, still not sure on the strips, aslo im working on a new tester for black armour with orange strips, more like the rogue trader pics.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u317/rickie8437/001-5.jpg

here is Huron him self, he has a axe and power fist as the rules say, he will get painted once i sort out which colour to use

Ok spent the morning working on a new tester for the Astral Claws, found out orange can be a pain to paint lol

so here it is

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u317/rickie8437/004-2.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u317/rickie8437/005-1.jpg

hope you like, still things like the pipes and vents on the armour to be done but i can do that once i start the first squad

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u317/rickie8437/006-1.jpg

added a pic of the two testers next to each other, might be easy to look at them then

all C&C welcome

Hey, I'm really liking both testers there, they both look really good, though I'm more inclined to like the first one. The idea of doing the badad campaign in your gaming club is reall cool, I hope it goes well. The badad booklet itself led me to starting a star phantoms army.
Keep up the good work,
Raven

i do like the first tester, but i dont like the strips, and to be honest not sure how to do them on that colour, there is a nice camo patter for the howling griffions, which is close to that tester but has clusters of brown spots,

after all it the Badab War, which was a war that the marines use camo the most

but thanks

I'm jealous that you are able to embark on a Badab War project. As for your testers, I probably second the first one. I like the stripes on the second but not the black so much, whereas the first one is more plain but much more 'complete' IMO?

Awesome! I'm thrilled to see the ripple effects that this campaign book is creating around the world. Good luck to you and the group, and keep us posted. FWIW, I prefer the orange color. The other looks a little too much like Lamenters yellow with tiger stripes.

They're Grrrrrrrrreat (sorry, Tony the Tiger pun)
They look really good though, very different from the normal plain colour schemes!
I can only imagine how annoying orange is to paint, but it does look very nice in contrast to the black.

yeah, the black is a little much, but remember the pipes on the chest as well as the air vents havent been painted, so that would break it up alot, i am thinking of doing the head orange with the strips as well to break the black up just as much

i like dessert yellow as a colour just never found a reason to us it :), as for the strips not sure on it, they were my first try which sort of got better on the second, the only reason i didnt go dull orange was id like to have tanks, and a lot of tanks that are bright orange with tiger strips would drive any sane man to do silly things.

i new some one would say that lol you had to be the first hehe
yeah i love how the BoLS book as so many diffrent schemes in it for the chapters, i just wish GW would under stand that just cause marines are elite super soldiers doesnt mean that they wouldnt us camo, but thats like hard work for them to do prob one reason they dropped it in 2nd, oh

going to have to have a good think as to what way to paint these, as i have my 350 points built and sprayed ready to go, arrr cant make up my mind lol

Go with desert yellow bud. Easier on the eyes and doesn't make you want to say 'They're Grrrreat!'.

Got some more stuff coming this week and now I can print off some decals for my Mantis Warriors.

Oh! Mantis Warriors! They're looking good! Always considered painting up a force of them so I'm enjoying your efforts.

Hmm, it may be worth a try just to see what it's like, but I still think the overall desert yellow camo is a better armour colour, if a little more bland. It also fits more with trh traditional Astral Claws scheme.

well after a long hard slog of paiinting tester after tester i have now come up with scheme :)

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u317/rickie8437/Redcorsair.jpg

in the badab supplement, there is a pic of the astral claws armour painted like this.. so ive started my first unite, i have to say there very easy and quick to do and nice on the eye

i know some will say that thay didnt paint there armour like this untill the end of the war, which is try but it looks good, also i have 60 chaos marines that i could use but will not as id rather paint them up as word bearers or night lords

a loyalist looking army painted as red corsairs can be used as C:SM or as C:CSM

pics will come some time to day, i should be finished the whole unit very soon, well once the wash drys *shacks fist*

Great job guys, keep it up! Love the new supplement.
I have a novamarines army (currently converting a Mahabala Durja), a space sharks army (currently painting up 5 hammerhead/sternguard in tranquility camo colours, going to do a termie squad and quintus in same colours), and will do a Cpt. Monthai for my raptors.

Have plans for more chapters, mantis warriors (have the tranq sniper sgt built), executioners (have a body for lavoisier), exorcists, and sallies.

You can check out my progress on my blog. Subscribed to this thread - keep it up!

Been reading through the campaign pdf and I'm wondering what to use for starship crew in the boarding actions. Unless any of you guys have a bunch of IG that can be drafted, I'm thinking EM4's plastic troopers (http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Science_Fiction.html). Cheap and cheerful. What d'you think?

Thanks Natsirtm. Yeah Im a wee bit dubious about the chapter symbol over bone as well but unfortunately the terminators have their symbol on the opposite shoulder so I have no choice this time. I will give it a go and see how it turns out as im just about to start the rest of the squad.

I still think that for that test termi, he should've made the stripes a little more regular, put on a swept-back two-pronged hairstyle, and maybe given him a stogie.

daemonkin
17-08-2009, 12:41
Painted over the decal. Was just a tester on a spare model - poor guy gets lumped with every test scheme and idea I have.

Basically the decals are a little large so I snipped 3 cuts in the decal and applied it to the pad, waited for it to set and painted the yellow. I also gave the red a once over but might do a second brighter red.

Yeah Mk4 but got a bad batch of tac marines so spent about 5 hours filing off mould lines, details and my fingers. Went into the store first thing this morning to order 2 boxes of Space Hulk and while I was there showed John my models and he promptly gave me a new box gratis.

Nice polite and great service. Go on Belfast!

(still looking for camera...)

they have a pretty simple paint scheme...I hate priming anything with armor or metallic parts in white, so they were sprayed with a black primer(gives the green a little more substance), dark angels green for a base coat, and a couple coats of scorpion green(light on each coat, gradually making a solid color). White for the helmet, of course.

Nice models--I particularly like that last batch of Mantis Warriors, daemonkin. Did you freehand the symbols?

daemonkin
31-08-2009, 08:04
@Magos: Wish I could say yes. Kinda. I got them from Bolter and Chainsword. The dilemma was to either print them from B&C as they were on decal paper or import them to Photoshop (other graphic programs are available!) and colour the background to a guess-timated colour of yellow.

I went for the former and while they are slightly larger than the decals supplied by GW they work well enough. The next batch I will use Micro-sol/set to get the decal smoother as I had a bit of work getting them to adhere to the curve.

Once dry I had to paint the yellow and red onto the decal. Seems to work ok.

love the blog Natsirtm especially the history fluff very good mate the figures look really nice too how long did it take you to get it together

thanks dude, took me about 4 months to get what's posted on the blog together - was participating in a "Tale of 4 Gamers" style competition at a LGS (which I won - le woot!) so definitely had some extra motivation to get 'er done. Fluff was done in final 2 days before competition finished in case I needed some "bonus" points ;)

These look brilliant mate. Also, I vote for green helmets with yellow/white stripes.

I went for the former and while they are slightly larger than the decals supplied by GW they work well enough. The next batch I will use Micro-sol/set to get the decal smoother as I had a bit of work getting them to adhere to the curve.

FYI, I am pretty sure that microsol/set are mostly made of white vinegar. They smell almost exactly the same. If you are printing bunches of decals might be worth giving it a go on a test fig with vinegar instead of spending a bunch of money on little tubes of microsol.

Micro-sol consists of acetic acid and a mild wetting agent (say, dish detergent), among other things. So yeah, while it's possible to mix something containing the two major ingredients of Micro-sol, but it's not likely to be nearly as effective, if at all. I'm fairly certian Micro-set is alcohol based.

Really, the best course is to just buy the stuff. It's not that expensive, one bottle of each will last you forever (no, really, mine's going on five years old and still prefect) and it'll be far and away superior to any dubious homemade concoctions.

Besides, smell isn't always the best indicator of composition. My two-part epoxy smells like bananas, but I assure you, it doesn't taste like them*.

*Tasting epoxy is not recommended, for a variety of highly personal reasons.

Thx for the info, I had read something about the vinegar online and figured it might be worth mentioning if you had decals to test on.

Though, I have no idea how you are going on five years with the same bottle, both of my bottles are almost down to 2/3 and I bought them this year.

We also adapted the Heresy Codex to play with Epic, Aeronautica and BFG as well as 40k. That was a lot of fun and pretty much every Epic game played since then was shoe-horned into the campaign. Check out my website for the Heresy Campaign games.

they're not the best marines i ever painted, but after many many bad test peices I settled on Yanden Dark Sun? over a white base. The foundation paints were Godsends for yellows. The from there a simple coat or 2 of golden yellow. left it at that hoping they'd grow on me but....nope:(
So now im going to paint he trim on their shoulder pads either orange or i think blood red. Their transfers aren't going on well as i usually have no problem....
I'll get some pics up on a painitng project once i get aorund to it, then give you a link on this thread if its ok with you guys. Got to get a site to host my pics first. They're coming. Rickie has decided to put the Astral Claws on hold and concentrate on his wolves who were apparently also involved in the campaign. Also means we have an even number of loyal and rebel players now.

We have had 2 games so far and the luck of the Irish has won out both times. The Mantis Warriors have yet to record a loss so it is all going well.

Some updates also on the campaign on a different scale:

right now for the log, a few people have dropped out leaving us with four players, 3 traitor and one ard as nails loyalist, so to even up the numbers the Astra Claws have been dropped, i will be playing the Raptors, a chaptor ive always liked since seening them in AI3, so ive done a test mini and here he is

simple and very very quick to do

so should be able to catch up to demon in no time

enjoy and will get more posted over the weekend i hope :)

as for the campain, we have started to get the rules and how it will work down, and if every thing goes to plan kick it off in the new year, going to be a map based campain with a few nice houes rules and such, as soon as its started keep an eye on this log im sure pics of battles will be posted

As Rickie said we ironed out some areas of the campaign last night. I would hardly call it a kicking - 7 - 5 in kill points. Think Maybe I could have held out until turn 5.

@Rick: Raptors look nice but I thought you were going to try a quick howling griffon paint job?

I will get a campaign system in place on my website to host all battle reports and images and will write up the campaign rules over the weekend and get a rough draft done or the guys next week.

Hi ArchHeretic. I'm guessing you mean my Mantis Warrior bikes. They are pretty sleek looking and from the original (IIRC) Epic marine sprue. More pics available here (http://www.thousand-sons.co.uk/category/34)

Hopefully will be adding to this army in the near future - devastators, assault marines, another thawk, some armour and a reaver titan.

@Trib: Stop blowing hot air up my ass - your chilli last week was making hot air go the other way ;-)

@Capt Galenus: Will have to try and get you down for a game when I can. Be moving to the big smoke soon so may be easier than coming down to the sticks. We're all progressing our armies along at a steady pace - the tale of painters has really focused me and my painting.

trib75 - just a question you may have answered a million times already but what colours did you use for your blue colour?

trib75
04-02-2010, 14:20
Hi Belials apprentice actually you are the first person to ask me. I used regal blue over chaos black spray then painted over that with ultramarines blue and finished it with a blue wash slightly thinned down with water roughly a 70 parts wash to 30 parts water mix. Hope that helps you out a bit

B&C has an avatar gallery with those images for most chapters (the same ones). They may have taken them from somewhere else, but it could be an easy place to find the chapter you want quickly.

So we have had a bit of hiatus from 40K playing Malifaux. Despite the distraction most of us have got some progress done with our 40k armies, turns out now that the Blood Ravens made an appearance at Badab and were undocumented.

Rickie is doing up Blood Ravens instead of Marines Errant who were being painted up instead of Space Wolves who were being painted up instead of Salamanders who were being painted up instead of Astral Claws.... I think.

I think Rick's plan to use Exorcists rules as Blood Ravens works as they have psyker weapons (weird for a chapter that has no psyker capabilities) but captures the fluff of the Blood Ravens being psyker heavy.

Anyway, enough jabbering, onto the painting.

Haven't had a chance yet D. But I have taken a step forward and ordered a ream of card stock so can start soon. Been busy house hunting and working and painting and gaming and training and and and and...

Will get round to it.

But for now we are preparing for some more shipping lanes games for the campaign. I have some pics of the last one and that was quite good. Will have to build my campaign management system on my website to record the campaign progress.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Hi Philb, the script was done using decal paper, which I got from here:

http://www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk/category/Decals

I just collected a bunch of Astartes quotes and typed them up in MS Word, applying colour and font to suit then printed a whole sheet off. Now I have a selection of quotes in various sizes which should fit on any vehicle I plan to have for my army.

I'm currently working on another 5 assault marines to bring them up to a 10 man squad then it'll be 2 tac squads.

I'll post pics when I have a few more done.

Titan Wolfe
08-05-2011, 17:03
Which paper did you use ???

JayeL
09-05-2011, 09:07
Hi Tiatn,

I used the Laser Water Slide Decal paper because I have access to a colour laser printer.

I have used the Inkjet variant too in the past and it is just as good as long as it's sealed after printing and before application. I have used both Testors Dullcote and GW's spray varnish to seal it and they both seem to work fine.
