View Full Version : Adeptus Orkanikus (Heavily converted Ork army)

11-08-2009, 23:06
Hello everyone! This is what will hopefully be a successful log of an army that has been about 3 years in the making! Around 3 years ago, me and a friend bought another friend's collection from him as he was quitting the hobby. He was an ex-staffer, so this bits box was quite extensive. He had the grand idea of making an Adeptus Orkanikus army, the idea basically being a highly detailed, extensively converted ork horde. I have kept making promises to the other half of the purchase that I would make a start on this army, and I finally am!

My basic motivation is that a) The girlfriend's away for 10 days, and b) there's an army painting competition in my local GW at the end of August. For the competition I need to have a legal army (of any size). Fortunately, that means two squads of 10 and an HQ. I have currently decided on 10 sluggaz, 10 shootaz, and I should be going for a Big Mek, but can't quite make my mind up yet. If all goes well, I'll get a mob of jawa like grots in there as well!

Right, onto the pictures. I'm going to start this off with pictures of the models we acquired, which are awesome. Unfortunately I am a lazy fool and didn't keep the warboss as safe as I might have, and the really cool platform above his head has broken. I am looking for ways to replace it so that the oiler grot can reclaim his place!

'Da Insparashun'

Mek/Warboss in Mega Armour (note the high level of detailing in the arms, and the skull on 'kog' logo on his chest)

Runtherd? Not sure, anyway, a converted Skarsnik, who is there to keep the attack squig of champions in check and is also showing off the army's logo.

Another possible (and more probable) Runtherd candidate.

Another brilliantly characterful squig

Sorry for the wordy start, but a lot more pics to follow!

11-08-2009, 23:08
From the start - an excellent and original idea. These concept models are quite good - if the rest of the army can look like this it'll be good.

12-08-2009, 00:12
The concept is good, I like the look so far. And that squig rocks!!!

12-08-2009, 00:25
Yeah, I really like the theme too. Though it is causing my mind to go off on so many related tangents. I have always wanted to have a fairly unique army, turns out I just needed someone else to start it for me!

So, what have I done so far?

First, here's a modified model from the original batch. Originally, he was just armed with a power claw and the banner. I have added the bionik eye and other bits to his armour. Since the picture, I have also added a power pack with Servo arm on his back. He was a great Nob model before, but these touches just make him tie in with the theme a bit more. (Base wasn't my work either!)

Secondly, the Sluggaz Nob, based on the Kommando Nob model. I have added a Black Orc head, trimmed the horns and replaced them with bits off a smoke launcher. I have also made him a new Power Klaw and given him a bosspole.

Some Slugga arms I have been working on (these have since been attached to Boyz)

Obligatory Workspace shot (as I'm the only one at home, I have just poured the bits onto my desk in a free for all!):

@Gdolkin: I believe that would be: 1000000000000001111111111! :p

@ Sparks: Great job! The Ork weapons are great looking. The Squig and the nobs in particular are great looking models.

12-08-2009, 04:03
Great work, intresting twist on a cool trend. I love the banners.

Sweet. Good going Sparks. Lovin the look this army has. Nice to see you hobbying again.

12-08-2009, 10:51
Excellent stuff so far man!

12-08-2009, 11:15
Its always a pleasure to seem some awesome pics.

12-08-2009, 11:32
Loving the look of these guys, i think i have a taste for anything with bits stuck on, give me plasticard and tubes and cables and i'm happy, very skilled work.. i'll be watching

12-08-2009, 16:26
Great start and concept for these guys/fungoids.

Especially like all the little alterations all over the models, just adds that little bit of extra character, and looks fantastic.

Like the BO and Kommando nobz especially.

12-08-2009, 16:38
Wow, thanks for the kind words so far (and the rating, not had one of those before!)! I have just put the finishing touches to the Slugga boyz.

Here are some more pics to have a peek at the progress.

Once Photobucket has loaded the rest of the pictures I have, I'll put more on here. There's a couple of more elaborate conversions coming up. I have decided that 'Eavy weapons should be almost servitor like, and also that rather than give all the boyz stikkbombz, I created a stikkbomb launcher for the squad (he's rather bulky, but I like him) and a rokkit launcher in a similar chunky vein.

Edit- all the models are awaiting green stuff. I'm going to wait till I've got them all ready before I crack open the putty!

12-08-2009, 17:58
This looks really cool! While I think the conversions on your infantry will be 60+% of your armies look, being the bastardized form of the mechanicum it will live and die by the vehicle conversions. I don't you have anything to worry about, but I look forward to seeing you do some Kans and Killer Kans. I also think Loota's and deaf' koptas will be a must have, I can imagine too many good conversions coming out of all that.

12-08-2009, 18:15
Ahh, these boyz are just brilliant! I've seen lots of Meks converted with an Admech influence, but never an entire army of them! I'm really excited to see where this goes, keep it up!

12-08-2009, 20:47
Nice ideas, I especially like the bioniks scratchbuilds that I can loot...

I converted a lot of fantasy Black Orcs into 'Ard Boyz, and the addition of two ammo bandoliers (from the regular boyz sprue bitz) to one of the shoulderpads, and belt pouches over the chainmail butt do a lot to bring the ladz into the 40th Millenium.

Also, you could legally take a Burna for your Big Mek in Mega Armor (although the Slow & Purposeful means you'd still strike at the same time as a PowerKlaw) but it does fit the rule of cool...

Looking forward to more of your conversions.

anyway, I love these orks. awesome.....

Brilliant idea!! :)

Subscribed - I wanna see what other coolness you come up with. :D

13-08-2009, 21:51
I'm so glad I left these with you Sparks, theres no way I could have done them justice as you are. Love what youve done so far, particularly the Kommando based Nob.

If theres anything you want\need from me drop me a line and I'll endeavour to get it to you.

14-08-2009, 03:44
Thanks again for all the comments! quick replies

Brother Vogt- Do we know each other by any chance? (only assuming because our locations are the same, but I haven't lived there in years-too lazy to change it really!) If you want to reveal your identity secretly, send me a PM!

aka_mythos- I know what you mean, but I've not really had any ideas for vehicles besides one deff dread. There were a couple of killa kan mods (as bobby knows) involving grot pilots, and were/are amazing conversions, but not really big enough for kans IMO.

Frowbakk- this army is ruled by the rule of cool, as all armies should be! I think you'll like some of the ideas you'll see in the next few pics. If you want any breakdowns/tutorials on the bionik lootin, let me know.

Bobby- I'll stick with your forum name as you have with me, lol! I'm sure we could've churned out a few of these if we'd had any time to work together on them (for those who have read post 1, bobby is the one who bought the original army with me). The only bits I can think of right now are gubbins from bikers (do they come with spare exhausts/tubing/big shootas?) and did I send you a bag of shootas? what did I send you way back before xmas?

Anyway, enough banter as I'm sure you want to hear of all the wonderful progress I have made. I have been a very busy little mek over the last two days and now have the first 2 legal squads *does happy dance*

This is the Slugga Boyz, with Nob and Rokkit Launcha

Here are the models I haven't shown previously:

Rokkit Launcha

Stikkbomb Launcha

and his ammo pack:

'Clamps' (if you like futurama you'll know who this is!)

and finally the back of the first 'Orko-flajellant!'
(the pic of his front was deleted from my photobucket account by accident)

He has bionik legs/feet, marine arms, guitar string whips, and needs a bit of GS'ing on his mask to finish the job. If I don't go insane with the rest of the army, I feel a full mob of these might need doing!

Magos Errant
14-08-2009, 03:47
Great job, Sparks! Rokkit Launcher Ork is awesome looking! Excellent conversions.

14-08-2009, 04:03
Sorry for double posting, but I'm feeling productive at this silly hour in the morning!

Having shown you the Sluggaz, now time for the Shootaz! I realised I'm still in a bit of a limbo with the route for the army. There was a time on ebay where I was hunting down metal robed orcs/orks, as I think the robes are just as much a part of the Admek look as wires, etc. I have used 2 such models in this squad. I have justified it to myself as robes would only get in the way of choppin and fightin for the sluggas! I think I might save robes for characters/special weapons throughout the army.

Anyway, to show you what I mean, here is an unfinished Nob for the squad based on a fantasy Shaman fig (he still needs bionik bits to show him holding the weapon):

and his big shoota wielding friend:

Some of my favourite conversions are in this squad, namely this guy. I liked the head and pose, and gave him a souped up shoota to match (underslung stikkbombz ftw!)

And I really like the feel of this one too, just screams hard case to me somehow!

Last but not least:

I have started work on a new HQ for the army as well, an ordinary Big Mek. He came about after I found a rather interesting combination of a Tomb Spyder's head and Ghazhgkull's jaw. Pics to follow!

I definitely need to give my hands a rest for a day or 2 from converting tiny details, starting to get pains in my left little finger! Could just replace it with a bionik...

14-08-2009, 07:30
This is amazing stuff. The idea on itself is awesome, but the execution even holds up to it - something not that usual with things like this. So thumbs up, of course at least one mechanical one, and Waaagh! :D

Brother Vogt
14-08-2009, 09:59
Orksome progress Sparks.
Revelation PM sent btw.

Loving the shoota with underslung stikkbomb. Very M203.

Cant wait to see the Big Mek and other HQ. Keep up the good work!

14-08-2009, 10:42
Looking great so far! I really like the conversion, especially the one with the big lamp-thingy on his head! :D

14-08-2009, 11:26
This is a prime example of why orks are so freaking awesome, great thread. Lets see some painted!

14-08-2009, 23:06
@glenning- it's the tip of a hunter killer missile launcher! I've rounded off the missile though so that it's more like an eye. I am awaiting a new delivery of GS so I can put the finishing touches to his head.

First up, Big Mek progress-

I have used a warboss body, and a Tomb Spyder head stuck inside Ghaz's jaw plate. I think this creates a really creepy yet effective head for a budding Ad Mek! Again, he is awaiting more greenstuffing before he gets his undercoat.

A shot for scale:

A shot with his backpack- a servo harness with a variety of equipment (some yet to be added)

A shot with his shoota arm taken from a Mega Armoured Nob (I wanted Ghaz's but it doesn't fit with the servo pack)

His other arm will be holding a 'Bosspole' wrench thingy, which will be embedded in the ground. This wrench will include a Burna! (Rule of cool!)

The start of the Jawa grots:

Army Shot so far

These guys have all been sprayed. I'm just experimenting with a few basing schemes before I touch these ones! I'm also having a go with a couple of flesh tones on some test orks before I get going.

15-08-2009, 01:22
Sweet mother of all that is holy, they worship Gork, Mork, and the Omnissiah?!?!?!?!?!

15-08-2009, 09:20
and finally the back of the first 'Orko-flajellant!'
(the pic of his front was deleted from my photobucket account by accident)

the fact that you dont just re-up it makes me think that you upload photos and then delete them locally..

if so.. you fail at life

16-08-2009, 19:00
Looking amazing Parky!

Love the start of the Big Mek, looks like there is a lot of promise there. Knowing you it will be absolute genius!
Cant wait to see these guys in the flesh (plastic?). Will ahve to trott over your way when Im back up on my feet.

Got sny psint on them yet or been takin a break?

17-08-2009, 15:38
That big mek is awesome! :D

17-08-2009, 16:06
I love what you are doing here. Most of your conversion work is tremendous. I like the simple/subtle changes the best - the Mek with the whip, the shoota with the breather and the gretchin are my favorites.

I think it is easy to go over the top with ork conversions - and I am definitely guilty of it myself - but the shoota made from the old slaver model seems to be moving toward the "to many guns strapped on" side of the house.

I don't want to take away from the incredible build you have going - but sometimes less is more and more is less. Thanks for letting us watch as you go!

17-08-2009, 18:27
Bobby- they've all been sprayed apart from the mek - haven't found the motivation to finish him yet, bored of greenstuffing! New GS has arrived though, so expect progress by thurs (ie. when Lucy gets back!)

@stormboy- I know what you mean. I just want a big shoota for the mob and wasn't sure if one old autocannon did the job. I've just snapped off the extension, so will get a new pic up for everyone.

Doesn't look like I'll get the army done by the 29th now though :( Got a dwarf army to finish for a tournament on the 28th!

17-08-2009, 18:56
Very nice force thus far, subbed :D

17-08-2009, 20:06
Mad as a bucket of fish-squigs. I don't usually rate plogs this early, but this one's definitely 5*!

22-08-2009, 06:13
One of the most original Ork armies I've seen, and I'm sure you know how many there are out there. Looking forward to seeing some paint on these guys along with whatever other conversions you come up with!

22-09-2009, 18:11
i really like the idea (always loved the idea of adding machinery to fixs/enhance the body). and nicely done too (and that coming from a guy who hates orks, no offense m8 :))...

04-10-2009, 18:06
Progress has been made, albeit very slow progress. The first 2 squads have been sprayed, and half of them have had the bases and drybrushing done. I got a bit carried away and started painting things that still need GS'ing (namely the orko flagellant). I've also finally decided on a skin tone. I was trying the Eavy Metal scheme, but it kept coming out as too light. I think I'm going to use snot green with sunburst yellow.

@Pekel- thanks, although I think the dinosaur and beer catachans are an equally original concept that you've conveyed well

Cheers synapse for the comments, coming from a fellow ork converter that means loads!

@Spar666rawk- my pc's being slow, but I like the skelly warriors that have popped up!Thanks for the comments, updates soon

I was surprised to see this back on page 1 as well, I was expecting myself to be the one to resurrect it!

05-10-2009, 04:57
Skarsnik as a banner bearer looks excellent when are you planning to get some paint on him?

I'm surprised you haven't used more black orcs in the army so far. They already come covered in armour plates, most of them in such a way they you could easily make into robo-orks. Just an idea I bet you've already thought of :)

30-10-2009, 15:32
Update! Half term is a wonderful thing, although I've now left myself with a lot of 'proper' work to do! There's a local painting competition and I started off with a Lizardman model I've been working on and off for a year. However again I got bored/distracted and had a go at my favourite model in the ork army so far.

Here are the results from my efforts. So far this guy's taken around 12 hours and has about another 3/4 hours left on him. Not sure what colour to do the base, although I'm probably going with the same grey as the sand. He still needs his boots, the yellow and some little touch ups here and there. Without further ado....:

@Warhound- it was indeed Terry's batch of Orks (and the rest of his collection) that I acquired about 3 years ago now! Top bloke but like you say, suffered from 'staffdiscount'shinyitis a few times!

I had heard that you'd given him a few lessons, and his painting definitely came on(although looking back, some of it might have been yours, I dunno!). I remember being miffed that I wasn't in Bath at the time you were thinking about giving lessons, nearly made a trip on the train from wherever I was at the time! Still, good to see you here commenting and congrats on the GDs this year. I've been meaning to enter seriously for years now but never a)been in the country or b) able to make it for financial reasons.

Great idea and great conversions! This was a joy to look at.

05-12-2009, 23:14
Nice work. Loving the concept and carried out with a flare for the surreal - how the hell do you even think up some of those models (a two wheeled attack squig for god's sake). You definitely need a squad of gyro-stabilised mono-wheeled orks! Maybe one day have to face it off against my Skitarii. Great smooth paint work by the way.

Later Honky.

Ah.. Makes me want to finish my Adeptuz Mekkanikuz...
Didnīt touch it since early '06.

06-12-2009, 20:45
Sparks, this is truly inspired work!!! I have written in green to express my approval and support- 5 out 5, mate!

This is what would happen if Orks captured a Forge World.

I love the stikk bomb launcher, the Ork flagellants, the arm conversions, jeez I just love the whole d ang setup. This is why its so much fun collecting Orks, the only limit to conversions is your imagination.

Could you please give me the recipe for the blue? Tis very nice.

Subbed :chrome:

06-12-2009, 21:51
@Cerebralerebus - glad you found the thread, hopefully we'll be making progress at about the same rate so we'd be able to play at the same time! I've been planning mono stabilised orks for a while, and I think you can see a tracked cybork in one of the pictures (although I'm not 100% happy with him, he's done and primed!)

Mr. Ragsta, thanks for chiming in! Blue is quite tedious and involves a lot of very thin layers. The models are undercoated black, then thin coats of ultramarine blue are applied until it's even. Then I wash it with a couple of coats of midnight blue. When the wash is dry, midnight blue is mixed with regal blue and applied thinly to the recesses. I gradually work my way up through regal back to ultramarine, and then mix with space wolves grey to highlight. I've been practising using 'juices' on these guys and it seems to be improving the overall blending/layering no end!

Sadly I've had no time to hobby in the last few weeks, although I need to post finished pictures of the model above (finished in the top 3 in a local painting competition, but lost out to Eternity's wraithlord, also on these forums). Will try and get a bit more done and possibly get a normal Boy finished to show everyone how it's coming along. If anyone's got ideas for vehicles, please send them my way!

06-12-2009, 23:16
Kanz made from Sentinels are a good option for vehicles. As is basing models on Chimaeras, with lots of gubbinz. Use them as Battlewaggons and take either lobbas (big Rokkits) or Zapp Gunz (experimental design deff rayz).

I went for Servitorz in HS as well: Grot Artillery with the big gunz builds into several night goobos as it were.

And of course you need:
Servo Skullz

05-01-2010, 21:03
Right, it's the obligatory 'this thread's not quite dead' post that usually seems to happen when this thread gets to page 5 on the lists! I start thinking, hmm, I should probably do something about it and get modelling/painting!

To whet your appetites, I basically just cleared out the modelbits.co.uk ork section along with some other surprises such as Scout biker grenade launchers! All in all around Ģ50 worth of just bits alone, whoops! Bobby, if you're reading this, I will still be getting that FW biker boss off of you, but payment might be arriving towards the end of Jan. Secondly, if you have ork bits that I sent you, could they be returned so that I can put my new purchases to use?

@the thread's followers- I have had a little idea for my big guns, they will basically be like the sentinel platforms as found in the Sisters codex, basically a pair of walking legs with a gun strapped to it. I will be using night gobbo fanatics 'pulling' it from the front, and am debating whether to add platforms on the back for more gobbo fun. As for vehicles, I'm still not really sure what to do, nor for other units. I have had the idea of doing Lootaz as either a gun servitor style unit with a mek with da kontrolz or as a unit of orkz with remote kontrol gun platforms. Could always do 1 of each I suppose!

If anyone's interested, I can put up the final finished pic of the above model, just let me know!

05-01-2010, 21:39
Is that a rhetorical question?

For goodness sake, man, of COURSE we want pictures!!!

Personally I would love to see Gobbos on platforms but that's just me. Your idea about remote controlled gun servitors is cool, I prefer that one :)

For a battlewagon perhaps you could have some kind of massive tellyporta array on the back to represent Orks beaming in from far away... Sorry, I feel somewhat devoid of inspiration. Your ork servitor skulls are cool tho!! Hey, how about a BIG one of those to represent a Valk? :P

05-01-2010, 21:48
Sadly those skullz aren't mine. I have ordered some of the marine ones to loot in the near future, and did have a go at making one of my own out of guitar wire, etc. Ignore the base, it's the one used on the Waagh Banna bearer but has holes in for pins so the skull could stand up for a photo!

As for the suggestions, I think I might put one mad grot on the back or something, wait and see when the bits arrive ;)

I may also 'loot' (the ork word for borrow!) an idea from Cerebralerebus with his floating throne for the mek in control of the servitors! Think orky, small obliterators (boy sized) commanded by a mad mek in his throne of controliness!

Hey Sparks.
Lovin the progress. Looking very cool.
If you need any ork bitz then PM me or email and will see what I can do.

08-01-2010, 23:48
The bits have arrived, and coupled with getting 'Mechanicus' for crimbo I'm in full enthusiastic mode. I've tried bodging a few things together with blue-tac, the results can be seen below!

Example of the sorts of bits I ordered (I have around 10 of the cog style sights, and the shoulder pads are semi-cog like)

My idea for some kind of Praetorian (to be used as Flash Gitz). It will eventually look like an Ork version of the picture on the front of the Mechanicus cover. I will be ordering a lot more of the Stormboy Nob body in the near future! They will have robes like the Big Mek and possibly the odd hood, etc. I have tried the idea of attach an exhaust poking out of their back, as seen in pic 2. This pic is intended to convey the concept rather than being anything like the intended product!

A Zzzap gun with grot 'puller'

A random boy

Not 100% sure what to use these defiler parts for, but I've attached a grot pilot as a beginning...

More random ideas in the pipe line, I've just found out that parts of the necron gauss gun look great on Ork forearms, so that'll feature a few times for sure!

Enjoy and any comments always welcome!

that Crog body looks grate. where did u get it from ?

uuuuu, Necrons. Now we're talking:evilgrin:

hope u get pic soon

ps: and yeas, could u try to get more clear pictures. that last one cant be seen at all....

all in all - hope for a son update

cheers :D

Fantastic,great conversions,and I mean what I say!!!!!!!!

19-01-2010, 21:46
I'd subscribed to this thread but didn't get any updates - I assumed you had gone to ground.

These are looking great. I can't believe how prolific you are. Can't wait to see what the grot-piloted defiler turns into.

20-01-2010, 13:55
WOW! Probably the best converted Ork army I've seen in a long time. Great work (and also subscribed).

A very original army here, its amazing how many different ork forces you can see and still be amazed by the variety of themes amongst them, keep it up!

25-01-2010, 20:34
Ok, small update. I've managed to complete a couple more bits and pieces. I've got an Ork with a shoulder mounted gun underway, a pair of bionik legs with a necron knee joint poking out from the fabric, and an arm that becomes a grabba claw at the elbow! My main gripe was spending over an hour on the mek and the flash git's robes and didn't really get anywhere. I've since got out two Dark Angel robed models to see what the robes 'should' look like, and I'm not too far off the mark, so I'll try again when I've got a bit of free time!

25-01-2010, 23:12
post pictures man. we all wona see some pictures, dont we guys :)

plzz, plzzz. . . pretty plz :D, just kidding post when u find some time for it

as always, looking forward to seeing more stuff on this blog

26-01-2010, 01:58
A load of great ideas here, cracking stuff. And painted blue, very proppa. The grot pilot is a great touch, keep it up.

26-01-2010, 19:38
Another tantalising update without pictures. I got a bit carried away after payday and ended up buying the tracks, hull and side pieces of a baneblade, oops! All for around half the price of an actual one. Thinking of turning it into a mobile mek's shop as his own personal ride!

On the subject of Gyrowheeled orks, how should they be joined at the hip do you think? Planning my biker unit you see!

26-01-2010, 23:28
pics! as for the wheeled orks i don't have any ideas, just be careful, because i've seen quite a few try it and the result ends up being retarded

Sparks. Dude. I see you have the same fever I have. Get some money in the bank and then spend it on new toys (hence why I now have a Mega Dread!!)

Loving how this is coming along. Think you need to concentrate on one unit/thing etc at a time though. We want to see finished pieces and paint!!

As for the gyro-wheeled orks, depends on how you intend the whole thing to look/feel and how far down you want to attach it. Thought of doing a sketch for a feel of it and so we can help further? Although I think that a couple of p-card pipes attached with a bolt could work. Kind of like the 2nd ed guy?

23-02-2010, 21:40
What size wheels are you thinking for the mono-wheels? I would consider using a large wheel and will a mud guard price attached at either side of the axle (like the front of a marine bike). I would then get the biggest plastic orc models and attach at the waist onto a little cuppola - possibly with pintle mounted shootas. The orks should be big to justify the stats of bikers (considering there will be substantially less metal than a bike). Huge exhausts of an engine on the back. Or possibly all that would look cr*p but I'd like to see a mock up.

23-02-2010, 21:50
Now this is a NICE army! Really great idea and execution, which, as somebody said, is unusual. Subscribed and rating it tops, it's just that well executed. The log could however do with some more painted stuff, seeing as what little you've posted looks nothing short of incredible!

Keep up the great work,

23-02-2010, 21:52
This is a very nice thread, with lots of win and very cool ideas in it.

But, it lacks one thing ! You need to paint :D

23-02-2010, 23:11
@ cerebral- we have very similar ideas (again) as to what the bikers should look like. The only wheels I have at the moment are large normal wheels, but does anyone know if the battlewagon wheels are actually fairly large?

As to the others, thanks for the nice comments. Painting progress has been slow, and as there's been nothing exciting save for some drybrushing I've decided not to post any pics! Once the first couple are well underway I'll post them up together.

On a random side note, I have enough squigs to make a unit of robo-squigs, but I'm not 100% sure what they might count as. I'm thinking of doing them with rotor blades to allow them to fly, so that I could have counts as stormboys but I'm not sure. I've also been improving my small scale plasticard skills to start producing my own servo arms, so expect some slow updates of more unpainted stuff in the near future as I get ideas out of my head!

24-02-2010, 00:32
I love this project! As imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I'm going to be adding lots of bioniks to my orks inspired by your conversions. Great work!

26-02-2010, 20:09
Just noticed your warboss. He looks great (and ripe for painting).

One really random suggestion would be to have one of your robo-squigs mounted in a robotic ork body with him stuffed in the belly with little control sticks (give him some little arms). The thing I have in mind is krang from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Squig Power!

Just a thought.

26-02-2010, 21:21
I think you've just given me ideas for killa kans. An over sized set of hydraulic squig legs with exhausts and what have you with a squig hard wired into the body 'controlling' it in the same way as grots are supposed to. Squigs in a tin shell, squig power indeed! (If only squig had two syllables!)

That warboss may end up as a regular meganob. I've got three ghazghkulls including that one to use up and I always have enjoyed the idea of 'upsizing' my ork army (i.e. warboss models for nobs, that sort of thing) and wouldn't mind carrying it through to the end now I have the bits! Given that I still don't have a proper list I may end up taking two big Meks, not sure! Sadly you are right, he is ripe for painting though, got no excuses there!

26-02-2010, 23:39
Got a bit carried away with that concept...

27-02-2010, 07:18
amazing digital design skills. can't think of a better use of squigs. i personally wouldn't do arms, but whatever.

27-02-2010, 11:01
Lol, this was done in paint so I'm surprised by the compliment but take it gladly! I used the copy and paste button to get the legs done though :)

I know what you mean about arms, but I'm doing this to kan size and they need a gun weapon as well as a combat weapon. Perhaps I could mount it above the head to look like a 'horn'? or have a pintle one with a grot on top holding on for dear life?

Also, final question, top jaw on or off?

28-02-2010, 14:20
I say keep the top jaw on, otherwise it looks too much like a sentinel.

Heh heh, were you inspired bu Mutant Ninja Turtles? That looks like a Mouser (http://www.e-life.youthinks.com/picture/tmnt/tmnt_mouser1.jpg)!

Would you be modelling the legs so they look like they're running forward? I think getting some motion into the models themselves would be strongly recommended to get the Squig Power look you want.

Personally, I like the idea of a grot hanging from a pintle weapon. But a few Snotlings would be even cooler. Doubt you can find those tho...

Keep up the good work!

06-03-2010, 20:21
I have just spent a total of 5 hours just painting the flesh and clothing of ONE boy. This army is going to take a while...! Pics up later in the week when I borrow the 10mp camera as opposed to the rubbish 4mp one I have at the moment!

Squig kan is underway, one leg and the lower jaw have been shoved together. Just looking at parts to create the rest of it now!

06-03-2010, 21:01
Very sexy. Got my pulse beating in all the right places.

07-03-2010, 21:50
And because you've all been a very patient bunch, progress pics!

My local GW is having a squad painting competition at the end of March. Whilst I don't think I'll have anywhere near enough time, I'm using it as some kind of motivation. Hence me using a photo frame as a potential display base. Picked 3 of them up for 99p in Wilkinsons, should look fine when sprayed black, no?

13-03-2010, 17:04
I love the Ork with the Dreadnought arm :D

14-03-2010, 22:47
Hello all,

I've nearly finished 'rocketface'- I'm down to painting the brown bits/straps, and need to rethink the parts I've tried in brass. I've also managed the blues on 3 other models, and started to add some freehand cogs to the more robed models. I will have photos in a day or two to show you how they're coming along. Still unsure on getting them all done in under a fortnight, but I've given myself a fighting chance!

23-03-2010, 00:11
These are looking great Sparks the skin on the arms especially so (might have to up my game with the Skitarii afterall). Loving the "Krang" killer Kan concept pics. I would keep the jaw on.

Just thought it would be great to do a unit of albino madboys! I'm sure you could work in a Orkanicus excuse (possibly lobotomised "Orkomatons" controlled by a radical mek surgeon and prone to breaking program - give them steel craniums down over the eyes like Inq Damien 1427 with little remote control nodes on top). If you don't I will!

23-03-2010, 20:28
Well, I've already got the Orko-flagellant, and was planning on making a unit of those, so perhaps I can just pale up the skin instead?

Lol, and there's nothing like a bit of friendly rivalry to spur our painting on is there? I have a feeling yours will come together once you get back in the groove though!

Love the konverzionz love the paint'. Love it all.

24-03-2010, 12:21
Really nice concept, and the models look great, the power fist ork nob is my fav :)

24-03-2010, 17:36
I have to be honest; its not very often i venture into the heretical forums that are the Xenos Proejct Logs, but when i do and i see stuff like this, it makes me want to renounce the emperor!

Fantastic work fella, a great concept for the army as a whole!! :)

27-03-2010, 19:53
Update time!

Whilst I sadly did not get the mob painted for the competition today, I have been making very slow progress. I have almost got a whopping three models done in the army!

Rocketface man update- Not too sure on the brass ammo casing. I wanted some brass to break up the boring silver, however it's almost a bit too distracting. What do you think?

Boy number 2 - just needs a few more straps and small annoying details left. The strapping on the gun is a bit brighter in real life and does actually contrast, unlike in the photo!

Close up of the blending on his foot. I was really happy with this, but again the camera leaves a lot to be desired!

The three closest lads to completion

A trial cog pattern that I'm thinking of adding to all the robed models in some form or another:

And finally, a poor flash shot of the boyz, but it perhaps actually gives a truer version of the actual colours!

28-03-2010, 12:01
I like the brass, personally :) While I like the cog design idea for the robes it seems like a bit of an afterthought slapping it onto the dge there... Perhaps similar patterns across the entire robe? Good idea tho!

I find it unfortunate that you chose Orks considering your lengthy (yet very nice) painting style!

You'll just have to use lots of vehicles and elite units to keep the numbers down :( Hehehe!

28-03-2010, 13:32
Lol, I know, I should've picked grey knights or something, but I've ALWAYS wanted an Ork army done properly, even if it's just for showboating!

On the cog design, this was intended as a test one to get some opinion on. I am more than happy to add another one or two at some stage to the same model. The model is sculpted in such a way that this was the only flat bit and did not require extra shading and so on! I also wanted to veer away a little from the trim pattern you see on Imperial Mechanicus as the Orks aren't that organised/fussy! What about the colour of the cog, does it work?

I have solved my problem with the brass by adding a black line between the halves, and it now looks a little duller.

Vehicles are on my list, I wasn't going to make my battlewagon that expensive points wise, but I think I'm going to have to!

29-03-2010, 01:12
Looking good.

I like the cog, I'm not to sure about adding more to the same model though as it may become a bit crowded.

For the dread I would say the top pic looks better, maybe orkifying it a little more will stop all the nay sayers. Dunno why someone thought it looked like a sentinel.....

02-04-2010, 23:46
Pretty insane conversions, very nice :D

09-04-2010, 16:13
@Yayale- not sure which Dread you're referring to, as I haven't posted any pictures of my Dred designs...yet :) Unless you're on about the squiggakan?

I've got a new plaything to show off but photobucket is being very rude and not letting me upload anything. Anyone know of any other options?

Hint- it's got tracks, longer than a land raider, and may just be using parts from a hairdryer :D

09-04-2010, 17:58
Yeh thats the one. Is it a skullkrusha perchance? It is a skullkrusha in the apoc book which they converted from a baneblade rite?

Wait a min, hairdryer parts? is it a fighta bomba?

09-04-2010, 18:08
It's not a skullkrusha, nor a fighta bomma, both good guesses though! It's my mek's battlewagon with a souped up engine :)

09-04-2010, 22:30
Oo sounds good. I can imagine there's some nice gubbinz in there. The fan blade and the heating element for starters :p My hair clippers broke recently so I think I may scavenge them for parts for ork stuff :D

10-04-2010, 03:47
All I can hear in my hear is a grating metallic 'WAAAAAAGGGHH!!!'. Makes me grin.

Fantastic man, keep it up!

11-04-2010, 11:14
Photobucket's finally allowed me to post these highlights of my mekkish workings...(had to go via email though, not the quickest of routes!)

The beginnings of a looted track...

The new engine

To give a better sense of scale

'I iz fixin it boss!'

And last but not least, if I can file down the fan enough, I'm thinking I'll stick this over the middle of it. Thoughts?

I may be entering into a 750pt league soon, so that may force my hand in getting some more models built, including a dread. Not too sure yet though!

Cheers lads!

11-04-2010, 12:48
Great idea! I think you should leave out the admech skull plate though, looks too imperial and covers up the enormously orky huge fan!

11-04-2010, 13:00
realy an good idea converting the orks to ad mechs, they are dumb enough to prey to machines. and you made them look good.

11-04-2010, 15:08
That really is a souped up engine lol, it did make me chuckle :D. I love the ork hand sticking out the side as well :D

12-04-2010, 19:38
Hold it right there Sparks. Not only do I agree with the sentiments of the kindly man above about the ad mech sign looking too imperial. It just so happens to be the part I've been looking everywhere for (FW stopped selling). If you need a cash injection sometime you know where to turn.

Great fan by the way.

12-04-2010, 20:30
i love this plog, awesome minis an a few good chuckles.

as for that ad mech sign, i'd suggest making an orky one. perhaps cutting up an extra ork head an then adding some bionics to copy the same look. of course it would be smaller though.

12-04-2010, 22:32

Get some plasticard, copy the old metal ork nob waagh! banner, still sold i believe, then admech it up a bit, give it a bionik eye or summat.

12-04-2010, 22:41
I already have plans for an orky cog design, I'll show you the paper prototypes (no point in wasting plasticard!) hopefully tomorrow. However, it will not be placed on the rear fan :) I'm now working on getting the second track in place before I get to the tricky job of sorting the planned elaborate hull area out! I've also been working on a new mark of Jawa grot that I'm very happy with (in fact I've spent more time thinking about the final look of that than I have my battlewagon!), which will have its own photo tomorrow!

And Law, I'll see that we come to some sort of arrangement in the future regarding the bits, I don't think I'll find a use for it. It is lovely though!

17-04-2010, 19:21
Been away to Edinburgh for the last few days, but having gone on a 7 hour road trip to avoid the ash cloud I'm back with updates!

Right Rear Track details:

Right Front track details:

The Zzap gun:

The planned location of the zzap gun:

The planned modifcation (with paper) of the hull and where the cog pattern will sneak in:

The idea is that the big shootas and/or rokkit launchas will be manned by gunners standing on the cog patterns. The main hull bit will be used for the mek's workshop. As far as transporting goes with this beast, I'm kind of hoping my opponents will be distracted by the cool stuff to not notice the lack of room for Boyz!

18-04-2010, 03:54
This looks awesome as usual \.

12-05-2010, 20:28
Sparks. What is the barrel to that zzap gun made from? Everything seems to have gone quiet everywhere. Any progress?

13-05-2010, 12:16
Looking really nice, I like the barrel, however the tip looks a bit wonky, it might just be the pics though.

13-05-2010, 20:35
Hello people! Everything has slowed up a bit as school's got a bit busier. I have been trying to get a couple of the new blood angels characters done as well to sell on fleabay, and as always these grand plans take much more effort than originally planned! (There's a thread on that in General painting discussion).

Again I've been carried away with buying bits for this monstrosity and I basically need an afternoon where the missus is away so I can make a massive mess on my modelling area!

@Cerebral- the barrel's a mixture of the chimney from one of the cities of death kits, and the end of an old Eldar weapon. There's a bit of plastic tubing to make the join a bit smoother. I then stuck smaller bits around the weapon and will add a lot more wire and gubbins when it's stuck down more securely.

@Yayale- it is a bit wonky, but only from one certain angle, etc. It doesn't show much in real life.

Off topic- 20,000 views, woop!

14-06-2010, 18:01
Off topic- 20,000 views, woop!

But how many of those were you?

14-06-2010, 20:53
Clearly I'm not the only one keeping an eye it then, given that this was in the depths of page 5 at least, lol. I am holding out on new pictures as I have started a similar blog elsewhere and haven't had the time to update this one yet. Hopefully find a bit of time soon towards the end of the term!

Deff Korps
14-06-2010, 21:04
wow, truly inspirational stuff here man, the conversions are really nicely done and to top it all off the painting is also top-notch...
I also really enjoy the fact that rather than painting them red (like pretty much every other adeptus orkanicus ive seen on the net) you painted them blue like deffskulls, as if they were looted!
Good job, looking forward to updates on the skullhamma

Brother Alexos
14-06-2010, 23:52
I think that adding a crane, or some form of towing mekanizm should do alot to increase the Orkanicus feel of this. I think that if this army is led by a Big Mek, he should have some way of gettin' the best gubbinz first. When I saw the really big tank, I saw a giant Kannon on the front, as well as a big Cargo-bay esque area in the back. I imagined that the Cargo bay would be a mobile Mek's Shop, where hundereds of Grots would pile in and dismantle any vehicle that the mek wanted to orkify.

My thoughts, hope this helps.

18-06-2010, 18:56
looks great I will hopefully post pic tommarrow of my termie maga nobs and warboss in maga armor built around the starter box dreadnought. I will be stealling some of your ideas for my loaters

23-06-2010, 23:58
liking the sounds of those meganobs, I shall have to take a look at your thread. Also wheres the progress? not that i can talk lol (bows head in shame).

24-06-2010, 21:59
Well, seeing as you asked so nicely :P

@ Brother Alexos. I think you're absolutely right. If I wasn't so eager when I first made it, I would have widened the hull a bit more. I'm a bit worried things might look a bit too cluttered with a crane. You did give me the random idea of a bits vacuum stuck to the front under the hull though instead of a deff rolla, and an area at the front where the bits are in a heap.

Will need to work on that one though.

The original plan was to have a set of mech arms working on little bits and pieces, but I'm still not sure. For the first time I'm actually a little worried about WYSIWYG, which is mental and preventing me from doing the swarm of grots throughout the tank!

I'm in the middle of writing my first ever school reports, which has turned out to be the equivalent of a dissertation (around the 20000 word mark), so hobby time is non-existant till around mid August at the moment!

Progress was made a while ago on the battlewagon, so here are the fuel tanks:

And here is a blurry pic of a mock up with the cannon

25-06-2010, 15:34
Grot is great! I think the Nightgoblin bodies lend nicely into 40k for gretchen - their robes give some flexibility and you did a great job making this guy look unique and bringing him into the world of 40k.

Can't wait to see what you do with the boy - the cabling looks good - how does it look in the back?

25-06-2010, 22:01
Looking nice, the fuel tank set up is a nice touch. I cant remember if the fan was meant to e cooling an engine or actually powering the tank.

The gretchin looks rather good, it's a simple yet effective conversion, nice job :)

11-07-2010, 14:03
Hello very patient followers! I've found a bit of modelling time, so I've added to the horde. I now have 14 slugga boyz and 12 shootaz, as well as 5 grots! Why, it's practically an army!

I've got one really busy week of work left, then a not so busy one, so I'll be updating a bit more often in the weeks to come (before I go off travelling in August!). Here are the pics, or it hasn't happened ;)

A very random shoota, using Tau bits as an enhanced 'gitfinda' and parts from a watch to strengthen his arms.

I have recently acquired a whole bunch of Robogear stuff, including 4 of these lovely engines that are crying out to become massive deffkopta replacements. Any suggestions to them will be welcome!

Enjoy and comment away!

Make em gliders with the orks in harnesses below!

12-07-2010, 01:47
wow, from the first part of the thread my thoughts were sort of "so so" however with this new stuff, I think that I might have hit on a jackpot of orky goodness! : )

12-07-2010, 19:02
@dasqueek- other people have suggested the same, and I hadn't thought of that option but I like it! I can put the weapons under the wings and then some kind of servitor style Ork underneath.

In other news, I've been using the Runtherd body to make a second Rokkit Launcha 'gun-servitor' for the slugga boyz. Getting the rokkit to stay stuck took around an hour though! I've also had a go at kitbashing my own Ork Nob style head with an exhaust pipe taking up half the head. Pretty pleased with the results but no pic as yet.

28-09-2010, 21:59
OK, 2 and a half months later, an update! I was kinda keeping this one secret as it was a GD project. Sadly it didn't quite make the finals of GD but was very close. I have finally finished my Big Mek and here's the last WIP pic I took of him before Games Day. If anyone was looking in the cabinets I was in the 40k Monster category on the middle shelf, middle cabinet, next/near to all the ones photographed for the GW site. Didn't actually get any feedback, should've asked really, oh well.

It really pushed on my painting though and I'm grateful for it. I'm not keen on the yellow for the rest of the army, but this was solely to generate some cool contrasts for the Golden Demon. Anyway, expect other updates for the whole army in the future now that he's done!

I've managed to get some paint on my models! I've based and sprayed the last of my shoota and slugga boyz, so I can start making a dent on the drybrushing parts. Pics of my favourite model so far:

I know he's an amazing 3 point model, but I don't care. My grots are going to be the most lovingly painted 30 pt squad in the world, mwahaha!

That blue is Stunning!

Care to tell how its done?

Sorry, forgot, there was a photo taken of my model with wrench attached. Someone thought it was worthy of taking a photo (I came across it while looking at someone's GD pictures, felt very flattered and humbled that mine was singled out by someone!)

@Dreff - No probs, blue is as follows:

Basecoat Ultramarine blue (two-three thin coats till you get a good flat covering)
Very thin glazes/washes gradually towards the recesses with Regal Blue/Ultra mix, then Regal Blue, then Regal and Midnight Blue (a precious commodity!), finally midnight blue in the recesses.

Then I work my way back up to the highlights, starting with a very thin regal/ultra mix to smooth out any previous blending issues. Then its back to ultra, and mixed with Space Wolves Grey to keep that blue tone in. At the end I do a very thin glaze of Regal/Midnight to tie it all together.

Sorry if that's a bit more in depth than you were expecting!

@vulcha- cheers!

Thanks! But that is a bit too long progress to me to paint :D Maybe when I enter to GD myself, I could give it a try... ;)

I really like this army, it's very original!
