View Full Version : clairvoyants post-heresy non-true-scale marines

I think i've covered all of the usual items to be included in a painting log - has my name in the thread title (not sure why this is relevant), is not a pre-heresy army (unlike everyone elses it seems! :D) and is not true-scale because a) i don't like true scale and b) i'm not clever enough

Ok, so pre-amble done.

This is my plog for my crimson fists.
As none of you may remember, i didn't play in 3rd or 4th editions of the game, so all my marine models (apart from the black reach models) are old.
I've then made a few extra ebay purchases and some digging around in my bitz box to make an army of all Mk6 models.

I used to play ultramarines/dark angels/homebrew but this time i'm going for the poster boys of old!

First thing i had to do was strip the paintwork on the old plastics using fairy power spray.
I've done a few, but still plenty more to do.

As i'm at work, i can't show any pics just yet, but i can list what the army consists of so far:

4 tactical squads with missile launcher and flamer (RTB01 marines)
1 devastator squad part way through being converted (RTB01 marines and metal heavy weapons from 2nd ed)
1 Assault squad part way through being converted (RTB01 marines, 2nd ed plasma pistol, latest edition chainswords, maxmini jumppacks)
1 terminator squad with assault cannon (original metal terminators)
1 terminator assault squad - 3 x TH/SS, 2 x Lightning claw (mix of original metals and later 2nd ed metals)
Land speeder with assault cannon and heavy bolter (2nd ed metal ravenwing landspeeder with rtb01 crew)
razorback (original version with lascannon and plasma guns)
predator in need of repair (original version)
2 land raiders in need of repair (original version)
dreadnought (black reach version)
captain (black reach with mk6 head)
attack bike with multimelta (original metal bike)
bike squad (original metal bikes)

I have loads of old mk7 and mk8 marines too, plus character models, but i want to stick to mk6 for now.
Maybe i'll use them later on

I've managed to get some photos, apologies for the quality.

This shows the horrid mess of models i have to work with.
7 squads of rtb01s and i have another 2 squads coming so i'll be pretty close to an entire company!

This next pic is of the captain with his head lopped off and a mk6 head instead. Its just blutacked in place for now, as i want to get hold of a new mk6 helmet as the detail will be more defined and will fit in with the rest of the model.

Next we have my terminators, some stripped, some not yet. I prefer the original termies to the new ones. The new plastics don't have the little grilles on the cheeks - random thing to dislike, but there you go!

And finally is a couple of test subjects while i work out the colour scheme.
I've used regal blue with enchanted blue and skull white highlights.
My regal blue is a fairly old pot, and my enchanted is almost solid, so i need to replace them, and hope that both colours are still in existence. Its really annoying when they do away with really useful colours (i'm looking at you evil sunz red and ash waste grey!)

old skool RT models - check
non-truescale - check
post-heresy - check

Looking like its gonna be an interesting log. Test schemes look nice.

Good luck!

Not much to report as the army has been shoved in a box while i sort out my cellar so i have room to put up my 3 new shelving units for armies.

However, i have managed to rebase the terminator assault squad onto 40mm bases and the devastator squad has its heavy weapons now - a lascannon, 2 missile launchers and one heavy plasma gun. The assault squad also has its new jump packs (from maxmini) and they look great!

Also in the planning stage is how i'm going to re-attach the lascannons to the land raider as they were removed during 2nd edition in order to give a nice 4pt tank :D
I may use some spare leman russ sponsons, but they'll need adapting as they don't quiet fit. And the heavy bolters seem to have been lost in the mists of time

A lot of logs get skipped over by me, especially Marine logs, as I`m tired of seeing all the fads. Granted a lot of the artists are quite good and my discrimination is no shot to them, I`m just tired of it. Reading the title of your post (like a lot of others) I couldn`t help but look in, and I`m pleased with what I see. A down to earth, no gimmicks (other than the title :P) plog. Good show friend, I`ll be watching.

finally i have some photos of some progress.

Still very much WIP, but it gives an indication, and me some inspiration to finish them!

First up, the assault squad:
Chainswords are from modern badly painted marines which i bought off ebay so i could hack them up for spares, backpacks are the maxmini ones and everything else is old stuff

Next is the lieutenant
I painted him up quickly to use as a captain as the black reach captain was taking too long to get to a rough gaming standard - damn detail!

Needs a *lot* of tidying up, but its usable for now

tactical squad
Mostly done-ish.
None of my marines have been nicely based yet as i'll do that once i have a half decent force and then blitz through the lot.

The terminator lord model is just a sergeant for my assault terminators, and the lightning claw model is a 1994 metal terminator.

a bit more work done on the army.
The transfers are too fiddly to work with and also give a glossy finish so i decide i would just hand-paint all the fist icons.
The downsides are it takes ages to do, they're not uniform and some of them look a bit naff.
I've also been checking the original painting guide that came with the space marine paint set (how many of you remember that?) and so the sergeants have the correct forearm insignia and the squads all have the correct squad markings. I might cheat when it comes to the devastators and use the modern devastator symbol rather than the old blasty flame thing which is bound to go wrong when i attempt to paint it!

There's still a bit of tidying to do on the assault squad before i move on to the next half of the squad, but at least the army is starting to take shape.

And now the requisite photos:

The first goal is to get the basic 1500 list painted which comprises the following:

3 Tactical squads
Devastator squad
Assault Squad
Terminator Assault squad
Attack bike

After that, i'll work on the normal terminator squad, another tactical squad, the scouts, the dread and the landraider.

Im liking the look of these guys, a good ol RT army, you cant beat 'em! I really like those assault marines.

Supremely good thread title, brilliant start on the army.

Will follow with interest.

Started work on an old land raider to give it a front hatch and reattach lascannons that were removed many years ago.

WIP but it gives an idea of how its coming along

Rogue trader models are always a good thing and who doesn't love the old style of jump pack???

That land raider is looking pretty good too. Although some of the plasticard isn't lining up right and i'd suggest not using the ammo crate for the turret; it looks too much like..... well, a crate.

Numpty here moved all his pics into folders on photobucket and forgot about the links to them here. I'll fix that one day.

Meanwhile, i've been making some progress on the army. The latest is the command squad made from old mk6 metal torsos, the new command squad frame and the crimson fists bits packs for shoulder pads and backpacks. Oh and a tank icon for the banner top. The other tank icons have been used on my vehicles and dread. I don't think they're in this plog so when i get round to fixing the other links, i'll shove those in here too.

But anyway, here's the command squad as it looks today

wow, i really should update this!

Since the command squad, i've finished both the tactical squads shown above, 2 more tactical squads, 3 land raiders, 3 predators, 2 attack bikes, the terminator squad, plus a second termie squad, the sternguard, pedro, jump pack chaplain, termie librarian, 3 rhinos, the razorback and based everything!

I'll try to get some new pics up this evening and then show the bits i'm working on at the moment - namely the bike squad and the master of the forge on a jetbike carrying a conversion beamer :D

ok, a couple of pics as promised :)

That looks really great all together like that, I just missed the RT marines when I started so they don't have the nostalgia for me that they do for most. I must say that they come up a treat when combined with the new plastics.

Quite the collection.

this thread is amazing

as most of the actual marines are done and because i was itching to make something out of plasticard again, i decided to start work on a superheavy to use in apoc games.

And so after many weeks of progress (well many weeks of staring at it wondering how to do the next bit, followed by a few hours of frantic cutting and gluing), here's how it looks so far.

i have other wip shots but they're rather dull. This one i like for the black background. You can't tell from that pic but the inside is fully detailed :)

Yes I remember the little booklet that game with the 'Space Marine paint set'
;) , Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Space Wolves and Salamanders IIRC.

For the longest time I used terracotta for a basecoat for the Blood Angels, and could never figure out what I was doing wrong. It's nice to see the sergent markings and to see a Lt. in a SM army.

Awsome looking RT army, if you need anymore 'old skool' termies, I got a few kicking around.

Sighs, I remember when my 40k army was full of RTB01's like yours, also it had most of the metal models that i've seen in this blog. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. =o]

Michael =o]

PS damn they still look nice. What was the method you are using to clean them off?

Neat log, interesting seeing the mess you started with turn into the coolness after. Loving the old school models, I wish I didn't sell my old Predator Destructor. Looking forward to your Thunderhawk and glad to hear I'm not the only one who sits for weeks before launching into a cutting and gluing frenzy.

thanks for the comments :)

To clean the models what i do is stick them in an old ice-cream tub, spray them with fairy power spray until they're covered and then leave them for a couple of hours. Then wipe them down with a tissue and then use an old toothbrush and a sewing pin to remove the old paint. Oh and wear rubber gloves because otherwise after a while, your hands start to sting a bit from the fairy!

Fairy power spray works on plastics without melting the model and is available in supermarkets so is easy to get hold of. I used to use industrial cellulose thinner but that a) only works on metals and b) smells too strongly to do in the house without the wife complaining.

Yes it was salamanders, ultramarines, blood angels and space wolves in the painting guide. I use it to remind me of the old markings. I like a lot of the old-style insignia so i've used a cross between that, the markings for Mk6 in the space marine codex and the markings from the 2nd ed ultramarines codex to do the army. Modern crimson fists don't show company or squad insignia but i wanted to have it so i could keep each squad together, and also because i never bothered with any markings in the old days, other than a chapter badge if they were lucky!

Quick update:

Now has most of the side detail attached, apart from some chapter symbols and imperial eagles. The front hatch is attached, but i need to add some magnets to keep it closed, and one front wing attached but needs detailey bits.
So far i'm quite happy with the progress. Certainly feels like i'm getting somewhere now having spent weeks doing the interior and losing heart with the project.
