View Full Version : WoC - Archaons Vanguard - army painting blog

16-08-2009, 18:13

A while ago i posted a thread with my warshrine conversion in it, ive since been very busy painting and modelling my chaos army!

I have painted up 20 marauders, 24 warriors and a lord, only to scrap them in favour of an all cavalry army!

Now, in a fortnight i have a tournament that this army will be playing in, and if at all possible i aim to finish it in time to enter best painted! (big challenge)

It consists of

3x5 units of marauder horse (2 finished totally 1 only built)
2x5 units of knights (1 halfway finished 1 only built)
1 warshrine (almost finished)
1 sorceror (still converting)
archaon (built)
one exalted (built and undercoated)

This is my first attempt at a blog for a project and these pictures are a little further away than i thought they'd be so i apologise but i'll make sure the next ones are closer!

Army shot (i left the two unpainted units, archaon and exalted out of this!)

Close up (sort of) of Marauder Horse w/ flails...

Close up of my Tzeentch warshrine, this is mainly subtle and similar to the rest of my army, but the blue skin/fire and fur will make it stand out, i intend to do blue/white fur on archaon and on my mage (he will also have the blue skin/fire!) so this should run loosely through the army and help make it fit in more.

As you can see, i have not painted the banners yet, and i also will be placing the exalted gamesday model into the warshrine itself! I want to do the banners a dull/muddy white (any help on this appreciated) and i will be using the banners on the knights/the shrine to help tie them all together.

Lastly a couple of pics of my converted sorceror on steed, this is the first conversion ive ever really done and im quite pleased

Here is a shot of his mutation/tentacle coming from his armour and melding onto his staff.

And here is his fur cloak (still working on the bottom)
You cant tell but the front is also converted and he is holding a flaming skull, the flames of which will be blue to match the warshrine!!

Anyway, i will update this when i finish my knights and complete the warshrine! After that i will start on the 2nd unit of knights and try to get base colours on all 3 of my lords/heroes!

Comments of all kinds welcome!!

Nice Start there man:)

quick update, i have sprayed the 2nd unit of knights, done some base coating on the other 5 and glued some bits onto the final regiment of marauder horses' bases! I have also finished the cloak on the sorceror.

My goal for tonight is to do some base coating on the metals on the 5 freshly undercoated knights and their horses. This will mean only the characters and 5 marauder horse remain untouched!

Ah yes, I remember your warshrine! :) Your army is looking nice so far. The Sorcerer conversion looks good, don't suppose you can show as a few pics of him from the front, just that's what you're opponent will be staring at! :D His horse looks nicely posed on that base, good job! :)

Looks great :) I like your warshrine.

right guys, thanks for all the responses to date! big update with lots of pictures here, including one of my finished sorceror conversion from the front.

I have decided to take a photo of ALL of my chaos army (not just the 2000 points im using for the tournament) as i worked so hard to finish my warriors & marauder block and it seems that they will not get lots of use, so id at least like to show them off on here:)

well, here is my army;

and here is my marauder block, i was really pleased with how these guys came out and i dont understand why the models get such stick, i think they're lovely!

next up are my warriors, the red unit have great weapons and some minor conversion work (the command unit) and the creamy coloured unit hand weapons and shields on backs, this way i can use them with both/either/or

here are my two heroes, the converted sorceror, who im really quite pleased with, and the exalted who is not really converted, just rearing his horse, he is made entirely from the awesome knights kit and i field him with a halberd :)

Sorry for multiple posts, but had to in order to include photos :)

and side view

I am really unsure how to paint these guys, i want them to stand out, but not look out of place. I was thinking of making them God specific, probably Tzeentch as that is the mark the hero has, and the sorc is unmarked, but doin his face blue and his fur blue would tie him in with the warshrine. I would love you guys opinions on this though, as i have also considered khornate colour scheme or just undivided again.

And here are the knights i am working on;

These guys are furthest on, with the metals being nearly done, just need to wash and highlight the gold.

And these are the newer ones, just done the silver on them and need to do the gold, the riders are still just black...

Nice start on the army. :)

As to turning off the flash, it's usually easier to just assure that you have enough light so that the flash isn't turned on. Try to take photos outside on an overcast day, that's the best to get good natural light.

that all looks really nice....but i find it a bit sad that the flash of your cam is killing some of your work..at least i suppose the true colours come out better with just some well lighting on them...
but i have the idea like this you will have a good shot at that prize

I'm pleased to say i have finally got some decent quality pics !! :) :)

I hope these are useful as they definately show the models off much better. I have been working on my knights and though they dont look much different (except the pic quality!) the armour has come on, i have been working on 10, but these 5 are the furthest on.

I have also nearly finished my converted sorceror! His horse only has the metal about halfway done, but he himself is nearly finished, just needing some minor touch ups! I also took photos of the shrine and a unit of marauder horse just to show the qualiy i aim to get the army to!

Please let me know your comments, thanks!

Here is sorceror dude with his flaming tzeentch skull!

I will be doin the base with lots of snow and will hopefully have him finished by the end of the day.

Here are the knights, as you can see, they are about 1/2way now but i think the fact there is so much armour means they look almost done already, im really pleased with the tones and shades of the armour on these guys

Here are my marauder horse, really love these models

24-08-2009, 14:33
and lastly, my shrine and its keepers! Still need to do the baners and the cloaks on these guys! and the leather :)

Those horse marauders are great. I also like the bases. Keep up the good work.

Some excellent work here!

24-08-2009, 21:30
Thanks very much guys :)

I have finished the sorceror completely now and i am really pleased with how he looks! I will have a picture up tomorrow!

Will be focussing on the knights now, and perhaps the Exalted Hero too as he is just a posh knight!

25-08-2009, 02:58
Wow man, looking very sexy here. Good job. I like the warriors and knights a lot. I like everything, really.

25-08-2009, 17:57
Little update guys,

Here is my finished sorceror, Im really pleased with him and think hes come out really well! He looks cool enough to stand out without stealing Archaons limelight and as my first real conversion im pretty happy, only the 'cloak' am i a little disappointed with as i wish it was a little smoother, but it looks okay and kinda like its meant to be all ragged!

Last shot is the best angle in my opinion

Also i have done some work on the Warshrine and knights, the knights is not very exciting so i didnt bother photographing it, i have brought the silver armour up to the same level on all 10 though and will be aiming to do the same to the gold tomorrow.

The warshrine i have decided how i will be doing the cloaks/banners. The banners are finished, but i think i will give them a light wash/glaze to blend them better - but i think they look suitably dirty and wartorn in this style and i am really quite pleased with the result! Let me know what you all think :)

and a close up:

Thanks guys

Nice sorcerer!
Your photos are better now.

13-09-2009, 17:06
So its been a while since i got round to updating this, but here is proof ive not been slacking too much. I have finished the Lord of the End Times himself, Archaon!

13-09-2009, 17:07
I have also been doing some work on the knights, base coating all the cloth/leather and bone, and working on the daemonic shields/swords. As best demonstrated on the unit champion...

More updates on the knights soon :)

13-09-2009, 20:39
Really nice stuff here, how do you do your snow bases/

13-09-2009, 22:35
Cheers :)

The snow is really simple, i just paint the base, and then do a layer of skull white where i put the GW snow flock! I sometimes layer the flock over a few times if i want it to look thicker and piled up (like on archaon and the sorceror) !
