View Full Version : Need help to decide Space Marine chapter

Gascogne

I working on an Space Marine army but I have yet to decide which chapter it should belong to.

The army is very shooty and mechanized; razorbacks, storms and predators (9 vehicles in all and army is 1750 points)

So I was wondering if one could get some help on picking a chapter?
I'm not too familiar with all chapters, I know little of the basic chapters but that's about it.

I say DA because I am biased. I just love the history and the mysteriousness of them. I believe they are a shooty army as well and could fit you.

If you don't want DA for what ever reason, just make your own chapter. Read about all the chapters and put together what you think is cool about them all into an DIY chapter.

of course the Dark Angels have a rather weak codex, you could always use the standard marine codex though

Since we're being biased. Blood Angels :D They're not always super assaulty. :P Look at the different chapter color schemes and see if one catches your eye. Then read up a bit on that army and see if you wanna go with it. If not, you can always make your own chapter with unique color scheme and everything.

Since we're being biased.

Based on that, here's the list of legions I'd recommend.

1. Dark Angels
2. Imperial Fists
3. Raven Guard
4. Ultramarines
5. Blood Angels

The following groups have both excellent fluff, and interesting / fun color schemes while painting. You'll have a lot of fun.

Iron Hands could be another choice, they tend to have a lot of vehicles, as well as a lot of master-crafted shooty weapons.

Dark Angels is a no no for me, I don't like robes on space marines. ;)
Blood Angels could have worked for me, if it were not for they can't have the HQ's in Space Marine codex.

Ultramarines can work, just trying to avoid it at the moment.
Would be fun if one could find a chapter which one likes and not too many players use it.

About the Raven Guards, I think I like their follow chapter which is the Raptors. But what color scheme do they have, green or brown? (can't find any decent information about them.

Have thought about them.

Well that was an intresting paintscheme they have. :p

The chapters so far which is intresting for me are (in no particular order).

Raptors
Imperial Fists
Iron Hands
Ultramarines

There isn't any chapter which is much for urban combat with suiting colorscheme?

I like raven guard. Got a cool speical character with some decent fluff behind him and can give an army fleet, not to bad. I have been a fun of marking your own chapter. Get name your characters and write back ground for them.

ABOMINATION!

We have a name for people like you: The Fallen.

Personally, I think that the Dark Angels would be a great choice. Yes, the current emphasis is mainly on the Fallen and their "terrible past", but there is SO much more than that besides robes and revenge.

What makes you think robes are a must have? Yes, many special characters are depicted in robes as are Company Veterans, but it isn't a must. Personally, they look more striking in regular power armour.

But anyway.

Urban combat? Red Scorpions. Well, the Angstrom Incident camoflauge pattern looks great and is for fighting in harshly illuminated hive cities. Also, their standard colour scheme is close to the Iron Warriors and so you could add chevrons to chainsword casings etc.

What about 3rd Company Blood Angels, using the SM Codex and have SM Chapter Master as a "count as" Brother-Captain Tycho.

My army list has an HQ which doesn't fit the Blood Angels codex, if it did I would take the Baal and army Blood Angels. (Don't like Blood Angels otherwise but I like the Baal ;) )

But Red Scorpions sounds pretty good so far, nice color scheme. :)

Angstrom Incident camoflauge pattern? I haven't been able to find it.
And "chevrons to chainsword casings" how do you mean more exactly?

Angstrom Incident pattern:
http://media.photobucket.com/image/angstrom%20incident/aguave5150/180px-Red_Scorpions_Angstrom.jpg (courtesy of google)

In 40k terminology chevrons = hazard stripes
http://www.planetfortress.com/tf2models/previews/Battle%20Grounds%2040K/Chainsword_Large.jpg
(in the real world a chevron is V shape, which does cover some hazard stripes, but 90% of the time 40k players use the term they are referring to stripes that aren't chevrons)

I'm not aware of any chapters with a tendency for urban combat (marines are supposed to be able to deal with most terrain), but the Salamanders (and the Black Dragons and Storm Giants who share similar doctrines) and Fire Lords fondness for close engagements and flame weapons would give them an edge in such terrain - tho none have suitable schemes.

In regards to schemes I'll suggest the Revilers and the Warbringers. The former have codex grey armour and have been known to use camo on their vehicles (IAvol2 shows a Reviler drop pod with darker grey shapes on) whilst the latter have kommando khaki* armour with a mottled vehicle scheme.

* at least according to Insignium Astartes, if you google them you'll get pictures of green marines because when the GW webmonkeys photoshopped marines for their chapter gallery they got the Warbringers mixed up with the Warbearers.

Oh dear, Angstrom Incident pattern was an ugly paint scheme...
So I think I stick to Red Scorpions Black/Yellow scheme if I choose them. :)

Urath
19-08-2009, 17:16
Ugly? Bah, you haven't seen well painted models in that scheme. Note, that image was from the original Rogue Trader - so it is ancient, but it's the only official image of the camoflauge scheme.

Oh aye, I was actually talking about chevrons. But, hazard stripes is still good enough.

There, I much prefer that to the standard scheme, but that's just me. I couldn't find any with actual chevrons, just the hazard stripes.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the Raptors.

Check this out:

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Raptors_(Chapter)

Something about Drab Green on marines makes them feel a little American circa 1944. Less heraldic, more down to business.

Also, they'll be super quick to paint.

Finally, a blocky camo pattern on the vehicles in green and grey would like smashing.

If you want something else, I'd take a look at the Bell of Lost Souls' Badab War campaign book here: http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2009/08/play-aid-badab-war.html

It's filled with cool Marine schemes and ideas.

Cheers,

ABOMINATION!

We have a name for people like you: The Fallen.

Dark Angels players - they're totally reasonable people.

Seriously, if you wanted to use the Space Marine codex and models but paint DA colors, I doubt anyone would be bothered other than a few loudmouthed lunatic DA players. As long as you don't actually know any of them outside of the internet, you'll be fine.

Red Scorpions could be good, and they have forgeworld love, if you have a desire to sacrifice a gargantuan pile of cash in return for extra gubbins.

I don't have my marine codex with me, but I remember fluffwise there was one chapter that was known for their love of tanks, so you could consider them.

As an added bonus, you can get molded shoulderpads from GW for them so you don't have to freehand the chapter symbol.

If you're factoring rules into your decision, Salamanders and White Scars have some of my favorite chapter tactics.

Salamanders get master crafted added to their thunderhammers and twin-linked added to their flamers and meltaguns.

White scars can outflank dedicated transports.

I do hope you understand what dry humour is?

Anyway, like Sydbridges said: the Red Scorpions have lots of tasty bits and bobs from Forge World and there are plenty of painting logs in the Science Fiction area to help give you some ideas.

Imperial Fists would indeed be good, also. I prefer the golden yellow, to outright "bad moon yellow".

I'd recomend making your own up, or choosing a lesser known one. Its more interesting to play against, and you'll have a unique army that suits your tastes. Better than the Template/Preset colour-schemes IMO.

If you weren't serious, I apologize, but when the new Space Marine codex first came out, there were plenty of posts from Dark Angels players saying the same thing to other DA players who didn't use death/ravenwing who wanted to use the new codex who were serious. When on the internet, I assume insanity before I assume humor.

dont then, let your games be what evolves your background, just choose a scheme that you like and want to paint and go from there.

the problem you get wen you ask a question such as the one you have chosen to ask, is that people will always be biased and say there own chapter.

personally i say Black Templars - failing that IF/CF, but again thats with a big bias on my own thoughts towards marines.

can you answer these:
what style of play are you looking for, mixed bag? mech? close combat? this will really mean you go with certain chapters.

eg: you want a CC force, go with BT/SW/BA, do you want a Mech chapter? then choose IH and use the SM dex, do you want a all terminator Force, then go DW, can you see hwat i mean?

start by deciding what style you feel best suits you ( mines always been CC ) and go from there.

I did a while back as a suggestion for a chapter that would be mechanised/armoured, and damn near got my head bitten off.

Personally, I think that if they need to do it, Marines can - if mechanised Imperial Fists, or White Scars or Blood Angels on the defensive is what they need, then they'll do it.
Materiel rich, manpower poor. If a marine company approaches orbit in their Strike Cruiser, assesses the situation and the commander decides they need to drop as a mechanised spearhead, they'll fuel up the T'Hawk transporters rather than the gunships and lock the armoured vehicles in the cradles, but if he thinks they need to storm a particular site, and it'll be Drop Pods riding the wake of or-tillery shots, and T'Hawk gunships flying CAS missions.

Just because a chapter prefers to fight in one way, doesn't mean that they can only fight in that way. ;)

But personally, I'd say pick a colour scheme you like - be it an existing one or one of your own devising, work out a little bit of backstory to say why they prefer to fight in that particular manner, and go from there.

I don't mind if some people are biased on chapters, there are many chapters and that is why I started this thread (since I only knew little about the basic chapters).

The play style I want with my marines is to be very shooty.
(love tanks -> Predators and Razorbacks)
So I created an army list on 1750 points which has 4 Razorbacks, 3 Predators and 2 Storms. (hopefully it will work well hehe)

Hmm if you don't like to write but you want a fluffy army go for one that isn't well established i.e not first founding. Or a chapter mentioned in codex ultramarines!

For example http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Sons_of_Antaeus

and by the sounds of it they some what match your preffered colour scheme.

Black is great, dark grey as well.
The Red Scorpions colors are very nice (Imperial Armour volume 6), not 100% sure which GW paints it is for all the different parts.

Green can I be without on my marines, already have an army which is screaming after green paint...

chalk up another vote for create your own. its great to have a different looking army, you can choose a colour scheme you like and you can use any characters you wish for counts as with less whinging (opponent: "you only won because you got vulcan in an ultramarines army").

plus you get to add a bit of comedy if you wish. im making my next marine biker force as "Dark Emos" they all wear skirts, lots of black and make up. battle cry is a soft sob. chapter motto is "my emperor doesnt understand me"...
