Well hello there, boys and girls! That's right: SOTR is officially fast becoming one of my favorite games, and the pulp setting is just gravy! I've now decided that if I'm going to spend hundreds of dollars of my hard-earned cash on toy soldiers, for the time being, they're gonna be evil Nazi super-science toy soldiers! That said, I'm starting a Drop Trooper Platoon of Fallschirmjager with para Drop Armour and support elements in the form of Luftwaffe Pathfinders and Me 362 Mecha! YEA!

The first support element awaiting 'glass' for the cockpit, and a fresh coat of paint:

Next will be around TWENTY Drop Troopers with armour, another 15+sniper team of Luftwaffe Pathfinders, and then some support in the form of a Panzer or Tiger... and then more Mecha!!!!

Any colour suggestions???

Good start! I do a drop army myself. Getting mine ready for the 2nd official tournie this october. Are you on the SOTR forums, not too many drop players around.

Also just a quick note, you cant take a panzer for support, can only take drop vehicles.
Nothing to stop you in a friendly game but in official games its against the rules.

Just posted these over on the SOTR forum: a pic of my Me 362 WIP. Still have a LOT to do on it, but I think it's coming out o.k. (never did camo before:rolleyes:)

If you haven't done camo before then I must say it doesn't show, looking good so far. Maybe broaden those brown streaks a little bit tho, are you adding green ones like the SOTR examples?

Didn't know there was an SOTR forum, think I'll look it up!

Looking forward to more.

Forum: http://secretsofthethirdreich.com/forums/index.php

I'm basically working on a version of the Drop Armour suits camo from the website/forum/book. I like it, and wanted all the armour in my Drop Platoon to look cohesive, so yes, it will have green stripes and light dots when done. Right now it's just a matter of me blending those brown stripes, adding the green+dots, acquiring number/cross transfers, washing it with a watered down shade, taking the good ol' sponge technique to it (so it looks pretty bunged up!), weathering powers... phew!:cries: Hope it looks decent when done... oh yeah, plus the 'glass!' I'm doing the Para Drop Platoon the same way, so it'll be a while before I get done with 'em... I'll probably invest in an airgun before too long to do the camo well.

Cool looking job so far, Ironmonger! I just ran across SOTR the other day and was thinking of picking up a few minis, if only to paint. Some cool looking stuff.

If you are interested, it looks like the paint job on that mecha is based on the actual historical WWII german pattern knows as "ambush camouflage" from late in the war. It was called that because it was supposed to blend in with the dappled sunlight on a tank sitting under a tree waiting in "ambush". If you would like some more inspiration just google "ambush camo" or "ambush pattern" and that and it will turn up hundreds of images of models and real life tanks.

http://www.missionmodels.com/files/t_17858.jpg

There were litterally countless German camo variation using those three colors. Stripes, blotches, hard-edged, soft-edged, etc. The actual "ambush camo" (three colors + dots) was factory applied, but during most of the second half of the war the tanks and vehicles came from the factory with just that yellow-tan base coat and along with a can of green and red-brown paint, which was then suppsed to be applied in the field to match local conditions.

I'm sorry, I meant that I was going to add those models to the plog, not the army. I'm doing a pretty straight Mech Grenadier army as well as the Para Drop guys, and it'll have plenty of tanks and 251's in it (and a few Volkskrad...;).

@mdauben: thanks for the info. Didn't know about that last bit with the environment-specific paint jobs.

great scheme, though it isn't part of the fallshirmjager what do you think of the new mecha they released?

I've got a Tiger Mecha on it's way... well, if FRP ever sends it along that is:eyebrows:

My Tiger Mecha is in the process of being painted for a contest on the SOTR forum right now. I'll post some pics of it when it's done. FRP came through and sent along my minis...and there are a TON of them, too! It's gonna take me forever and a day to assemble and paint them all, put I must say, I'm far more interested in painting these chappies then any of my WH40k figs right now:eyebrows: So they may end up being painted sooner then expected.

Some of my Mechgrenadiers:

And for fun...a picture of my baby:D

The Tiger Mecha is gonna be a bit simiar in color scheme to my Waffe... erm... I mean, Mechgrenadiers.

great brush work I am still undecided on how to paint my force. Since i split up my AE WWII army and SOTR at the same time so i have to think of a unifying scheme. not sure if i want to do camo or not.

Ironmonger

Yeah, I was face with the same problem, but I just think camo feels alot better for any WWWII army.

I've been working diligently on my Germans, so an update is forth coming shortly. I just got a squad of 5 Para Drop Armour Troopers (including a Flamethrower and a MG46):D I'll be using them both as regular support and as the foundation of my Para Drop Trooper Platoon.

Well, I decided not to try mucking about too much with my FIRST Tiger Mecha, so here's a few WIP of her without much converting:

http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp250/Ironmonger_album/Secrets%20of%20the%20Third%20Reich/DSC_0036-1.jpg

and here's one with a BMW w/sidecar I'm converting (notice the gas masks):
http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp250/Ironmonger_album/Secrets%20of%20the%20Third%20Reich/DSC_0038-1.jpg

The Tiger commander also has a head swap with the peaked-cap gas-mask from the officer's heads. I thought it'd look more appropriate (he is, after all, in the open air... gotta watch out for that V-Gas :P)

I'm working on my Paint Grind 2010 entries right now... a squad of Para Drop Armour complete with flamethrower and MG!

good work when i saw the preview for the tiger i was very excited good to see it turned out quite well. I am thinking of entering the Grind for Feb, just have to see when I might be able to redirect some cash flow from my other projects. I want to use the SOTR heads on some black tree design minis for my Germans.

So... here's my minis out of deep-freeze! A near-completed WIP of the Tiger:

http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp250/Ironmonger_album/DSC_0003-18.jpg

http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp250/Ironmonger_album/DSC_0005-15.jpg

I'll clean up the commander/LMG, finish the base, and give her a few swipes with the matte. With that completed, I'll finish my Para Drop Troopers... just in time for my Wolverines to arrive.

I'm surprised that there aren't more Warseers playing this great game:confused:

Very nice paint job on the tiger.

I have looked into SOTR.

I play Flames of War in 15mm scale and cannot justify collecting WW2 in 28mm even for something as cool as SOTR (Not yet maybe soon :D )

With everything released as of late, and more on the way... and INCURSION... I think maybe you could...:p

I like the way you've done this - for me the mecha models seem a bit too silly but by going for a historicalish camo scheme you make the thing look more plausible somehow - nice painting, the blackened gun muzzles look great.

Your Jet Mecha looks awesome! I actually just started picking up some SotR models just because I thought they looked cool, and I just got the Jet Mecha in the mail. It seems to be a resin kit, I think? I've never worked with resin before, so I'm kind of apprehensive that I'm going to mess it up or something.

Any tips you can share on prepping/assembling the model? Like I said, I'm a total rookie when it comes to resin.

Thanks!

Well... if you haven't tucked into the beauty of the Jet Mecha yet, I can give you a few tips/guidelines:

1) WASH YOUR RESIN!!! The majority of the SOTR and INCURSION stuff is pretty clean from release agent as is, but this stage never hurts, and will ensure that all paints and glues stick! Alot of people do this after sanding, but I do it before.

2) sanding/cleaning up flash. There should only be a little bit of flash/excess resin to clean up, but this should be done whilst wearing a dust filter/face mask. Resin can give you the cancer along with a lot of other problems for dem lungs, so be sure that before you start sanding you cover up!

3) Glue, glue, GLUE!!! Make sure that the glue you're working with is the good stuff! Those of you who are savvy to B.O.W. will know about Filla-Glu, Kicka-Pen and the like, but whatever you use, make sure it's good! There's nothing worse then going through all the preparations for your awesome new resin mini, gluing it just perfect, and then watching as it breaks here and there for seemingly no reason! I know it can be annoying to do all the prep and get the good glues, but it really pays off in the end!

4) When you do cut/sand/man-handle your chunks o' resin, take care: resin can be brittle some times! You shouldn't have this problem with Westwind stuff, as their resin is usually in one large chunk, and of the HIGHEST quality possible, but just... be aware.

That's all for now. I'll post some finished pics of my Tiger in a while, and then some WIP of both my Drop Troopers and my 3 shiny, new Wolverines!

Mate, have to say that your Tiger really is an impressive piece of work! I lifted the camo scheme and used a variation for some robots on my own thread- thanks very much for that ;)

All your stuff is looking really good, I'm loving all the mecha that you've been working on. Great stuff :)
