I consider myself an expert with IG as that is my army, but I am barely an expert.

I will never ever become an expert with every codex, so why do people consider themselves experts with every aspect of the game?

I'm an expert at expertise. I consider myself a master-level tactician, up there with Sun Tzu and Keanu Reeves.

Why should 40K, or wargaming generally, be different to so many other aspects of life?

Makes me think of "Veterans Night" at GW stores. What's a Veteran? At what point do you stop being a Noob? Is it based upon how many games you played? Is there a specific level of 40K knowledge needed to advance to veteran status? Is that knowledge based upon the game, the background, general tabletop experience, painting and modeling ability. Are some people simply born to be veterans, possessing inate qualities that others can only dream of possessing, despite constant efforts to discover an elusive missing piece of the the jigsaw that is their soul? Where did this quality come? Is it passed down through social interaction? Genetic memory? Divine prophecy? If it can be ignited then can our divinity burn bright, raising us beyond the sum of our part where we are no longer men... but GODS!!!

And how can the staff at at GW tell?

That made me laugh quite a lot djinn8 :p

Well, to me, a "Veteran" is usually someone who's seen at least one edition pass from start to finish, their knowledge of the game mechanics and fluff should be pretty decent too. But it's a funny term all the same.

I am an expert at blinking and breathing. I can do both without thinking and even at the same time. I am so good at breathing that I have never suffocated to death. I am so good at blinking that whenever I'm in a staring contest, the only way I lose is by... you guessed it... blinking. I'm just SO good at blinking.
