Rightyho, let's get the ball rolling. I'm Poly and this is my dog:
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/5885/jsenelson001.jpg
Onto other matters: I'm the laziest painter on the planet, and am currently trying to build a 1000pt Tau force, which I'll hopefully scale up a bit at some later point. I'm also having considerable fun digging through my bitzbox to find unpainted marines from a project I never did anything with a long time ago and painting them up as Imperial Fists. Since there's a lot less marines, I may as well start with those.

First we have Brother Augustus, fresh from fighting Orks.

I rather like the 'dirty' look for marines: they're meant to be tough as nails and a bit of dirt and armour damage helps emphasise that. And here's a sneak peek at the next 'fist to be done, Brother Pollux.

Right, and here are the Tau. But first, some fluff.

"When I saw Puretide, he said this;

The follower of the Tau'va knows that there are four aspects to learn: Fire, Wind, Water and Earth. Fire is fierce and powerful. O'Shovah followed the path of fire, but failed to learn that fire can not easily be controlled. In the end, he was consumed in flame. Wind is invisible and untouchable. O'Shaserra follows the path of the wind, but she has not learnt that finesse bereft of strength means nothing. That leaves water and earth. Water yields to the attack, and then strikes back at the stumbling foe. But some foes are too sure to stumble, and yielding only works for so long before there is nothing left to yield. Earth is strong and unyielding. To hold ground is not the way of the Tau for we have not the strength, but there are times when resistance must be applied. Few understand this, and we all suffer as a result.

To truly understand the Tau'Va, one must realise that there is a fifth element found in harmony. To truly know the Greater Good, one must be equal parts fire, wind, water and earth and allow each to cover the failings of the others.

I told this to my friend O'Suam'Vesa, long ago. If only he had listened."
-Ethereal Aun'El Olku

The tale of the 1st Vior'la Fireworld taskforce is not a happy one, but as all things it must be told. The force was put together to deal with the Gue'la production facilities on Hypherion XI. The planet is a geological oddity: its lava flows run thicker and closer to the surface than most, resulting in a higher than usual number of volcanos and a significant amount of surface lava. The cities were protected by stout adamantium walls and energy fields but the citizens still lived precarious lives: the cities and factories were placed so as best to harvest minerals from the lava and constant vigilance from the Adeptus Mechanicus was required to keep the people safe.

The world was also important for its proximity to the Tau Empire, and its production of (appropriately) hellhound tanks for the Imperial Guard. Many an assault on third-sphere tau colonies has been launched from Hypherion XI, and it became apparent that the planet needed to be secured for the good of the third-sphere expansion.

Given the nature of the planet, the Tau were reluctant to take the fight outside the cities, but heavy orbital defences in these centres made the prospect a certainty. Earth-caste engineers worked for many cycles to produce fire-caste armour that was resistant to the heat. Battlesuits, fire warriors and tanks were upgraded to not only resist the intense temperatures, but to run off them, using the ambient heat to power their own systems. With the Tau active on the planet's surface and little resistance from the local PDF, it seemed the campaign would run quickly and painlessly. Then the Imperial Guard arrived.

The Tallarn 482nd came to the PDF's rescue with only days to spare. They were backed up by a number of smaller regiments trained in seige warfare and city-fighting. The Imperial Guard bolstered the cities' flagging defences and dug in for the long haul. The Tau knew they were not prepared for such a conflict, and prepared to fall back. Imperial records on the matter mostly detail what followed, but behind Tau lines and unknown conflict raged.

A number of Tau were clustered around a small hololithic table. At the head stood the Ethereal Aun'El Olku and Shas'O'Suam'Vesa, he of Cleansing Fire. Around it was a team of Earth-caste engineers, all apparently in agreement. One inclined his head and spoke. "It is true. If we could access the gue'la power source, we could shut off the safety mechanisms in place and destroy the factories with ease. It is unavoidable however, that many Gue'la civilians will be killed," he said. Suam'Vesa nodded. "Do it then," he said. "Their sacrifice will be for the Greater Good."

The Ethereal placed a hand on the commander's shoulder. The engineers drew back, this gesture of familiarity from an Ethereal completely unpresedented. "Every life that can be preserved is worth preserving, O'Vesa. It is not the will of the Ethereals that this many should die," he said. His words were softly spoken but powerful. The Engineers hung their heads further. "We will prepare an alter-" one started, before the commander interrupted. "I gave you an order!" he shouted. "This planet poses a threat to the Greater Good and we will remove it, Gue'la be damned!"

Aun'El Olku spoke softly again, but it was clear he was losing patience. "You dare defy the edict of the Ethereals? I consider you a friend, O'Vesa, but this I will not tolerate. You will submit or be recalled to Vior'la for evaluation," he said. The threat carried a sting: those recalled from active service were rarely allowed to return. O'Suam'Vesa bridled and placed a hand on the holster of his plasma pistol. As he did so, his body was filled with revulsion. The thought of allowing an Ethereal to come to harm, much less harming one himself, made him feel physically sick, yet somehow he felt it needed to be done. He drew the pistol slowly and let it slack at his side. The gesture was succinct, yet fully understood. The Ethereal bowed low and then stared deep into the commander's eyes. "Victorious or not, you know well that this is folly," he said, and stormed out. The commander turned back to the assembled engineers. "Well? What are you waiting for?!"

The sophisticated Tau technology quickly overcame the defense systems and flooded the factories and streets with lava. An untold number perished in the ensuing holocaust, and the guard fell back to their ships in panic. Those that remained were killed by the steadily advancing lava or the swiftly advancing Tau. However many guardsmen still hung in orbit. It had been hoped that the air caste would drive them off, but no assistance came. Whether as temporary punishment or something more serious, it became apparent that the Tau empire has abadoned O'Suam'Vesa. The Guard began full-scale orbital bombardment and forced the Tau to retreat. But it was no matter; the planet was ruined. After the Vior'la expedition had done their work it was left almost completely devoid of life in and in no condition to be repopulated. The the third-sphere expansion was secured just a little further.

After the task force returned to Vior'la, a council of Ethereals met to decide the fate of the Shas'O. After much deliberation is was decided that he would be allowed to remain in active duty, but only if the Ethereals were allowed advance warning and deliberation regarding any important tactical decisions. The commander protested: surely such a measure would cripple the efficiency of his force! The Ethereals merely smiled as O'Suam'Vesa raged and fumed. He knew well his return to active service was a token only. Aun'El Olku was returned to his side, and any further dissension would be punished far more severely. As time wears on O'Suam watches more and more of his soldiers die due to the Ethereal's inaction and becomes more and more embittered by it. Where the future takes Shas'O'Suam'Vesa none can speculate, but what is known is that it will not end well...

+++

And here's some pics! Most of these Tau are in serious need of a highlight, but I'm unsure of how to do it without making them pink. :(

And here's how to do the lava bases.

Colours needed:
-Red Gore
-Golden Yellow
-Skull White

1. Paint your desired lava shape in Red Gore. I usually do a small body of lava with little veins going outward. The veins remain red gore, while the body of the lava gets the following treatment:
2. Mix about 70/30 Red Gore/Golden Yellow and paint over the red gore, leaving about 2-3mm of red gore still visible.
3. 50/50 Red Gore/Golden Yellow now. Leave the same gap again, but this time use a little less paint on your brush.
4. Again, leave 2-3mm of the previous colour. This time, drybrush golden yellow.
5. 2-3mm yadda yadda. 50/50 Golden Yellow/Skull White, lightly drybrushed.
6. Surprise! No 2-3mm gap, but this time very lightly drybrush over the previous layer with skull white.

Alright. Was trying to highlight the yellow a bit better and realised that the exact same colour scheme without the red actually looks pretty cool. What do you guys think; would it be worth my time repainting what I've got? It's not really very well painted: I'm just getting back into the hobby and am still a little rusty. As you can probably see, the 'wasp' fire warrior looks quite a bit better than some of the other stuff posted in this thread. He's still quite messy (particular the hands, feet and gun), but I really like the way he's looking.

Thanks eltanko. :) In the end I decided to stick with the current scheme: the wasp fire warriors look amazing, but I found it looks a bit silly on suits and vehicles.

More pics! Now I'll just step out here and say I haven't actually painted a TT vehicle in about two years, but I'm still pretty happy about how this guy came out.

Thanks. Always good to know people are reading. :D Do you like the devilfish style bases (with black rocks) or the plain grey ones better? Being as these are a railgun and plasma rifles, some of the most powerful guns in the known universe, you've gotta ask yourself one question; Do ya feel lucky Tau'cka? Well, do ya?"

I've added some battle damage to the broadside and devilfish, as well as doing up both of their bases properly. I'm promised myself no pics until they're both completely finished though. :p d'fish is just some minor touching up, and the broadside needs only minor touching up too. Its shield drones however, need to be completely rebased and rehighlighted. I'll try my very best to have it all done within the next 24 hours.

Alright! I stumbled across an online auction in its closing minutes today and managed to snatch it up. For about $100NZ (approx 30GBP) I got...

-Aun'shi
-8 Fire Warriors
-15 Kroot
-2 Gun Drones
-3 Pathfinders
-4 XV15 Stealth Suits
-1 Devilfish
-1 Hammerhead

So I'm pretty pleased with myself. More online purchases. Not quite such amazing deals, but still a mighty good saving. ;-)

-16 Kroot
-1 Hammerhead
-7 Pathfinders w. Shas'ui

With more vehicles at my disposal now, I might be tempted to run a more mechanised approach (two hammerheads, two mounted FW squads+suits). Anyway, it took longer than promised, but here's the finished Broadside. You'll note some minor battle damage and quite a bit of dirt/soot on the legs.

http://i38.tinypic.com/1z3yp81.jpg

http://i33.tinypic.com/1hquj4.jpg

Purchase-wise, I'm thinking one more broadside should finish my army up for the time being. Future (as in next year) I'll first be looking to get more battlesuits (3 Helios pattern with plasma and fusion, 3 with TL flamer and a missile pod) and fill out the stealth team to 6. After that I'm not sure. The army'll probably be done by then: I might buy some piranhas, sniper teams and kroot hounds to finish it all off. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I'm working on some OS lighting right now, so they'll probably look even better when I'm done. In other news, the larger online package arrived today. There's good news and bad news. Bad news first: I'm guessing this was put together by a kid, because everything's equipped wrong and it's been goddam slathered in superglue. Good news is, there were some spare bitz that I weren't expecting, and the gluejob isn't so terrible as to be unfixable.

The hammerhead was more like a d-fish though: with the fcentral burst cannon and gun drones. So I decided to spice it up a bit and dug through the bitz to come up with this. Say hello to the Devilfish-X42, crude bluetack mockup edition!

http://i34.tinypic.com/2n1x4b4.jpg

I need to spice up the central hatch somehow without festooning it with guns. I was thinking having some comms-apartus type stuff. Fluffwise, it's a command/comms devilfish, game-wise it's a hammerhead. I hope to have it looking a bit nicer fairly soon. :-)

...several hours later

Well that was horrific. :cries:

Remember when I said the largest online package had arrived? Well today I opened it up and decided to start sorting out my army. Some of it was weird. In particular, whoever originally owned this stuff seemed to have a problem with the concepts of 'up' and 'down', since almost every model in had at least part of it (super) glued on upside-down. Most notable, the engines on the vehicles were all the wrong way up.
http://i37.tinypic.com/21b4vuc.jpg

Other weirdness includes a kroot with a pair of splinter cannons for arms. Not dual-wielding splinter cannons; they were physically his arms, sticking out like the world's most successful scarecrow. They're on goblin green bases too; that gave me a laugh. I haven't seen Goblin Green bases since the 3rd edition.
http://i35.tinypic.com/30urfpt.jpg

No big deal, so I start taking this stuff apart and realised how very, very...glued it all is. I ruined two exact-o-blades trying to pull the drones out of the vehicle cup holders alone and another one while dealing with the kroot. At this point, I stabbed myself in the thumb. It hurt like hell and bled everywhere. Luckily, the university provided us with a box of condoms and bandaids at the start of the year. Both remained resolutely unused until today, when I put about three bandaids around my finger to stop the bastard from bleeding. It stopped after about 20 minutes (I think, I sorta just stared at my thumb for a while until I manned up and pulled them off) and I cleaned it up a bit and put a smaller bandage on.
http://i38.tinypic.com/a5ho2d.jpg
The cut isn't very big (about 4mm in length) but must've been quite bloody deep. I'm still manly.

Drama over, I decided to take all the vehicles to bits and see just what I have.

Not a lot as it turns out, and the main problem is the drones. See, I use smart missiles on all my devilfish because if they use gundrones, they give up 2 killpoints when destroyed instead of 1. Hammerheads don't need missiles, because their burst cannons aren't detachable. So I have a problem then, since the hammerhead came with gun drones, and the devilfish with smart missiles. I can swap them around to be legal, but as I mentioned it's not really a clever idea gameplay wise. So I jury-rigged some XV8 burst cannons and some unused gundrones and voila! Instant burst cannons.

I'm not 100% satisfied with that, but I'll see if I can grab some spare bitz from any local Tau players and fix it up later.

And finally, stealth suits. I thought I'd try out two weird painting techniques here; the 'stealth transition' and OS lighting from the lava. WiPs in 3...2...1

aaaand here's the whole army as of now. There's another box of kroot and another hammerhead coming in a week or two, and then I'm pretty much done for models. :D

Right. Sorry about not posting for a while; I just got through exams. Truth me told, I haven't got a whole lot of painting done. For a brief change of pace, here's some WiP eldar that I picked up cheap online. I've been painting them ulthwe colours, because it's fairly simple and looks good. I've also been trying out some new camera stuff: all fairly simple, but hopefully it helps represent the models better. But first, here's two new XV8 bodyguards.

And remember, I know I'm not the best painter on the planet, so any tips to help me improve would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any stockists near you that sell vajello model color? I see your whites a little lumpy/dirty and its a problem I had for years unless I thinned my paint to extremes and took all day to do it.

However vajello do a white paint called foundation white. Its not a foundation paint, but its not far off it - two or three thin coats and its as smooth as a babys bum :D

Aside from that I dont see anything here that practice and perseverance won't cure. Your lava bases look great, and you clearly understand shading, its just improving. Keep at it and you'll soon see the difference :D

Hey, all of your stuff looks great, but i also noticed that with the white on your eldar, and on the yellows on your tau, as well as some of your other things look a little lumpy. To solve this, just keep a little bit of water on a palette off to the side. When you want to paint something, take some paint out of your cans, add a tiny tiny tiny bit of water to it and voila, you should be much happier with the results, as well as making your pictures seem clearer. Let me know how it works out!
