So I've decided to start an official log covering 2 projects.

The first are my Astral Claws (I'm participating in the Tale of 40k Painters).

The Second will be my slow progree on my Space Hulk copy - after mulling it over the past few weeks I've decided my Termies from Space Hulk will be Astral Claws...will make the whole set compatable for both 40k and Space Hulk.

So without further ado (Copied from the Tale thread)

...Ssorck's Old School Astral Claws, 1750 points

SIDENOTE:
Doing Astral Claws using regular Space Marine Rules

AUGUST PAINTING:
1 Test Space Marine with Flamer - Cost: 15 points
1 Dread with MM, Hvy Flamer - Cost: 115 points

TOTAL PAINTING FOR August: 130 Points

BACKGROUND/THEME:
Had this idea quite awhile ago. I always loved the fluff surrouning Huron Blackheart and the Badab War - but was less than impressed with the current treatment of the Red Corsairs. I always felt the Red Corsairs should reflect a more or less SM force rather than a CSM force, specifically one revolving around lightning strikes with assault boats or drop pods.

My army is an Astral Claws force right after Huron recovers from his melta-blast and bionic replacements, before his red thing. So Astral Claws with the original tiger stripes. I also envision he would have had some of the other renegades with him when he fled to the Malestrom, so I will have some Executioner Space Marines attached as well. I picture my army as the force that drops in on the first pirate outpost Huron subdues in the Malestrom.

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Black Rock Dread - Heavy Flamer added, smokestacks lengthened, Army badge removed, new sarcaphagus cover added, chaos smoke launchers

PAINTING:
Black with Tiger Stripes

Metals are a dumbed down version of the metal master Jakob Nielson technique.

Silver or Steel is a basecoat of Boltgun Metal, followed by a wash of thinned Chaos Black. Highlight layers Boltgun Metal, Chainmail. Next hit with a very thin glaze of Purple and Green ink mixed. Final Highlight Mithril Silver.

The metals take a bit of time but I'm a big fan of the result. Again, all the credit goes to Jakob Nielson for the technique.

BASING:
Will eventually be based to look like a starship interior.

STILL TO DO:
Just add a name for the dread nameplates, and add script to the dread purity seals.

HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Finding a stripe that worked - messed around with a few different techniques.
Lows: The striping takes a long time - still alot of models to do...

Lufgt Huron, the Tyrant of Badab.

This miniature is supposed to represent Huron pretty much immediately after he recovers from his melta blast, and right before Huron and his renegades drop on the 1st pirate outpost they take in the Eye of Terror. (and a sidenote I'm not a big fan of the official mini...)

So here he is built, I'll be painting him over the next week or so:

Figured I'ld post a few shots of my test genestealer...I'm happy with him - 21 to go!

Did this guy to test the colors but also to test the way I'll be rebasing them...I think the bases work, though most of them will need some additional tech junk on them...

Ther termies I'll base in the same way - I'm thinking having them removable from a 40mm base with magnets for SH games.

Note I'll be rebasing all of my SH minis to be 40k compatable as well...

The 'stealer looks good, nice scheme, the blue looks very good.

The Astral Claws to me look fantastic, my god they would stand out in a real battle! the dread looks great, love the colours, solid highlighting! very very nice. look forward to seeing more :)

Very nice painting!

I like your Huron build; are you going to sculpt any more detail onto e.g. shoulder pads or chest plate, or will further additions be painted?

Huron looks cool! I would do them as loyalists though, or at least from during the Badab War, keep the Chaos stuff out of it. :)

I'm thinking at this point I'm going ot paint as is - the scheme is busy enough that I don't think I need to add much more. If he needs more I'll add it later.

I'm pretty much doing them as loyalists - using the regular SM codex, the Badab paint scheme, etc. I agree on keeping the Chaos stuff out - GW should have kept them as striaght up renegades with no chaos hardware.

My huron will 'count as' Vulkan incidentally...

Huron would be the only oddity if you stick to the loyalist theme since he doesnt have the extensive bionics yet.

Well, the army is meant to represent the rebels in one particular slice of time. According to the fluff at the end of the rebellion Huron takes his melta hit, and the dribs and drabs remaining of the rebels flee into the eye of terror. After he gets his bionic enhancements the rebel forces drop on a pirate outpost, completely annihlating them.

I figure at this point Huron wouldn't have switched to his red phase - he'ld still be wearing his tiger stripes, as would the rest of the Claws. I figure they wouldn't adopt the red and black scheme for quite some time...so for this brief slice of time I envision Huron having both the enhancements and the stripes.

Make sense?

These guys are all looking really good, but I must say that your metals are especially nicely done!

What else are you planning on including in this force?

Makes total sense, only thing is that Huron fled to the Maelstrom. ;)

As for Huron:

Haa Haa, that pic is funny - I've heard Anton LaVey as well.

And I stand corrected on my fluff - he fled into the Malestrom.

The army as it stands right now I'm thinking:

Huron
3 Astral Claws tac squads with drop pods
3 Astral Claws dreads with drop pods (I seem to remember Huron had a fondness for dreads? Maybe from Into the Malestrom?)
1 Executioners Assault Squad
3 Executioners Land Speeders
1 Librarian (probably Executioners as well)

Eventually I may expand by adding an Astral Claws Sternguard, Astral Claws termies possibly a Mantis Warriors or Lamenters Devastator squad and a few rhinos to interchange with the pods...

I was trying to figure out how to make the different chapter paintjobs look like they are from the same army. My thoughts right now are to paint each unit in their original colors. I was thinking the way to unite the different schemes is by painting over the right shoulderguards with red paint and then using the current Astral Claws hand symbol. Thoughts?

Are you going to be converting the SH terminators to Astral Claws ones? Because that would be truly incredible. I love the striping, the scheme looks great

Thats my plan - they are already converted just need paint. Pretty minor conversion work, just removing the BA markings and replacing them with more generic skulls, etc. Only major overhaul was the assault cannon guy - he got a new torso as I'm not a big fan of the decorative dinner plates.

Fantastic, can't wait to see em. I've also been converting the SH termies - I will be starting up a log any day now to track the progress. Excited to see what others have done with them

Update to the Claws...

Finished my first 5 tac marines (well, the flamer guy was already done). I love the fact my first tac squad is composed of BFM and ABR marines - they look pretty good with full bling!

At this point I love the way the stripes look, and think this willl look quite good as a group. I decided to do all terminator crux's (the seargent has one on his powerfist) in my silver metallic rather than stone - I felt adding grey to the palette wouldn't work. There is enough bling in the stripes anyway. I'm also not doing any gold paint at all, trying to limit colors...

On to the pics:

I like your take on the Astral Claws' scheme- it's always struck me as kind of garish, but your predominately-black look is very appealing.

Shame you dislike the new Huron model...personally, I love it; and I'd have been thrilled to see what a guy with your painting and conversion skill could do with it!

That was my first paint scheme on my first models (Terminators) back in 1988 or so. Looks nice. Wish more people would use the old colours with patterned schemes. Might have to get some terminators commissioned like that.

EDIT Damnation, didn't mean to necro this, thought it was a separate site area. My fault.

Say less do more.
