what are good things to take vs we with he at 1000 points and 1500 points

At 1000 i wouldn't want more than 1 mage probably as i think it can be ott
at 1500 2 would be likely for me.

so what units, characters, items, spells, combinations are best or worth avoiding.

What tactics should i bear in mind?

asinal that will kill them all by its self.

Or if you dont want to be cheesy.
Do you know if he has alot of shooting... caverly is the way to go against shooty WE armies.

against combat WE armies you need a balenced force.

at 1500 2 mages one with seer and jewel of the dusk so you can choose master of woods. stops them hiding in them.

at 1000 1 mage with seer and jewel of the dusk.

Spellsinger with Lvl 2 Wizard,
Branchwraith with Lvl 1 Wizard,
10 Glade Guard
10 Glade Guard
5 Scouts
10-12 Dyads
3-5 Warhawk Riders
5-8 Waywatchers

This is roughly what i would suspect him to take based on the models he has. he does have some glade riders and wild riders too but he bought the warhawks and branchwraith the other day so doubt he'll want to not use these and wouldn't have enough points for any more specialised choices.

One thing i've had a little trouble with in the past is that he can Snipe my mages which makes them very Vulnerable. Anything i can do about this?

At 1500 points (i dont have HE book on me at the moment)

commander on eagle with reaver bow (if yur allowed 3 chatrcters) hv,gw,sh 180
mage Lv 2 seer, jewel of the dusk 175
mage lv 2 ring of fury barded steed 170
8 silver helms FC 219
5 silver helms 115
5 silver helms 115
5 dragon prices 130
2 chariots 170
2 egles 100

i dont have the book or a caculater on this computer so this might not add up but it should be close.
If you cant take 3 heroes take out either the eagle charecter or the one with the ring.

If you want to win at any cost take asinal.

Against wood elves, you really just need to steamroll up the board. If you have enough stuff and get there fast enough, your opponent will be hard pressed to shoot down everything. It doesn't really make for a pretty game, but the more maneouvering and finesse the game involves, the more you're handing the game to the wood elf player. So, with that in mind, I'd take a lot of hard hitting and fast troops that can get across the board quickly and finish the fight relativly fast. Chariots and cavarly is all good.

can't remember his stat's at the moment, but is he realy that good? TBH a dragon tends to die quickly in most games I've seen.

Woodelves have real trouble against a dragon, as they have no war machines and are generally S3 with little/no static CR. Asarnil will probably die, but his dragon should mince the rest of them.

It is a bit unfair, but if you want to win at all costs...You do need to take another character to be your general though.

Asarnil is on page six. I have the model and I apply him liberally. Nothing like having a dragon in a <2K game!

Go for magic and cavalry against wood elfs. Banner of sorcery is good and so is banner of ellyrion. You donīt need much combat resolution, if you just get the charge in you will win almost every time. You need many small durable and fast units to ensure that he canīt run away from you. If you can chuck some magic missile at him it wonīt be pretty either. Wood elves are obscenely fragile.

I think speed will be key as well. You need to get at him as fast as possible in order to try to negate his shooting as much as possible. Eagles and Silver helms will allow you to do this. You could try to play him at the sniping game by taking some Shadow warriors. I also reckon that having a couple of mages may be a good idea as well equipt with stuff like the ring of fury. Its been ages since I have played as or against any type of Elf though :(
