the way me and my mates do it, is we roll for distance. And if they catch the fleeing unit, they do so at the point were they fleeing unit stopped moving, and the persuers stop right in that spot.

Resent reading on this forum, however, has made me see another variant.
If the persuers roll equal to, or higher than the fleeing unit, they cut them down were they stand and then move the full 2D6" forwards.

Is this second the right way to do it?

When breaking from combat, a unit is killed on the spot if the pursuers roll higher.
When fleeing from a charge or for any other reason than breaking from combat, you move the fleeing unit first and then check if the pursuing unit reaches it.

Page 40 of the rulebook for how breaking from combat works.
Page 22 of the rulebook for how fleeing from a charge works.

Clearly those pages are in need of being read by your gaming group Delgosh.

Indeed. This is described in the section "Remove fleeing units if caught" (p. 40).
