FINALLY!!! Someone who is in deeper than me! But, my problem most of the things I need to get painted aren't even mine. Maybe I should start a thread like this to get my act in gear!!

On your front... I have a few questions...

Which one are you closest to completing?
- by completing things, you will feel good about yourself and you will want to do more.

What do you want to paint?
- by painting what you want to paint, then you will get things done and you won't get sick of painting as quickly... because you will... I am in my down time right now...

What do you want to play with?
- by painting what you want to play with right now, you will get the motivation to complete that project.

Do you want to paint one thing at a time?
- by having a variety of things to paint, you can diversify what you are working and therefore not getting sick of one thing in particular.

Do you need two boxes of Last Chancers?
- just thought I would slip that one in, since I have been looking one for a very long time now...

To sum up:

I vote for guard. Your baneblade is coming along nicely and it sounds like you have a good start on a complete army.

well, i think the most sensible thing to do would do the elysians first, because undoubtably they'll be the army you're most into at the moment if you're just about to get your hands on those FW goodies.

Now get to work. Faster!

Don't buy anything else until you have completed all the unfinished kits

Oh and tell your friend, who works in the model shop, that he is a bad influence on you :p

There we go! I got it! You should ask to be banned... that would give you tonnes of time to get cracking on your minis...

As for Wintermute's idea... yeah... doesn't work for me either... and I don't have ANY Forgeworld... I know blasphemy...

Jees o!! I WISH I had that many models! But without the bothering of having to paint them all, I would have great fun building and converting them all. And don't like the idea of getting kicked into action by any of these guys (or girls).

Great start to the baneblade. I have another idea though for all your stuff. Instead of painting it all, give a portion to me so I can finish my SM army. It's a win-win situation if you ask me.

Looking forward to seeing the baneblade fully painted.

oh my heck!!!! 53??? that sire is amazing.

my new army is suffering not from lack of paint but lack of cash.... everything I buy I must paint before I buy again, that is my new rule. after a build up like yours with my first 2 armys.

oh yea *cracks whip*

Indeed, very much a pimp.

I'll start with a complaint though, why isn't the baneblade greener?

Then a follow-up compliment, seeing your army really has inspired me to try something similar (ie. single colour scheme for both guard and marines), I should be slowly embarking on this project sometime next year :p.

Great stuff and good luck.

He is probably a professional athlete or a politician ;)

I like the baneblade, a lot. I was wondering about the surface, it looks really glossy...varnish? Ink washes?

The sentinel doenst look as glossy, so I assume it if it gloss/inks, you matte sprayed it...or Im just crazy :)

Nice work, thats certainly a start.

However, my one bit of advice is this: paint some infantry (boring stuff) or you will just end up with a bunch of painted vehicles and forgeworld stuff and no army...trust me...Ive done it ;)

nice work on the baneblade so far. and with what to paint next, i would go with the finish an army and the shortest one. i wouldnt paint a little of this or a little of that eitehr. becasue it gets a littel annoying that you never seem to see the light at the end of the tunnel. believe me i have been collecting for 15 years and have ammassed quite a collection.

what is nice is small niche armies in the middle of this or stuff like blood bowl and necromunda.
16 models for a full blood bowl team and its finished, hit something like that in between armies does seem to help with the accomplishments.

its the one good reason i am doing my deathwing before i start my kroot or bugs (havent decided which, but prob kroot) the 31 figs are done, just have to get some DA green paint tuesday for my crusader and 3 dreads and it is complete.

24-01-2006, 01:57
It seems to me that the plates underneath the turrets could use with a greening, as they seem to be the only raised plates without such treatment. this is of course, just me, and it's not my tank. Also, I'd expected it to turn out much greener anyway, so, pre-conception and all that.

Looking like it contained Valkryie door gunners in it? If so could you explain have you a Valkyrie hidden away someplace?

I dont know if it the proper thing but it helps, it warps the bases so they come off eazyer plus the joints get a bit weaker so i can eaze arms and guns off the bodys ,As for the gaunts there metal arnt they if so the good old Nitromoors will strip them in a day or 2 but this stuff burn skin and melts rubber and some plastics so be careful
This is some of my ebay stuff ive won and have started to strip these have had about 5 days in Nitromoors

I use Nitromoors for metal and dot 3 or 4 brake fluid for the plastics ,Nitromoors can be got at most hardware store :)

Orcdom
30-01-2006, 17:19
and to mention boiling the figs ought to be done with a strainer or a double broiler to keep the figs off the bottom of the pan.
also if you want to break superglue joins and rubber cement (god knows why someone would assemble figs with this but they do) i hear overnight in the freezer works great.

break fluid works great, and you can use a laquer thinner (paint thinner) to strip all metal figs fast (few minutes), just break the bases off before hand. and if you need to get rid of the thinner when your done, just sit your container outside with the lid off and it will evaporate.

As Blue Peter say heres one I made earlyer :)
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/3426/project0386tw.jpg
In stead of the snow im thinking of making a small puddle ,I use green stuff to make the base ,I will varnish the guard then cut them off the bases,It just make it a lot eazyer to make the bases ,I leave the bits of sprues i used when i stuck the guard to the bases so that i can glue them back on,Im trying to get away from bases that make my minis look like there sinking :)

31-01-2006, 03:16
Im trying to get away from bases that make my minis look like there sinking
I have started to see this too when I base my models, the sand gets around their boots and covers up some of the foot. Cork bases can stop this but then everyone always brings up the point of where do you do battle where everyone finds a perfect rock to stand on.... So Ive kind of just stopped using those bases so much, only now and then to break up the monotnous feeling you can sometimes get with bases.

KayvaanShrike
31-01-2006, 11:39
Well the way I do my bases at the moment is to hav patches of sand on them rather than the whole base covered, and so you dont get the sense that the model is as you say, sinking, I then paint the whole base graveyard earth then drybrush the sands areas lighter with dwarf flesh and then bleached bone. Then a few small patches of static grass and they are done.

Why not paint up something that enables you to actually field a legal force? That way you can take your minis outside and actually play a game with them.

better off if adding any green would be to the top reinforced part, but if you did add it to the bottom, just be sure to take into account most of the green is going to be knocked off from actual use of going through difficult terrain.

its good to see that you can stay right at it, like assembly during dry time. i have to get away from it on prolonged dry times anymore, its hard to keep focused anymore.

you said 3 chapters you have to do, i see DA and white knights (i think that was right) what was the 3rd.

i have almost half of a company of dark angels painted and i am thinking of finishing it, just not sure what company to do, no decals are done.

WHAT?!? C'mon, these models are to (what I'd call) a very good gaming standard, I wouldn't say they were poor at all.

And to strip them after all those hours of painting... :( I definitely could never do that with an entire army!!! :skull:

Keep up with your massive paint-load anyway, it's all looking good!

KayvaanShrike
07-02-2006, 22:41
I would suggest starting wiht a darker colour to represent the wound itself, a blackish/red gore mix maybe? Then i would maybe use a wash of red gore then a wash of blood red, not to thin it run everywhere tho, and then maybe put some red ink on it, then use the pot of varnish or any gloss varnish to just varnish the blood area to give it a wet look? Thats what I would suggest.

Anyone else got any ideas on how to paint blood?

I would try a combination of chestnut ink and red ink... Not sure how that would look as I have only tried the 'dried/fresh' blood through a bandage. It looked ok, nothing too spectacular. I would say it would have to be a combination of... 75 red to 25 chestnut... not sure...

I am generally not a fan of the blood on minis, but in this case, I believe it is an important part of the model. I would try to stay away from the black, I would think maybe a red/brown then add a flesh colour to it, then back to reds with inks...

All I can think of...

That, Deadley it certainly does! But I feel sure you will devise a way to gain this effect. I did it on a small cut on my Chaplains head, and it looks ok, well I think so anyway, but then again I just love that model.
What are you painting just now, you command squad fellows? Ever get that camo on your snipers done?

Hey, the other thing you could do is poke your hand with a needle (sterilized of course) and squirt real blood on it?!? Or paint it on, that would look real... a little morbid, but real.

Feeling a little queezy at that idea...

I think it might have to be a mixture of paint and ink... I really don't think a good result could be gained from just ink, or just paint... but if someone can prove otherwise...

real blood does add a touch of 'realism' to your models to say the least! :p

honestly, i've seen actual blood look really cool on mini's, just.. needling yourself to get it is OTT, in my opinion, its only if you gash your fingers while converting (otherwise, its not earned boy!) ;)

KayvaanShrike
08-02-2006, 00:10
Sounds like one way for sure!! So if you ever slice your finger open, save some of the blood in a container an use that! :)

if you are still on the blood thing i tend to use a bit of red and chestnut ink bout 50 -50 then add enough scab to 'alter' the colour then a little megenta ink again just enough to change the tone.........try it for size ! needs a little practise with the mixes but i use megenta ink in some way for all of my wounds/blood....hopr this helps

oh yeh forgot use gloss varnish on it when you are done .

There is something about the big guys face. As if it needed a bit more work. Just checked your Guard and I know what I'm missing. You usually do not paint eyes, quite understandable considering the amount of eyes to paint. However, all those Guardsmen are either smaller or have eyes in the shade from helmet. The big guy (Creed?) has a bigger face that easier attracts attention, so maybe it would be worth trying doing his eyes.

Yeah, I bought it too. But for non UK residents it was available only from us ebay for $9, so slightly more expensive. Did not have time to go through it yet (850 pages....).

As to Banner colours, you could go with green background and golden details, or you could recreate the colours no the floor of thet Sanctuary Chappel. The second option would probably look better.

Cheers for the comments,Well yesterday i found it hard to pick up the brushes the guard are getting to me :( There grinding me down .So what does evreybody else do to keep them going ,Do you take a break and paint something else or just have a couple of nights building stuff
Last night i managed to finish building 5 guard and i started on the 2 flags and started a Tau test model ,I fell that the flags have given me a mental block becuase if they look poor then it doesnt matter how good the rest of the mini is it will still look bad.
I feel like that ive wasted a night messing with different minis when i shouldve stuck to just 2 :(

Yeah man, I know that feeling, sometimes it just gets tedious. Do you watch movies/listen to music or anything while you work?

I find that helps relieve my rampant ADD, and allows me to work a little longer.

Sometimes just stop, go read your guard codex or a badass 40k novel and getting into the fluff is a good way to recharge, too...kind of motivates you to get back to making that army :D

stopping depends on what you have left to paint for me anyways.
if you only got a small handfull left, finish them, if you have a box or more, paint something else.
monsters are great for that, or in the case of 40K vehicles, esp for another race.
and character models as well.
paint up a squad of the tau once you find a color scheme that works and try to go back, if that dont work for you try a second squad then you may have to force yourself to go back, but dont leave it unfinished.

A change can be as good as a rest.

If I get bored with whatever I'm painting, one solution is to paint something completely different. By this I mean painting a different type of kit and/or something in a totally different scale.

Which is why I'm painting a Warmachine Khador Juggernaut Warjack at the moment.

I've been a bit reluctant to buy that ebay thing because I dont know whats in it.

I dont want to buy it and find out he's ripped off the work of a lot of hard working painters out there who put up tutorials etc to help people for free.

I know it'd help me - sure as hell know I need to do better camera work on my models, and my basing needs improving as does my so far nonexistant NMM. But do it to line someone elses pockets for doing nowt? Nope couldnt do that

As to flags, they get well with the guard. Whan you look at historical 18-19th century reference such falggs often would be adorned with golden fringes, lettering or ropes (you see I'm biased and am trying to convice you on those gold elements:evilgrin: )

Deadly, with the types of leaves that those plants have, I think the rained on look wouldn't work so well. They'd be droopy (I think) if there was enough water to make it worth modeling, and then it would just look odd. I think you'd be better off not bothering.

As for the Female Commissar, I really don't think you are going to find one on a store shelf anywhere. They were released in the US yes, but only for a limited amount of time. I honestly think the best chance you have would be to find one on eBay. (I have painted 3 or 4 of them... some of them were cast really badly... they shouldn't have left the factory, just as a warning when looking for one)

Nice and neat, very good job. What is the thing that looks like a laundry hamper for? Beside the paint station and lamps and the like.

Heres a quick test with the photo cube,The cube needs a good iron and needs to be a bit more solid on the base.

i always set my exposure compensation to +2, if you do this it will get rid of the crease's that are visible in the pics and will make your mini's look nice and bright:)
give it a try and see if it works, it does for me

Cool room Deadley, I miss painting a lot just now, because I am stuck at uni, and its just not practical to paint here, and my desk lamp is broken which dosent help :(. But its easter soon, so I can go home and paint to my hearts content, and might even start a little project log of my own since I will have a camera and space there!. But back on topic, your models are looking amazing, what are you painting just now? A 10 man squad? Whats after the kaskrin?

I always highlight black using browns or shadow grey mixed with black, as if i mix white with black it looks too pastel and grainy in my opinion.

But as said, keep the highlights subtle, so the main colour is black.

Oh ok, cool, are your karkrins going to be the same colours as the current ones you have yeah? Cause they look mean!! (In a good way of course) Nice and dark and sinister, and actually look quite elite, which is quite hard to achieve on a model who is supposed to be more elite than normal troopers. But you have done it well I think. Well done

Wow, you were lucky... Friday I was about to take a photo of my foot and post it here! But, with all your cleaning and organization... the foot remains well hidden.

Again your progress is very commendable, you are a motivator to us all!

Keep it up!!

Cool stuff, particularly the commander, will the skin on all your guardsmen be the same standard as his?

With skin im a bit hit a miss if you know what i mean if i paint 10 guard at a time there skins tone is all the same nearly but compare to other guard they would be a bit differant ,I think i would look a bit strange if they all looked the same :) so ive been trying different colours and tones

No, he's my best mate gav. He just wishes he was Jes. . . don't we all.

Deadly, you are THE man. . . The Chuck Norris of painting. I've just read throught the thread and I'm very much inspired to start a log of my own for the completion/expansion of my own IG. Although I initialy didn't like the colour scheme for your vehicles, it has grown on me. . . and the infantry, they are the badass shiznit!

Keep up the good work old chap! I look forward to your next set of goodies.

Dave out.
