Whilst doing the titan and Wood Elf commissions featured elsewhere, I haven't been able to resist using some models for myself and, having a huge pile of second-hand LOTR minis, I thought I'd start myself an Isengard army for the SBG. Here's my first unit of Uruk-Hai:

And close-up on their leader, Lurtz:

The white hand on his face looks quite good, I own several LOTR models and know how small thos faces are! Keep up the magnificent work, plus we don't see enough LOTR models round here.

You'll be seeing a lot more from me. I have about two hundred more to paint, plus a bunch of broken minis that will be converted in various ways.

Here're the first finished models in my Orc Archers company:

OMG!!! TEH CLONEZ LOLZORZ

*ahem*

But seriously, very nice painting... it's dark and fits the scene perfectly. It's also very nice to see orcs not painted like their greenskin warhammer cousins :p

I actually had real trouble working out a good skin colour, as I'm colour blind and working out what colour they're supposed to be in the film was something of a challenge. I went for a 50/50 mix of Dark Flesh and Adeptus Battlegrey.

As to the clone thing... yeah, I know. As it happens, I do have some different ones but coincidence dictated that the ones I finished first all looked the same.

I'm really liking those white hand designs on the shields. Consider them stolen, but in a good way!

I did two more Uruk Hai today and, in the interests of variety, felt moved to do a pair of Numenorean warriors, as I have a pair of regiments all ready and waiting for undercoat (these two happened to be already undercoated by the previous owner):

I'm not actually terribly pleased with the Numenoreans, which look just as dark and bland in real life as they do in this picture. Unfortunately, I can't find any really good reference images for this sort of warrior - either photos from the films or close-up pics of miniatures - to work from. I'll probably add some additional colour to their comrades and try to fit these losers in with the crowd...

Good to see some of the more well-known warseerites dabbling into L.o.t.R.! What to say about the painting? It's great. Númenoreans are quite good models, but bland to the extreme. It's hard to stay with the movie-scheme and make them interesting. I'm sure you'll crack that nut. :)

The various white hand designs add flavour and life to your uruk-hai, and including orc auxilliaries really help. Perhaps you could include some goblin ravagers, as well? I think they're called ravagers; great weapon-toting gobbos with a bandit outlook.

Anyway, good job! And I also hope we'll see some Isengard trolls.

I'm a complete ignoramus in this game. My plan is to paint up the vast horde I bought from a friend, pretty much regardless of how it works on the tabletop, then play with it and sell the stuff that doesn't work to raise money to buy the stuff I think might.

I have about five or six companies' worth of goblin warriors and archers, plus a load of goblin spearmen. I've got two Uruk Hai Demolition teams (I've finally worked out!) that will probably get my attention next week, plus a load of bits and bobs in insufficient quantity to make up WOTR companies, annoyingly (as that's where I want to end up in a few months).

That's not including all of the good forces: two companies of Numenoreans, four of Gondor warriors, two of Gondor archers, and maybe one each of Elf Archers and Warriors.

I'm still talking the language of the SBG at the moment, as I get to grips with what I've got. I plan to play that game out for the next 6-12 months and then make the transition to WOTR. I was tempted by Harad, but the Uruk Hai have seriously won me around: they are such cool models (much cooler than almost any Man race except, possibly, Rohan) and get to include Ringwraiths, which just make me drool with delight (was a model ever so easy to make look cool on the battlefield?).

It's true! Saruron was seduced me to the side of Mordor!

Speaking of which, I suppose I should get a Saruman figure, too...

well-known warseerites

Moi? I'm a jonny-come-lately compared to most of the true veterans.

More Uruk-Hai. I think these guys come from the Demolition team pack, but I rather like them as plain Uruk-Hai warriors without shields (IIRC, shields are an upgrade for Uruk-Hai Warriors).

Quick update on where I've got so far. Further progress is being hampered by my lack of Chaos Black spray... again. I swear, something sneaks into my studio at night and mainlines that stuff.

OK, it's been a while. But I've not abandoned this army, by any means. I've been busy with commissions but, in the background, I've been gradually beavering away and was hoping to have a load of new photos to show you.

Typically, my camera's batteries failed after just one picture. So here are some goblins to whet your appetite:

More as soon as my batteries have re-charged!

Ooo! Nice. Simple and effective, especially on 25mm stuff.

Any chance of more?

Not dead yet!!

I recently acquired a shedload more Isengard minis and am trying to get them painted alongside my commissions:

I also picked this up on eBay, for a bit of fun:

Phew! I finally found time to work on my own minis, for a change, instead of other people's. And I had an Isengard Troll Captain awaiting my attention. One speed paint later:

Great stuff mate, glad to see your painting some of your own models for a change, you have done the rusted metal effect rather well, How do the LoTR models scale up against the Mantic Range? How easy do you think it would be to convert some Warriors of Minas Tirith into grave guard/Revenant infantry?

Is that you, Mark? I just emailed you a suggestion.

Nice models I especially like the armour on the troll and urkus. You can bend some lotr models to an extent such as those orc archers and the swordsmen if you want more poses.
