Isn't it a little wierd that the Index Astartes has the Grey Knights armour as being black with Silver shoulderpads and arms?

It's was case of bad printing of colour nothing more Grey Knights is also just a name and nothing more as when they first came out they was painted Gold.

I did not know they were gold when they first came out. That one is new to me lol.

And I just figured they were a 'dark grey' in the picture so that the silver trim and such would stand out a bit more.

lol. Thanks, Grissom. And thanks, Andrew. I remember the models but had never seen them painted up like that. I remember the datacard they had in whichever set that was, but I believe they were all very much grey in that picture.

I used to have the one on the bottom left there. He was my Chapter Master in for my DIY chapter back in 2nd and the start of 3rd. Man, I feel old now lol.

I always though the very fist Grey Knights were black with golden trim. I think I've even seen pictures of them. Must have been some other chapter then, or something.

The first army list in Realms of Chaos: Slaves To Darkness never gave a colour scheme, as I recall.

I've still got an entire 5-man squad of those old Grey Knights - 3 different bodies, 3 different pairs of arms and a choice of 2 weapons. I really should repaint them sometime.

They're supposed to not be painted. There is some contraversy as to what color unpainted ceramite is. That picture shows it as a very dark grey bordering on black, modern interpretations are generally silver or a flat gray.

On the other hand, the Pre Heresy Death Guard wore unpainted armor and they're white. So ceramite is probably white (which makes sense as its usually accepted as a form of ceramic not metal...

I always thought they looked best in grey.

I'm of Engel's side that model looks awesome.

Maybe a dark grey/black looks coolest and is amazingly effective in grimdark, but the fluff states they're grey.

Technically, mine are grey. ;) Astronomican Grey base with a heavy badab black wash, highlights of Astronomican Grey and Codex Grey. So really, nothing but grey. :D

I'd say that Badab black made the world of difference.

I'd say what colour they are is a 'grey' area... Get it? :)

it's not black it's dark grey (some dark shadow grey i guess) that make a big contrast with the mithril silver boots and arms

I am not sure that I would go with those images that show Grey Knights entirely in gold.

The reasons for that is back in the day there were very few 'official' paint schemes. For example back in Rogue Trader space marines could be painted in camo schemes with only their chapter markings informing you which chapter they belonged to - especially vehcles.

I think silver has always been the acceptable or normal approach to their colour scheme. Thats not to say they can't be grey or black or gold. I used to paint mine exactly as in that image silver with gold trim.

Some Chapters still do use camo schemes in some fields of operation they never got taken out of has a Chapter Works just some Chapters see it's benefits.
