View Full Version : This is MAYHEM! Dan Tackles WoC

Another log. I recently traded my DE for a full, unpainted WoC army. There won't be a whole ton of conversion work on this one, as my goal now is to just get an army fully painted. We'll see how that goes...

I've been working on basing things and I'll introduce them as I begin painting. For now, however, to perhaps draw some interest I give you my warshrine of tzeentch:

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/022.jpg

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/023.jpg

Why are they hauling a horse around, you ask? It's chaoooossss! Actually it's a statue. I have some green stuffing to do yet, but you get the idea.

Stay tuned. This is going to be fast paced.

This looks very interesting. What sort of effect are you planning to put at the bases of the tendrils?--I assume they're not going to be growing out of wood? Some sort of slime covering might look good.

They weren't so much "lost", as "intentionally misplaced". And thank you. :)

Please, let it be a horse, not a mere statue. :)
Why can't it be both?

I'm truly honored. Is there any way we can change your login name to include "the acceptably righteous"?

Actually it won't be wood. Once it's all green stuffed up the main part of the "base" will be stone. And yes, the tentacles will be "morphing" out of the stone, gradually changing color up the tentacles from grey to blue, purple, and red. I think it will look better than it might sound.

AAAAGH! Heretic! Where are the Empire?!?!?!:D Looks fantastic! Keep it up(but only if you've worked on your Empire first)
The empire have taken a back burner to this project, as I'm working towards a tournament with them. I'd apologize, but it's chaos.

Nice, i love the idea of the statue!
i do WOC chaos too, and i'm not sooo fond of warshrines and i think i'll wait till the second release, if the gw model looks bad, i'll convert a few of my own.

Well at some point I wanted to become a guilder anyway, so if I do I'll have my rank say "the acceptably righteous". :)

Update time.

Phase 1 of my chosen conversion:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/056.jpg

Simple arm swaps, gave the marauders warrior shields. Eventually I plan to GS some chainmail/ armor. Here's another angle:

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/057.jpg

Again, they're still WIP. I also did a sample paint job for my nurgle warriors:

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/058.jpg

Pretty easy scheme, and I only have 24 of them to paint :p. 21 to go. I still need to add static grass to the base, but otherwise they're done.

Anyway, back to work.

I'm guessing there's washes involved. Looks neat. How long does it take to paint a warrior like that? Cause I've been considering Nurgle WoC for some time, and was going for a look like that.
But I'm anxious to know, is this a replacement for the Empire, or will the men of Sigmar be back in style (soon)?

Washes are involved, though it's more of a final step. Here's what I do for the armor:

-Basecoat dark angels green.
-Highlight edges with snot green.
-Thin highlight of goblin green.
-Heavy wash with devlan mud.
-Re-highlight goblin green (now darker) with goblin green
-Light wash of devlan mud (just in recesses and low parts to make them extra dirty).

Here's a shot of the back:

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/059.jpg

Believe it or not that's just one color: bubonic brown. I do a thin coat, wash it with devlan, another coat, wash, coat, wash, etc. In the end it's about 6-7 coats, and I think it looks pretty cool.

I'd estimate if I applied myself (and didn't watch movies while I painted) it would take about 45 minutes to do a model. I'll time myself tonight. As for the Empire, they're still sitting on my shelf. They're not going anywhere, but I can't motivate myself to paint them.

The painted warriors look nice, it's a good scheme, will look great across a whole army. The Chosen look good, you've gotten some very animated poses from the Marauder minis there so well done! :)

I am not a fan of Nurgle (my least favorite of all the dark gods - and I think he knows, as I catch a cold quite easiley), however your very dark-green warriors look great. I really, really like cloaks though, very effective painting on your behalf.

Looking forward to the Warshrine. Can we expect some other gods troops or is this an all-out Nurgle-force?

Lord Dan
09-11-2009, 20:42
Actually very little will be nurgle. My typical list runs as follows:

Tzeentch Sorcerer lord on disk
Tzeentch sorcerer
Nurgle Sorcerer
Khorne exhalted hero on juggernaut

15 slaanesh marauders
15 slaanesh marauders
12 nurgle warriors
12 nurgle warriors
5 hounds
5 hounds

5 khorneate knights
5 khorneate knights

2 spawns
tzeentch warshrine

I later plan on adding some trolls, warriors of other marks, some different heroes (slaanesh lord on dragon, anyone?), and a chariot or two if/when the models rumored for next year come out. Sorry for the delay in progress with this log - I've been visiting family for the last couple of weeks.

Thanks for the support!

naturally the warriors mouth allready grew on the horn so he doesnt have to worry about his head getting pounded...
besides if you have a big bunch of warriors and all have a helmet they generally cant take it of seeing that the fluff tells the armour of chaos warriors grows on their skin

Yes, I know he's covered in slaanesh symbols. That will be remedied soon after an hour of intense filing.

Where did the two pincer looking things on the side of the dics come from? Are they Nid bits? I am looking for something to use as the basis for another disc for my army (I have two more to build).

P.s. Disc looks very cool.

Just in case you missed it (though I don't think you have), there are still some mold-lines on the Nid-parts.

Elazar The Glorified

Love the disc, but it's blasphemy to have Slaaneshi Sigvald riding that Tzeentchian 'contraption' hehe! :) Should look the part once you'd de-Slaaneshed him though ;)
You'll have to watch as he has quite a few subtle Slaaneshi symbols (such as the necklace) in addition to the more obvious ones on the armour and shield etc. Looking forward to seeing him finished.

They're some tyranid bitz I picked up somewhere along the line. I've had them for years, so I'm glad I finally found a use for them.

Merry Christmas!

My gift this year? A light box. So without any more introduction, 12 completed warriors:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/025.jpg

I changed the shield emblem to gold, as I went through and "scratched" the models with silver. That ended up being way too much silver. A closer shot:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/027.jpg

I originally based the movement tray as well, but for some reason the material I used for sand (I think it's crushed almond) doesn't stick well to plastic, even when it's been painted and sealed. So I stripped it off and went with a simple, classic looking "wood" color paintjob. The cloaks:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/028-3.jpg

And finally, the WIP on my chaos lord "Bahama Momma":
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/031-2.jpg

He's so close to being done it hurts. I need to paint his axe, some trinkets on his belt, and then do the base. After that it's a coating of dullcoat and into the trenches with him.

I have a 500 point escalation league starting next month, which means I need to finish him, 10 marauders, and 5 warhounds in the next week or so. Expect updates.

Lord Dan
02-01-2010, 01:13
Another update. So I think I figured out how to remove the grainy effect present on the previous batch of pictures. Behold, my chariot of khorne!

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/021.jpg
I figure if khorne is going to bless a chariot, it's not going to be pulled by horses. It's going to be on fire, and surfing on the backs of a pack of fleshounds.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/022-4.jpg

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/023-3.jpg

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/024-2.jpg

Anyway, it was nice to model something as a break from all the painting I've been doing for this league, but I'm still left with 7 marauders to paint. I'll give you an update in the next couple of days with an army shot of my first 500 points.

Thanks, gents. The marauder pants are actually intentionally girly if that's any consolation. Being Slaanesh I wanted them to look...well, kind of silly. At least it's not the hot pink with purple stripes I tried out on a test model. ;)

gotta say that the chainmail on the marauder look really nice.
Thanks. I tried it out on a few of them just as practice, though it's way too time consuming to do it on all 30. More importantly, they don't have light armor.

Every camera is going to be a bit different, but in the end I found I was just toying with the settings too much. I'm using a light box now and that helps with decreasing shadows, however I flipped the camera back to it's automatic settings. Just be sure to remove the flash, flip on any "detail mode" you might have (mine is a button that comes up with a picture of a flower), and keep a steady hand as best you can.

Great stuff as usual.
Bahama Momma looks great. And the chariot is just awesome, though imho the champion should look the way the chariot is going, right now he looks a little too leaned back considering he's riding on flames and fleshhounds (and being a Khornate in general - certainly not the most releaxed folks out there).

I completely agree about the head. The model was actually intended for something else and I thought the pose was perfect for the chariot. I didn't notice the way he was looking until you pointed it out. Consider it done.

Now, it's update time!

First up, 5 of the completed marauders.
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/006-3.jpg
5 to go and I'm done with my first 60 point throwaway unit...

And another view. Some will note the pants haven't changed. For this I cannot apologize, only hope you find them slightly more aesthetically pleasing:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/007-5.jpg
I think the basing helps with toning up the testosterone a little.

Next up, the completed Khornate general. Due to recent victories against particular opponents, he has been renamed:

Commander Gargobot the Prince-Slayer
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/009-4.jpg
The axe was done with a method taken right out of Solun's log.

And an army shot so far:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/012-3.jpg

30 points left to paint and January will be finished! Then I get to start on some knights.

So another update, I now have the first 500 points fully painted:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/012-4.jpg

Some might notice a new addition, which is a unit of 5 warhounds:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/011-4.jpg

At my LGS we're doing a 6 month escalation league, with a 2,000 point (fully painted) tournament at the end. Each month you get 3 games, so there will be a winner of the escalation league as well. Right now my standings are:

2 massacres (Dark Elves, Bretonnians), 1 loss (High Elves)

Each month you get another 300 points. My next 300 will be 5 knights of khorne and 10 more marauders. Here's a sneak peek:
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb113/SirLordDan/015-2.jpg

And some of the conversion work on the knights. Sorry for the pink picture, I forgot to fix it before loading up to photobucket:

So I have 15 days to paint them up. Wish me luck.
