View Full Version : Jim Reaper's Attempt to Motivate Himself

Jim Reaper
19-01-2006, 13:55
Right, I got a big pile of Dwarfs for Christmas, and I've started this bloggy thing in an attempt to make me finish them.

Basically I need to paint the contents of the Army Box, plus a Battleforce, plus an extra Runesmith and Engineer I bought, plus a Lord with Shieldbearers, and finally a Bolt Thrower or two once they come out.

Assembled so far:
20 Warriors with HW/Shield
16 Warriors with Great Weapons
10 Quarrellers (Unit 1)
6 Quarrellers (Unit 2)
8 Thunderers
16 Hammerers*
1 Cannon
1 Organ Gun
10 Slayers
2 Runesmiths
2 Engineers
1 Thane
1 Battle Standard Bearer
1 Grudge Thrower
1 Bolt Thrower

To assemble:

4 Warriors with Great Weapons
4 Quarrellers
4 Thunderers

To buy:
Another Bolt Thrower?

*The Hammerers are converted from Dwarf Warriors - basically I didn't think it made much sense to have Longbeards as Warriors with facemasks, so the Hammerers are Warriors with the masks, the great weapon arms with the Champion's hammer head (plenty spare) stuck on the top. There's a converted Gate Keeper too.

Now this is where it gets painful:

20 Dwarf Warriors with HW/Shield
1 Dwarf Lord with Shieldbearers
1 Runesmith
10 Quarrellers
1 Cannon & Crew
16 Hammerers
1 Thane
1 Bolt Thrower & Crew
4 Thunderers

In progress:
4 Thunderers

To paint:
Everything else.

Pics once my camera's charged up.

19-01-2006, 14:21
Are you going to clean the old Longbeards up and repaint them?

Anyways, I'll be keeping an eye on this. I may have to start one of my own for my nids or lizards.

Here's the pictures as promised...

It seems to be the standard thing to include a picture of your working area, so here's mine:

The whole bally lot of them (except the ones I haven't built yet)

The four models I've painted so far. Yes, I'm aware that I've wholeheartedly thieved the colour scheme from the Karak Kadrin one in the Dwarf Army book, but hey, I liked it. My hold is Karak-Grund ("Hammerhold") hence the KG in Dwarf runes on the standard and the Celtic-stylee stylised hammer. DO YOU SEE WHAT I DID THERE??!!

The four models I'm working on at the moment. Gads! They have differently coloured beards!

Jim Reaper
19-01-2006, 19:25
And finally for the moment, my very slightly converted Hammerers (the ring the Gate Keeper is holding will have keys on it eventually)

And apologies for the shoddy nature of the pictures. I'll take some better ones when it isn't my teatime.

19-01-2006, 19:54
Lookin good, I have that exact same light from IKEA at my work desk.

Jim Reaper
19-01-2006, 20:27
Some rather better pictures of my painted Warriors:

Hideous Loon
19-01-2006, 20:45
Congratulations. By coming here and making a blog, you have completed the first step towards a finished Dawi army, since we can nag on you to finish it! I like the red colourscheme you've got, seems really promising.

Jim Reaper
19-01-2006, 22:27
Taking a bit of time out from painting Warriors (the next 4 are now about 2/3 done) and putting together a Hammerer or two. Unfortunately this is, how should I put it, psychologically harrowing. You see in order to make the mask fit flush (something I note 'Eavy Metal couldn't be bothered doing) you have to CUT OFF THE DWARF'S FACE.

See the WIP Hammerer below. Note that he HAS NO FACE.

P.S. Never buy Humbrol Poly Cement in tubes. It haemorrages glue at an astonishing rate.

Jim Reaper
20-01-2006, 16:13
Right, that's those four done (won't bother with a picture, as they look just like the other four). Onto the next four, including the Veteran, and they shall have... ginger beards.

Also making a start on the Shieldbearers as I'm buying the Lord in town tomorrow and I want him done as soon as possible as the model is SO GOOD.

Note I've updated my progress at the top, I'm an organised fella me.

20-01-2006, 19:01
Yes, that faceless dwarf is a little on the disturbing side.

Steady progress so far though, that's good. Just keep it up man!

20-01-2006, 23:28
These look really awesome. I love the banner/shields especially.

Whatever lighting/digicam settings you used on the last 2 shots, use it everytime...WAY better photos.

Have you considered using a darker shade for the red? Value-wise, it almost seems to run into the metal color. Could be the photos, however.

Good work.

Jim Reaper
21-01-2006, 21:37
Right, nigh on two days solid work and one utterly destroyed back later (does anyone have a way of stopping yourself hunching too much? I find after even a short painting session I have a pretty bad backache), here's my army general, the Lord Ranulf Brighthelm. Sadly the photos don't show up the many many layers I did on the flesh very well, you'll just have to trust me on that one :p

EDIT: And as to the red, the pictures are actually showing that up a bit bright - it's considerably darker in real life.

21-01-2006, 22:04
Damn, that's looking mighty nice. The patterns on the bearer's helmet are a nice touch.

Maybe I'm wrong on this, but I think the shield could benefit form a tadge more depth. The gold has come out nicely, but perhaps some slight silvery highlights wouldn't go amiss. Might just be me.

21-01-2006, 22:24
Score, nice work man!

I love the newer dwarf models, and you are certainly doing em justice. Keep it up!

Jim Reaper
22-01-2006, 23:59
Today I finished 4 more Warriors, the regiment's starting to take shape now with 12 models complete and most of the Command group. I'll take a picture of them tomorrow once the basing is done. 8 more of these guys to do (4 of which I haven't built yet :o better get on with that) and then it's on to the next unit. Quarrellers I reckon.

Jim Reaper
23-01-2006, 16:01
OK here's the Warriors so far...

I'll paint the movement tray at some point as well.

Right now I'm building the 4 last warriors for the unit to bring them up to the full 20, then it's on to painting another 4. Oh what fun.

23-01-2006, 16:17
Looking really good, dude!

Where did you get that movement tray? (havent played whfb in years)

Your Mum Rang
23-01-2006, 16:17
Very very nice army mate.

I love the new Dwarf models and really fancy painting them because they look relatively easy (compared to say, Wood Elves).

Keep it up!

23-01-2006, 16:26
That's a legal unit mostly done then! Good job.

Jim Reaper
23-01-2006, 16:37
Looking really good, dude!

Where did you get that movement tray? (havent played whfb in years)

The movement tray is one of GW's new textured ones, they're larger than the normal ones (will hold 25 20x20mm based models) and have the textured edges but cost a bit more (4 for 4).

23-01-2006, 17:01
Looking really good there mr Reaper Sir...

Upped the ante for when I start my Stuntys I reckon. Looking forward to starting mine now. Nearly done the Elves, so shouldnt be too long...

Jim Reaper
24-01-2006, 21:08
Ok, not a great deal done today what with it not being the weekend any more, but the next 4 guys are about half done, and they're assembled up to the full 20.

Cheers for the encouragement everyone, it really helps!

Jim Reaper
26-01-2006, 14:37
Just four guys to go and that's regiment number one! I've also painted up and static grassed the movement tray, which is something I've never done before. Must admit it looks rather funky though.

I'll have a picture once the whole lot's done, hopefully today or tomorrow.

EDIT: And here's an instructive little thing - a comparison with my old Dwarfs. Shows nicely how a) the models and b) my painting has improved (in my defence I painted the old ones about 3 years ago).

26-01-2006, 23:43
Well done sir;

I really like the lord figure.

Well do

Jim Reaper
27-01-2006, 20:07
Yeah! That's one regiment done at last. I'll put a picture of the finished Warriors up once the last few are based.

Next - a Runesmith.

27-01-2006, 23:09
Progress is beautiful, is it not? :)

Jim Reaper
28-01-2006, 12:57
Right, I promised a picture, and here it is:

Would've put up a WIP of the Runesmith up as well, except my camera ran out of batteries (which it does suspiciously often).

EDIT: Can't put up this picture without a quick compliment to the sculptor - the Warriors' musician's trumpet (I realise this sounds a little suspicious, but at least it's better than "horn") is a really nicely made component, very intricate, lots of detail, and exceptionally Dwarfy. Nice one.

28-01-2006, 18:56
Looking good there - do you think it might've been better to chop the tray up a bit though, rather than leaving the empty rank at the back?

Jim Reaper
28-01-2006, 19:27
Just finished my first Runesmith - this one's the guy out of the army box. A nice model, even if his hands are a bit big.

As to the movement tray, said runesmith will generally be in the front rank of this unit, so I need the extra space for the lonely displaced guy as a result.

28-01-2006, 19:28
Your the man Jim there nice very nice ,I like the pic of the new and old dwarfs ,How long ago did you paint your first dwarfs ?

Jim Reaper
29-01-2006, 20:33
Alrighty, the first four Quarrellers are now done. As is ever the case I'll pop a picture up once I've based 'em.

And since you asked Mr Headley, the ones in the comparison picture *were* my first Dwarfs (the rubbish ones that is :p) so that would be, er, 2002 ish.

Jim Reaper
30-01-2006, 18:03

*does Quarrellers dance*

30-01-2006, 18:07
You dah man, Reap.

30-01-2006, 21:17
Them dwarfs are looking good there sir.

Now, please post a video of this "Quarrellers Dance".

Jim Reaper
01-02-2006, 19:43
Apologies for the lack of updates, the next bunch of Quarrellers are taking a while. The accursed real world is making demands on me again.

Feel free to deliver a (metaphorical, please) kick up the backside to get me going again.

01-02-2006, 19:46
*delivers a metaphorical kick up the backside to get you going again *

Have fun,

02-02-2006, 11:11

1. Paint Dwarfs.
2. Video of Quarrellers Dance.

Jim Reaper
03-02-2006, 15:32
FINALLY got those four Quarrellers finished, even though it seems to have taken the majority of my natural life to get them done. Next up is the last two Quarrellers and the Cannon and crew.

03-02-2006, 15:44
Cool.

I also got a load of Dwarfs for Christmas, and it seems I've pinched exactly the same colour scheme you have. I am not, however, anywhere near as good at painting as you, and I've also been lacking in motivaiton. While you seem to have blitzed your way through a stonking looking horde of midgits, I've finished painting 8 shoddy warriors. :o

I love your Runesmith as well... I've had the same model sat undercoated on my desk, staring menacingly at me, for a month or so now.

I reckon I'll keep checking back here... might motivate me to get working!

03-02-2006, 15:56
FINALLY got those four Quarrellers finished, even though it seems to have taken the majority of my natural life to get them done. Next up is the last two Quarrellers and the Cannon and crew.
Good, very good indeed. Why, that's nearly a full unit of Quarrellers.

Jim Reaper
04-02-2006, 18:46
Hello peeps, bought a Bolt Thrower in town today (day of release and all, I hope you're impressed) and chuff me if it isn't lovely.

Meanwhile I'm about halfway on the Cannon and the remaining Quarrellers.

04-02-2006, 19:37
I love words like "chuff". You across-the-pond folk have the coolest slang.

Keep it up, Reap.

05-02-2006, 01:12
Wow, these are the first proper pics of the new dwarves I have seen, and seein you paintin them makes me want to paint up that unit of Beasts of Chaos I have lying around which I bought just to see what it was like to paint WHFB stuff as apposed to 40k. Might just do that, though it would have to wait til the easter hols....

Jim Reaper
05-02-2006, 19:33
Yaarggh! That's the second full unit (Quarrellers, for those with a short attention span) done. Also the Cannon. As ever, pics'll be up when they're based.

I think I'll start the Hammerers now, being as they're just Warrior models basically I'm hoping to jazz up the paint scheme - all their clothing will be red to tie in with the colour scheme rather than the muted browns on my other models.

05-02-2006, 22:25
Sounds good ol' chap. Ignoring the Lord choice for the moment, you have a nice little fieldable army from what you've painted so far. Look forward to seeing the next unit done, and the bolt thrower. That, and the video of the Quarrellers Dance.

05-02-2006, 22:33
. That, and the video of the Quarrellers Dance.

i'm still unsure what a "quarreler's dance" would look like, and second that request ;)

Jim Reaper
06-02-2006, 16:51
Jim Reaper is a man who delivers on his promises, at least when these involve pictures of Dwarfs.

Completed Quarrellers:

06-02-2006, 18:28
Wow, they look cool, be nice if that cannon was on a scenic base of its own, with slots for the crews bases. Sorry been reading WD again! Though that is a nice idea for warmachines, making them into little diaramas. Your painting is nice as well, nice an toned and highlighted and stuff like that.

Jim Reaper
06-02-2006, 18:48
I like the idea of scenic bases for war machines in principle, and the WD ones do look nice, but I tend to go quite a compact deployment in games and the bases just take up too much space!

06-02-2006, 23:29
Yeah, you seem to be getting through these stunties very nicely. Have you got any command at all for the Quarrellers (DANCE!)?

Have to admit, the textured movement trays also look rather spangly.

07-02-2006, 15:29
Those look great reap!

I wanna group shot.

Jim Reaper
07-02-2006, 15:53
A group shot eh? Never let it be said I don't give the people what they want!

The Treasure Hunter is a model I painted some months ago, he should make a nice Thane with the Rune of Brotherhood or suchlike.

07-02-2006, 16:01
Nice pic, but do you have a higher-res verison you could link to?

Jim Reaper
07-02-2006, 16:12
Okey dokey... Try this (http://simonlindsay.fotopic.net/p25715059.html). It's still not great, it doesn't seem to be at the resolution I took it and also there's a bit of camera shake. I need a tripod really.

07-02-2006, 16:17
Okey dokey... Try this (http://simonlindsay.fotopic.net/p25715059.html). It's still not great, it doesn't seem to be at the resolution I took it and also there's a bit of camera shake. I need a tripod really.
You have to set your fotopic account up so that clicking on the image gives you a full size version. At the moment, you get a fit-to-screen reduced size one, and clicking on it takes you back to the main menu. There is a linky underneath to the full size verison though.

Still, looks good. Though there is some wobble there, as you say.

07-02-2006, 19:29
They are coming on very nicely, now off the subject of pictures, where o where is this Quarrelers Dance video, that McMullet especially seems keen to see??

07-02-2006, 20:25
These stunties are looking quite nice. Almost makes me want to work on my Own fantasy guys. But, I've got a car to work on, and an Ork conversion to muddle through.

Jim Reaper
07-02-2006, 20:48
The first batch of Hammerers are now done, but I'm not sure if the colour scheme has worked out. I'll base them, then see what I (and indeed you lot) think of them.

07-02-2006, 22:48
Sounds good, lets see pics!

08-02-2006, 07:25
Jim, are you God by any chance? Those Dwarfs look INCREDIBLE! They remind me of the painting ability of a real life friend here who does his and they look almost exactly the same. Brilliant work Jim I honestly love your Dwarfs.

Do you have 6 more arms by any chance? I would even pay you up front to make me a beautiful army like that hehe

Jim Reaper
08-02-2006, 10:22
OK, here's 4 based Hammerers - I've warmed to the colour scheme a bit now but any creative criticism is welcomed!

Don't worry about the slight shininess on the bases, that's just because they hadn't dried when I took the picture.

08-02-2006, 11:03
Thats commitment to the masses!! Taking pictures while parts are still wet!! Many thanks Jim, keep up the awesome awesome work!

08-02-2006, 11:28
They look very nice, actually, the consistent uniform looks good. The masks are quite funky. The only probalem I can see is that they might look a bit monochrome from above and behind with all the redness, though I can't be sure as that angle isn't shown in the pics. Would you consider a bit of freehand patterning on the cloak at all?

Oh, by the way, is there a Hammerers Dance at all?

Jim Reaper
10-02-2006, 13:25
Not very much by the way of Dwarfs lately I'm afraid - I've taken time out to paint a Terminator Chaplain (it is after all the Best Model Ever) for my Salamanders Space Marines. It's taking a while since every part is being layered with about forty different mixes but it's nearly done and then it's back to Dwarfs!

10-02-2006, 17:55
You'll have to post a pic of it when done!

10-02-2006, 18:29
Very nice army your painting.I love the earthy colours very fitting.I especially like the golds, nice n smooth and sooo much better then NMM that sems to be in vogue.

10-02-2006, 19:40
Lookin good, Reap. Are hammerers an "elite" unit, or are they basically just dwarf warriors with double handed weapons? The reason I ask is that maybe on a unit or two, you can work in a different tunic color or something else to differentiate them from the rest of the army, without breaking the overall unity.

Jim Reaper
12-02-2006, 18:46
OK, not strictly speaking a Dwarf I suppose, but he *is* the reason I can carry on with my Dwarfs at last. Here's my finished Salamanders Chaplain (looks a bit Legion of the Damned what with the flames but never mind):

village idiot
12-02-2006, 20:15
wow incredible *cough* Dwarf *cough*, love the base as well, but get a move on with the dwarves! They are looking magnificent so far, don't stop now.:)

12-02-2006, 20:16
Terrible photos ;), but the Chaplain looks amazing, especially the lava flow! What did you use, ACTUAL LAVA?!

13-02-2006, 03:55
Wow, simply wow. Jim your artistic skill is something I wish I had! keep it up lad!

Jim Reaper
13-02-2006, 17:13
Fear not Dwarf fans! The next batch of Hammerers is on its way, this time they're being painted in groups of 3 (for complicated reasons involving Beards).

14-02-2006, 08:17
Really loving this thread so far Mr Reaper. Gives me a bit of motivation to actualy finish something i start!!! The Lava on the SM Termie Chaplain looks really good, wanna share the secret of your success? (you can PM if you dont want to bung your dwarf thread up with lava modelling techniques!).

The Dwarfs are looking really good though, I especially like the hammerers as the old style hammerer minis never really did it for me. The lord also looks really good, as do the quarrelers. Only thing is I too think you should go for some kind of base for your cannon, it would just finish it off nicely. I too bought the Bolt Thrower on day of release and have to confess it is one of the best minis in the dwarf range. Look forward to seeing yours painted.

Anyway enough chat.....

*kick* ;)

Jim Reaper
14-02-2006, 18:26
Ha! I care not for adding random tips on lava to my Dwarf thread!

It's really very simple, I just studied some pictures of real lava flows and tried to render them as best I could (specifically this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Lavafall.jpg) one). Actually it turned out a bit dimmer, but I didn't want to overwhelm the model with a bright orange base...

It's basecoated in Scab Red, then mixed up through Blood Red to a round about 70/30 mix of Blazing Orange and Blood Red in a pattern that's supposed to look flow-y, finishing with a few spots of pure Blazing Orange to represent hot-spots in the lava.

Then it's just been given a couple of coats of gloss varnish and it's done!

16-02-2006, 02:20
more Jim more! I COMMAND YOU!

Jim Reaper
17-02-2006, 16:42
Making progress, ever so sloooow progress, but progress nonetheless. Blimey I said "progress" a lot there. Progress progress progress.

Anyway. Got another batch of Hammerers done, this lot aren't too interesting so no photos, but the next bunch include the standard bearer so I'll put a regiment WIP up once they're done.

17-02-2006, 17:05
Very very nice! This is really tempting me to start some stunties, I really like the Lord on shield conversion.

Also it's good to see a WH thread in this section, too many boring threads about magnets and marines, yawn.

The Judge
19-02-2006, 12:39
Dammir I'm trying to resist the stunties.

Beautiful stuff.

Jim Reaper
19-02-2006, 17:42
More than halfway there now on the Hammerers, here's a couple of (camera shaky) WIPs complete with Mr Shieldy In Charge Guy. Not very good pictures I'm afraid - my camera was swiftly running out of batteries (again) so I didn't have much time - should get some better ones once the regiment is complete.

19-02-2006, 17:56
Lookin' good!

I like the way the standard bearer's position balances out the fact that the Lord isn't in the centre of the unit.

Keep 'em coming!

Jim Reaper
22-02-2006, 20:49
I do apologise for the lack of updates of late, the Real World has been biting me on the **** again (specifically, I'm a postgrad student with a important project presentation coming up in a few weeks).

I've made some keys for the Gate Keeper's (Hammerer Champion) key ring out of fiddly wire and green stuff, sadly my camera is playing up AGAIN so pics will have to wait.

24-02-2006, 06:49
No worries Jim :) Looking forward to it as always!

Jim Reaper
05-03-2006, 13:33
What's this Jim? An update? SURELY NOT.

I'm afraid so, the Hammerers are finally finished and here's a picture to prove it.

I'm about halfway through a character model (the thane from the army box) now, he should be up in a day or two.

My presentation thingy is now a week on Friday, hopefully after that I'll be able to pick up the pace again.

Lady Hope
05-03-2006, 15:20
Wow, it's all I can say. Those are some amazing dwarves. You made me want to paint some too :) Great colour scheme and really neat painting. Keep up the wonderful work!

05-03-2006, 15:22
Hoorah! More pictures!

Them's some good dwarfs. Looks liket he keyring turned out pretty well in the end, any chance of a close up?

06-03-2006, 00:14
Yet another pretty unit, Reap. Well done.

Jim Reaper
06-03-2006, 17:19
What is this? Two updates in as many days? The world is turned upside down!

Anyhoo, here's my finished Thane.

Next up is the Bolt Thrower, which I've been looking forward to as it's such a nice model.

Cheers for all the encouragement and comments guys :)

EDIT: Removed a picture as for some reason it loaded up really big despite being the same size pixels-wise as the other one. Sometimes I just don't understand the interweb...

06-03-2006, 17:24
Thanealicious. I really like the warm look to the colours there.

Jim Reaper
14-03-2006, 15:02
Time for more updateage - this time it's the bolt thrower (sadly the miniature representation of the war machine, and not the Games Workshop Band).

This is a really really nice model, especially the pointing crewman - he's got some very nice rolled up sleeves going on. If it weren't for the jawdropping goodness of the SM Terminator Chaplain, it might be my new favourite.

14-03-2006, 15:16
Ah, that is a fine model. And a very nice paintjob too!

What's up next?

Jim Reaper
15-07-2006, 15:47

I'm back! After a long hiatus painting Space Marines, working, researching, sitting around, and generally not painting Dwarfs, I've got back into the groove and made a start on my Thunderers, including one of my very few slightly converted models (the Veteran has a bit of green stuff hair).

I've foolishly lent out my camera's USB cable at the mo so I'm afraid for the time being I can only put up a picture from my phone camera. Still, better than nothing and I've taken some proper pictures that I'll put up as soon as I get my cable back.

15-07-2006, 15:51
Nice to see you're back... :)

What greenstuffing did you do on the guys hair? Will we have to wait for a proper photo to see it?

24-07-2006, 05:11
I love watching the progress of your army. It looks fantastic! Keep up the good work, those dwarves deserve it!
