View Full Version : For Daemonhood or Damnation!

Hi all. After reading through so many awesome PLogs thought I’d have a crack at it myself. Hope it can be even a fraction close to some of the others I’ve seen on here which have been really fun to follow and great for inspiration.

I began collecting WoC (HoC at the time) about 3 years ago but that only lasted about a year before I lost interest. Now, after a couple of years break, I thought I’d try and get back into the hobby and started off by finishing the models I had left over from my previous collection, the few that I could find anyway .
This only consisted of a unit of 11 warriors, a unit of HORRIFICALLY painted marauders and some equally bad “hero” type models.

So after a recoat of the warriors I started getting stuck in (sorry for the poor pictures):
^Front rank, haven't included the standard as its not finished and covers alot of the models.
^Rear rank, weapons are gonna be used as halberds/great weapons. Will probs count this unit as Undivided Chosen.

I think these guys turned out ok for the most part. A few poor attempts at giving them “cool” weapons but will only get better, I hope, through trial and error. The bases are still WIP but they depend on what i have avaliable to base all 2000+ points (when the armies finished).

C&C welcomed and needed.

Looking great so far mate! Glad you decided to share your project with us. Wish I could see a bit more detail on the pics. Makes it hard to see and comment. Maybe some close-ups? But from a distance (hehe) they look sweet! I especialy like how you did not do a uniform shield and weapon on all the troops. i.e. some have round shields and others the broad shield. The weapons look good too. Flails and GW is awsome. Personally I think flails are some of the coolest looking weapons. Undivided Chosen sounds great! Keep going! Cannot wait for your next update!:D

21-10-2009, 08:49
They're looking really cool! I like the wyrdstone effect on the weapons, as well as those little conversions you've done. Nice work!

Glad to see you have your own plog up now! :)
It looks like a really cool, chaotic unit, as npow said there's no uniformity to the shields and weapons etc which is chaos in its purest form!
Like Monsterzonk I especially like the wyrdstone effect. Looks really cool. I love the flail conversions in particular. Flails are such awesome looking weapons and fit very well with the character of chaos. I find it an anomaly that Warriors can't actually be equipped with flails. Still I fancy doing a unit with flails to count as great weapons and will definitely use your minis there as a source of inspiration!

21-10-2009, 14:31
Cheers for the comments people.

Wish I could see a bit more detail on the pics.
cheers for pointing it out, have updated the pics to a larger res. Hopefully has sorted it.

I like the wyrdstone effect on the weapons Cheers guys, most of the bits were stolen from my bros skaven battallion (think the Plague monks such and awesome kit).

I find it an anomaly that Warriors can't actually be equipped with flails Yeah is a shame but then they are supposed to be disaplined warriors and flails are kinda...erratic (?), but they do fine for GWs.

So thought I’d invest in some knights as they seem to be the favourite amongst the WoC crowd atm and the new (to me) plastic kit is just fantastic. So a couple of WIP pictures of the horses, forgot to take pictures of the knights but I’m not really happy with them so probs more work needed, in time for next months ToFP I hope.

All 5 horses will be similar to this (seriously bad picture thanks to masses of sunshine<--complaint about the reflection not the sunshine itself , seldom have enough of it):

Will Hopefully get a picture of some of the riders up sometime this week. Will also have a picture of my Sorcerer w/Book and Staff converted (basic weapon swap) from a Knight.

C&C welcomed and needed.

21-10-2009, 14:44
Hey buddy! Thos knights are looking prime to worship Nurgle with the green! Is that your intention? Also upping the res on the warriors really helped! They look awesome. What was your inspiration in useing red, blue, and green colors on the shields and weapons? Little touch of the gods? Khorne, Tzeetch, Nurgle? Cannot wait to see the knights! Cheers mate!:D

21-10-2009, 19:32
Uh oh, a double post.

The warriors don't really have a reason for their multi-colouredness. Just wanted to mess about with different colours and see what works where etc.

Thought I’d show you the wizard I made a little while ago just from “spare” Knights bits and some more Skaven stuff. Also a couple of pictures of a test scheme for my Nurgle warriors with the 1st base! Not sure i will do them anything like that though.

A couple of pictures of my wizard:

The test warrior, needs a coat of matte varnish on the fur trim and hammer head & haft:

That’s all, for now, folks. Please let me know what you think needs doing to it.

<EDIT> Should be fixed now cheers Jiggy :).

21-10-2009, 19:36
Are the wizard pics working?:S
I don't see anything.

21-10-2009, 19:55
Looking good! I really like the colour combination on those warhorses and on the Sorcerer! And the base on the Warrior looks just great!

Monsterzonk :skull:

21-10-2009, 20:13
Ok I can see him :)
Good job I really like those horses!

21-10-2009, 20:24
Wizard looks great! Love how you have those conversions which work very well for chaos. Your color mix on him is also great. Look forward to more!
I like the warrior and the base looks awesome! Could use some more shadowing on the armor and chainmail. But you also said you were not going to go with it anyways. Great weapon looks great! Keep it up mate!

21-10-2009, 22:10
Really like that wizard and the latest warrior is ace!

23-10-2009, 23:36
Cheers for the encouragement guys, wasn't much for painting last couple of days.
The warrior had no form of shading or even a wash on him, was literally painted in about 10-15 mins as a rough scheme. on't really like it though so am probs gonna do summin more like the Knights horse's barding.

Right, so I got 75% of the way through the knights and was bored so made another purchase, a unit of marauder horsemen.
These guys seem to be the staple to any half decent WoC army and have so many uses I thought it’d be stupid not to get some. As with so many of the recently released kits GW is producing this one was not a let down at all, really nice sculpts, huge array of weapons to choose from and not particularly bad mould lines is a great kit imo. Not really a fan of the pre moulded left shoulder though which restricts the position of the left arm, but could be worse.

Well here they are assembled with some minor “cutz” (not a fan of conversion when its something so small so I’m gonna call it…“cutz”):
2nd guy, in from left, might get a mini standard or hold an axe of some kind.

Plan for the weekend: Get messed up drunk Saturday night, possibly paint (res of the knights) during the day. Sunday...cry about being hung over, paint 1 guy (probs an exalted of some kind or a marauder horseman) then cry about feeling sick and come and read some andom plogs on warseer. Fun times!

Well firstly, the sorcerer looks great, I especially love the freehand you've done on the book, looks brilliant. I really love the warpstone effects you're using like on the sorcerer's staff.
The Marauder Horsemen are, like you say, great minis and there are some awesome heads in there, be sure to keep them for when you come to your marauders on foot! :) Sounds like a good weekend plan, enjoy! :D

03-11-2009, 13:36
Riders look great mate! Your "cutz" are brilliant! Keep it coming. Looking forward to am update soon. Get your gs yet?

03-11-2009, 13:57
Right so have been slightly lazy on the painting front recently, but now have an update. Yay!

Have almost finished the Knights, Woot. No work of much import on the horsemen:, they are undercoated though!

Group shot (Only about 75% done need some final highlights and some touching up):

Some closer shots (and no I still haven't worked out how to use a camera well:():

Gone for a tarnished copper look on the armour (stolen from whitewookie ), think it turned out alright for them most part. As u can see need to do: the boots, which were brown but didn't like: the weapons, no real clue for these so advice would be much apreciated: the horns/helmets and some general tidying.

Almost finished assembling the first couple of ranks of the Nurgle warriors, they have a few “cutz” to make them more Nurgley: Single horns in the middle of the helmets, and will have some nurgle symbols scattered throughout. They are armed with halberds and I am converting them all, yeah I’m that cheap, so is gonna take a while. Still waiting on my GS to arrive so haven’t been able to give them heads or undercoat them, oh well.

C&C please guys. Ty,

03-11-2009, 14:39
H2O! Love it mate! The knights look ace! The armor is great. Maybe a wash to make it a bit darker? and then highlight the edges? Just my thoughts. I think the pooled green looks great in the recesses. Awesome how you differentiated your riders armor from the horses barding. Draws the eye away from the horse and to the riders. Great job. The reddish orange horns could use something, but not sure what. I love the color scheme though. Very original! As far as weapons go, I found that using chainmail and generous washes of badab black to make an effective nurgle weapon. But that may be going against what your thinking on the knights. Oooo how about some putrid green colored weapons? Just throwing out some ideas for you. :D All the same brilliant and looking forward to the nurgle warriors!!

03-11-2009, 15:28
Looking great so far! I really like the colour scheme of those Knights. Looking forward to seeing them finished!

Monsterzonk :skull:

03-11-2009, 20:55
I really, really like the colour scheme you have going. Musch different than the usual-ish blacks and metals.

04-11-2009, 23:35
Cheers for the comments guys.

@Pow: The knights aren't as bright as they appear the lightig=ng made them appear a lot brighter but might use a different orange/brown colour next time for a darker feel. The red also isn't as pinkish as it looks lighting again. they could use something though not sure what either. Cheers for the weapon help.

@Zonk: Cheers buddy. You and me both.

@GT: Thanks mate, they are nurgley so have gone for the greeny paint scheme, the red is just cause is just cause i wanted some brighter stuff on them.

So made a pretty big mistake today...decided to read through that CD magazine on the Warseer homepage, Oops:(

Chaos dwarves look so good and every unit has to be scratch built which would be really satisfying, and tedious but meh. Anyway to get my mind off them i decided to read something else (second big mistake) have now spent 3 hours on www.coolminiornot.com which is the most addictively awesome site ever.
Did find a pretty sweet blending tutorial on there though and works well on large surfaces.

Might hae a WIP of my first proper trial at wet blending up sometime tomorrow.

05-11-2009, 13:38
It is true that pictures never do anything justice....darn lighting. Chaos dwarfs would be my top choice for another army. When I got into the hobby they were just going out. I managed to pick up a few models (heros, sorcerer, centaur, earthshaker) before they were gone. Fun models and I support the TALL hats! :D Bring them back Fantasy Forge World!
The coolminiornot website is awesome! I have got so much inspiration from that site! I have some great pics I think you would like of Nurgle stuff of course. Let me know if you want me to send them to you! Later bruv!

05-11-2009, 15:39
Yeah for sure send me the links if u don't mind. Need some inspiration for a BSB i am painting up. He looks pretty good atm, am doing the horse and rider together so they should look like a pair once finished.

Will try and post photos in a bit if i can find the camera,

Elazar The Glorified
05-11-2009, 16:15
That's a pretty cool colour scheme. The Knights are looking good so far. Keen to see them finished.
What mini are you using for your BSB?

07-11-2009, 22:39
Cheers guys.

@Elazar: you and me both on the knights, keep finding things to paint/glue/read just to avoid doing them . Just a knight with a diff head but am taking my time on him so hopefully he'll stand out.

@Pow:eah the CDs are sweet but sometime in the never i fear. Those pictures you sent me are sweet, think i'm going to try my hand a something like the slug/worm mount of that amazing BSB. Hope it looks even 1/4 as good.

So I haven't been able to use the camera still but with a good excuse. My mum's dog just gave birth to 8 lil puppies, so hard to try and be a bloke with tiny cute things yapping and looking insanely cute just downstairs.

^My sister holding one, cute huh?
A little group shot, really bad picture/lighting cause the mum didn't like the flash going off.

Hopefully can use the camera for a bit tomorrow, with adequat light.

09-11-2009, 13:40
Cute little buggers! I could see how that would be distracting.

09-11-2009, 14:29
Cool doggies! But keep your distance once they start growing horns and develop a hunger for man-flesh... ;)

12-11-2009, 14:44
Not being able to use the camera has made me lose interest a little bit, which s a blessing in disguise as it allowed me to do some written work. Fun never stops.

Did however recieve my GS the other day so have been keeping busy with that. When the options are there to convert chaos is the most time consuming army ever. "I could give that guy a cool tentical and wierd tounge." So i have then decided the whole unit should have no helmet and a crazy tounge, oops. Not going to do that now though cause i like the middle horn look for nurgle warriors.

So got to use the camera today. A nice overcast day to shoot some pictures, yay for extremly poor lighting and I guess a shakey hand cause some pictures are really blurry. Here we go anyway:

A lord/BSB depending on what arms i give him cause have some left from my beastmen and marauders:
Tried to give him a hood and neck protector type thing, suggestions welcome for improving/removing. (the scratchy look on the front is just some filing of some, amature hour, finger prints)

A hero/sorcerer again depending on what arms he gets:
This guy has a kinda hooded cape which the pictures don't really show. His arms will be in the air thats why the cape is so off the body.

A "palanquin" for the second guy to have, cause think they are sweet fluffwise not amazing in the game though:
This is still really WIP but think it shows the general idea. 1st time i tried to sculpt a spawn like guy (was a bit small in the end) and nurglings.

Have done the bare minimum of painting but might put some up later and some WIP of the warriors.

C&C welcome. Cheers,

12-11-2009, 17:32
YAY!! GS finally arrived!! Just to get the comments going:
The lord/bsb, I love the helm and the hood! Looks ace. The belly is great and I really like how you are giving the entire upper torso a go for sculpting. My only comment is the chest...they look a bit like female boobs. It could just be the picture as well so please don’t be offended. Monsterzonk gave me some good advice on making the sculpt anatomically correct. So if it is a guy, I would suggest adding fat rolls to the side to even him out a bit.

The hero/sorcerer looks great and I really like the armor on the legs and also the hooded cape on the back. Maybe make the cape longer in the back? The arms in the air will look ace as well. The best part is the stomach which looks great! Is that a tongue coming out of the middle? Love it! What legs did you use on him? Look like old WoC legs.

The palanquin looks great thus far and I look forward to seeing more on this! I could not agree with you more that fluff wise these rock and I want one in my army as well! To make sure I am seeing this right, the giant grey/black mass under is the spawn? Did you use gs to sculpt him? Also, the shields added to get the icon is awesome! I like the idea of a hero/sorcerer standing atop a palanquin more than sitting (epidemis??spelling).

Look forward to seeing more and the warriors!!!! Great stuff!

Elazar The Glorified
14-11-2009, 13:49
Some very promising looking GS work. I'm pretty poor with the use of GS so can't offer any real advice on it but I'm impressed by the start on the palanquin, already looking suitably putrid and Nurgly :)

14-11-2009, 14:21
Nice GS job on the cloth, it looks very natural.

15-11-2009, 17:28
Cheers guys.

So haven't done that much more on the knights, bsb. Or any GSing on the Sorc guy, or palanquin. Have tried to fit the "boobs" on the lord/hero guy a bit cause I did agree with npow about them looking more breast than moob.
Did do some filling and construction of the warriors, which i forgot to photo before priming but oh well. Also tried to make a sweet helm from the HoC book, was alot harder than i thought it'd be. Anyway end of ramble...

The hero dude with, hopefully, sorted breast issues:

The warriors, only some new weapons (should look halberd-sih):

The helmet trial sculpt and the basis artwork:

Need some honest outsider opinions. Cheers,

15-11-2009, 17:51
Great Green Stuff work! Looking forward to seeing this develop! ;)

Monsterzonk :skull:

16-11-2009, 02:49
WOW bruv! That helmet looks insane!!!! I am going to snipe that idea for sure? Few questions...where did you get that picture and how did you achieve those tiny spikes?

16-11-2009, 12:46
Is the Lord going to be bare-chested? One alternative is to make his torso essentially be a big Mark of Nurgle, with his boobs pecs being two of the three circles and the third be just below them.

Liking the scratch-built head, but I think you might have some problems when it comes to painting it as some of the detailing looks very subtle. Maybe use a thin drill bit and drill out the eye holes more.

Halberd on the guy on the right just great. I'd consider lengthening the hafts on the other guy's weapons as I didn't see them at first.

Good luck! :)

16-11-2009, 17:42
Cheers for the comments guys.

@Pow: Have no probs with u using it as a basis, just make sure urs is better cause think I could've done better but don't want to resculpt another, or 2 in the same army as then it'll be less unique.
The spikes are the tips of thin rolls of GS, left to dry then cut off and super glued on (I used a SG gel for it as it needs less support than my normal liquid SG). Picture is from the heroes section of the Hordes of chaos book page...58.

@Avain cheers bud, yeah agree on the halberds needing to be lengthened, might do it to these or just stick them in a back rank and do it to the next batch .

Work is kinda taking over atm but the knights are almost finished for this months ToFP but my BSB has not seen a brush in ages, GS distracted me:p.

23-11-2009, 18:10
Hey mate! Long time since an update. How are those warriors coming along? Cannot wait to see more. Also, are you using that hemet for the champ?

23-11-2009, 19:58
Hey dude unit is coming along alright:

Finished the boots (aren't that shiney) and cape (isn't that orange IRL and has highlights, etc)

The armour itself is about 90% done (on the legs, knees, shoulder and elbow bits) the chest areas are only in the 2nd (of 5~) stages. Also looks really shieny and really contrasted but isn't in the "flesh". Got a friend from my LGS to give me a bit of hands on advice about wet blending on the model and on a palette, which made the tutorials I read online way more simple to understand.

Hope you like,

p.s @npow: Saw that you asked elazar about a "wet palette". Thought this'd (http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4776) help. I found that a dish cloth worked a little better (folded twice so its about 2"x2" and 1/2" thick).

23-11-2009, 20:03
Really cool chaos. They're looking great. Keep up the good work!:)

Elazar The Glorified
23-11-2009, 20:03
The look to be coming along very well H20. Looking forward to seeing how these turn out. Reassuring to see it isn't just my pictures that the highlights get washed out on sometimes! ;)
As for wet palettes. If you have a look at Roman's tutorial (http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2009/10/tutorial-wet-palette.html) as well on how to build one here (http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2009/10/tutorial-wet-palette.html) it's a slightly different method but it's worked very well for me.

23-11-2009, 20:13
Fantastic Mate! I contemplated doing orange cloaks as well as I think the color is very nurgle with greens and browns. So kudos on the idea! Cheers on the wet blending tutorial! Did you use this on the entire model? For shading? Highlighting? Etc.? Really have not utilized blending techniques in my painting. So would be nice to learn.

24-11-2009, 22:40
Cheers for the comments people.

Need your help/advice as I've kinda hit a brick wall. I can't decide on the fur colour for the cloaks. I was thinking rotting flesh with some light green washes and white+rotting highlights. I also though bleached bone with flesh wash (a couple of really thin washes) then highlight and do a really thinned wash of dark green ink.
The chest details, the arrows mainly, and head are going to be a snot+goblin green kinda colour if that helps.

Thanks for the wet palette stuff Elazar, still to have my paints dry out since last night:)
This is a pretty good tutorial npow (http://www.coolminiornot.com/go.php/go/articlephp/aid/58?).

Bring on the suggestions! Please,

24-11-2009, 23:58
When I was planning on doing orange cloaks I was going to follow the same theme i have on my warriors of rot. Black base, dry brush scorched brown and highlight in graveyard earth, with a wash of delvun mud. I think that would look great,. but I would also be interested in seeing the rotting flesh idea!

03-12-2009, 20:42
Thought I'd just throw my pics of the knights I've done, shy 1 guy due to huge foot of doom incident. They are already in the ToFP thread but needs to be here also.

So after the guy that needs to be completely redone/rebuilt they are finished.

Next on the books is finishing up the warriors I started a little while ago, after those 5 I'm not sure if I will paint the rest of the unit or I will just focus on the horsemen I have built and primed. I have started building a couple of characters, a unit or flagellants (marauders) with GWs and a couple of spawn which might be used as spawns (does it have an s in the plural?) or one as a "steed" for my BSBs chariot.

Well I'm easily distracted so doubt much will be completed for a while yet.

03-12-2009, 20:57
AHHHHHH not the foot of doom! That would be a downer. These look great though! Plan on finishing the horns on the two? Cannot wait to see the warriors and characters you have been working on.

07-12-2009, 13:08
Have some more WIP shots of my warriors, annoyingly I can either take a really dark photo thats shows basically a black silhouette or a lighted one that washes everything out/makes it seem 10x brighter than IRL, meh it happens. Anyway photos:

(Only this pic came out alright, but think its fine as only a WIP shot)

Here are some WIP shots of a dude i decided to make after my brother said the helmet (http://cdn2.ioffer.com/img/item/118/961/891/u3cD.jpg) looked knda like the one from Gladiator (http://i41.tinypic.com/6gj7l2.jpg). Is probs going to hold a standard or have a low slung shield arm and ride a chariot.

07-12-2009, 13:29
These look really good mate! Any chance we could get a shot of the back of the cloaks? I really like your soon to be chariot rider. He looks awesome. That is a beastman torso right? The weapons looks great! What did you use to make that arm armor?

Elazar The Glorified
07-12-2009, 19:03
I'm ignoring your Knights H20 because I'm going to comment on them in the ToFP thread when I get to it... ;)
The WIP Warriors look promising but my attention is entirely focussed on that charioteer you're working on. He's looking brilliant so far! The pose is absolutely legendary and your green stuff skills seem to be really good as the details you're adding with it are coming out really well. Makes me very jealous as I just generally make a mess with greenstuff :( Looking forward to seeing more on this guy. Do you have any plans for the chariot, are you going to go with the metal chaos one? I'm working on building two chariots at the minute so I'm quite curious to see what you have planned :D

15-12-2009, 15:18
Cheers guys. My greenstuffing "skills" are more "Damn. Damn. Damn...ooo wait that works." Just this BSB dude is a kitbash really, but ta very much all the same:).

Did a little more work on my BSB chariot guy, made him a base that I hope makes him stand out without being OTT. The base is going to hopefully going to be part of a larger scene I want to creat with a BSB/exalted/wizard from each of the gods all standing round looking important, is very much a "one day," sort of idea.

Also been painting some horsemen, they are kind of a quick "batch" paint not spent masses of time on the but have tried some new things with the metals, and have tried to keep my palette reasonably limited. They are pretty much done (like ~80%), have enjoyed painting them for the most part which is a bit wierd as I usually hate painting cav models.

Not glued yet as its just easier to finish them individually. (The dude on the left, of the picture, kept losing his flail head so just used to hourglass for a quick and lazy solution.)

Sorry for the bad photos but haven't had any sunny days, english winter funfun, and had to use an artifical light.

C&C welcome. Cheers,

Fenix Felder
15-12-2009, 17:30
that bsb looks great im eager to see it painted!

15-12-2009, 17:45
Cheers for the update mate! Still wondering how you did the shoulder armor on your BSB though???? He looks fantastic. I really like the base and am excited to see the finished result. How did you achieve the rock build-up on the base? The riders and mounts are looking ace. The armor on the them looks really good. Especially on the mounts. What god are you going for here? Slaanesh?

Keep it coming mate!

15-12-2009, 21:30
@Felix: Thanks a lot dude, is going to take ages cause I want to make it a focal point of sorts.

Thought I'd answer quick as my updates are few and far between. The horsemen are going to be MoS, just best choice for them whilst still being cheap, but don't want them to be really god specific cause sometimes they'll be vanilla.
The rock thing is just made from cork expansion strips (http://www.realoakfloors.co.uk/media/690_Cork_Expansion_Strips.jpg) that I had left over after laying some wooden flooring. Just got it from B&Q (a hardware store) a while ago.
The shoulder armour is just from a "squished" straw, I used a narrow-ish straw cause required less cutting down but I guess any would do. Was really hard to attatch cause SG refused to stick it securely, so I just put a layer of GS along where I wanted the armour to be, leave it for a little while then slot the pieces in at 90° to the model them pushed it down into the right sort of angle. Isn't hard to do but haden't seen it b4, sure its out there though, so had to guess for the most part.

Might be priming tomorrow cause have made up some marauders on foot, flaggies with GWs, and a wraith, wanted to try "ghost" painting.

Elazar The Glorified
15-12-2009, 21:38
That BSB keeps getting better and better. Not sure I've seen the armour done with a straw before but it certainly works. I used card from one of the GW regiment boxes to do the Tassets (thigh armour) on my Steed of Slaanesh rider but never thought of cutting a straw. Would have gotten the rounded shape I wanted much easier! Will be keeping that in mind! I just bought some cork for basing myself too. Glad to see it looks good!
The Marauder Horsemen look really good so far. Mark of Slaanesh for the win! ;)
