View Full Version : Old Rats (Start of a Skaven plog)

22-10-2009, 17:19
I'm starting Skaven, and went sniffing in my old boxes. Here i found these 2 guys, hiding like the cowards they are.

An old 4th ed. Warlock, which I am going to use as a Gray seer or a Plague Priest.

Finished, except for the base:

I also found Mr. verminlord. Unfortunatly, he had lost his head somewhere along the way. So I pinned a head from an old metal Chaos Warhound on him, and thought with some green stuff and the addition of a couple of horns, he actually could make himself useful. What do you think? Too non-ratty?

I think that your Vermin Lord will be ratty enough if you add the horns, bulk up his front teeth and perhaps add a lump of warpstone somewhere. Of course don't forget his tail!

A nice and tidy paint job on the Skaven seer, will you be doing your new army in the same style?

Nice, I have that warlock myself, I think it works well as a BSB.
It seems you missed a part on his shoulder cover (whatever to call it, the beige cloth). The triangle in the middle should be part of it as well.

I like the green horned head on the staff. :)

Hm, this will prove interesting. :)

One can hear that Warlock hissing, it's so well sculpted. Oddball direction for your Verminlord - any horns planned for it? I think those abit older Skaven models would go well along with the upcoming 7th ed. plastics.

I'm actually hoping to win an Ebay auction lot that includes that particular oop Warlock model, and after seeing the paint job you've given him, I'm REALLY hoping to win that auction now. I agree with mrtn, he could very well make an excellent BSB, which is something I hadn't thought of before seeing mrtn's suggestion. I think if I did that, I'd try and gussy up his staff somehow, and make it a little more standard like. In fact, I think that's likely what I'll do.

The older Skaven sculpts are some of the best(or at least my favorite) models ever done, and so I plan on having at least a few of them mixed in with my own forces.

Your stuff is looking great, and that Verminlord has potential! I look forward to seeing where this project goes. Well done!

I love what your doing with the Vermin Lord. Personally the only part of the Vermin Lord i dislike is his head. Great paint job on that Warlock too!

love that warlock (makes me with I owned one)

I hope to see more of your stuff

Conidering your painting skills, I`m sure you`ll make the VL look good. The warlock is definately looking great:)

Thank you all! Good news (or bad, depends on taste), I found the Verminlord's head. So I guess I will make him original instead of the warhound head. Or should I?? You decide. :)

If you want it as a skaven model use the original head. If it's just a big daemon, use the dog.

Skaven have had consistently good metal miniatures throughout GW history IMO. Nice to see someone making a good job on an old model.

I think the original VL head is fantastic so that would get my vote. If you wanted any inspiration, GW has repainted their VL model ready for the re-release: here (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1300195&prodId=prod1140208).

Use the original.

And I think I've got that Warlock somewhere too, you really did it justice.

As I said I found the original head, but not the tail. This is still very much WIP, thought I'd just show some progress. Anyone recognize his new tail? :D

be'lakor tail? and why does the vermin lord have hoofs?

because he's a daemon prince... :P

Have been starting on my slaves, so I thought I'd share my painting scheme for my army. Going for abit limited palette with blue and dirty off-white.

C & C are appreciated. :)

I slammed some bits together and *poof*, a BSB and a Warlord on War Litter. Now my Warlord can ride quick-quick to battle in style!

My BSB striking a pose:

The War Litter

I love the war litter, it is very similar to what I plan to do. I even have the same Orc Chariot sides sitting on my desk ready to start! I look forward to seeing you get this bad boy painted up.

As for your BSB, unless that is the strongest Skaven in the world I am not sure he could hold that banner from so low down, I think he should either have his hand higher up the banner pole or extend the pole down to reach the ground.

That said, I think it is a nice model and I am sure you will make it look great when painted.

Finally back in the painting saddle again. Finished (well, still details left, whips ect) a unit of Giant Rats last night. For the bases I'm aiming for a "rats in the dusk/moonlight"-kind of look. The blitz+light makes the bases appear more blue than they are, and the grass is also lighter on the pics. But hopefully you get the idea. :)

Love the character conversions, looking forward to seeing them painted up

I can't say I am a fan of the bases, but I do like the darkness and paint scheme of your skaven. The metalic bits are great! Can't wait to see how you apply the paint scheme to some rat ogres.
cheers, Bard
