Hello everyone and thanks for stopping by!

The purpose of this log is to chronicle my High Elf army, which I aim to finally get painted to a good standard.
I had some issues with deciding on what colour scheme I should use. I don't like the official blue one, and my old ones were red so I didn't want to do that again. In the end I settled with a white and grey scheme which I feel is very elven, and at least I haven't seen it before.

Some pictures of my noble, Cyriel.

My mage Mormicar

And finally all the painted models. The chariot is based now, but I don't have a good camera until tomorrow, but I'll post some pictures of it then.

Good start thus far! I'm digging the dirtier metallics than what is typically displayed on High Elves.

Thanks for the comment ManusMarines!
I like the dirtier metals as well, and it makes sense that when they are out in the field they don't have the time to clean their armour at least three times a day;)

I'm working on the swordmasters right now, and hopefully there will be some pictures up later today.

Some new pictures of the swordmasters that I have finished, and some WIPs for the rest of the unit. There's also a couple of pictures on the based chariot. Enjoy!

Nice work there, I like the name of your thread, Ray bradbury is one of my favorite authors.

The chariot is one of my personal favorites, from your work although they all good.

Desert Rain
28-10-2009, 19:34
Thanks for the comments guys!

EdFireborn: I agree, and without the gold I believe that they would look very dull.

Chaos Puppy: Nice that you like the chariot, a lot of work went into it so it's nice that somebody likes it. BTW I've never read anything by Ray Bradbury, the name of the title was inspired from Shakespeare's Macbeth play.

The swordmasters are completed now, and hopefully I can post some pictures of them tomorrow. The next project is a bolt thrower and some dragon princes that I'm converting from silver helms, and I'm using green stuff for the first time ever to make some cloaks for them. I will also try to make some new tails for their horses since I don't like the original.

There's some lovely painting on these. The gems on the Swordmasters really stand out to me and the chariot looks great. An impressive start to an army, looking forward to more :)

Great start to your high elves. Your chariot is superb. Blues gems HEs same as me :)

I see on your list you've started your dragon princes, i'm looking forward to seeing those

Thanks for the comments Elazar and Nuada!

I've taken some pictures of the finished swordmasters now, personally I like them a lot and naturally I hope that you like them as well.
I'm working on a bolt thrower now, and if everything goes according to the plan it should be finished this weekend or early next week. The Dragon Prince conversions will take some more time but hopefully they will be done within the next couple of weeks.

Finally some swordmaster pics for you all:

I would like it if you put up some more photos. I will probably be starting a High Elf army within the next month, and I'm looking for an colour scheme. So far it looks great on Swordmasters the Chariot and the two characters.

Thanks for the comment ;)
I haven't been painting anything for the past 2 months, real world issues (stupid exams) and a general lack of interest has prevented me. I can upload some more pics of stuff that's already painted later.

I've finished the everqueen model, which will be used as an Archmage in the game. I'm almost done with a bolt thrower as well. The Dragon Prince coversions are about half done by now. It's the first time I use green stuff, which is more difficult than it looks but they are coming out just fine. The feeling of having a unit that doesn't look like anyone else's is nice ;)

I will upload some pics of the queen, bolt throwers and the conversions tomorrow.

for some strange reason i always have the idea the swordmasters are carrying big scissors or so....anyway
nice paintjob on them...
ist sad the models look so similar...

i do realy like your chariot though...also cool you made a tyranoc one with an elf shooting on it...you dont see those that much around

Finally some new minis! This time, as mentioned yesterday, it's time for the armchmage and a bolt thrower. The archmage is represented by the Everqueen model which is my favourite GW mini. The model is really great to paint as well.

The bolt thrower is almost directly from the kit but due to an accident involving heavy objects and gravity I had to replace a smashed head with a new one from the spearmen sprue, see it as an extreamly minor conversion ;)

Next on the line for painting is a unit of 10 archers which I've already started painting. I won't be using the current models, instead I'll use the old plastic ones from 5th (I think) edition since I like them better. After the archers I will paint the converted Dragon Princes.

Breazer: Yeah I agree, they could use some variety really. I thought the bow looked better since the spear is just pointing outwards and looks a bit awkward. Thanks a lot for the comment, and I think I have an idea on the scissor part...

Well on to the pictures then!

Nice army, I've been interested for a while to see some one tackle the silverhelm to dragon prince (or elite silverhelm) conversion. Any more plans to elite-ify them? I know gems are easy to do with greenstuff, you could smack a few extras on them. Also cool opeth quote.

Desert Rain
02-02-2010, 13:31
I've seen some of silver helm -> dragon princes before, but they all try to make the helms look like princes, with dragon wings on their helmets and so on. I don't have any more plans for them currently, maybe I'll come up with something when I'm finished with all the cloaks and the horse's tails. I was thinking a bit about giving the horse that they guy with the unicorn helmet a horn so that it looks like a unicorn.

btw, Opeth ftw!

I did some serious painting last night and the archers are now about 50% done. The goal is to have them finished by this weekend so that I can spend the rest of the month working on the dragon princes.

Old school archers!
I have dozens of them lying around so I thought I have to use them for something ;) Plus I think that they look more military than the current ones. To bad that they all look the same though.

Opeth is an amazing band. No idea on what Åkerfelt would play, can't even guess.

I like the grey so I will stick with it. I was a bit uncertain about it looking a bit bland when I started painting the army, but once I got some models finished I decided that I really liked it. The gold helps a lot to not make it dull in my opinion.

I did a little painting yesterday and I will try hard to have the entire archer unit finished this weekend so I can do the Dragon Princes later.

Well things didn't really turn out as planned. I still need to finish the robes on 7 guys, paint 50 gemstones and do some minor things like the arrows in the quiver. But it should be done within this week and the conversions for the DPs should be finished by then as well. So stay tuned an update is on it's way!

In the meantime I'll post some more pics on the newer stuff from last week as well as a WIP of the 3 archers that are almost finished so that you might get an idea on how the unit will look when it's finished.

Alltid trevligt med fler High elves! ;)

Very nice! I especially likes how your noble fits in your SM regiment since you've not given him a shield. I've used the exact same parts for my bsb ;) However I must ask you, are you planning on running your noble in your SM unit? In myexperience SM's are more than capable of taking care of themselves and a noble only bring one extra attack to the unit, something that could easily be covered by a Blade Lord. I personally likes to run a blade lord with the talisman of Loec. Its always good fun to see my opponents fighter hero being cut to pieces by a unit champion!

Desert Rain

Tack för kommentaren :)

The noble will hang out with either the spearmen or the white lions depending on what I'm facing. I too like the talisman on the bladelord just for the surprise effect it usually has on the opponent. Last time I played with that setup he took 3 wounds from a Treeman and the other two models that were left in the unit took the remaining ones. The look on my opponents face was priceless ;)

I love old school high elf archers and the blue gemstones are wonderful.
Thank you :)

Many people seem to like the gems, and I have to admit that this is the first time I've painted them "the real way", in my previous High Elf army they were just painted with mithril silver and a wash of blue ink.

On the painting front I've done the robes for 8 archers and the other 2 will be done tonight. The gems and arrows will most likely be done tomorrow along with the basing and then it will be picture time. The Dragon Prince conversions should be done before the weekend is over.

The archers are finally finished, a week later than promised but here they are! Personally I think that the result came out nicely but it was a bit of a drag to paint with all of the models looking exactly the same. I tried to break up their monotony by applying some selective shading on the robes to make them look a tiny bit different from each other.

The Dragon Prince conversions will be done tomorrow and I will start painting them sometime next week. I'll post a picture of them when they are finished if you want to see them.

Nice HE army you got there.
I think the chariot is very well done, and the gems are really good looking. I find it's hard to leave the right amount of black showing, but without that they just don't look right, so kudos on your gems. :)

TheSanityAssassin
14-02-2010, 04:04
I kind of wish I still had the old archers. Just not a fan of the new ones. I've been using my old Shadow Warrior unit as archers recently.

You have to remember that Åkerfelt also did Bloodbath....maybe Khorne? Depends on the album I think....

Desert Rain
14-02-2010, 10:07
Gargobot: Thank you for your comment :) Leaving enough black is pretty tricky, I try to paint roughly 2/3 of the gem with the base colour, which is Regal Blue.

TheSanityAssassin: I agree with you, the old archers are much better than the new ones, apart from that they look exactly the same. Unless you have the metal ones which have some different poses. Maybe Åkerfelt would do a mixed chaos army then? ;)

I finished the dragon prince conversions yesterday but when I was taking them outside to undercoat them an accident happened and they got a bit smashed, so I'll see if I can repair the damage today. If I can't they will have to wait, or be scrapped all together and I'll paint some Maiden Guards instead.

EDIT: I managed to repair the Dragon Princes and have just undercoated them. I will probably start painting them tomorrow.

Yay another HE thread!
You have a very cool looking archmage there! What model is it?
Btw, your color scheme is very nice too. It's rather dark and not so fancy as other HE schemes, I really like it.
I'm curious about your dragon princes, seems you've got the same idea as I have with them. The sculpted capes look very nice.
Keep it up mate and you've got me subscribed!

Desert Rain
15-02-2010, 19:14
El Aartos: The archmage is the old Everqueen model, which has been out of production for many years now. I'm glad you like the models :)

I took a couple of pictures of the dragon princes which you can see below. In my opinion they turned out OK, and I am really bad at using green stuff so don't expect anything wonderful ;) One of the guys has a unicorn helm instead of a feathered one because I ran out of those feather things. Perhaps I should have done all of them with unicorn helms instead now that I think about it?

I also took a couple of pictures of the new swordmasters compared to how I used to paint them so that you might see what my old army looks like, just for fun.

In the background you can see an Eagle, well actually it's a warhawk but whatever, and some maiden guards which are the next projects after I'm done with the Dragon Princes.

These Helves look really nice in your colour scheme. Waiting to see how the Dragon Helmes (Silver Dragons?) turn out.

I wanted to say a few things about oldschool archers:
1) They indeed still rock despite design coming from 1992
2) Attaching rear rank archers a little closer to the base edge allows smooth ranking up
3) Adding a few bits (a few spearmen feathers in case of shooty fellows below) and little arms repositioning makes them look less cloney

A few photos to give you the idea (sorry for the quality, but my phone can't get any sharper). I hope you won't consider them thread hijacking. ;P

Like everyone before me have said, really nice High Elves. Makes me want to dig out my half finished army and give them a second chance.

The only thing I don't really like is the plumes. Have you tried a stronger colour? I think black would look good and stand out a little more without becoming the focus when looking at them.

El Aartos
21-02-2010, 19:36
Yay updates!
I really like the princes, I assume you'll paint the feathers somewhat flame-like or dragonwing-like? The champ is very cool with the unicorn helmet, it makes me think of the Romans which used to have fancy helmets like that too, really good job (from you then, not the Romans =P).
I wish I could buy the old archers somewhere too, they are way easier to rank up and their heads aren't as butt ugly as the new ones.
Hope to see more stuff soon and keep it up!

Ayliffe:
Yeah I think we all agree that the WoC is Åkerfelt's army ;)

Hakkapelli:
Glad you like them and that I might give you some inspiration :) I haven't tried another colour on the plumes, and I don't think I will either since I like the look of the grey on them.

El Aartos:
Thanks for your comment :) I plan to paint the feathers in a sort of beige colour that will also appear on the eagle that I will paint sometime next month. I think a fiery colour would look odd considering what the rest of the army looks like.

On the painting front, I'm working on the princes right now and I've almost finished the base coats and they should be done by the end of the month. I can post a WIP picture if there is interest.

I really like that! In fact, I thought the first archer you showed was one of the 4th edition metal ones, which have slightly differing poses and feathers. Good job!

They are called Maiden Guards and have been out of production for many years now. I got lucky and managed to get 9 of them plus the everqueen (all unpained and not even cleaned up)for almost nothing on the Swedish version of eBay last September.

You should really try to get your hands of them if you have the chance, though they can be really expensive. I saw 10 of them plus the queen go for over £40 some time ago.
The everqueen model if my favourite GW model ever (I think I've said that a lot of times by now) and I'm really glad to have both her and her maids in my army.

5 Maiden Guards are finished now, but unfortunately I can't take any pictures of them until early next week :(

Then I have to study for an exam and after that a short trip to Stockholm for an Opeth concert \m/ and then I can go back painting again. I predict that the rest of the maids will be done some time in the first half of April or so.

See you in a couple of days with pictures!

Thank you, High Elves is one of those armies that have really good-looking old models. I have a lot of them so there is a fairly large chance of seeing more old ones.

Finally got the camera again so here are a couple of pictures of the finished Maiden Guards. I'll post more pictures of them when the other 4 are done.

The have bows on their backs, you can't see them on these pics, so they work nicely as sea guards. So either that or phoenix guards, possibly spearmen as well. I haven't really decided yet.

Work is continuing on the rest of the maiden guards. At the moment it looks like I might be able to finish both them and the eagle before Tuesday, unless the eagle takes more time to paint than I think it will.

Just to show some progress here's a WIP on the Maiden Guards, please excuse the bad lightning...

They were available in 5th ed, but only if you took the Everqueen to the table. And when I see the paintjob of these, I´m sorry I only bought 14 of them back in the "good-old-days", and painted them poorly...:cries:

Nice HE maiden. And the everqueen marvelous to see her escorted by her guard. I was able to buy also a whole regiment of them (20 in total). Well, the latest pics definitely look better than the ones before. How are you going to play with them since they're not in the 7th ed. anymore.

Thanks for the comments guys

You might notice that the thread's name has been changed. That's because some plans are changed. When I started this log the plan was that I was going to start another army. That won't happen any time soon for several reasons. So therefore this log will be High Elves only, with a few exceptions, and hence the name change.

I've been working on some Ellyrian Reaver conversions and I have a couple of questions for you:
- Does the head that I've used work with the body or is it to big?
- The spears that I have left doesn't fit very well with the models, how do you feel about giving them all swords instead like the musician in the picture below?

Love your colour sceam, fits nicely thoughout the whole army.

The head is fine, without arms to bulk the modle out it does look a little top heavy, but with arms should look ok, I put the double feather on my convershions to fit in with my other old metal ones, not sure about swords, you could get some brass rod and make new spears if the other ones dont look right, unless you are just arming your reavers with bows then the swords might work.

looking forward to seeing more, great work.

For your vampire model I would almost say just an inking to her. Maybe a green or purple color something to give her an otherworldy corpsey feeling about her. It'll had a little depth to the idea and to the model. Otherwise your plog is amazing I cant wait to see more.

Gargobot
07-05-2010, 18:16
The White Lions look very nice, the lion fur is especially well done.

Before you strip the vampire (that sounds kinda wrong :p) I'd try out the color scheme you were going to use on her, so at least you know how that ends up. Maybe if you invest a little more time you'll even discover that stripping isn't necessary at all. Because from the way she looks right now, I don't see anything wrong with her.

Desert Rain
07-05-2010, 18:34
ClockworkCorsair: I don't want her to have that otherworldy feeling, I just want her to be very pale. I know that she turns out kinda flat in the photos, but she looks better in reality.

Ah, you were quite clear I just read that wrong.
But still, why? IIRC the Everqueen looks great... *checking the log* Yup, really nice work!
But in the end the only thing that matters is how you feel about the mini, if you think you could do a better job and are also motivated to actually do it, then do it.
I'd be really interested to see how that turns out. I repainted a model once and the second version (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3601786&postcount=81) looked at least five times better than the first (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3439954&postcount=5).

She is nice, but considering how that vampire is turning out when I try to paint her to the best of my abilities I still feel like I could have done the queen more justice. You are right about the motivation though, but she was a really funny model to paint so I won't have a problem with that ;)
I'll think more about it and if I do it it will probably be during the summer or even autumn. I'm looking forward to the dragon as well:D
I have some problems with the colour scheme though, I want it to stand out from the army, but not to much and it must have the same "feel" as the rest of the army. Any suggestions regarding the dragon are very welcome.

You could keep him in your colour scheme and add a little more blue, like the GW one (http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m490934_99120210011_HighElvesLordDragonMain_873x62 7.jpg) I think the different emphasis on colour distribution would help it stand out without giving it a different feel.
Or since your army is mostly white with blue details, maybe you could just flip that for the Dragon make it blue with white details. Even only blue and some of the harness thingies white, and let the Lord/Wizard tie it in with the rest of the army.
And never underestimate the power of the base. Having the same base will do half the tying in for you.

Desert Rain
08-05-2010, 18:35
Thanks for your suggestion, I'll keep it in mind :)
I was thinking of a sort of blue/green sea colour on it, but I'm not sure.
I've done some searching on the net and found this (http://coolminiornot.com/index/whatc/Fantasy/whatm/GW/id/241250) which i kinda like. It would probably go well with the army since it uses the same colours, but the ones on the dragon are more natural than the ones I use on the robes of the elves.

Hi El, welcome back ;)

I'm trying to restrain myself from painting the dragon (that's bloody hard!) instead of the maiden guards. I have an idea on a colour scheme now and I'd like to hear what you all think about it.

The colour scheme I came up with is brown for the scales and beige for the skin. I got the idea from El Aartos log when he said that he painted his dragon to match his base theme or something like that. Since my bases are sort of brown/beige I thought that perhaps it would be a pretty cool colour scheme.
It would make the rider with his very bright colours stand out quite a bit too.

El Aartos
10-05-2010, 20:18
That sounds like a good scheme. Try to mix a little bit of red into the brown so it doesn't get too brown. Beige for the skin is a good color too. I tried to do it as well but it turned out way darker but I'm happy with it.
I'm curious how it will turn out =D

Desert Rain

Good idea, I think I'm going to use Scorched Brown as the base for brown, and it's a bit red.
The beige is going to be very bright, kinda like the cloaks on the White Lions, but it will get darker the closer you get to the scales.

Basecoat is chaos black, painted with scorched brown, heavy drybrush with graveyard earth, drybrush with bleached bone. The edges are painted with graveyard earth.

I'm glad you like the minis:D

I've been working on some Ellyrian Reaver conversions and I have a couple of questions for you:
- Does the head that I've used work with the body or is it to big?
- The spears that I have left doesn't fit very well with the models, how do you feel about giving them all swords instead like the musician in the picture below?

Sorry for dragging up old posts and I hope I am not to late to help you out with this.

I did a similar conversion but used Archer bodies and heads, I thought that they got across the light armour of a Reaver better than the Spearmen. However if I were to do it again I would probably GS the hair to be longer and more flowing on all or the reavers.

I have a project log with photo's but they are on a different website, if this link here (http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/projects/138467-allonairres-wip-thread.html) is not allowed then mods can delete it.

Hope this helps, I like the models that you are using and am really impressed with the improvements you have made to your painting throughout the course of this thread. Your White Lions and that Necromancer lady look wicked.

And thank you for your comment.

Finally there is an update. The Maiden Guards are done and I am really happy with the unit. I'm once again back into painting and will start on the remaining White Lions today and they have to be finished until a tournament next Saturday so I'll upload pictures before then.

C&C on the models are as always very appreciated!

I need to paint some white lions and spearmen and a chariot first. Then I'll probably do the dragon. I need a legal 8th edition army first.

25-07-2010, 04:05
Wonderful looking army you have here! The use of colours gives the army a coherent and unified look. My only objection is the use of gray. I was looking at your minis and I realised that you have only used "cold" colours (gray, white, blue) on them. Maybe you should try to add some small details in red or warm browns? I am sure that it will really improve their look.
They still look great however! good clean painting and nice basing ;)What is coming next?

Desert Rain
25-07-2010, 21:53
El Aartos: The reason why I did them was because I had the models lying around unpainted, and they are still pretty good despite being, well, sort of ancient.
I haven't run any really big blocks, my biggest is 23 spears + BSB which is good enough. I could take more White Lions but I don't have more than 15 models. So at the moment I'm basically running the same army as I did in 7th but with less characters and more core.

Meraklis: Thank you. I have had the same issue with the grey, and I tried to get in a bit of warmth with the red tinged golden armour on the first few models. Unfortunately I ran out of chestnut ink, which GW doesn't make anymore. Then it was to late to change the scheme for something else so I just went on with the grey. I did think about red gems a first but I thought that blue was more appealing. I don't really have any ideas on where to put a 3rd colour, but if you've got any you are welcome to share.

I'm going to do the crew for a bolt thrower next, the RBT itself is already done, and after that I'll probably do another tiranoc chariot.

About the tournament, it was great fun and after 6 hard fought battles me and my team mate ended up at the 4th place overall, which I don't think is to bad for my first tournament. I did take (very) few pictures as I was to caught up in the battles to remember to take any. I can upload the few I have if there is any interest though.

Meraklis
26-07-2010, 04:37
hmmm I totally understand how you feel. Too late to go back so you cant really change it. It doesn't look bad, but its a bit too "cold". You could try to paint the border of the scale mail with red instead of gray... its a rather small area and it doesn't requite too much highlighting so you could do it relatively fast with all of your models and add a lot of "warmth" to your models.

The first 2 are from the first game which was against Skaven and Dark Elves in the Meeting Engagement scenario. It was hard fought and ended in a draw because we ran out of time.

The other 2 pictures are from the 4th game which was against Kislev and Empire in the Blood and Glory scenario which we won.

I've been painting something different for the past two days now since I am growing a little bit tired of painting the white/grey scheme of my army. It is still a High Elf but it is being painted in reds and gold instead of white and silver, so it is like the total opposite of my main army. I don't know if It will be just a single model or if I will begin a second High Elves army using a red scheme instead of a white one for variety. However, here are a couple of the mage I'm working on. The first one shows the skin nicely while the second one shows the rest better, the actual model looks somewhat like a mix of these two pictures.

C&C on this one is very appreciated.

I think the mage is looking good, and I dont think throwing it in with the rest of your army would hurt, as it still has some gold and grey on it to tie into the rest of the army, but at the same time it would stand out. That's what I think at least, others might disagree.

Are these lower-detailed spearmen the 4th edition models you're painting then?
I've just bought several batches from ebay that may make up a unit or even just spares for when I want to increase unit sizes to 40 each.

The Reaper Noble is great and a good change from the GW norm - the only GW prince or noble I ever really loved was the one with the Phoenix helm which is also in my avatar - the rest just never looked noble, lordly or impressive enough to me. I also love the greys - as I got into fantasy from Tolkien, I always liked thst the Grey-Elves kindred weren't dull and boring people and your thread just reminds me of them - not quite sure why though lol.

wilsongrahams: It is the newer spearmen I am painting. I have about 40 of the older plastic ones but they are a bit to monotonous for me. I agree with you that the phoenix noble is the best GW one there is. I will have to get it some day.

El Aartos: Thanks mate :) She is going to be a noble with great weapon and some other stuff, not sure yet.

After seeing some pictures in a log on another forum that inspired me, I decided to go back and change the horses on my dragon princes. I repainted the mane and tails with Adeptus Battlegrey and gave the whole horse a wash of Badab Black. I think they became much better than before.

Looking good man! The cavalry look sweet.

I think the Reaper lady could do with a little more shading to give some definition between the skin and equipment. Maybe a light Badab Black or Devlan Mud wash?

wilsongrahams
12-08-2010, 17:50
I find that black has a better result here although the ogryn flesh one may also work - mud tends to make the skin look dirty or the metal rusty for Elves, whereas the other two would shadow the skin or edge the armour - the new inks are great.

Adding some ink to a previously painted model can really help bring it up to standard with newly painted models where you may have used a different technique or different colours.

Desert Rain
13-08-2010, 12:36
Thanks for your comments guys :)

I will probably have to go back to the lady later and touch up her skin a bit. It got a bit rushed at the end since I got a bit tired of painting her and just wanted it to be finished.

I think that ogryn flesh will give it a more natural tone than badab black, but I don't know exactly what ogryn flesh looks like since I don't own the colour.

Part 1
Nordland, The Empire
2522 IC

The northern wind was freezing as it lashed at Alidan's face without mercy. The iron grey sky was matched by the furious sea which relentlessly pounded the shore. In hindsight it was almost a miracle that they had been able to land here at all in that frail looking boat which was now returning back towards the hawkship that lay anchored offshore. Alidan pulled up his hood, to give himself some small protection against the chilling wind, and signalled to his small band of scouts to follow him. Their mission in this unbeautiful land known to the men of the Empire as the Nordland was to secure a safe landing site for the rest of the army that was to come here in a week's time.

They had wandered along the coastline for several hours when they heard the sound of horses galloping behind them. Alidan quickly ordered his men to hide, their grey cloaks would make them almost invisible against the rock formation they hid in. A couple of minutes late the riders appeared and reined in their mounts just outside the rock formation in which Alidan and his men were hiding.
There were 10 of them led by a muscular man in his forties with an impressive moustache. The men were carrying bows and swords and didn't appear to wear much armour besides their huge fur cloaks that were shielding them from the piercing wind.

”Here sergeant Peiter, "'twas here I saw the movement sir” said the youngest looking of them. He couldn't be more than 20 years old.
”You sure Hans?” asked the moustached sergeant ”'Cause I didn't see no movement”
He paused for a moment before dismounting.
”Doesn't hurt to take a look though” he said as he started walking towards the rock formation.
It wasn't long before he noticed the elves hiding in there. Upon being discovered Alidan stood up and opened his mouth to speak. He didn't get the chance though before the human had drawn a pistol and pointed it at his chest.
”Well, well” Peiter said smiling, ”elves hiding out in the rocks eh? Up to no good are you now?”
”We were j...” Alidan began to reply but was once again interrupted when Peiter started talking again.
”Typical bloody elves, just movin' 'round as if you owned the place. Always takin' stuff and raiding our towns aren't you?” He said with his voice raised somewhat.
”That would be the druchii you are talking about. We are asur, and we do not raid the towns of your land” Alidan replied trying to stay as calm as you can with an aggressive human pointing a gun at you.
”Elves are elves, and I ain't carin' about what fancy names you've got for yourself. I say that we take you our now, so you won't be raiding no towns any more. Men draw your swords!”
As the Peiter spoke these words his men drew their swords and started threateningly at the elves, whom they outnumbered two to one.
”We are not raiding your land, we are just passing through. Just as regular travellers do all the time” Alidan replied still trying to stay calm, but at the same time his warrior eyes were scanning the faces of each human looking for signs that could tell him when they were about to attack.
”Just passin' through? Right, like I'd fall for that filthy elf. Attack!” Peiter screamed his last words.

A fraction of a second later Alidan had drawn his sword and decapitated the human just as he was about to pull the trigger of his pistol. The dead sergeant's men wavered for a second before charging the outnumbered elves with fury shining in their eyes. Alidan parried the slow thrust from one of the humans before trusting his own blade towards his opponent's gut. The human managed to throw himself backwards just in time to avoid being impaled by the elven blade. Taking advantage of his foe's momentarily loss of balance Alidan brought his sword down on the man's chest, cutting a deep gash that stained his grey fur crimson. The human was already dying when Alidan finished him of with a quick thrust though the heart.
Taking a quick look around Alidan saw that his men had more or less beaten the humans, though Firinir had been killed by one of them. He started to move towards the melee again, but before he could get there the remaining two humans broke and ran for their horses and started a riding away from the skirmish. Aldian grimly raised his longbow and saw his remaining men do the same. The last two humans died as their bodies were penetrated by white fletched elven arrows.

Finished the first batch of spearmen today. I am very pleased with them and painting their hands as gloves significantly reduces the big hands syndrome that they are suffering from. Hopefully the Silver Helm shields won't fall of all the time as the regular spearmen shields always do.

University starts again in one weeks time so there will probably be less painting after that. Hopefully I can finish another 6 spearmen before that though.

I like the overall colors. I too am trying for a less vibrant looking HE force.

If I could offer a suggestion it would be to wash the armor some more so that the shading is consistent in the recesses. Also try thinning out your darkest shade of gray for your white. It will look more blended and even.

Glad to see your first offerings. You should start the HE support group thread :)!

Not every model I own is in the picture since some are broken and some haven't been assembled yet, I'd estimate that about 95% of all my high elves can be seen in the pictures.

I hope you like them :)

Wow, that's quit allot of elfs Desert Rain, I do wish you the best of luck painting all of them all!
So what's the next unit to be painted?

Wow very good. Looks mighty indeed! You can certainly tell what is newly painted compared to the 4th ed ones!

I love the BSB with the staff top off the mage - makes a good change from the norm (like mine :-( yeah i'm boring and unimaginitive!).

Do you plan on rebasing your older models or do you treat them as two seperate armies?
I know I never mixed my old and new models until I'd fixed the cohesion of the whole army.

I won't be painting them all, most of the 4th edition stuff will never be used. I'm painting a chariot (not in the picture ;)) and some spearmen at the moment. Then I'll do the BSB and even more spearmen as well as more maiden guards. Then the dragon and some lion riding cavalry. I'm probably going to repaint the everqueen as well.

You can certainly tell what is newly painted compared to the 4th ed ones! The 4th edition stuff isn't painted by me ;) Though my first high elves were painted red and white just like those so they fit quite well together. I bought it all on Tradera (Swedish Ebay) last year for about £40, I was just after the Everqueen, the Maiden Guards and some archers and a few other rare nice old models. The spearmen and all the other stuff was just a bonus really. I won't be using the majority of it for anything, other than bragging about my huge HE army of course!

Thanks, I think it looks good, and since every other banner has a dragon on top of it I figured that the BSB should also have one, and a bigger one as well!

I have finally finished the six spearmen, so now it is 12 down and 12 to go.
However, I'm tired of painting spears at the moment so I will take a break and paint another chariot and a BSB before I go back and finish the unit.

I know how you feel when you get fed up of painting something, and then you are torn when you want to finish a unit but also keep staring at it getting nowhere.

The Spearmen look good. The colour scheme suits the spearmen really well, especially with the silver against the grey with just the gems for the hint of colour - I once thought about that myself but didn't think it'd work but you have pulled it off well.

What have you in mind to paint instead to revive the spark?

However, I think that it turned out great and the spearmen looks especially good in it. I'm trying my best to make those minis good-looking since the sculpts aren't that great.

What have you in mind to paint instead to revive the spark?I'm going to do a chariot now as I mentioned before, I'm also considering doing the dragon since I've been wanting to do that ever since I got it and it should be something different from all the rank and fire troops that I've painted during the last months.

I think the green on the bases makes the difference as it adds even more colour to the mix.

Painting a chariot for fun? I'm not enjoying painting mine, after needing five coats of bone over two coats of brown before I could even start highlighting! I feel like I've painted hundreds of them! They are looking quite good though, and I will use a white undercoat for my Lion Chariot when I get round to painting that.

I too have been putting off painting my dragon but it's high on the list of priorities now having decided on a colour scheme (Mixed hormogaunt purple, scorched brown, codex grey and catachan green base highlighted by adding bone gradually).

The chariot got boring to paint, and it isn't that high on the priority list yet (which is to have my current 2000 points list painted).

Instead I started work on the BSB, and I'm doing some experiments with the gold on him and I'm pretty pleased with the results so far. He is still very WIP so don't judge me yet!

Sorry for the crappy picture, didn't have a real camera at hand so I used my mobile phone instead.

Very good. The gold does seem to have more yellow in it - is that the experimentation you are referring to?

Getting your basic army painted for gaming is always a good way of doing things. We should all take note!

Desert Rain

Yeah I tried to make it more yellow, I also used some different colours since my normal way of doing it relies on Brown Ink which GW doesn't make any more and mine is almost empty. So I'm trying to come up with a new way of painting gold that is as similar as possible to my old method.

I've finished the BSB now, in just over two days of painting which much be some sort of record for me ;)
I am very pleased with him, and I appreciate all your comments!

My brown ink is alas nearly empty too, however a similar result is achieved using black ink mised with orgn ink as the tone is the same, except you will have a matte finish instead of gloss.

As to the BSB, congratulations on how fast you have finished the model - I especially like the flames on the banner - they have a glowing ember red glow to them that is more menacing than a pretty flame. It also looks more supernatural than the yellow wood burning flame!

The icon atop the pole is also very neatly done and comes off very well, actually looking like one metal overlaid onto the other rather than just awkward painting.

Ps, sorry if I hijack and reply to every post you make but I like your army and it's my favourite to see growing (except my own obviously).

Thanks a lot all of you :)

I'm afraid that it will be a while before I do another update. I've started on a swordmaster musician and a standard bearer (old ones) but I haven't had a lot of time since I just moved, and will have an exam soon as well. Hopefully they can be done before the end of the month though.

Great army - always nice to see a full army shot with HE's that are fully painted! Keep up the good work. Do you have enought core troops to field a sizeable army?

Nice looking bsb there. I like the shading on his cloak and well.. it's just a great model and you painted it very well.
The silver helm shields on the spearmen look very nice too. It gives a bit more variety than all those standard shields.

Thanks a lot guys, nice to see that someone is still remembering this thread :) I haven't done anything warhammer related since my last post in this thread, in November. Maybe I'll get back into it one day but I don't know when that will happen.
The banner of the BSB broke off when I moved and I haven't tried to fix it yet but hopefully I can do it since I am very proud of that model.

Ghrino: I have very few painted core troops so I can only field about 1250 points using painted models.

I have to ask, how did you do the metal on the BSB top? It is a great color, not too gold and a bit brownish. Very nice. Please let me (us) how you did it.

Desert Rain

It was some time ago so I might not remember it exactly right but it was something like this:

On a black undercoat I started with brazen brass, washed with badab black then a drybrush of shining gold and finaly a light dusting of mithril silver.

Hi :)
Thank you I'm glad that you like my models. I don't know if there will be anything new soon. As I've mentioned above I've been having a break in warhammer for various reasons. But I promise that as soon as I start painting again I will post it here!

Nice work on the BSB!

Out of interest, could you go over how you do those white underrobes on your swordmasters and other infantry again? I've been having no end of problem with that myself.

Desert Rain

It's jut shadow grey followed by space wolves grey and then skull white. You'll have to paint several layers to get a strong colour.

As I'm slowly getting back into warhammer again after a long break I'll be starting to update in this log once again :)

To start things of I'll be painting something awesome, so I don't get bored with it before I can really get back in again. So therefore I'll be painting this:
http://i315.photobucket.com/albums/ll480/Wallner90/IMG_0191.jpg

As I said many pages back the dragon will be brown, or more specifically brown scales and beige skin. I'm still not sure on how to do the wing membranes. I'm thinking beige for them as well, but a lighter tone than the skin. Other ideas are welcome here as I need some inspiration!

I will start the painting later tonight, so hopefully I can show some progress in some hours' time :D

I've made some progress :)
I decided to start with the base so that I didn't risk ruining the paintwork of the dragons itself by accidently drybrushing over already painted areas.

The sand needs two more layers to make it look like it does on the other minis, and I'll do two more layers on the rock as well before I start on the dragon itself. Hopefully the base will be done by tomorrow.

This is what it looks like now:

I like to know how did you do your the base! I'm new at making this! I only use glue and then put sand on it, but you say you use 3 layers? I need some advice, and know why three layers, you put glue on the base, then sand, then glue, then sand? Or how? Only for the dragon 3 layers or for all bases?

Thanks in advance!

I was actually talking about layers of paint, I use scorched brown, graveyard earth and finally bleached bone.

But now that you ask, I actually use three layers for the sand as well ;)
First glue and then sand, and after it has dried I cover it in a mix of glue and water to seal the surface so that the sand doesn't risk coming off.

Painting has been put on hold for a while since I've been reading A Dance With Dragons, which has taken up all my spare time :)
