View Full Version : Craftworld Prime-or! Frosty's Eldar Log

Sup gents and ladies.

I have decided to brush the dust off my Eldar, and miniature painting in general.

This log is going to help me hopefully accomplishing 3 things:

1) Get older Eldar units that I have painted "up to snuff" and updated to my new personal craftworld, the "Void Tigers" of "insert craftworld name here" (working title) :D

2) Paint new units, things I feel are "safe" to work on before the new Eldar dex comes out, and hopefully have a sizeable force ready by the time of the book's release.

3)Get my skills back...or at least some of em. I havent laid paint on a model in almost a year, and havent done a seriously large amount of painting in about 3 years. Uh oh.

Here is a guardian test model, the basis for the entire craftworld's paint scheme.

Yeah, Im pretty excited. I want to use that flame motif on everything. The crafworld symbol is going to be a profile shot of a tiger's head, stylized with flames emanating from it. Ill draw it up, when Im not being lazy :D

Thanks for the comment! I think this thread is goign to keep me really motivated. Oh yeah, and Ill get a shot of my workspace, too. I forgot it earlier.

Ok, so these are the units that already had paint on em! Spent a few hours getting them all based up (I hate basing)

1)Banshees, updated to new craftworld colors.
2)Reapers, updated.
3)Scouts, updated.
4) Dire Avengers, which are original for this craftworld, and the most recent eldar that I have painted (a year? ago)

Enjoy.

There's some really nice-looking stuff there, and I'm saying that through my deep personal hatred of Eldar (bloody space elves) so that's quite a compliment :)

I particularly like the runes-on-forehead things, I must confess I don't know what any of them mean but they look very good, especially on the Banshees.

FearFrost
21-01-2006, 22:54
Thanks man!

They are aspect symbols...each one corresponds to the aspect warrior's temple.

Kind of old school 40k, actually...they used to put runes on eldar helmets...not so much anymore.

I am old school, however. Hence the harlequins, too :D

Thanks man!

For the painting question...none, yet :D

I just based up all those painted models at once, yesterday...took about 2 hours, maybe.

I dont paint individual models at a time, unless they are characters or something like that...I usually "chain paint" entire units at once, ie doing one color/highlight/etc to all the models at the same time.

MUCH faster, and you get more consistent results. Boring, however ;)

I expect to get a unit done maybe every couple weeks...I am a superbusy starving art student, so I have a ton of other obligations. This Eldar stuff is purely for relaxation :)

Really beautiful Eldar - the aspect warriors are a real treat, but my favourite is your DA exarch - he looks so characterful! Can't wait for more pics

As for the list itself, I have a couple of suggestions

1. Give the banshee exarch an executioner - it's a must!
2. If you have the points, give the dragon exarch a firepike - a fusion gun seems such a waste ;)
3. Consider breaking out the rangers into 2 squads of 3 to give you opportunity to split your fire.
4. Give your falcon and fire prism holo-fields - they'll last most games untouched with the holo-field/spirit stone combo

You've made some interesting choices with some of your heavy weapons - it's nice to see some of the lesser-used options being taken to the field!

Really like the colours used, they seem to go together perfectly and they are very well executed.

However I do believe you should remove the points values from your list you posted as I think it breaks forum rules.

FearFrost

Oh crap, I didnt know that. Oops. Ill fix it now. Are total point values ok, at least?

Or should I just remove everything?

Thanks!

1) I actually converted the banshee exarch to have the regular weapons, just to keep points down. I know the executioner is worth it, I just wanted a different model, too ;)

2) I misread my codex when I read the firepike entry...didnt realize it had better range AND better strength. I even like the model better...good call.

3)REALLY good idea! I CANT WAIT for those new ranger models...they look frickin awesome!

4)Holo fields are SO expensive...and its such a temptation to go crazy with Eldar upgrades. I was considering giving the fire prism a shuriken cannon, so it had a second weapon to fire every turn and could still go 12"...Ill consider the holo field for the falcon, perhaps. Its the same reason I avoided crystal targetting matrixes for the prizm/vypers.

I hate seeing armies overloaded with starcannons, its the number one whine about Eldar. I'd rather have a balanced list, personally. In fact, I dont think I have any starcannons in this list...schweet.

I'd also like to have guardians be able to shoot past 12", but thats another story entirely. :D

the Dire avenget exarch is pretty sweet, what head was used? the plastic guardian head with a GS cloth over his face?

as for the banshees, probly the best red color scheme i have ever seen done with them. most turn out ick, but these i like, i might borrow this scheme for my saim hainn now. i might actually be arsed to use them in it.

and for the harlequins, since your going to use them as banshees, are you going to weapon swap the chain swords out? and are you going to paint them in a more traditional Harlequin scheme or paint htem as your other banshees to blend them in?
personally i woul go with a typical harlequin look for that just in case factor the harlequins may get notices in a future codex.

as for the basing, i like the look you got there. i started a thread with a poll trying to get opinions on what to base my deathwing as and i think basing is a pretty imortant decision. yours has turned out pretty goood.

Yeah, the plastic guardian head with a GS ninja mask :)

I am pretty happy with my banshees, I hope by using some of the same colors as my guardians that they will fit in nicely. Thanks!

Well, whenever I happen to use the harlequins (not often, more than likely) I will just let my opponent know that I am counting them as banshees for rules, and that should take care of it. Their weapons are so mixed that I replacing them seems like it wouldnt really be worth it...I would have to hack of almost all of their hands. I like the old, wacky looking harlequin weapons anyways.

I'm going to go traditional matches-nothing-crazy-colors-and-patterns style for my harlequins, for sure. The wont have anything in common with the banshees except the rules :)

Glad you like the bases. If anyone wants to know how (what colors/etc) I can post a quickie tutorial...

if you can get ahold of some of the 2nd edition weapon sprues there is a nice eldar power sword on it.

and you dont really need to remove the whole hand, on the swords anyways. i have had to convert some of my harlequins to not have any 2 alike in my harlequin army. and the one solitaire with either a pointing or the raised kiss (cant rem which) has dontated about 3 of his hands (had several of them) since the kiss plasma pistol one is hard as hell to trade and get.

also if you had to redo the arms, you can get the old 2nd edition arm sprues from GW for about 1.50 US, where are you located anyways?

here is how i converted your one in the middle with one of those kiss'e
http://photobucket.com/albums/b152/orcdom/Harlequins/?action=view&current=HarlequinTroupe01-01.jpg

shorten that link at the end of harlequin are some other harlequin pics as well.

the one on the right (in your pic) add a fusion gun tip (providing you would ever use the harlequin rules) to the hand flamer and you have a fusion pistol.

i have some extra harlequins if your in the US if you might have something to trade.

I dig that conversion a lot, actually. Im pretty much holding out for new harlequin miniatures (dubious) before I ever worry about using actual harlequin rules, so Im not too concerned with that they are armed with. My regular (sort of, I dont play often) opponent will have no problem with me just counting all the various harlequin weapons as power wep/shuri pistol.

I just dig the old models a bit too much to hack em up. I do really like what you did to yours, however.

Curses. Quandry!

I have a bunch of the old arm sprues, too :)

We shall see, thanks for the sugestion.

I did have it that way initially, but it just didnt get the job done. The angle in the shots makes the axe look funky, but it looks a lot more dynamic in person, I think.

It gives the impression of her swinging it, which I thought was cool.

The reason I didnt go two swords is that I found an old (like, 2nd edition 11 year old model) banshee exarch that I painted up when I was a kid, and decided to hack the axe off. I just like the combination of the old and new models.

I also plan on mixing a few older fire dragons into my FD squad, as well as converting their exarch to have a different head...possibly a head from a high elf dragon prince or something like that.

Yeah man, tell me about it. Rough, but it will pay off when every boring model in my army has been painting in one fell swoop!

Maybe.

Nah, Ill just paint it on banners/vehicles. I hate decals, and I like freehanding stuff :)

I wish I could do backbanners, but I have clumsy hands, and I know those would be the first thing to get broken while playing...

If you guys want to see some of my portfolio shots (only about 5 of em, NOT miniatures), look here:

Anyways, thats what has been keeping me so damned busy ;)

Post March 15th, Ill be back to painting and updating this thread some more :)

Very Bloody nice! Get those guardians ready and take a smallish army picture for us. That will make us all drop our jaws! Honestly the best looking eldar army Ive seen.

I hate it how all Eldar players can paint really well.

And yes, that is a compliment! :D

I absolutely love the paint scheme! The miniatures look fantastic! Keep up the amazing work!

My favorite are the banshees- those are unbelievable! I'm definately going to base my own off of something along those lines (I won't rip you off, don't worry ;) ).

Looking forward to seeing more.

hi there fearfrost,
i have just read through this thread, i love it so far, speaking as somebody who has never really considered eldar as an army for me, but i love the cool almost celtic cymbols. really like your colourscheme because it has a lot of depth.
keep it up
