there lovely. Is there any chance of a guide to say how you built up the white? Im interested for some work of my own and your white is alot cleaner and nicer than mine?

spikyjames
22-01-2006, 22:51
i do the white by giving the mini's 2 undercoats of skull white spray, i then re-undercoat all the areas that ain't going to be white chaos black.

i always do the white last, all i do is line it with shadow grey and then neaten up any mistakes using fortress grey. once this is done i use watered down skull white probably 2 parts water to 1 part paint and paint on as many layers as it takes to cover the grey up.

hope this helps

"i do the white by giving the mini's 2 undercoats of skull white spray, i then re-undercoat all the areas that ain't going to be white chaos black. "

- So you paint on the sprues, then glue and touch up? Or do you use tape?

spikyjames
22-01-2006, 23:07
sorry mate, the minis are all glued together before i undercoat apart from the arms which i leave off throughout the painting process.
this pic should give you an idea of what i mean
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/mentor%20leigon/100_0819.jpg
if your wondering what the metal rods are, they're just paper clips that i remove after i'm finished.

23-01-2006, 04:18
OOH! you have to tell me how you did those bolters

i see, a cut-down scope, and some trimming, but for the barrel did you use plastic tube? any wip pictures?

spikyjames
23-01-2006, 07:06
the barrels are smoke launchers tubes with the end filled with green stuff and then drilled out, and your right about the cut down scope.

Awsome topic!I really like this marines!I think i will make a diorama with this scheme. Can i ask what color did you use for the eyes ?

spikyjames
23-01-2006, 09:52
the eyes were done with scab red then blood red then fiery orange, with less of each subsequent paint. then a little spot of white once thats all done.

If you don't win best painted....

The conversions on the bolters are great, you should get even more browny points for those and now people migt stop nagging you about fluff!

*points accusingly at some other people*

Please tell us the army list so we know whats to come! Please!

*gets down on knees and starts begging*

It would give me an idea of what to look foward to!

spikyjames
23-01-2006, 17:03
this is whats left to come
1 more tac squad, 2 predators, a vindicator, a dreadnought and the last thing i do will probably be the commander in terminator armour.

the weapons are all done for the last tac squad, all the marine bolters are slightly extended and the sarg has a bulpup version. the dreadnought's made as are 1 of the predators and the vindicator.
i'm hoping to have the rest of the 2nd tac squad and the predator painted by the end of this weekend then i'll start painting the dreadnought.

29-01-2006, 14:48
James those are beautiful. I'm looking forward to that dreadnaught as well

Question though; why is the second tactical squad more 'blinged up' than the first. I know the fluff and all, so are they going to be veterans or something?

spikyjames
29-01-2006, 15:34
Question though; why is the second tactical squad more 'blinged up' than the first. I know the fluff and all, so are they going to be veterans or something?

nah, the first ones were the first squad i did. when i write the fluff for the army i'll write a reason for this, tried and tested kit or something like that.

Ah man too good! I'm hopefully gonna paint up a squad of Mentors just for my own display or to sell.

How do you highlight the green? Thicker, dimmer colour and then highest colour over that?

spikyjames
29-01-2006, 19:48
How do you highlight the green? Thicker, dimmer colour and then highest colour over that?

the green is done over a black undercoat, starting with da green followed by a highlight of 50/50 da green/goblin green, then another highlight of goblin green, then another highlight of 50/50 goblin green/skull white.

what will be next?

KayvaanShrike
30-01-2006, 00:39
Dude, those are soo sweet! I will keep coming back to this thread just to see what magic you have applied to your next model! Is the Dreadnought standard, or have you converted it in anyway? I like the Rapter door on the Pred, looks good.

What did you use to make the Razorback turret? Looks like Pred H.Bolters with something joining them?

spikyjames
30-01-2006, 07:14
the dreadnought has an extended assault cannon and the power pack has been upgraded, it also has a few extra symbols and stuff.
as for the razorback it's the heavy bolters from a predator with the heavy bolter mount form a land raider with a few extra bits.

james

probably some sort of guard next, based around an inquisition task force of some sort.

KayvaanShrike
30-01-2006, 11:27

James that is amazing! The paintjob is just so clean but it doesnt look like its right out of the factory, since you have weathered and battered it nicely, without going over the top on it, be nice to see more of your army as more gets painted.

What else have you got to paint?

colhodg
30-01-2006, 17:54
It's not often I see a marine army that's well painted, themed and looks a wee bit diffferent but that's definitely what you've got here.

Group photo/s if you could manage some when they're done would be very much appreciated - well done.

Woo! They look great!

I usually avoid people that create their own chapters, usually because they go OTT (over-the-top) with adding wargear and the like...

BUT, you've got the balance juuust right!
They look different and individualistic, without being crowded out...

I can't wait for that Dreadnought to show up...
You've inspired me to start my own log for my newish Blood Pact Army

Keep on,
last_chancer :wtf:

P.S. @ Skiff: Thank you for your sentiment...
I'm glad that your country had the common sense to stay out of iraq...

:wtf: Last_chancer ? Mentor Legion isn't made up! It's a real chapter focused on testing new and improved wargear!

Woah, hey! I was complimenting him!

I take it all back...
I just didn't recognise them as a Codex Astartes chapter...
(after all, he DID use Raptor doors...)

Keep on,

03-02-2006, 17:57
Now THAT is how a fighting Company of the Mentor Legion should look!

The conversions are amazing and the paintjob is second to none.

May I ask if you intend to incorporate some of the newer helmet designs that the current SM sprues have a few of?I think they would fit a "prototype look" very well.

spikyjames
03-02-2006, 19:50
i'm still thinking of ideas for my next tactical squad, if anybody has some it would be good to hear them.
dreadnought's finished just got to complete the base and pic's will be here in an hour or so.

wow that looks great, matches your mentor marines perfectly. Out of interest, what are you going to paint next?

village idiot
03-02-2006, 20:52
dreadnought looks great, I have no quarrells with it. Also, How fast are you painting these, it seems to be every few days a tank/squad comes rolling out.

Again, well done, top marks

spikyjames
03-02-2006, 21:08
How fast are you painting these, it seems to be every few days a tank/squad comes rolling out.

at the minute i'm painting every night, so i'm getting through them fairly quick, this has taken me about ten hours in total and i paint for a minimum of about 4 hours a night.
next will be a vindicator, i've also just recieved a mkIVc from forgeworld so this has to get built, unfortunatly this only comes with las-cannons so i'm gonna have to build some heavy bolters for the side sponsons.

cheers

james:)

03-02-2006, 21:09
James, on the dreadnought that waist joint looks...well wrong. Dunno what it is but there's something in that back view that just doesn't look right if you lnow what I mean.

spikyjames
03-02-2006, 21:20
yeah i know what you mean but it's just where the bodies leaning more forward. if i put the body straight onto the joint it would be leaning quite far back.

hi all
thanks for all the feed back so far, i'm gonna start putting pic's of WIP stuff just so that you lot can see what's coming next. at the moment i've started painting the vindicator and hopefully i'll have finished it by tonight.
last night i made my next predator it's one of the forgeworld ones and unfortunatley it didn't come with heavy bolters so i had to make my own(well sort of) i was a bit dubious about getting this kit at first but i think it'll add even more character to the army, let me know what you all think.

05-02-2006, 10:45
Wow, those sponsons look so much better I guess 'll have to get myself some.

I really love what you did with the brass eagle on the Dread, consider it looted.

Great Work

HiredSword.
05-02-2006, 11:09
James, what exactly is it about the dread are you not pleased with?

I thought it might be the eagle motif because it looks a bit cluttered but i keep looking back on it and it keeps growing on me. Possibly the most original model in your army imo, nice one.

spikyjames
05-02-2006, 11:13
James, what exactly is it about the dread are you not pleased with?

don't know really, just wasn't 100%:(

as for the sponsons on the pred above, they are a tad on the small side but i think they look a bit more hi tech than the norm.

james:)

HiredSword.
05-02-2006, 11:38
ok, i think i might of got it.

Could it be the eagle head motifs on the shoulder pad and front? They don't seem to 'blend' with the model, just look they've been stuck on, maybe if you look at the forgeworl rhino doors for inspiration by just greenstuffing a scroll underneath the motif to make it look more like part of it or something

ExoCowboy
05-02-2006, 11:46
Just love your work, great stuff, and you are doing them really fast.

I envy you

ZAChos
05-02-2006, 14:42
The problem with the dread is the white background. The white parts of the dread blend with it, and makes it look odd, as if its malnourished. I don't think theres anything really wrong with it.

KayvaanShrike
05-02-2006, 18:22
James things are looking great, could you do a shot of all the models you have painted so far together?
i think the Dread looks great, so does the rest of your army. And the smaller, high-tech sponsons on the Pred go with your fluff well. When you say you didn't get H.Bolters with it, you mean the actual H.Bolters rather than the mounts? Cause those mounts look like they are resin?

tzeentchgiant
05-02-2006, 18:33
All looking great so far, I would like to secod the request for an army shot, as it's progressing so quickly and well since the last time I checked in on it.

Fantastic work, this lot. Love the conversions, and the Dreadnought's fine, just the gold shade on the aquila looks a little off.

BTW, with Scotland beating France, it's pretty much barring upsets gifted England the trophy.
Great achievement, just thought I'd let that soak in.

on another note, does anybody have an opinion on the extended assault cannon on the dread?I thought something looked different from the side, but I couldn't pin my finger on it. And I think that's the PERFECT thing for this kind of army. Nothing so radically different as to stand out like a sore thumb, but it makes you look twice and say "Now... what's going on here?" Fantastic job. I just hope no one wonders if it's supposed to be a long barreled Assault Cannon, like in the VDR sense.

07-02-2006, 19:19
James that Vindicator is sweet!! Is that the FW one, or did you convert a rhino with the old Vindicator bits? You still amaze me at how those colours just work so well together and how both are so clean and crisp but not as was said before looking like they are straight out the factory!

Keep up the great work!

MIGHTYPanhead
07-02-2006, 20:28
its the FW one from what i can see, and it looks ace!

will the last squad be converted in a ny way? or just stock-from-the-box?

spikyjames
07-02-2006, 21:25
yeah the vindicator is from FW. as for the last squad the weapons are already done (i'll post a pic in the next couple of days) as for the marines i've been racking my brains about what to do with them, they might all have helmet sights with some sort of small sight similar to those on the other squads weapons. as for the bodies and legs i'm at a little bit of a loose end might just alter the pose a little:confused:

james

HiredSword.
07-02-2006, 21:29
do a praetorian style wall of fire with the first 5 marines kneeling and the rest behind them, that would work well with the targetting sights on the helmets.

Now show us more photos! :D

MIGHTYPanhead
07-02-2006, 21:45
or, onthe flip side oyu could do an all running squad

or, a command-esque squad, with some crouching, giving squad manouvers.. etc.

either way, it'll look cool whatever you do :)

KayvaanShrike
07-02-2006, 22:36
Yeh, or you could give them some added armour plates? Not so they are bulky but you can tell that they are wearing some new gear. Or give them some new sort of grenade??? That would b quite cool.

spikyjames
08-02-2006, 22:38
well as promised i've taken some pics wip of my last tactical squad, just the legs and torso's. the GS is still a bit rough at the minute but i'll neaten it up as it dries. there's alot more work still to go into these but i just thought i'd give you all an idea of whats coming next, and also i thought i needed a break from painting:p

i was screwed up with that at first too, and if i am right you should be able to hold it as normal, the grip you see is sorta like a riot shotgun with a grip on the pump action, or like the small sub machine guns with the grip a couple inches behind the end of the barrell.

In the row of three, how's the middle one gonna be held?

this will be held by the squad sarg, it wont be held in a shooting pose he'll be holding it with his left hand with the butt resting against his hip(well sort of) he'll probably have a knife in his other hand, i'll try and get pics up in the next couple of hours it's meant to be a bullpup version.
as for the tutorial i'll try and get one done in a couple of weeks, for now here's the parts i used-1x marine bolter
1x kroot rifle
1x combi melta(bolter barrel)
1x boltpistol (magazine)
hope this helps in the meantime.

Great looking progress so far James. Some really nice things coming out here. The FW Vindi looks so odd without the dozer blade though! I like them as it reminds me of one of the Thunderbirds machines from when I was little, but its refreshing to see the differance.

The bolter pics on the previous page are interesting. The straight clips look a little bit to chunky to locate in the smaller gun, what if you shaved some of the excess matgerial off the sides of it to narrow its profile a little? The bullpup rifle look slike the area between grip and magazine is a little to small for an armoured hand to reach into, as there is still free room maybe you could move the mag back a little ? Even if he is holding it.

Just some thoughts, keep up the good work! I too am going to work towards actually finishing my marines as well, having set a deadline of next years Carnage... so will have to get as productive as you!

They all look really nice, my only qualm is the loin cloth on the missile luancher guy seems to be sticking forward at a unrealistic angle so unless they have started to extend the crouch area forward to allow space for SM's to get a bit excited..... Basically bend it backwards.

I was wondering how you would have the marine holding the bulpup bolter, nice way of doing it though i think it would have looked better in a harness with the sergeant pointing in the direction he is throwing that grenade.

Know exactly what you mean. When you make 1,500 points of Marines, you start to get what I call 'marine fatigue'. Got it big-style by the time I'd finished constructing the 1,500 point Marine army I'm currently painting up. i've done this using scorched brown and a small dry brush, then i brush the paint off on a bit of tissue first(not drybrushing) so that it's still fairly wet, and then just brush the lower parts of the tank.

the vehicles were the only thing's in the army to be painted with a black undercoat, the white on these was done by painting the whole area with shadow grey and then progressive layers of skull white, fairly watered down for smoothness, this will take a fairly long time and alot of coats of white.

hope this helps

pompeyladbfp
15-02-2006, 13:29
objective markers id make 3 on 40mm or 60mm bases, you want them quite flat, so the old guard bases (epic titan?) will do. i think a dropped ammo carte full of new shiny guns, the old wounded model..(classic) and maybe a ancient stc system (they like future tech and work in conjunction with admech if i recall)

minefor pompey pillage if im using black temp's will be a banner pole stuck in the ground, a dead marine or ancient suit of power armour and sword in stone.

KayvaanShrike
15-02-2006, 13:36
James these are looking amazing, that Pred looks great, I like the converted H.Bolter sponsons on it, they look good. In one of the UK WD's there was the rule of engagement article, and there was ideas for objective markers in there, some cool ones actually. Also I beleive the rulebook has objective marker ideas in it as well, could have a look there. You could make it relavent to your army as well, a banner with chapter iconography that needs recovered etc. Fallen case of geneseed would be cool, with like a "wounded" servitor gaurding it or something.

personally with the superb paintjob you have done. and esp since white is a a pain in the ass to get right. i would go for the matte finish especially since its more natural, especially for marines.

but to protect them (referring to the first part of my post) i would give them a couple coats of gloss to seal them and protect them.
gloss is typically a heavier coat, harder coat, more durable. then use the matte to bring the gloss shine away.

the only problem is that the gloss tends to screw up on static grass from what i have found, but dullcoate dont.

you can get testors dullcoate in a non aerosol, if aerosol is the problem for fellas overseas. but i dont know if its for airbrush application or brush on. i just saw it at the hobby store a couple weeks ago.

but of all i would go with the matte.

and you dont see the depth of the clears with the matte either. i dipped some figures and gave them an additional clear coat over the polyurethene, static grassed the bases and then killed the shine with "Testors Dullcoate" and they are to a base paint finish without any shine and it dont look like the clear had been caked on either.

As already said here, gloss and then matt seems to be the way to go. In the absense of Testors Dullcoat (although there are websites that sell it over here), a thin 'ard coat followed be a couple of thin coats of GW Matt Varnish seems to work ok, but make sure each coat is completely dry (12-24hrs is best) before putting on the next. And test it first just in case...

When I first saw the WIP, I thought he was a bit on the 'tubby side', even for a terminator:p .

But I waited to see it fully done before I said anything, and I'm glad I did, because he looks really really good. Without overpowering the model with scrolls and medallions (I don't have a problem with people doing that, but as said, it wouldn't really fit this army so well) you gave him a commanding presence. I love the subtle conversions and the execution of the painting is to a very high degree, good job and well done for completing such a fine army in what I would say was a very short time.

22-02-2006, 15:19
Very nice, sir. One thing is bugging me about the commander (not that I have ANY room to talk... but). It's just with his pose, and the tabbard, he seems a bit off balance, and kinda hunched. Which in and of itself is not really bad, per se... I just can't shake this inkling at the back of my brain that he looks like an Ork... posture wise, anyway. It just kinda takes away from the model for me. *shrug*

it looks really nice, please post a bigger full army picture.

with the commander, the only thing nagging me is that the bottom robe should be the same width as the bit round the torso, or it makes him look fat.

Also, I destest helmetless terminators on principle, but thats not your fault :)

keep the awesome pictures coming.

spikyjames
22-02-2006, 17:27
the problem with the size of the pic is that photobucket auto re-sizes them.

see if the attached pic below comes out bigger:)

james

Anvils Hammer
22-02-2006, 17:33
yep, much better, but its attached twice :)
photo bucket only resizes if you go above a certain limit, you can store large files, but once you go over it resized to a very small file, far smaller than the maximum size allowed.

hope this helps

hello all well it's been a long time since i've put anything on here and the army is just getting bigger. for today i've got the first of 2 land speeder tornado's and a new commander let me know what you think of the wip pics

the new commander, watch this space for a tactical squad inthe same type of armour (sorry the pics a bit blurred)
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_0926.jpg

you'll notice the other one being done just off to the side.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/WIP%20Stuff/100_0925.jpg

i've also made another terminator to make the squad upto 5 so it can be used as an elites choice.

make the picture smaller,

make the groin sheild a fair bit narrower at the bottom, at the moment it looks a bit restrictive to the movement of the legs.

and finally... get it painted!!! :)

The captain is looking good so far but the groin plate looks it bit odd - too big. How did you place in the GT finals?

spikyjames
11-03-2006, 19:22
i was 124th overall out of 141 but it's what i expected due to all the cheesey armies that were there( there was an army thet had around a 70 man seer council and 2 minimum guardian squads). was up for best army but due to a rather nice custodes army i never won:cries:

never mind i had a good weekend with one of the best painted armies (the best IMO).

now the armies expanding, all squads will eventually be 10 man and i'm making a few needed changes to the list for tournie play. should be something like this-

master- jump pack, tiffy armour, bolt pistol, master crafted power weapon

dread- standard

terminator squad- 2x assault cannon's

2x tac squads, 7 men, plasma gun, missile launcher

1x tac squad, 6 men, plasma gun

1x assault squad, 8 men, 2x flamer, vet sarg power fist

1x land speeder tornado

1x land speeder tornado

2x predator anhilator's twin-linked las-cannon, heavy bolter sponsons.(one has smoke launchers)

this lot comes to 1500 point pretty much on the nose.

let me know what you think.

on Anvil's hammer's point; the purity seals are fine left blank as the writing could be on the actual seal.

spikyjames
15-03-2006, 22:14
:( nope sorry all no more white going on this, i did consider putting white on the doors but i feel it would have been a tad too much. the white background doesn't really portray the model in the best light what with the white on the wings blending in.

at the minute i've got a fairly large amount of stuff on and can't really spend the amount of time i would like painting the things i need for this army:cries: i've got another project with a deadline coming up and once i finalise the details and the mini's arrive most of my time will be dedicated to that.

Oh yes yes, very nice. Good use of the termie shield plates there, and combined with the additional plates, it's loooks very nice. the only thing I can suggest is the one knee should be a company colour od some such. The pristing white legs look too monotone when compared to the rest of the figure, it's the only area without any contrasting colouring.

the shoulder pads are terminator pads trimmed and the gaps were filled with green stuff.

everything i'm doing now is just extra, but i also have a chaplain with jump pack, another land speeder and i want to do another tactical squad. this army is only going to get bigger, i have plans to make all the squads up to ten men and also fill all the spaces on the army list to a maximum.
