Anyone run this combo? Starting out a helf army and really liked the idea of one surrounded by 3 eagles, flying around being a general nuisance.
How would you kit him out and what kind of tactics would you use?

Thanks

I used one in my old Chracian-Themed army. He was really effective with Guardian Phoenix, Annulian Crystal and a Powerstone. I also had a BSB on an Eagle with Foe Bane and Enchanted Shield. He was pretty meaty in combat against other characters.

It can be good and a great way to play the point denial card but you'll have to be good at hiding from enemy shooting and blocking incoming magic...

Right on the Mark there. If you can deal effectively with these 2 things then the manoeuvrability will make an excellent addition to the already hefty potential of the archmage.

I like the idea of the guardian phoenix, but i'm going to suggest that you don't take it because if you get to the point where you need it, you have already screwed up somewhere. Either the sacred incense (not recommended because again, why have you allowed them to shoot at you!) or the amulet of fire will help with these issues, even the Loremaster cloak might be a good bet in some ways.

In terms of the magic offence, anything that you might normally select is going to work just as well here.

I hope this is use to you,
Kind regards,

This always seems to be the problem with this kind of guy for me. You end up spending all your magic item allowance on protective items (against magic and shooting) to the point where even if you are in a great position, you haven't got the offensive magic items to make it count. Mmm, difficult... let us know how you get on, I need the tips if you can get it to work :).

This is how I planned using my Wood Elf General if I ever got round to building him (great eagle, couple eagle escort, with hawk riders near.)
That said, I haven't given much thought for a High Elf archmage, so to answer your first question, no, I haven't run that combo.
I would think that the Dragon Mage is a bit more effective...terror is just that good.
But, if you are dead set, I'd have to comment on the rest of the army as well. That's just the thing about High Elves, Wood Elves, Dark Elves, Eldar...they all are synergistic armies that require aid from other units. A few extra great eagles may not function as such. March blocking and harrassing flanks comes to mind when running any amount of eagles...chasing down skirmishers and destroying warmachines and crew...are these the battlefield rolls you wish for your 500+ pair of units to accomplish?
Well, until you've decided on what you want him to do other than look bad-assed I can only guess at what to equip him with.
I'd just think giving him the things you'd normally give to an Archmage...
One thing that comes to mind is the Golden Crown of Atrazar...ignore first wound...good against attacks but also certain miscasts. Man, dunno...
