View Full Version : the high host assembles (mantic)

hey all.

i'm starting this log to cover the start of my high elf army which will be made with mantic games fantastic elven miniatures.

At the moment thier travel bag and some spearmen are supposedly on thier way (cross-atlantic postage seems to take forever. i ordered around the 20th november)

my scheme will be blue and bronze, with shields being white with blue runes. runes will be in the old viking style, to give a little flair to the force.

i have been working with one of my local gaming stores to get more elves, but apparently his distributers are not carrying mantic miniatures due to mantic only having "one item available"

he says he'll keep working on it, and so i will keep you all informed of my progress. i plan to take this army to 3k minimum, with a possibly massive cavalry unit, all fates depending.

till nextime,

lord marcus

Blame the Royal Mail big bosses and the trade strikes for the delay...

Your colour scheme sounds interesting. Will it be dark blues or light?

i'm planning on using enchanted blue, so about a middle of the road between light and dark.

i'm a bit out of touch with world news atm (focusing on the hiring freeze in town and trying to find work)

so whats happened in jolly old england?

looking foward to seeing these elves, i personaly an considering an undead army from mantic

lord marcus
06-12-2009, 23:15
yea. the undead are forming the basis of my 2000 point addition to my tomb kings army. the added units are themed towards a barrow king coming home ot his ancestor's city (my tomb kings force is based in quatar)

i'll keep you all updated on the arrival of the elves. hopefully they'll come tommorow (monday - knock on wood)

but for now, i am to feast on orange chicken from the local chinese restaruant/takeout.

cyall soon.

Easy, it's a shoulderpad. Should be a few on the sprue :)

The Elves with the masks are my favourite.

its a little big though. made me second guess and post...

VanHel

Yeah, definitely a shoulder pad. Look at the pictured elf's shield arm and you'll see a matching one.

They could just be extra armour bits, so that each person can personalize their Elves, if they want too. Don't think they have to be limited to the shoulders, but might be able to work on other places on the body. But I agree that the shoulders make the most sense.

wow, very nice, just wondering, but could you throw up a pic of them alonfside a normal WFB regiment?, just for size comparrison

These minis are definately interesting. I am looking forward to seeing the comparison to normal GW minis.

Lord Azoth
09-12-2009, 09:58
they are slightly smaller than GW, but the main difference is that they are very very thin and better proportioned than GW so the look even smaller...

I think if you make an entire army from mantic it will look cool, but mixing them with GW may look a bit weird...

Looking good dooode. Can I suggest a black undercoat, the gold will be easier to paint over the top :) Advice on the washes? devlan mud and/or gryphonne sepia over the top; devlan mud will give it some great shading, and the sepia would give it a really antique look. Keep it away from the shield if you want it white though.

i basecoat any bronze with schorched brown. it makes the bronze cover extremely well.

will be doing delvan then.

also been drawing up scheme plans for stormwind cavalry.

It's actually quite cool to finally see a project log using some of the new Mantic Games Elves...to be honest, I quite like them, and can definitely picture myself painting some up in the near future even though I'm rather deeply busy with my hundreds of Skaven at the moment. They're looking great, by the way, and I can't wait to see more!

Hmmm, I do believe I'm going to get my hands on a boxed set or two of them and give them a go. Thanks for the inspiration!

just got back from christmas vacation (7 days, i still have a week off school) and picked up my order at my FLGS: a bolt thrower battery and a sea guard regiment. i also picked up some flock.

i plan to work my ass off this week on two things:

my backlog of GW mini's

my mantic elves

expect updates.

i flocked all 8 completed spearmen just now. it was wierd though. i'm used to just dipping the models in sand after applying pva glue and shaking the excess back into the container. the flock was in clumps, so i had to get a sheep out to put under the model, apply pva, and then slowly sprinkle the flock onto the pva via disentangling the clump.

could anyone give me tips on basing with flock?

Hey Marcus. Just checked out Nightswords project log and saw yours here. Yeah, you have a few models to catch up on, but trust me, that's a drop in the pond compared to what us old timers have buried away.:shifty:

And posting a video blog... Well, you're a braver man than me.

lord marcus
30-01-2010, 19:18
hehe.... i try darsc. i try. actually thats just troops, i have several character/display models, as well as a host of other things to do.

speaking of which, would you care about this guys hand when it came to gaming. i had to graft an amputated arm so he could have a full set, and my knife went rough-shod over the fine detail of the hand.

If you're going to use that figure as rank and file, then just paint him up and place him in the middle of the unit. It'll be hard to notice there's anything wrong with him.

lord marcus
31-01-2010, 22:14
he's actually a crewman for a bolt thrower. i think since hes gonna be so far back on the table it will be hard to notice.

Quick question. I've noticed the parts on the elven sprue seem pretty delicate and I'm guessing fragile. What did you use to remove the pieces from the sprue? A knife or model clippers? Did you have any problems removing them?

Normally I've used model clippers with GW plastics, but Mantics seem more delicate.

lord marcus
27-02-2010, 20:33
clippers, but thats because I was building them for the speed challenge. usually i use a mix of clippers and modeling knife. the only real thing you have to watch out for is the weapons and the arms. i nearly cut a bow in half the other day.

correct orlanth, although I don't use it much (same with my 10 D10)
