View Full Version : Decadent Host of Inevitable Excess

The Decadent Host is my Slaanesh tourney army - finally complete and ready for table. The Changling I've posted in another thread is the first expansion to bring it from 2250 (shown here) to a 2500 point list (It will involve a block of horrors as well, of course).

I managed to snap these table shots today before company comes over for Christmas eve, but I'll have to get close up unit pics after the holiday when I can get the rig out and shoot them properly. Apologies for the only passable-quality images.

Lovely army and nice display board! I don't think I've seen one as a work in progress at the planning stage. Makes it seem easier to do than it seems.

Looking forward to the completed base!

Thank you! This is my second display board - the first I put together for my High Elves over a weekend as it was a requirement for the tournament I was going to and it's a lot larger and heavier than it needed to be. They're actually really pretty easy to do and you can get the large sheets of the blue foam from hardware stores relatively cheap.

The most important part in my experience is just knowing where you want things to be when you display them. I set my figs out on my table, get a sense for the size of the board, cut and glue the foam to it and then set the army up on the foam and trace their locations. Where I am here is after making sure I was satisfied with the deployment as it were, I started cutting into the negative space and I've filled the channels with Black Lava filler. I'll spray the whole thing black tomorrow and start to painting.

At the moment, my flashy bits are the altar (which is not attached so I can also use it as a terrain feature and make it easier to transport the board) and the front right corner I'm going to model a scollwork banner in sculpy for the army title. I may also do some freehand painting in the center as I'll have a bunch of negative space if only the 2250 is displayed; I needed to leave room for the additional unit of horrors when I go to 2500 for the GW store tourney starting in Feb.

I definitely encourage people to give making these things a try - they look great with a finished army deployed and ready for display! Given that I had the extra foam on hand from my High Elf board and the wood underneath was sitting around in my shed, the total cost for this project was exactly $0.

Very nice! No indentions on the board so the trays can fit in without any risk of sliding?

I like your portal, however, I would go for a color closer to pink/purple. BUT it matches the board's lava-like theme.

I didn't in-set the units because I may need for it to also accommodate the list going from 2250 to 2500 next month for another game. I may set it at that time; haven't decided yet.

This is the best shot I can get of the freehand - the flash reflects off the black too much:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_6bObCV2ffEg/S0FmGZp7CqI/AAAAAAAAAgk/E0x8tT-mZz8/s640/IMG_6241.JPG

I haven't played Slaanesh in tourneys but in my local group it does pretty well. The army is king of maneuverability and that's really half the battle in my opinion. Really though, I played an all Slaanesh Chaos army before they broke the books apart, so this is me staying true to my roots as it were. :)

I had that same exact debate in my head when I did it, but decided to match it to the board instead of the figs to make it stand out more. I'm not 100% happy with the way the portal looks so I might go back at fiddle with it later but for now it's ready for showtime.

My pleasure, Breazer.

Yeah, I'm still torn about the cheese factor of mixed Daemon armies - I think each God is much better balanced in their own strengths and weaknesses; but all that went out the door the moment you could fill from each God's units to ensure there WERE no weaknesses, only strengths. I may be less tournament competitive than a mixed host but I think the army feels more 'right' to me.

Fluff used to be about the gods always at odds with each other and scheming against one another - not sure why that all got tossed out the window aside from an effort to sell more figures, alas.

Update:

The tourney this weekend was great fun and to my great delight my army tied for best army for Warhammer fantasy. I got a lot of great feedback from other players and from the judges so I'm feeling very content with the way this all turned out.

I have the unit of horrors for the 2500 expansion mostly modeled at this point, I'll post pics once I have them based and ready for painting.

It's been a while since I updated here so wanted to show some of the more recent stuff I've done on the army.

I needed to add another 500 points to the list and to keep things viable it meant starting to let a few more non-Slaanesh units into the army, but I wanted to keep the same flavor. I've added a unit of Fleshhounds of Khorne, but I wanted to convert them into Pleasurehounds of Slaanesh. Took a basic warhound kit and used a little greenstuff to bulk out their bodies, add scales and some armor that mirrored that of the Daemonettes.

Also, special characters are not allowed in the tourney I'm prepping for, so the Masque and Changeling had to come out. Needed to add a Herald of Tzeentch to replace them. This started with an old beastman body that I've added some wings to, custom-sculpted the head, taloned claws and an appropriately Tzeentch-like staff. The wings are from a reaper bits pack.

Thanks MM! The hounds are sealed and on the shelf and I've got the herald primed now. I've been pushing further on my Golden Daemon entry, so he and the unit of Flamers I picked up will have to wait for a bit for more love (or until I burn out of focus again).

I finished the Herald - sat down and cranked him out to be ready for the tourney this coming weekend. Pretty happy with the final result - let me know what you guys think:

Quick update: The updated Host took best painted army in last weekend's 2500pt Fantasy tourney and placed 5th overall. I'm doing a few tweaks and adds for the coming month; more on that soon.

I got the inspiration to complete my unit of flamers last night and this afternoon - shots below. Not sure if they'll make it into a 2250, but I've got a 2500 list that works them in. I tried to keep the spirit of them being flamers while still using enough of the army's color scheme to tie them in coherently.

He's actually painted, but it was a bit of a rush job to have him ready for a game. I'll try to get a pic up soon, though I'm not really overly pleased with it.

Unfortunately, between trying to finish up my entry for Golden Daemon this year AND working on other new items for the army I just haven't gotten back around to the Changeling's touch-ups/repaint. He's sitting on my painting table with an accusatory look on his beak...

Lesson learned the hard way - when cutting/filing things like blades for your sculpts, use proper plasticard as opposed to any random sheet plastic. Just lost several hours worth of work cutting and filing this KoS' sword because the thing snapped right in two.

Keeper of Secrets scratch-built is about 75% done with the sculpt.Just need to finish the hands, claws and hooves, then add some details for additional polish.

I'll have pics up once the sculpt is finished and before painting.

Seraph74

It's finally done - my new Keeper of Secrets sculpt is finished. He's quite a bit more imposing than the GW fig and more to scale in my opinion based on the fluff shot from the High Elf book (I based his features on this one as it's my favorite rendition of the Keeper). The model is a wireframe and sculpy core, the majority of the sculpting is greenstuff with a few bits from a Trygon for interior claws and the armor plates; the swordblade is plasticard. The slicing shards spell he's casting is a bunch of dark elf spear heads I've chopped up.

Definitely appreciate any feedback!

I think they look the part. The only issue you have with them is that they're not sculpted by you so at this unpainted stage they stand out like a sore thumb but once you get paint on them they'll fit right in with the feel of the 'mini'!

Seraph74
29-06-2010, 19:03
Yeah, they definitely settle in better with color on them - I was just so very gung ho about sculpting the whole thing but got the inspiration to use the bits... I think it was the right choice in the end. :)

That thing is an absolute BEAST! I'm most often a fan of the original KoS model for pure nostalgia (and I actually think it's a really good sculpt with loads of character - not with the squid head, mind you...), but this one is just plain more awesome. I think you made a good decision basing it off the KoS in the HE artwork, as you're still in the realms of the official fluff, so it looks like it could be a new GW model really... I've seen loads of KoS conversions that look good but are missing that special warhammer vibe, and yours certainly got it. Kudos to creating such a nice model!

Cheers,
BTB

Seraph74
05-07-2010, 21:46
Thanks for the great feedback guys, I appreciate the comments!

@Nesbet - I was hard-pressed to find a good rock to work with for the base; I needed something that would extend the stance of the model but still balance correctly on the standard 50mm large monster base. I think once I get it painted and the lava effect working it might play a little better visually.

@BtB - My problem with the original KoS sculpt is that it's a bit bovine to me; with Slaanesh, everything should be slinky, seductive and sinew-y in my mind. I wanted this guy to be immediately identifiable as a Keeper and the HE fluff shot has just always been my favorite image of a KoS in any of the GW stuff I've seen over the years.

He's about 75% painted at this point. I'm doing detail work and depending on how caught up on it I get, it may either finish quick or linger on. In any case, I need him ready for a tournament on the 31st this month, so need to get it done as soon as I can.

Thanks!

I have to say im not too keen on whatever is coming out of his left hand. Least of all i would consider painting it in a different colour, so it doesn't clash with the sword. Pehaps even get rid of it altogether, it doesn't suit the model.

Stunning model otherwise.

That is awesome! The freehand on the sword is great. Please let us know what peoples reaction to this beastie was in person.
As to the left hand, I dont mind it, but I think the "sword tips"? would look more striking if they transitioned into a colder colour the further they got from the palm of his hand.

Cheers, Bard

Excellent sculpting! i love the pose, its very dinamyc and you managed to integrate many different elements. I think the painting is very effective and i do like the chaos thunderbolts or whatever he is holding, tough I dare say those yellows could use some red tones to make them look more vibrant

He's supposed to be casting Slicing Shards of Slaanesh. They did pop a bit more yellow in the pic as opposed to RL, it seems.

I think that might actually be too impressive for a mere KoS - it saddens me to think some measly Skaven Warlord might manage to knock him off in a duel. Only thing I'm not a fan of is the choice of colour for the spell and sword - I think a pastel 'fleshy' colour like pale pink, violet or bone might have given a more Slaaneshi feel, though I appreciate it's part of your colour scheme.

Honestly, with ASF and I10, I expect the KoS to be even better in 8th ed. Alas, the new true LOS rules are going to penalize me for making him bigger but hey, what can you do?

I hear what you're saying Spetswalshe, there definitely was some thought about keeping to the pastel palette. I wanted a contrasting color to really make the sword pop against the blues and purples. I think a fleshy color might have faded a bit too much overall; my goal was to create a triangle of spot color between the hands and his eyes.

Hey Spets - in an ironic twist, I played a Skaven list turn two and went right in against a Skaven Warlord on a Rat Ogre bonebreaker with the Keeper. Killed the rat dead and broke his unit, then ran it down. I'm entirely convinced it was his sexy new look that ensured his victory. ;)

Hello all! It's been a while and I realized I never posted any of the updates I made to this army for the 2011 tourney season. It was recently featured in the Augury section of August's White Dwarf (the 2000 point version that I brought to Throne of Skulls) and a few people asked for some better detail shots so I figured it was easiest to update this thread.

The biggest block added was my Bloodletter block - wardaemons enslaved to the Keeper's will. You can see Slaneesh's lashmarks on the backs of their hides, binding the into service:
