So I spent all day painting my first Cryx model, Bane Lord Tartarus, only to realize I won't have access to a decent camera for a few days... but my whole motivation for finishing him was to stick him on here, so it looks like I'll have to do with showing you guys a crappy camera phone teaser shot. Anyway the theme for the army is going to be light effects and weathered bronze.

03-01-2010, 12:06
That looks awesome, even with the lo-fi image! I really like the Cryx models, seems like you've done a good job!

What other models do you have?

03-01-2010, 15:50
Thanks a lot man! Thats not actually my first Warmachine model. I've got a Goreshade the Bastard that I painted a couple years ago, which isn't really up to my current standards, so I need to strip him and repaint. I also have the Cryx jack that digs under ground. As soon as I get some disposable income I'm going to buy the starter box. I want to build my army around bane thralls and bane knights and a couple jacks.

07-01-2010, 16:28
Here are some higher res pictures of Tartarus, now that I got access to a camera again. Hope you like him!

I don't know how long it will be before I post again as I'm heading off to college and will have to find someone with a camera that i can borrow.

07-01-2010, 16:32
Really nice so far - its not the nicest model (I own it too) but your work is impressive.

08-01-2010, 16:06
Thanks man, I actually converted him a little because I hated how he looked at first too. I cut him in the middle with a hack saw and then bent him forward into a pose that I think is a lot better then the stock model.

14-01-2010, 18:20
Very nice effect on Tartarus. Look forward to seeing more.

14-01-2010, 19:51
Menacing with deliciously creepy green lighting effects. Well done.

14-01-2010, 21:22
Wow! I'm very impressed with the cool, spooky glow paint job on this guy! Makes me want to dig my Cryx out and finish painting them.

14-01-2010, 23:40
That is a very cool painting job man! it looks so well...
love to see some more of your work man.

16-01-2010, 10:43
that looks rather cool there....very cool lighting effects....hope to see more soon...if you can find that camera that is

16-01-2010, 11:29
Looking great! Could we get some bigger pics, though? It's hard to make out the details... I got my first Warmachine mini for Christmas - a Bloat Thrall. Haven't started on it yet, but I'm certainly looking forward to! ;)

Monsterzonk :skull:

18-01-2010, 21:22
Ok bigger pics, I also highlighted the glow effect some more, any ideas for improvements?

30-01-2010, 21:54
Goreshade the "Born out of wedlock". I think I'm improving a little at the mini painting thing. I've been doing it for 13 years, its about time!

Goreshade and Tartarus: Best Friends FoReveR!!!!!

31-01-2010, 10:43
Looking great! The glow effect is really cool and mean looking! Nice work!

Monsterzonk :skull:

31-01-2010, 16:31
that source lighting is so well done...those will look great on the table mike....keep it up

31-01-2010, 17:07
Your mini's look superb!
They've got a great broody atmosphere about em.
Top notch work!

31-01-2010, 17:15
Goreshade and Tartarus: Best Friends FoReveR!!!!!

Nice OSL, together with the weathered bronze makes for a very gloomy cryxian feeling.

01-02-2010, 18:20
realy like those pp models was thinking of doing some skorne after seeing them at a club at the weekend your painting really brings out the undead feeling of the cryx fantastic will have to keep an eye on this subscribed

Magos Explorator
01-02-2010, 19:32
The glow effect is great, very atmospheric painting all-round.

01-02-2010, 20:52
Okay, your OSL is officially so good that I had to squint to make sure you didn't have a light actually shining from it (that makes more sense in my head, trust me).

I will say that I'm tempted to model a BFF necklace pair on Goreshade and Tartarus.

01-02-2010, 21:32
Thanks guys, really is motivating to keep working.

15-02-2010, 18:37
Nothing short of amazing! Your OSL is superb - some of the most realistic I have seen yet. The muted colours fit the minis very well too...

15-02-2010, 18:43
Thanks, I gotta admit though, I brightened it in photoshop since I dont have a light box, and that made the whites stick out more in the pictures than they do in real life which enhanced the effect... I kind of feel bad... :(

29-08-2010, 22:19
Ok, new set. Thanks go out to my good friend Dan who has an comedy/art internet show I figure I should point you guys to in thanks for taking these pics.

I think I gave myself too much of a disservice with the last pics. These are unphotoshopped except for cropping. They still look pretty good (Go Dan!).

Tartarus again as well as Goreshade:

New guy, Helldiver:

Group shot:

Off to try and make a .gif, thanks so much for looking.

30-08-2010, 09:18
the helldiver looks good nice to see you doing your cryx again i just hope its not another 6 months before your next post

30-08-2010, 14:11
Love the moody effect on Tartarus. RISE! :)

30-08-2010, 18:38
Don't worry. They still look amazing :)

IMHO, the more subdued effect on Tartarus is the best. Sooo menacing and cool!

31-08-2010, 03:02
Thanks for the postive feedback! Ill be working on these guys a lot more in the future. Also, I made a .gif. Poorly, but still.
Ill fix it AM.

01-09-2010, 11:03
You'll need to do one with its buried fin as well :)

03-09-2010, 11:30
Nice job on the OSL.
It'll be great to see more of your mini's as you do them. Subbed!!

03-09-2010, 13:15
Thanks again. It means a lot to me when I get attention on these forums. I'll try and spread the comment love asap.

18-10-2010, 04:53
Bane thrall officer. Back to old camera, but I hope it suffices.

18-10-2010, 14:29
Awesome! I'm loving the glow effect. Reminds me a bit of the Moonlight Necromancer by foot_of_adhesive_tape (http://tabletopgeeks.com/interview-foot_of_adhesive_tape-andrew-mosen/).

18-10-2010, 17:30
very nice do like your cryx the glow on the face is cool

18-10-2010, 18:49
Really nice paint job on rather bad mini!

The corrosion effect on the armour looks really good.

It's also nice to see a more subdued glow effect for variety. You're still amazing at it though ;)

19-10-2010, 11:29
Thanks guys. Its amazing how much enjoyment I get out of receiving comments on this website.

24-10-2010, 23:14
Better Pic.

Bought the 2010 Iron Lich today. Gotta decide how to glow effect him past what the company already did. Also pretty close to finished on the Standard Bearer.

24-10-2010, 23:22
Dude, awesome glow on those! And the colors looks really really evil! WHy have i missed these guys?

CHeers Kaos

24-10-2010, 23:30
Getting you to comment on my plog, Kaos, is only a few steps under the time I hung out with Opeth on their tour bus. I shamefully must accept my fanboy status.

25-10-2010, 10:49
Was there a constant green/purple mist in there? I can only imagine how their tour bus would look like on the inside haha..

I have never quite come to terms with Opeth.. I do not know why. Its good music mixed with boring music.. perhaps thatīs it? :P

25-10-2010, 12:29
;) There was some kind of mist in there. They were my favorite band at the time. I know some people don't like them for being goth or too mellow at points. Currently I'm into Judas Priest again. Halford just released a new album.

25-10-2010, 15:06
I can see this one now as the old version just wouldn't load for me. Nice effect on the armour and good evil glow as usual.

25-10-2010, 19:49
Thanks Keravin. Here is my layout for the glow effect on Asphyxious. Thinking about making his left hand glow too, but that is probably overkill.

Kind of like darth maul's lightsaber.

Gonna finish Bane Thrall Standard Bearer real soon.

26-10-2010, 20:06
Bane Thrall Standard Bearer

OH SNAP IT'S ALL THE BANES! (This picture pleases me.)

I think I need to do 'facing' marks on the base. Also I'm going to gloss them like I did on Tartarus there. Any ideas on the Iron Liche? I'm still iffy about what's going to glow. Greenstuff fireball in open hand?

26-10-2010, 22:40
the banes are cool mate love the rusty armour and glowy faces

if i were you i'd have gaspy's left hand glow and that side of the body the spear tip just looks to bold and in your face takes the eye of him and more on the spear and personaly i'd rather people be looking at the body and face first

27-10-2010, 14:01
Wow, nice thread!
I agree about the glowyness.
Maybe tone the spear down, but add in glowing from his hand. You could maybe bend his arm down a little so the OSL would be hitting him from below, in true Bad Guy fashion.

28-10-2010, 01:52
I think you guys are right about the hand needing to glow instead of the spear. I'll definitely do it that way. Sculpt a fireball in there too?

Played my first game tonight. Learned a lot. Mainly Tartarus can't take down a heavy war beast by himself. Also Privateer Press is sending me the Deathwalker that I'm missing so that's in the line up.

28-10-2010, 02:14
Tartarus never looked so good. It is truly amazing to see such work; the bottom-up glow effect is powerfully convincing. Keep it up, mdiscala, we can't wait to see more!

28-10-2010, 12:12
Your use of the semicolon, AbandonHopeAllYeWhoEnter., is also powerfully convincing.

15-11-2010, 21:59
Well I've been on a commenting bender since I got the flu last week, so I thought now that I'm better I'd better post something. Thanks for the comments guys.

Went with the glowing hand. I think its alright. Does it need more work maybe? Let me know.

15-11-2010, 22:04
looks good like the glow it would look awsome with some flame in his hand

15-11-2010, 22:22
Yeah I'm thinking it needs a little more work looking at it now. The flame would be a good idea basher.

16-11-2010, 01:47
Damn man, those are some seriously impressive glow effects, the metal looks excellent, great work all around!

16-11-2010, 08:43
lovely OSL there! Coupled with the aged metallics... very impressive!

17-11-2010, 09:32
Wow, the glow effect on these models is awesome. I agree that he could do with some flame in his hand to make him look even more bad ass.

Inspiring stuff mate, I look forward to seeing more!

17-11-2010, 09:51
Haven't commented here in quite a while! Love your work! The OSL effects look really cool. I agree that Asphyxious needs a litte more work. Maybe a light green wash between the fingers to make it look like the light is shining through? It's hard to tell from the angle. Could we get a shot from behind so we can see the palm, since that's where the glow is coming from?

Monsterzonk :skull:

17-11-2010, 12:23
Thanks guys. Yeah he definitely needs some more work done. I was in a rush to post something on here I guess... After comparing him to my other big light effect guys he seems very unfinished. So going to model a flame in his hand maybe or at least put some more effort into the reflected light. Ill see what I can do about that other picture monsterzonk. I'm off to class right now though.

*EDIT: I'm going to wait till I rework him to post anymore pics. I'm not at all happy with him after I held him up next to goreshade and tartarus.

17-11-2010, 23:02
Ok now I'm happy. Went and did the work I needed to do to get the effect like it should be. Used what I've learned.

Iron Lich Asphyxious

Decided not to do the flames, and I used Monsterzonk's idea with the glow through the fingers. Good thought there man.

Abraham Danglebreech
18-11-2010, 00:02
Nice. Very, very nice.

18-11-2010, 05:46
Look brilliant mate!

25-11-2010, 14:41
I like it!

25-11-2010, 15:29
Absolutely stunning work! Keep it up!

11-12-2010, 20:46
Thanks so much guys. Heres the best pic I could get of the slayer. I might rework him a bit... We'll see.

http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/8799/slayers.jpg (http://img257.imageshack.us/i/slayers.jpg/)

11-12-2010, 21:17
oooooooooooh that looks cool, although it does look a bit skinny in the pic really like the glowing head

12-12-2010, 03:04
Wanted to do a group shot.

http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/5599/grouip.jpg (http://img600.imageshack.us/i/grouip.jpg/)

13-12-2010, 22:17
looks good i love the minimum colour palette you use gives your force real cohearance

13-12-2010, 23:38
Thanks basher, much privateer press plog love.

14-12-2010, 07:26
I can only agree with basher. The limited palette looks really good with the sinister Cryx minis, and it enhances the OSL very well...

14-01-2011, 20:56
Pistol Wraith. Made it so one eye is glowing like he's sighting down the barrel

14-01-2011, 21:03
wow big pics. looks good my man like the one eye idea

16-01-2011, 03:12
The armour and clothes provide good contrast with the glowing green and really accentuate the affect. Very nice, easily the best-looking WarMaHordes force I've seen yet.

16-01-2011, 11:12
The one eye's a cool idea. Love Pistol wraiths in all their forms.

16-01-2011, 17:22
Thanks basher, lorelorn, Keravin and I forgot to thank Hrafn from last time.

@basher: yeah probably too big pics but lesson learned, that size will be reserved for group shots in the future

@lorelorn: Thanks so much man. Very high praise, makes me proud, and I will try to keep it up.

17-01-2011, 09:38
I really like your Cryx force. Great contrast between the drab grey robes, the oxidized bronze, and the green OSL! Looking awesome!

Monsterzonk :skull:

01-02-2011, 00:28
Thanks Monsterzonk.

Spent all day Saturday working on my Cryx, got three bonejacks and a Seether painted. I did some water effects on them, but I made the mistake of spray sealing over that and it ruined the effect a little, oh well.

Bone Jacks:

My 25 point group for a local league:

01-02-2011, 04:53
Looking good! I've just become interested in War Machine and Hordes and I'm digging these guys. The lighting is just fantastic.

01-02-2011, 06:54
Oooh, nice!

Loving your corroded bronze look. Really. Had considered trying something similiar myself. But now you've done it to perfection, so I won't bother trying :p

01-02-2011, 07:12
Hey Mike D-

That corroded metal is it- can you do a model with a tutorial? I would love to use it for some nurgle chaos figs.

01-02-2011, 16:46
@vorthain: Its a real fun game, I haven't played 8th ed. Warhammer, but its loads better than 7th.

@Hrafn: well the only reason I thought of it was seeing people do it on this website, so it won't be like your stealing it from me since I stole it from other people. You could always do a combination of corroded metals with different colors, like instead of making the whole jack verdigrised bronze, make part of it rusty orange Iron. Would be unique.

@Maskedman5oh4: Definitely man. Might be a while, I go long periods btw/ painting.

01-02-2011, 17:03
Very nice work, I'm really impressed and might try this out for myself sometime in the near future.

To that end, I have a question: When you go for extreme OSL like you did, do you start out by painting the model like normal and then add the OSL or do you start with it from the ... euh, start?

Thanks in advance!

01-02-2011, 17:25
@ Dourin: I paint the model normally, part of my process is to drybrush (which would be looked down upon by some) on the cast light. So as you get further and further away from the source of the light, you keep less paint on your brush allowing the color of the part of the model having light cast on it to show through. I also sometimes but down a dark green wash at the edge of the cast light and then go back over it with the base color. Its not an exact process.

01-02-2011, 17:27
love the little group shot the seether's cool.Just finished my bloodgorgers on top of some commishion work i'd been roped into so should get on to mine soon

06-02-2011, 17:29
Thanks basher, looking forward to seeing your Seether.

Heres a tutorial:
1. Clean off the flash and prime it black

2. Give the parts you want to look weathered bronze thick drybrush of Dwarf Bronze.

3. Smather (technical term) him with a pretty significantly watered down coat of Hawk Turquoise, you cant really do too thick of a coat though, (you could probably start from a base coat of blue if you wanted). I'm thinking right now the best consistency is where it is just starting to, not only seep into the cracks, but coat the flat areas slightly.

4. Then I randomly apply different colors to the bronze, this phase is still kind of experimental, but for this I'll dab on Scorched Brown, and Bleached Bone to different areas. I'm basically simulating dirt and grime as apposed to the blue which is simulating verdigris. This stage can be thicker than you might think because one of the last steps is to go over the model with Dwarf Bronze again. Also in this step add some non watered down Hawk Turquoise to areas you think got covered up too much.

5. Now do a very light dry brush of Dwarf Bronze in areas you don't want to be weathered. After that, do a extremely light dry brush of Mithril Silver. The Mithril Silver should barely be visible, its supposed to simulate light hitting the raised areas, not to simulate areas of the model that are silver. If at some point during this step he starts to get too shiny for your tastes, go back and add some more dirt or verdigris, or even some black wash if you want.

Ok, thats the four pic limit so Ill post now and keep working. I think I'm going to apply Badab Black to this guy since he has so many cracks and it would look good differentiating them, besides that the armor is done, next its the bone and the glow effect.

06-02-2011, 19:15
6.This is after a Badab Black wash: Here is the base coat of the bone and the glow effects, I need to wait till I finish the bone on the face and then Ill get started on the eye glow. For all the vents and holes I used a watered down Scorpion Green to fill them in. This leaves a bit of green on top which I need to go back and fix. The bone is just Bleached Bone.

7. I added Gryphonne Sepia wash to the bone and dry brushed Scorched brown over the vents and holes leaving them with the green on the inside. While I had the Gryphonne Sepia out I splashed some on the armor too.

8. Finished the bone up with a highlight of Bleached Bone to Skull White on top. Went back and fixed where I dropped in the watered down Green using the same techniques I did earlier. When I had the Bleached Bone out I added some more streaks of it to the armor.

9. Now just gotta do the eyes and base him, the eyes aren't as hard as they may look. So since he's got goggles on you have to account for the edges of the goggles blocking some of the light. A. So first I do a base dry brush of scorpion green wherever I think the light is going to hit. in this case the sides of his big mandibles and the tips of his lower mandibles, and then I did a bit on his cheeks too. B. Then I want to define his eyes from the rest so I do a bit of a wash of dark green, I've got an orc flesh wash from a decade ago, but I imagine Dark Angels Green would work here. I also use this color to do shadows inside an area that is getting light cast on it, and for bigger light effects I use it at the edge of the cast light. C. At this point its just a reaplication of Scorpion Green over areas you don't want the Green Wash to hit. A smaller application of Scorpion Green mixed with white and a dot of white in the middle of the eyes.

Now I'm getting tired so Ill base him and spray him later, just word to the wise, use some gloss coat on his spikes and other protruding bits before you matte coat him since they are the parts most likely to get worn down. Too tired to proof read so forgive any errors. Looking at these pictures I'm probably going to go back and fiddle with the colors before I finish him off, add some more blue, maybe try and get the green in the holes a little better, etc.

06-02-2011, 22:01
And the finished product:

And just for fun a shot of him with Asphyxious as in the game the Cankerworm is his pet jack.

06-02-2011, 22:20
well done mate, fast way of painting cool tutorial

09-02-2011, 02:03
That's pretty cool.
Nice tutorial!

14-02-2011, 13:45
Thanks Basher and Dayspringer! Heres a Khador guy. I'm painting him for my best friend since he is pretty into playing but doesnt want to paint. More than happy to do that. Unfortunately this guy is going to get ruined, when I hit whomever rated this thread a 3 with him! ILL FIND YOU! Cough, cough...

http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/1461/khador1.jpg (http://img571.imageshack.us/i/khador1.jpg/)

17-02-2011, 13:04
Nice tutorial, covers all the steps and what a great result at the end! I also like your Khador guy, nice to see those models away from their usual red.

Unfortunately this guy is going to get ruined, when I hit whomever rated this thread a 3 with him! ILL FIND YOU! Cough, cough...

Yeah, that sucks. Have a well-earned five from me. Someone swung by my own thread about a week ago and gave it a two star :cries:, so if you don't mind I'll have a go with the jack after you're done...

17-02-2011, 17:31
never looked at my rating you got a five from me mate

17-02-2011, 18:29
Wow, your stuff looks sweet! I just started a Cryx force last weekend (well only technically started as I haven't bought any models yet :D) Your OSL looks absolutely amazing. You've inspired me to push the envelope with my skills and try it myself (though perhaps with purple light). Damn, now I have to go get models *shakes fist

17-02-2011, 21:36
Excellent painting mdiscala. I think these are the best miniatures you have painted to date. A resounding 5 stars from me, and well deserved.

18-02-2011, 19:09
Great effort with the tutorial! Thumbs up from here :)

Cankerworm is nice indeed. I only wish the mini wasn't sculpted with those silly goggles. Would look much cooler without them :(

19-02-2011, 19:18
Thanks for boosting my fragile miniature log ego guys

@lorelorn: He's got some serious weight to him. You may want to carry him when walking through sketchy neighborhoods at night, after you reap your vengeance on the thread rating bomber of course.

@basher: Thank you sir

@pointyteeth: Can't wait to see em mister

@lilloser2010: Cheers man.

@Hrafn: Yeah the goggles are silly but the glow effect kind of washes out that detail a little

29-05-2011, 21:11
Now to continue my entering of a feverish nerd mode since spring semester ended (I hope there isn't a bad come down). Here are two more Khador Jacks. By the way, these guys are based on the Russian's WWII winter camo.

Now bring me comments and criticism for the motherland!

30-05-2011, 15:51
i havn't shamed you into posting have i been a while.

Only criticisum is i dont like khador jacks but yours look good in white are you using gw snow for them bases

30-05-2011, 16:33
Yeah, basher, you totally shamed me... You know now that I think about it there is a good chance there is some truth in that, as I my painting cycle does usually begin with me heavily haunting the fantasy painting logs until I get motivated to paint, and you do keep a steady output. Also was that a drunk plog comment?

Yeah GW snow. Like three layers per base to make it look fluffy.

30-05-2011, 21:27
Awesome stuff in here. I'm pretty new to warmachine and just have seen the factions' classical colours out there. Espescially the marauder and the green gloomy Cryx kick butts!!

31-05-2011, 17:31
Embaressing moment: this log has been a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine for a while (except those few months without access). I enjoy the OSL so much on these guys. I know absolutely nothing about Warmachine, but I do like the pretty colours! The green OSL is done to perfection.

If anything, I think the Khador Jacks could use a little work on their armour. Maybe some sort of camo on there? But then that wouldn't fit with the Russian theme... Hmm...
Okay! How about a muted green tone with a whitewash on top? Using salt weathering or sponging or something? I think it just needs a little extra for the large flat plates.

31-05-2011, 18:21

Yeah I like to buck the system with color schemes for sure. Thanks!

YEESSSSSSSS!!! GUILTY PLEASURE!!!!! You should get into this game, every army is like an Ogre army, in that there aren't that many models so you can go to town on the paint jobs. Plus you'll give PP plogs some needed Warseer cred. Probably not going to mess with Khador guys. Pretty happy with them and they are for a friend anyway, who thinks they are awesome. Plus the pics are like 2x magnification so its not like its such a huge area of white IRL anyway.

31-05-2011, 19:00
no i wasn't drunk just a bit tipsy

31-05-2011, 19:23
haha, yeah I realized you never put too much punctuation in your posts, but I never had any trouble reading them till that one. Then I went back to your other posts, and while I read them no problem before, couldn't read them that easily either. I think I've lost the ability. Probably just temporarily.

31-05-2011, 22:50
Yeh i know my punctuation's not the best, neither is my spelling but i do try, Didn't have much of an education just put full stops in when i feel like it:D. Just take a deep breath before you start.

06-06-2011, 13:52
Will do basher. Heres Zerkova and a group shot:

06-06-2011, 22:48
Both armies are coming along really nicely. Love the alternatice Khador scheme. Just started playing Warmachine (Khador) myself and loving it so far. Keep up the great work.

07-06-2011, 02:04
Thank you sir. Going to paint a Menoth and Cygnar as well, actually I should probably change the name of the log. Going to have three friends play who I'm going to paint for.

07-06-2011, 14:41
Nice Zerkova. Her rod's a bit bent though. Poor girl has all the problems - horse face, bent rod :)

07-06-2011, 17:24
god she looks like my auntie

07-06-2011, 17:54
Keravin: I don't think its a rod. Its a dragon tooth or something. About the horse face, I'd still take her out for a nice seafood dinner and then not call her afterwards.

Basher: I'd like to meet that Auntie.

07-06-2011, 18:54
It's definitely a rod. Rod of Whispers - look on her card.

07-06-2011, 23:49
Well Ill be, it isn't a dragons tooth, its a bent rod. Youre right.

11-06-2011, 04:11
Alright, beginning of a Cygnar force:

13-06-2011, 00:32
That charger is absolutely gorgeous... in a brutal, big robot with a gun kinda way. Love the eyes. Trying to convince my bro to start cygnar, mainly cos he hates painting so I'd get to paint them.

13-06-2011, 01:40
Thanks Tiny. Its actually a lot of fun painting them. May be because I haven't painted a good guy in forever.

13-06-2011, 14:13
First two Khador Widowmakers:

14-06-2011, 12:54

16-06-2011, 20:18
Uh oh, triple pic post... "Comment to me!" (Said in Bela Legosi Dracula voice)

Last WidowMakers finished:

And group shot:

16-06-2011, 22:25
I like a lot the metal undead, the glowing effect its great, it gives the miniature a disturbing look, that fits them perfectly.

I think that i would play warmachine i would had chose a crix army

18-06-2011, 18:13
Thanks ekxw, get into Warmachine, I'd like to see you paint them.

Heres the test model for Menoth:

20-06-2011, 09:29
Interested to see how that develops as I will probably start a Menoth force myself later this year.

Also I really like that Khador winter scheme, easily the best painting of that faction I've seen.

21-06-2011, 21:00
My friend will be happy to hear that about the Khador, lorelorn, I told him the internet likes my Cryx scheme better than the Khador one and, while I painted it, he came up with the colors.

Well heres the next Menoth:

21-06-2011, 21:08
i like your menoth sceam still not sure about the khador but i thimk thats just because i dont like khador that much.

Warrior of Chaos
29-06-2011, 03:32
Wow that glow effect is way cool! I a bit too much of an amateur at this point to give it a shot. Think I'd just screw up the model. But it is something to strive for!

29-06-2011, 08:35
Every time I read in your blog I want to paint more steam-punkt stuff :-). But I'm happy that I could finish my Cygnar starter between my TK goodness :-).

Before I forget: your winter-theme is absolutly stunning! :-)

08-07-2011, 14:16
I'm really loving your take on the faction colour schemes, mdiscala, particularly the wintery white-ish Khador...it really, really works and gives them a super unique look amongst all the other red Khador you typically see. Now, I happen to be a fan of Khador red, but when it comes to your white Khador dudes, they'd even look awesome when put next to a typical red Khador 'Jack, especially if it was nicely battle-damaged and "chipped", and perhaps even had a light dusting of snow on it.

So many awesome looking minis here, my friend, amazing work. I'm no Khador player(Skorne through and through, for me...), but I've always thought that the Widowmaker minis were some of the coolest out there, and you've done them complete justice with your unique, and yet completely in-character, colour scheme. Loving this painting log!

08-07-2011, 21:39
Thanks for the threadarection guys. Been working on High Paladin Vilimon for a week, so should be done soon.

@Mercutius: Privateer Press is better than GamesWorkshop. The truth hurts, I know, but its time to switch sides. I'll tell my friend you liked the Khador scheme.

@Skratchington: Thanks for the great comment. Do you have a Plog for your Skorne? Ill check and see, if not, get cracking, we need to take over the fantasy section with PP logs.

24-07-2011, 01:35
High Paladin Vilmon:

24-07-2011, 23:56
Won a painting comp at a tourni. Highlander tournament, one warcaster and jack per person and everyone plays at the same time.

Abraham Danglebreech
25-07-2011, 00:00
Nice one man. Well deserved I reckon

Karak Norn Clansman
25-07-2011, 00:05
With such painting the prize can't have come as a surprise. ;)

25-07-2011, 02:10
Thanks guys!

25-07-2011, 07:01
awsome well done mate

28-07-2011, 09:13
congrats and well deserved! :)

30-07-2011, 17:56
thanks basher and lorelorn!

30-07-2011, 18:22
yeh looks better without all that green mist stuff sorry but i'm stealing your idea if i ever get round to put mine together

nice to see you back on the cryx

30-07-2011, 18:35
Thanks basher, yeah it looked like too much stuff, especially for a 2 point model. Wasn't hard to do, just a coping saw and some snippers, and then filed down any sharp points.

05-08-2011, 17:13
Wonderful work on these. Nice gritty paint job on the Cryx and the Menoth are looking ace too.

My name is Daniel and I am a wargamer

14-08-2011, 21:34
Thanks Daniel!

14-08-2011, 21:44
love the swirls dude

27-08-2011, 17:03
Thanks bash, its a pretty simple thing but it works well to tie all the Protectorate models together, and its unique as far as I know.

Well I haven't finished painting anything, I'm almost done with a unit of Exemplar Swordsmen and I've been working on a game table. I got Darraghe Wrathe with store credit from trading in my magic cards. I glued him together with opposite arms than what they are on the box, and I think it looks much cooler.

28-08-2011, 17:59
loving your log, making me wish i was at home so i could paint up my khador :( increadibly jelouse of your OSL skills

28-08-2011, 22:07
yeh looking good man cant wait to see what you do with darraghe i got mine cheep with 2 units of soulhunters of a mate with a outstanding paint job so didn't want to ruin it

22-09-2011, 19:07
I do like the switch posing on Darragh. Might have to suggest that to the missus if she ever gets him.

25-09-2011, 19:53
kormas: Practice makes perfect.
basher: I really want to paint him. He'll probably be next in the line
Keravin: I think you should. It looks a lot better to me.

Ok guys, here are some Protectorate Exemplars:

http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/8928/swordknights.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/820/swordknights.jpg/)

26-09-2011, 20:21
Daraghe Wrath on foot is done. Had a lot of fun with this guy. My Cryx are definitely easier to paint than the Protectorate, more instant satisfaction.

26-09-2011, 21:45
i remember getting some errants and opening the box nearly cried when i saw all the parts. As for paiting menoth to much filligree for my likeing shame really i like the way they play.

darraghe look's ace though maybee a bit shiney on the base cant wait to see what you do with the mount

26-09-2011, 21:53
Oh the shelac hadn't dried on the base yet. Yeah it was torturous getting those guys all painted in one fell swoop. Last time I chain paint five guys with that much detail. (One of them was the test model.)

28-09-2011, 05:35
I said it in another thread but hopping on here to say again the cryx are looking terrific. I like seeing your take on the other factions as well.

28-09-2011, 18:15
A lot of great work here! Like everyone else I really like the OSL on your Cryx.

28-09-2011, 20:59
spooktalker: Thanks again!

Hushrong: I appreciate it!

Okay, here is the Reckoner:

And I bought some stuff that looks like horsehair, for making long grass, and stuck it on a few of my Cryx models:

28-09-2011, 22:13
love the spirals on the carapace and the dials on the engine

29-09-2011, 14:00
Thanks bash!

29-09-2011, 17:46
Wow, Darragh Wrath turned out awesome! Very nice paint jobs on the menoth stuff as well. Still not a huge fan of the models themselves, but your painting helps them out immensely.

29-09-2011, 18:20
Thanks pointyteeth!

29-09-2011, 19:05
The Reckoner with the swirl design looks great. It is definitely a nice way to add a lot to such large open areas.

30-09-2011, 02:08
Thanks Hushrong, I thought so.

Ok, Hierophant:

bert n ernie
30-09-2011, 07:45
Hi Mike,
I really like the approach you've taken with the jacks, especially the Khador. They really look like they've been built out of cement in the middle of winter.

30-09-2011, 08:54
I'm not a huge fan of the PP range in general, but I have to admit that you've made the Cryx guys look very very nice - I like the limited palette and OSL finish. Looking forward to seeing more and having my opinion swayed even more.

30-09-2011, 13:33
bert n ernie: I appreciate the compliment man. I do enjoy painting the Khador, but most people seem to like Cryx the best.

JackDaw: You might not like the models, but the game is way better than Warhammer, imo, and once you get into it the models take on a new life.

02-10-2011, 13:30
I do like the robes of the Hierophant.

Duke Donald
02-10-2011, 14:30
Beautiful painting! Crisp with nice lighting. It doesn't hurt that the Privateer Press minis are really nice sculpts.

06-10-2011, 17:33
Keravin: thank you sir
Duke: Get into painting them. The game is really fun and its very rewarding to paint them.

Here is the Paladin of the Order of the Wall, next to High Paladin Vilmon. He came out a little shiny from my matte sealer, I don't know if its because the sealer needs to dry or if the sealer is messing up with age:

09-10-2011, 00:10
Painted my banethrall unit for a painting competition and won!

09-10-2011, 00:45
Congrats! These certainly look like they deserve a prize. :)

09-10-2011, 14:13
Thank you sir! Here is my first Hordes mini, Madrak Ironhide the Trollblood warcaster. I finally got the water effect on the base to work, I used two part clear epoxy glue:

09-10-2011, 16:40
congratts on the win and madrak looks ace

11-10-2011, 16:59
Liking the skin tones on Madrak. The new model is much nicer to work with than the battlebox one.

11-10-2011, 20:15
Thanks basher. Yeah Keravin, I like him a lot more, so much so I wouldn't get the battlebox. Skin tone worked out well, yeah. I just watered down the same pink I painted his scale things with and did a light wash. I'm going to start doing light washes of blue/red tones on skins alot in the future, I think.

16-10-2011, 13:59
Ok 2 models today. First the next troll, an impaler, and a shot of him with Madrak:

Then a machine wraith:

08-12-2011, 20:55
Ok. Got one painted. Here is the Harbinger of Menoth. Kind of a floating prophet with godlike powers. She's in the Menoth faction, which is a group of zealous religious types. (thought I'd give some background since not too many of you guys are into Warmachine)

I removed some guys who were holding her down with chains then sculpted on some fire and painted it after looking at the fire on one of basher's demons.

08-12-2011, 22:08
very nice i think i prefer her without the chain bearers kind off looks more imposing.Love the swirl effect on the banner aswell

08-12-2011, 22:26
Thanks bash. Yeah, I can see the appeal in the chain bearers. I just thought it took away from her because it made her look like she didn't have the power to keep herself from floating away.

14-12-2011, 21:13
I think this is a Crusader. Same army has the Harbinger, Protectorate of Menoth. His mace catches people on fire on critical hits.

14-12-2011, 22:17
I like your painting style. Very characterful and Blanche-esque

15-12-2011, 07:57
Thanks hobodog. I'm getting a little more abstract in my style as I get older, kind of inspired by Morghlum Necksnapper's Orc and Goblin log.

25-02-2012, 16:47
Wardog. Couldn't get too good of a pic, but I'm hungover so:

27-02-2012, 09:48
I've been away from Warseer for a while, but it's great to see your PP thread still going Mike! Love the painted Bane Thralls, that was a very well deserved win! Also liking the Menoth models, especially the Harbinger. Mine is also sans chain bearers (though I picked up a second hand pre-painted Menoth force a couple of weeks ago, sot hat hardly counts!)

10-03-2012, 20:32
Very nice comment, lorelorn. I appreciate that you're still checking in on my stuff. I've been pretty swamped with school lately, but I'm planning on knocking out some more stuff soon. Maybe I should set a goal for like a model a week or something... Hmmm...

Solun Decius
12-03-2012, 23:33
Very nice WarmaHordes stuff here Mike.
Regarding goals, what's worked best for me is sitting down to paint often even if I only have 15 minutes or something. "A model a week" I can postpone until I've just got one day left and then it's impossible. A goal like "sit down and paint a little every day" (or 5-6 days out of 7 in a week) even if it's only 15 minutes, that goal actually gets me further along (when I actually sit down I often paint for more than 15 minutes anyway).
Hope to see more stuff on the log, so keep up the good work!

14-03-2012, 23:37
Thanks Solun, I got inspired enough by your post to knock out a Vassal of Menoth. 15 minutes a day does sound good. I usually paint for like 3 hours at a time, which is probably why I don't paint too often. Well here is the Vassal, who is a wizard who, because Menoth doesn't like magic, is chained up, they usually volunteer to be chained as they want to atone for their sinful magicalyness:

18-05-2012, 18:08
Painted the Trollkin Hero. I'm not too happy with how my stuff has been turning out lately. I think I'm getting lazy.

update: Stared at this model until I began to like it.

18-05-2012, 18:14
been a while.love the tartan mate well done

28-05-2012, 20:17
Thanks basher. Heres another Cryx model. Deneghra:

28-05-2012, 21:11
Love the trollblood hero, always liked that model.

29-05-2012, 23:49
Thanks Maxxev. Ok finished another Pistol Wraith. I'm getting a little more happy with my painting doing these Cryx guys:

30-05-2012, 08:06
I like that one as well... I think I have a random pistol wraith torso around somewhere.... I'll have to see if I can use it in my project (minus pistol of course). That hat conversion is groovey :).

30-05-2012, 10:51
great stuff, I really love the pistol Wraith :)

31-05-2012, 15:08
The hat is a nice touch. Where did you get it from?

Grain Weevil
31-05-2012, 16:23
Wow, that Pistol Wraith is great :)

31-05-2012, 20:00
Thanks Maxxev, logan, and Grain Weevil. Keravin, I sculpted the hat out of greenstuff.

31-05-2012, 20:17
Whoops, double post.

31-05-2012, 20:34
i was just going to ask about the hat so in that case good sculpting

03-06-2012, 02:34
Painted the Trollkin Hero. I'm not too happy with how my stuff has been turning out lately. I think I'm getting lazy.

You know, my first thought on looking at the image was 'best painted trollkin model I've ever seen'. I think the Trollkin are the weakest miniatures PP does, quality wise, so I'm always happy to see someone make them look interesting, as you have done here.

On the pistol wraith, great work, I would not have picked the hat as not being part of the model, great work again.

04-06-2012, 22:45
Thanks basher. Great comment lorelorn, I really appreciate it. Maybe the trollkin hero will come around for me. Well here is a new model. Darraghe Wrathe on his mount to go with his on foot version I painted a while back:

04-06-2012, 23:15
I think you can see the progression in painting between the two. Definitely prefer the mounted version.

05-06-2012, 10:46
Thanks Keravin, nice of you to say.

09-06-2012, 21:02
Group Shot:

09-06-2012, 21:48
I love the green and yellow emerging from the thumbnails. That light contrasts perfectly with the muted colors you used to paint the rest of the figures.

13-06-2012, 21:40
Thanks nando_cadiz, glad you like em.

31-01-2013, 21:37
Fantastic plog here. The glow effects on the Cryx models is amazing! I'm going to do a more solid red, blocky red state style for my own Khador, but the winter theme you did here was very nice. Hope you're still plugging away at this.
