Think of this as a game - Pick any 40k list you want.

You must have one HQ and one troops, and you have five hundred points to spend.

Write the most unbeatable monster you can!

I don't really see much reason in playing 500pts games without the combat patrol/40k in 40minutes rules.

Seconded. Low points without further limits are far too easy to abuse.

For instance, Nob bikers meet the HQ and troops requirement.

My local store uses most of the old combat patrol rules for their 500pt events, and substitutes IG platoon commanders for CCS's since you can't have 3W models.

My list for such events is as follows:

PCS: 3x GL, Chimera w/Stubber, ML & HF

IS w/Autocannon & GL, Chimera w/ Stubber, ML & HB

IS w/Autocannon & GL, Chimera w/ Stubber, ML & HB

IS w/Autocannon & GL, Chimera w/ Stubber, ML & HB

35 infantry, 4 AV12 vehicles, 15 heavy weapons (14 with 36-48" range), 6 special weapons :D

For Nids....

Tervigon with regeneration
Tyranid Prime - scything talons, 2 bone swords, regeneration.
4 Tyranid Warriors - 2 sets of scything talons.
The Doom of Malan'tai

It may not look like much, but every model has at least 3 wounds and a 4+ save. The Prime really helps boost the Warriors and the Tervigon should keep spawning for a couple of turns while regeneration also helps keep it alive. The Doom is also a nice little ranged unit that can inflict alot of harm and also attract enemy fire while your opponent tries to bring it down before it gets to close and starts killing everything within 6" and gaining more and more wounds (plus its 24" attack isn't to shabby either being AP1, heheh).

Just look one post above you and you will see an army that shredders yours.

Tyranid prime

2 Hive guard
2 Hive guard
2 Hive guard

24x Termiguants

Could be amusing in some instances.

but yea.. 500 pt games *can* be worthless without combat patrol rules, except if your IG. They are a bit unbalanced in low points.

@SPYDER68

Who is keeping the synapse? You will either only be able to control two Hyve Guard units or all of the Teragants.

Its not hard in 500pts in a 4x4 table to stay halfway within 12" of the Tyranid Prime.

Max Jet

Yes that might be true, otherwise 12 inches are not really much and you are prohibiting yourself from any kind of maneuver with your units, They are somehow bunched up within a 24 inch circle and only move as a giant block. Even at 500 points you might suffer greatly by enemy fire.
I would change the two hyve guards for 3 warriors, but that is just my opinion.

Every nid army suffers from enemy fire at low points.

What do you mean, unbalanced? You can field a fully Normal FOC legal, Mech-Vets list, and remain within the combat patrol limits. How could that possibly be unbalanced;)

It's not as if a couple of chimeras are that tough...

Yep, 4 chimeras with heavy weapons shooting out the top is real easy to kill.

pretty much the only armor 12 tank that i can of that is usable in combat patrol.

What can Necrons come up with at 500 points? :)

All lists would look like

Lord
10 Warriors
10 Warriors

:D

500 points is a good starting point for new players. I played a game last night against a friend just starting out in the hobby. 500 points offered us a HQ, 2 Troops, and some points left for another unit. (I had HS, he had a FA)
It was a very fun game, and the night ended with the new player planning his next unit.

My advice... Not every game has be a large game. You will have just as much fun with 500 - 800 points as you will with 1500-2000 points.

at these points, a chimera IG list is the sure fire way to win. But if you want to be really lame...

Deathwing Captain
5 Terminators
5 Terminators

probably would get destroyed, but youd at least scare the living crap out of your opponents.

Something like this would probably do well.

Dark Eldar

Archon (/w shadow field + aggonizor + combat drugs) + 9 Warrior + Raider

5 Jet bikes

10 Warriors
10 Warriors

I am not sure if this is within the 500 point limit, but it is close.

Here is what I used:

Dark Eldar

HQ: Dracon (w/power weapon, splinter pistol, shadowfield, and combat drugs)

Troops: Raider squad with 9 warriors (8 splinter rifles, 1 splinter cannon)
Raider squad with 10 warriors (9 splinter rifles, 1 splinter cannon)

Heavy Support: 1 Ravager (1 Dark Lance, 2 Disintegrators)

My Dracon joined the Raider squad of 9 warriors.

Was a very effective list, though for next time I would make some changes.

Don't you find all those dark lances a waste of points at this level?

Honestly, I almost never find a Dark Lance a waste of points. I am usually fighting some flavor of Space Marine or Necrons, so I find them very useful.

I this most recent battle against the Tau. I used them to snipe his Devilfish Transport, a Pirrahna (sp?), and the Tau Commander (I have no idea what its called)

From the chaos daemons army:

Keeper of secrets [200]

5 Bloodcrushers [200]

5 Plaguebearers w/icon [100]

Put the bloodcrushers and the keeper in the same wave, and hope you get that one first. If you don't, hold out with the plaguebearers until you do.

That'd eat your list.

As would many others. T6 isn't the nicest thing to face in combat patrol, but it's not the hardest.
