Hello everybody!

Long time without posting at the forums.
My life was a little bit upside down in the last year (arrghhh bloody 2009  !), but luckily, I was able to do some works.

Iīm gonna use this Plog to show you what Iīm working on (WIP & PIP, sketches, etc.), some finished pieces, and another crazyness.
Mostly 40K commisions, but will be some other models of WHF in the future (and some personal projects too :) ).

So letīs beginnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn !

Hereīs some power armour version of Commander Culln that I made the last year.

The client requested that the model can switch between a on foot version to a Jump-pack option (for gaming purposes).
I work with magnets to make this option possible.
I choose to represent this character with a antique armour with big fist (to represent the old craftwork of the earlies designs of the AM).

Enough talk for now so move into the real stuff... PICS.

Hi there!
Thanks for the comments.

Will you be painting him or will the client? Can't wait to see more.

This model will be painted by the client.
I wil try to update the painted version once I get some pics of that.

Whats that yellowish putty your using? Cant be fimo surely..

In fact is some epoxy putty called Parsec (some local label), wich is pretty close to Milliput brown as far I know.

Hereīs a couple of images of other details of this project that I forget to show earlier.

The sketches of the general view, some icons (one for the Medusa campaign, and another for the Anphelion campaign), and the Jump-Pack.

Hahaha, thanks Gonfrask!

Yeap, you already see this model the last year, but here at Warseer forums those pics are fresh news ;) .

Thanks for your words IncrediSteve, I will try to do the best.

Well, hereīs another project that I made the last year.

At this case my client requested to make a new version of his commander.
He send me a pic of the previous model that he made, and taking that model as starting point I began with the sketch.

The original model made by Madclaw:

My sketch for the new version:

And the model ended looking like this:

A WIP pic to show better the face:

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/SWdetailfacefinished.jpg

I change a little bit the pose to make him look more in a "roaring" attitude, also i make him bald ( IMHO suits better on a 400 old space viking character).

And finally a pic of the model in pieces (for better painting purposes I make the model in pieces).

Gentlemans!

I make some time to do a few steps of the furry capeīs tutorial.

Tools and materials

Cutter
Green Stuff
A "pointy sharp" sculpting tool
Vaseline
A piece of plastic bag
Sand paper
A plastic tube
Superglue
Plastic welding( optional)

First of all I want to say: this kind of cape is based on the Joaquin Palacios method, with minor modifications. All the credit to him and his magic hands.

This cape is made to represent a very furry cloath of long hair. More similar to the kind of fur that will have a polar bear, some kind of americanīs wolf ; or even a Yeti.

Itīs a process very time consuming, but the final result depends on leave the piece dry between the steps.

1#
You have to mix a small ball of GS (about 20 mm of diameter).
Add Vaseline to the ball until gets soft and the ball donīt stick into your fingers.
Put the ball between two pieces of plastic bag and roll over with the plastic tube (you can use a pen instead the pink tube that I have, but I donīt guarantee success :p) until you get a very thin flat piece.

Let it dry about 20 minutes.

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/tutorials/tutocapa2bis.jpg
http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/tutorials/tutocapa2.jpg

2#
Give the desired shape with a cutter, and place the cape over the miniture.
At this moment you have to model the folds and wrinkles (not to much is needed, remember, the idea is to simulate a LEATHER cape).
Let it dry completely.

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/tutorials/tutocapa3.jpg

Sometimes you need to put some pieces of plastic under the cape, to keep the desire shape until the GS dries.

3#
Once that the putty dries completely, make some cut on the internal face of the cape. It will suggest the different patches of leather, then use sandpaper at the same surface (it will give a more realistic texture).

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/tutorials/tutocapa4.jpg

I make the stitches with the plastic welding, but it can be done with GS without problem (only takes more time).

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/tutorials/tutocapa6.jpg

...

FreakForge
29-01-2010, 19:40
...

4#
Once that the stitches are completely dry, we can work on the reverse of the cape.
FURRY TIME!

Make a few sausages of GS. Cut those in tinny pieces, roll them in one of the edges to make some spikes of putty.

Apply some drops of superglue on the down edge of the cape.
Start to add the spikes as is show on the pic.

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/tutorials/tutocapa8.jpg

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/tutorials/tutocapa9.jpg

5#
Once that you cover all the down edge of the cape you must start to "comb your hair" with the help of the sculpting tool.

Lock by lock.

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/tutorials/tutocapa10.jpg

Make sure to comb the little locks in both sides!

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/tutorials/tutocapa11.jpg

Let it dry completely ( 2 hours minimum).

6#
Repeat step 5# (but try to cover only 1/3 of the previous locks).

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/tutorials/tutocapa12.jpg

7#
Repeat step 5# (but try to cover only 1/3 of the previous locks).

And so until you cover all the cape with hair.

I hope to be useful, and see a lot of furry models at the forums.

thanks for the tutorial...
Iīve made myself something similar (following also J. Palacios guidelines) but my "base" was a cloak made of GS and another putty (similar to milliput) this mix once it dries itīs more rigid than the pure GS one. IMO itīs easier the late work with GS over this base because it has a less plastic texture

Hi everybody!

Long time has pass since the last update. The reason was that I want to update with the final pics of one of the 3 primarchs that Iīve been doing , but unfortenetly those models are taking ages to be done ( Maybe Iīm a little bit obsesive with the details, maybe :D ).

Anyway, I donīt want to buried this thread, so hereīs an update of another commission: an Eldar farseer riding a bike.

The main idea that came to my mind was a vehicle able to travel through the web, a bike made of wraithbone.
The farseer gonna be based in a very old design made by Jes Goodwin (beatiful design by the way).

A couple of WIP pics:

@ blkbuster... crappy guide of the Jump-pack on the next post...

FreakForge
07-05-2010, 18:45
@ blkbuster: Well the jump-pack was made starting from a regular plastic marine backpack. I made two cilinders with brown putty and attach them to the sides (previously, I cut the exaust from the marinesīs backpack).

Then I biggerize the upper part (also using BS). The previos steps can easily made with plastic rod, but Iīm more a "putty worker" XD !!!

I start adding wires, and pipes amde from GS, BS.

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/RSbodyWIPXXVIII.jpg

I search some little air intakes like a crazy for a month (I search planes model kits, and toys), but I realise that the scale was not right so I have to sculpt my own engines.
I made a GS mold to avoid sculpt the piece twice.

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/RSbodyWIPXXVI.jpg

I drill the end of the cilynders to make the exaust and add some flaps made of BS.

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/RSbodyWIPXXVII.jpg

Then the final touchs, a couple of armour plates made of BS for the sides, the main armour at the middle of the engine (also the perfect way to hide the end of the wires). and the protection of the air intakes made of GS.

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/RSbodyWIPXXIX.jpg

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/RSbodyWIPXXXI.jpg

The last part was to include the fine details (rivets, the Aquilla, and some purity seals).

I hope that you find this useful, I have no more pics of the WIP Jump-pack, and I suck making step-by-step guides ... sorry.

Until soon!

@Azoth: Gracias tio!
The process was quite similar to the following tutorial made by the Brushthrallsīteam :

http://blog.brushthralls.com/?page_id=3875

The main difference is just glue some cogs to the inner piece of plasticard, instead the water effects process.
I have a lot of plastic cogs (the cheap clocks from Chinese shops ussualy have a plenty of them).
The remaining surface of the plastic base was ornated with BS (the Retribution rune, and the rusted texture as the WIP pic shows).

Any doubt send me a PM (y te lo digo en Castellano que es mas comodo para ambos :D ).

In other terms Iīm still working on the primarchs. Iīm very close to finish 2 of them (hopefully this month)

In other way, Iīm very proud to announce that Maxmini (http://www.maxmini.eu/) is gonna include a set of bionic bits that I made, to his existing accesories range.

Hereīs a couple of pics of the greens, and first test cast.

Those bionics look great, very nicely sculpted. My only issue is with the almost "sitting position" the legs are in. I think they would have been better a little straighter, or maybe multipart so they could be assembled in the most suitable pose for the model they get used on.

Well done on getting your stuff commercially cast. Hope we see plenty more from you for sale in the future.

@FreakForge: it was a pleasure to work with you :) . Look forward to working with you in the future - we have more stuff planned, some of which should fit your sculpting style nicely :) . Just need to sort out new workshop and I'll contact you :) .

BTW - just not to cause confusion. The bionic bits won't be realeased within 2 days like Taz mentioned. I wasn't clear when I had a chat with him - I meant that I'll post previews in a day or two (which I did :) ). This set will be on sale next week.

Hi there!

Thanks to all for the replies. Iīm really happy with the end results, and like Przemas (a great guy to work with) said, thereīs some more stuff planned in the future.

@Sheep: Thanks man! the bionics work very well with the power armoured models. So you can get some for your AdMech forces ;) .

@Catferret: Thanks! I take note of your advice about the multipart, but itīs very complicated to get something that work well in such scale (the pieces will need a lot of sculpting to be assembled ).
Anyway the legs seems very flexed without the rest of the body. I will try to post a pic with the legs in a model.

In other terms hereīs an update at Dantenator, and some pics of a wolf priestīs bike.

The bike will have a lot of ornates on it. I will try to give a more nordic style to this, because I feel that the original concept of Norse space marines are quite vanished for the actual models (except for some tinny details like the runes).

The Dantenator is great! But I'm not really sold on the abs-buckle. The buckle is too low for it to cover his abs, so it doesn't really make sense to me. But it's some great sculpting, and that's what counts in the end ;).

I will work on the abs-buckle. Definetly need to be redone.

Well, after a long time of work the first Primarch over my desk flew away...

And in this particular case the sentence have double meaning because the Primarch is the non offical pictured Corax, primarch of the glorious XIX legion, the Raven Guard.

This commission was particulary difficult to me because I have to design the model with only a few and very vague descriptions of the Primarch. The project began like a year ago, and by that time thereīs no other information that some poor lines of background.

The audiobook "Ravenīs flight " came at the 3/4 of the project, and not help to much about the design terms, only defined that Corax have a jetpack that allows him to fly, and not only jump.

After various failed concept designs, and a lot of discuss with my client, I came to the conclution that Corax have a lot of potencial to be a native american background based character ....

YOU SAY WHAT?

Yeap, think about it:

* Corax live in a tribe that call him Corax ( the scientific name of the raven).
* Theres an american tribe called Apsáalooke most know as "Crow people".
* Corax and his tribe are slaves in a huge industrial complex ( that reminds me what happen with the original american people under the European colonization).
*The warfare tactics are one of the most common war tactics used by the native american.
*The crow is ussually presented as "totem" in the RG fluff.
*The hulk RG monters that Corax made (after the heresy) remind me the legend of the Wendigo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendigo).
*And finally the well know Coraxīs final phrase is a quote from the poem "the Raven" By Edgar Allan Poe... an American writer.

Maybe sounds too strange something like this, mainly because most of the 40K background is based on European and Asian myths and cultures (with a few exceptions), but believe me, I think a lot about this and have a lot of discuss with my client.

Iīm really proud in how the model turns out, and to the date Corax is the best model that I made.

The model measures about 50mm high.

So, after this long introduction I leave you pics of Corax, Primarch of the Raven Guard... VICTORVS AVT MORTIS!

Hi guys!
Long time without news. I was without PC for a while so the updates come with a delay.

@cpt.skara: Rogal itīs fine, healthy, and send you regards .

@Ancientsociety: Thanks dude!
About the eldar jet, I work with a epoxy putty called Parsec (itīs a local brand). Hard rock when it dries, easy sandable, etc.
If you read the thread I talk about that several times.

I will try to do a photo-tutorial, but I canīt promise anything. Itīs a quite exausting process at this moment.
But basically speaking you need to make a basic bone structure (I made mine with a thin sheet of plasticard, and wire), then cover it with BS, let it dry, sand, repeat the process a few times until you get the organic shape of your taste.

@Gekiganger: Thanks!
No problem at all with the .JPG, in fact is very handy ... Thanks bro!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Iīm very close to finish the next Primarch.
As you may presume it will be Rogal Dorn, and goes to cpt.skara home (or goes to Palace of Terra, Im not sure).

The model only needs a few minor details so I presume that we will have some update on weekend.

Until that I have a pic of Dante in pieces to share:

After a long time of work another primarch itīs done...

I take as starting reference the work on this character made by J.Blanche at the Horus Heresy artwork, and Mr. Eastwood in the "duel" scene at Gran Torino.
A quick discussion with cpt.skara and this sketch make a solid base to me to began with the model:

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu172/sideprojects_2009/RogalDornsketchII.jpg

The model that I want to make shows a tower man shaped, a colossus that have the face aged by the war. The mix of human with machine in order to create the perfect paladin of the Imperium.
So no pretty boy face to me.

The model stands 55mm to the top of the head, made 98% from zero with GS, BS, a mix of both putties, plasticard and a few GW bits.

Without further ado, here is my vision of Rogald Dorn, primarch of the VII Legion, the Imperial Fist:

Wow great sculpt.. loving all the little details you have put into it to make him come alive..

Only comments I would also make are again the head looks a bit small, but so do the feet.. the pointed shoes seem to be out of place with the rest of the sculpt.. but other than that great job..

Don't suppose you could put it up next to a regular SM to show the difference that a primarch is compared to a lowly marine?

As I say I want to give him a war veteran look, thatīs why he looks gaunt, edentulous, or to aged. when the model get painted I believe that the effect will be complete.
I visualice the primarchs as fantastic characters and change proportions in order to make some details more relevant than others (like the huge fist or the small feet or head).

I donīt fell the "helenic proportions" accurate to the model.

My vision of the primarchs is far away from human, because they are not humans... they are something else.

Hi there!

Thanks for the replies.

Like I said before I really like Thomasī paintjob on Corax, it really brings life to the model.

About the oil paint, I found them very helpful to give weathering effects on large vehicles.
Is a technique very common on the military models.
The translucent effect is unique, nothing compared with what can be done with acrylics.

But I recommend it only to make effects, not to use oil for a whole model (the oil take ages to dry).
I knew painters that use oil with regular miniatures, but iīm too far away from that.

I follow this excellent tutorial made by Ultrawerke (the oil dot part only):

http://ultrawerke.blogspot.com/2007/03/painting-and-weathering-tutorial-part-i.html

Take a read of the whole blog, is a source of techniques and weathering effects without limits.

Once again a very dynamic and very detailed sculpt/conversion. I'm realy impressed by the dynamic part though, wich seems present in all you models lately. And what is it with you and bird's skeletons? I spot another one on the bike, which i don't realy asociate with Space Wolves.

Hi there!

Iīm having some personal problems lately, so excuse me if the updates doesn`t come very often.

@spekkiebig: Thanks a lot. yes lately Iīm trying to include more dynamism on the models.
Hehehehe, I donīt have any problems with bird skulls ( I guess), just is a reference to the Vinkingīs Raven banner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raven_banner), a detail that come in the discussion with my client.
The idea was to make an character with a lot of heraldry, and the Raven Banner fits nicely with all the idea of the priest.

By the way, good eye for the details!

@Anodai, Commander Zane, Space Monkey, usticar Alaric:
Thanks for the comments guys!.
The list of incoming Primarchs is the following:

First, the first... Ten will be the second, and last but not least... two less than the total of the Primarchs account

And yes, I love the silly riddles :D .

@Gonfrask: REALLY... And who will be paint him ?

@Warflag:Hahahaha, thanks! I take advantage of that the model goes glued to the bike, so, i donīt have to pay to much attention to the anatomy.

And now a few pics of the works over my desk.

The Stormlord have more weathering on it and some decals.

Hello everyboy!

Itīs a have been a while since the last update, the year changes, someones passed away, and other just birth.

Everything still messy around here, but I always try to make another step foward. Thanks to all my friends and clients for their support and understanding.

So, another primarch get done.

At this time Lion El Jonson, Primarch of the Dark Angels.

A model that took a lot of time to get done. I mix a lot of things to do this model. First I always found interesting the feral childhood of Lion, and feel that partticular aspect need to be around the miniature... Thatīs why he have the torn cape and tunic.

The general line sof the armor was inspired on the gothic cathedral around Europe (the generator was made trying to emulate the towers at the Sagrada Familia cathedral).

The skull of the Calibanīs beast as relic-trophy, sided by candles.

And the servitor as altar boys, carriers of the other sacred personal objects of the Lion gives a lordly sense to all group.

I have some troubles with the scale but the model turns out pretty well.

So, some pics of Lion, primarch of the first legion:

Repent! For tomorrow you die!

Another great interpetation of a Primarch. Once again the detail on this one is amazing. The backpack somehow made me think of Dali. The servitors and spiraling base add much flavor to the model as well. Can't wait to see what more you've got in store for us.

And finally... the mighty, the beloved Iron-Pope:

Ferrus Manus

The model was planned to get ready around end of February. But, unfortunately Brother Varen (my client9 lost his job, and have to cancel the commission.
I was planned to finish it at some point (he needs a lot of work on final details (such candles, purity seals, cog seals, AdMech icons) a cape made of metal plaques (like the skirt and shoulder of thismodel), and a bunch of servo-skulls flying all around.

The model stands around 12 cm from the bottom of the base to the top of the candles.
The idea was that Ferrus made his own armour previous the emperor arrival to Medusa. then he join the cruzade and add all Imperial symbols.

Also I want to suggest that the techmarine armour style born in Ferrus mind.

Hereīs the concept sketch and a couple of pics of his current state.
